NHL, NHLPA Agree to Mediation

While Bill Daly suggested earlier today that he expects the league and the players to resume negotiations at some point this week, there are currently no formal talks scheduled.

As reported first by Pierre LeBrun, both the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to allow a Federal mediator to oversee CBA negotiations.  Where things go from here is still obviously unpredictable but it can’t hurt to have a mediator involved at this stage in the process.

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the group involved in the mediation process includes Scott Beckenbaugh, John Sweeney, and Guy Serota all from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

The two sides obviously aren't speaking the same language right now which is why mediation makes sense.  The mediation is not binding but should help provide a fresh perspective on some of the key issues separating the two sides.

It's November 26th and I'm blogging about Federal Mediators. Ridiculous.

The official announcement on mediation can be seen here.

  • As the NHL tries to salvage the season, Ottawa Senator forward Milan Michalek is keeping himself busy over in the Czech Republic.  Michalek, proudly wearing the #69 on his back, was involved in a heated exchange that included a goalie shove and a brief line brawl.  You can check out the video over on Puck Daddy.

Truly believe that the neutral Federal Mediators, will be very well respected by both the NHL and NHLPA, and instill a calm and progressive tone, to resolving the few issues, which seem to be stalling the negotiations, at every attempt to get back on track !

Hope this happens this week, as we are gradually wiping out almost half the season, near the end of December !!

Good Luck to the 3 Mediators !!

I had jokingly suggested the government mandate mediation a few months ago not realizing it was a potential outcome.

I'm not sure the NHLPA is going to like the direction mediators take this conversation because starting your argument with "under the last agreement" is not going to hold water.

how much of those conversations will be made public?

Mediation will only work if both sides are prepared to give in a little. That won't happen.

Think about it.. these players dreamed in their young lives of playing in the NHL one day. They made it.. now they are hell bent, along with Fehr & Bettman, to destroy that same league.

It's almost embarassing right now to be an NHL fan. To lose a 2nd season in 8 yrs over a labour dispute.

I hope this works for the good of the game and the future of the game.. but I still don't hold much hope for a season.

According to this Washington based Government Mediation organization, these negotiators will not reveal too much, on the negotiating by their 3 mediators.

Let's hope they get it done with some expediency and fairness to both parties !

Checkout Matt puempel's Hat trick game highlights against the otters on the Ranger's website.

http://www.kitchenerrangers.com/

His first goal was probably the nicest wrist shot goal I'v seen from him this year so far, it was so fast and accurate there was no way even an nhl goalie could have stopped it at the position the otter's goalie was in.

His second goal showed off his extremely quick hands, in the slot.

His third goal was just ugly lol.

According to a Mr.Cohen of the Federal Mediators, Mr.Guy Serota, has been removed from the mediation team, due to some hacker on his Twitter account. Good move in playing it safe !

yeah that is quite the hack..just like puck daddy pointed out..one that lasted weeks and it was tied to his youtube account...that has to be the new cop out when someone posts something that is either downright repulsive or wrong, it wasn't me..my account must have been hacked...what's next..no honey..it wasn't me with that other woman..my body was hacked..I know a bit extreme, but just as ludicrous.

who cares what his twitter says? does this really make him less qualified to do his job? there's weirdos all over the place. If we started removing or firing every single one of them the world would fall apart

personally, I'm ashamed for the people who feel they need to dig up dirt on every single person who enters public spotlight

ya, I get it, its the media's job. but honestly, I thought USA was the land of free speech or some sh!t like that. seems a bit hypocritical

If the guy would have helped get hockey under way quicker, he can tweet whatever he wants IMO

sticks and stones

well as much as I agree with free speech..anti-se mite and racist comments I am sure most people will agree or should agree should never be posted anywhere..twitt er is not exactly private..anyone and everyone can see it, so yeah, if he was stunned enough to post comments like that, then of course attention should be brought to it..I am by no means political by any means, but definitely have a strong stance against prejudice/racis m.

although it might APPEAR racist, you should probably either take a second look, or learn how twitter works. its pretty clear to see his comment was addressing somebody elses comment. he goes on to call THAT person racist

the guy just didn't re-tweet properly and its getting blown out of proportion by people who don't understand twitter

I had to take a look at the Goal scorers in the O, it's been awhile. 21 Goals in 25 games is killer for Puempel who sits in 2nd place in that dept!! Boone Jenner is in 1st with 24 in 27 games, leaving Brett Ritchie in 3rd place with 21 in 27. Scheifele is close with 20 in 25 games. It's a pretty close race really, much closer than many expected.

I hate to say it, but I have seen this coming for some time.
Unless there is a quick attitude change on the players side, this season will be lost, and if they blindly lead the Hockey ignorant Fehr, they will all be going over the cliff together and risk next year as well.

This is NHL hockey, that is primarily gate driven by he Canadian and North East states, this is not Baseball with all the TV money that will lead future revenue.

What happen in Baseball, CANNOT happen to the NHL. Fehr hurt MLB for years following the stoppage, and that is Americas pastime. NHL is Canada's pastime, but I can sense and fear that all of our patience are wearing very thin.

If people get used to the extra disposable income from not having season tickets, and start to book vacations down south and ski vacations, it will become the standard for years to come.

What will happen when the NHL/NHLPA decide they are bored, and now need the money, and fans decide, no our family now loves the extra vacations, and it is far better way to spend our disposable income. There would be nothing left for season tickets.

What happens when Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Buffao, etc, all come back to half empty arenas like it was in baseball?

That so-called rich piece of the pie will not be there any more.

Can fans come back in a tough economy? Will they rather spend the cash on more family oriented events?

Maybe in Canada, but mark my words, many US teams will be in bigtime trouble.

Right now we need a saviour to explain to all these greedy ignoramaces, that the damage has been done with two lockouts, and this great pie you have worked so hard to build, is now a cupcake, so all your salaries and revenues will be cut in half for the first couple of years.

Please cancel the season so we can all focus on real hockey in the AHL

Well, Chirp must be sleeping in these days, lol. I expected an updated story at this point... but then again, what else is there to write about?

We know the BSens are doing great, many stories about them already. So maybe Chirp should take another approach and put the focus on the World Jr's!!

It's only a month away and I'm SO excited for it. Anyone else?

and one more thing on the POOR NHL players.
If I see one more shot of Fehr, with those sad NHL faces in behind him sulking, I am going to shit.

you know why they are sulking, because they now have a view into what real life is like, staying at home doing chores changing diapers, and having to pay to go on planes and visit other cities. and not getting chartered into 5 star hotels seeing some of the best cities in North America.

Welocme to reality, and for about 10-15% of you get used to it life in the NHL for you will be no more!!

Done my rant for today,

Go B-Sens Go!!!
and way to put it to the B-Leafs

Did some brainstorming last night for some future blog ideas so keep an eye out.

I realize things have been slow around here lately, and for that I apologize. I've done my best to stay involved in the CBA stuff and the BSens stuff, but honestly, I'm frustrated.

Remember, as I've always said, I'm a fan first. And when the fan in me is frustrated, it's difficult to keep the blogger in me motivated.

Got a few ideas though so keep checking back. I really do appreciate folks keeping the discussion alive in the comment section during the downtime though!

Thanks for all the efforts chirp, but as you have stated, as fans we cannot help but feel jilted by both the players and the owners. And it is really scary when you and your diehards here are so disenchanted.

its like spending all your efforts and hard earned money courting your dream girl that you liked back when she was a loser with the freckled face, spectacles, and with braces and ignored by everyone, only to have her blossom into that beautiful girl that only you could her as, and then have her laugh at you and reject you when you ask her to the prom!

Shame on you NHL and NHLPA, we will move on, but one day you will crave our attention again, but we will all have moved on to another love!
