While a tad outspoken at times, Melnyk is exactly what you want in an owner.
He's passionate about the game of hockey and honestly cares about the on ice success of the hockey club. Even during the rebuild phase the last couple seasons, Melnyk has earned the praise of the fan base for supporting Bryan Murray and giving him to power to execute this rebuild the right way.
But the reality is, the Sens have been on an extremely tight budget the past couple seasons and the direction to tighten the purse strings comes from Eugene.
So while Melnyk was quick to deny the sale speculation, the word is he would definitely be open to the idea of a partner joining him in ownership of the Senators.
Not as drastic as the idea of Melnyk looking to sell the team outright but still something to keep an eye on moving forward.
- The BSens are finally back in action tomorrow night when they take on the Portland Pirates. The Pirates roster includes former Senators prospect David Rundblad along with with a couple other top end defensive prospects in Brandon Gormley and Oliver Ekmann-Larsson. Should be a good one.

Another disappointing day on the CBA front yesterday as the NHL officially pulled their most recent offer from the table. The expectation is that more game cancelations will come in the near future. The negotiation continues to be non-existent which is particularly disappointing when you consider how close the two sides really are. Figure it out, fellas.
I truly believe this is more of a business model that he would rather follow, than the Maple Loser, or Ranger model of throwing money at dead weight hoping that it works out,
IMHO only of course
I think it's more a "happy" confluence of the "right" way to do things and a lack of money.
I think there was a natural purse tightening because of the situation the senators were in, but Melnyk has definitely had cashflow issues and those have translated to the organisation.
If the senators were realistic stanley cup contenders we would see a small injection of cash I'm sure but not the major leap to be a spend to the cap team.
Based on comments from friends who up until the lock out worked in the organisations as accountants Melnyk is not the happy billionaire spendaholic that he is sometimes painted out to be.
If money wasn't an issue why lease the new scoreboard rather than buy it outright, for example.
all great points Apostle,
I am sure that it is nowhere near as bad as some portray, but at the same time his "go out and get that guy who dazzled around us" ie Kovalev days are gone too.
I truly believe that when all is said and done, his ownership of the Sens et al, still bring him plenty of revenue and profits,
revenue turnover yes - profits not so much
Right now, considering the Sens are still in the building stages, it isn't necessary to spend anywhere near the cap, but eventually, if ownership is serious about contending for the Stanley Cup, then they will have to be willing to big spenders.
To compete for the Cup, teams have to be able to draft well, make savvy trades at the right times, and add key free agents.
I want to see the Sens return to legitimate contenders in this league. I hope that Melnyk's goal isn't to just "survive" and hope that we can compete against the big spending teams.
Not too sure on this point either, absolutely the Senators themselves lose money, which is ideal for tax purposes but all of the other reveunue streams associated with SBP, undoubtedly make profits, again IMHO only, as I cannot prove this,
This is such bullshit.
That said he is a great guy who loves his team as well as the city. He is also Ukrainian like me and has donated millions to hospitals and the Ukrainian community in Toronto among other things.
So I still have very much respect in him and believe him when he says he won't sell the team. I think it would be his absolute last resort. He may have lost a ton of money in his divorce but that doesn't mean he's bankrupt. Until he is I doubt he sell the Sens or any of his other beloved assets.
glad to hear melnyk put out the fires quickly.
i guess the only thing that good that comes from this is there's no bad mustach contest this year.
had to resort to watching KHL games (since the AHL seems to be a weekend league right now), theres the language thing also hard to figure out what teams everyone's on.
Malkin still looks to be the elite russian player ahead of ovi and kovi, but i dont thnik thats anything new.
This was never about "moving" the team. NHL would not allow it.
If they wouldn't have signed all those contracts, them honoring the contracts that wre already in place before August came along wouldn't have been nearly as expensive.
The players are ok with 50-50 as long as its slowly brought there. If the NHL would honor the contracts, every year there would be contracts that expire and therefore would bring the percentage closer to 50-50 until enough old contracts are gone and they actually are at that even split. But the NHL insists on an imidiate 50-50 split because that means the players have to take a cut (aka the owners don't need to pay out 100% of the contracts they just signed).
The NHL tries to say they've made consessions since this process began. However that's completely untrue. The only consessions they've made we're from they're origininal mind boggling offer of 43% for the players. So they think they lo good because they've come from 43% to 50%. I mean common. The sad part is that tons of fans now think the NHL are the good guys. Meanwhile the players haven't been offered a single good thing to make them consider taking a pay cut.
If the owners maybe came to the players and said I'll give you this and this and therefore expect you to give back some salary maybe the players would play along. Instead the owners are saying you give me this, this and this and I give you nothing.
This deal will never get done until the league either decides to honor the contracts or at least offer the players a little something in return
It gave me an oppurtunity to look into some of their basic financials..... no in depth report on their profits , revenues and expenses...as obviously they're not Incorporated. However, from what I saw the team usually manages to break even near the end of season/begginin g of playoffs.( i.e ..expenses covered, but no profit). Now ,obviously this past season was very successful year from the business point of view ( and even hockey!)with about 13 mil in cap space, and selling out almost every home night.
Now I may be just a young naive student,
It wouldn't make sense for him to start looking for offers if the previous year was such a success..Im sure his financial team is making revenue projections based on this new rebuild..(consi dering losses in lockout and salary payroll increase as top end prospects eventually sign their major contracts).
also what suprised me more was just how much the team / organization values being an integral part of contributing to the city's well being. Especially in youth. there's a very large amount of money ( easily upto $4mil) that the sens payoff in charities, research and benefits.
At least from what i researched...Eu gene's the shiz!
- Immediate 50/50 split while honouring existing contracts.
- 7 year contract max, 2 year entry level deals
- Lower cap to 60M and floor to 45M, 24% reduction on all current contracts (cap hit only, players are still paid in full for their contracts)
- AHL players count towards cap, 1 week buyout period after signing CBA.
- Awesome NHL polo shirts for everyone
I noticed he's not in the lineup for Rapperswill-Jon a today
why does the NHL think they own the players rights if they are cutting salary to their liking?
think about it, all of those over blown contracts will be reduced creating cap space just to allow GMs to sign more bad deals. it makes no sense.
Owners, teams and GMs need to be held responsible for their own actions, signings and how many butts they put in the seats.
I really doubt that. Never say never. Did the Jets also not move to Atlanta?
While it's great that Eugene is intent on keeping the Sens here in Ottawa, I think it'd be wise for him to get a partner to inject more cash into the franchise. As much as we want to believe "winning" will bring in new fans, so will will marketing. And it seems to me that compared to the Canucks, Oilers, and Leafs, we are one of the less marketed teams in Canada.
Of course, it doesn't offing help that the Leafs are owned by Bell/Rogers, so already we're kind of screwed since Leafs games are broadcast through tv/satellite/mo bile/rogers/tab let/etc.
I just think it'd be great if the Sens had more exposure nationally, but it's very tough due to the situation/monop oly. It'd bring in more income, but I guess it's true that many sports teams owners don't actually make large profits from their clubs (unless you're MLSE/Lakers Group/Dallas Cowboys).
i think the simple solution is adjusting the text colour to black if your having trouble changing the grey on grey layout.
He is using Leaf players as an example as that is what he knows best. This is just mindblowing the increases in salaries most of these players took.

As for Melnyk selling the Sens.. more Toronto centric media garbage. They don't know or care about anything outside of what is (in their minds) the borders of the centre of the hockey universe.
It has been reported that those 3 offers of the NHLPA last week included salary INCREASES at the beginning. And they wonder why the NHL took 10 minutes to refuse them.
So they are prepared to now lose 26% revenue in lost games to the end of November to save 13%. Sure makes sense to me. .. NOT.
how old is lupul? wouldn't he be on an entry level deal before the last lockout? when he signed his next contract he and others get a big pay raise because they finally get the million+ $ contract. seems like a bad idea to use a guy on an entry level deal as an example.
is this #nhl propaganda?
It was more than Lupul that he referred to but salary increases of 300 & 400%? Sorry but that's just ridiculous. No wonder the NHL is in the mess it is now. The Owners are mostly to blame and the players are out of touch with reality.
How do we find out if Spezza is hurt?
Do the Sens deal with this arrogant idiot?
Allan Walsh @walsha
Now, precious cap at risk, franchise values plummeting and NHLPA stronger than ever. Yup, job well done.
-----------
I guess he is the NHLPA's mouthpiece.
Sure it's great for the NHLPA for franchise values to plummet possibly reducing # of teams in the NHL and # of NHL players.
BOTH sides lie...the Owners & the players.
I don't see too many player agents mouthing off the way Walsh does. He thinks getting rid of the salary cap is a good thing?
Anything on Spezza yet?
An interesting read:
http://www.ottawasun.com/2012/10/26/examination-of-top-ottawa-senators-prospects-in-junior-and-college
"In the first season match against Rapperswil-Jona , which had to play without the sick NHL star Jason Spezza, the Lions had in the last nine minutes revealed 2-0 and still lost 2:3. This time, let burn the ZSC nothing more, it also brought the first goal from Michel Riesen (18), who met for the eighth time this season, not the concept."
Going to put a 'negative' on this one also?
Where's that Binghampton collaborator of yours? We need Bingo news to distract us from these CBA talks.
The news gets updated once a week on their website, its brutal! No point in redesigning the look if your not going to make good use of your communication platform...
I wish we could have better insight on starting lineups, injuries (Shane Prince??), player profiles, etc.
Anyways, looking forward to another BSens victory tonight.
I had put this article on one of my comments -- its from the Ottawa Sun review of prospects with Randy Lee. At least it's something.

And millionaires always tell us the truth ?
Is Cowen still out? I heard it was a muscle pull..
I guess when you add an extra 0 on the end of your salary figure, you lose your rights to be treated fairly, right? Because hockey isn't a job for these guys, it's a game right? Even though, like most workers, they put in hours and hours of commitment to their team through practices, charity events, games... But I guess if you enjoy what you do, you shouldn't get paid too much for it, since work + fun = no no?
These guys are living out their dreams but people too often forget this is all they have because they've invested so much time (literally their whole lives) into it. It sucks that there's no NHL, but they'll sort this out. Might as well support the other players in the OHL/AHL that are often over looked..
Sorry for the long rant, I am so annoyed of this lockout.
Normally this guy streams every Bingo game:

Looks like he is up all ready :)
help
apple user?
the ustream link looks good on iphone, u can airplay it to your tv if you have apple tv.
No not Apple, I just keep seeing the 'get Adobe Flash' icon where the hockey should be, but I have flash!
Why don't Sportsnet or TSN pcik up these AHL games?
Fuck you Bettman and Fehr, I fuckin' hate this no hockey shit.
the ustream link looks good on iphone, u can airplay it to your tv if you have apple tv.
all these threats by the nhl and cancelling games...
networks need to start cancelling nhl games and adding ahl or ohl games on a nightly basis,
come on its freaking cold outside and there is hockey being played.
our past time is being held hostage, streaming usually sucks and choppy to the point its barely watchable and a migrane risk.
networks need to tell betmen and the nhl to go F themselves and show other hockey games.
Hoping for a win today...
Not really so far though...
