  • We Aint Dead Yet

Everything that could go wrong for the Senators did in Game 4.

Despite being up 2-1 at the end of twenty minutes, you could tell the Senators were playing with fire. If not for the play of Craig Anderson, this game could have been ugly right off the bat.  The good news is, they ain't dead yet.

Welcome to SensChirp

For those of you that may have missed it, today I was lucky enough to have an article published over on the official website of the Ottawa Senators.

Obviously an extremely exciting opportunity and one that could mean some new visitors to this site in the coming days. If by chance you are here on SensChirp for the first time; allow me to introduce you to the website.

My name is Dave and I have run the website here at www.senschirp.ca for the past three years.  What started as the odd tip on the Sportsnet forums as either Chara03 or JoseCuervo has evolved into a full blown community and in my biased opinion, one of the best places to talk Sens Hockey on the net.

I am a fan first. Blogger second. I don’t claim to be a journalist and I know I’m not an expert (so don’t bother askin’ me, Andy!). I’ve always run this site as a hobby more than anything else. Sure there have been some perks along the way, but this is by no means my full time job.

My role on this site is simple. I do my best to keep the site up to date with all the latest information about our Ottawa Senators. I share inside information when it’s available. I toss in the odd rumour but am careful to label it as such. And I post any and all relevant information related to our team.

I do a regular Game Day post during the season. I post my thoughts on the game afterwards. It’s pretty simple really.

The real strength of this site is the readers.

Always up for a debate, the folks in the SensChirp comment section are what makes this place “go”.  This is a place for both die hard and casual fans.

On the days where I’m away from the computer or under the weather from a night in the Wisers Box, you can always count on the comment section. It’s almost like a twitter feed in a lot of ways. Readers post links from around the net. Post updates as they come. And post their opinions on the topic of the day. Only difference is here you can use more than 140 characters.

If you are new here, I welcome you.  If you’ve always been here, I thank you.

This is SensChirp.

  • Earlier today, I discussed the Shea Weber offer sheet and what it could mean for the Ottawa Senators.  The Sens have shown an interest in Flyers forward Danny Briere in the past and could revisit that if Philadelphia is looking to move some salary. Check out the post from earlier here.

Great article Chrip. I couldn't have summarized my feelings on last season any better. I feel it was a coming out party for Sens fans. We created an identity and swagger that we never really had before.

One of my favourite moments was during a tv timeout during Game 4. Michalek had just scored to make it 2-1 Rangers, but fans were on their feet to support the team in their comeback. You could tell the team got a lift from that. It was a full standing ovation that lasted the full two-minutes. I had never been so proud of Sens Army.

Great article Chirp, congrats!!! Made us proud.

I posted this in the last thread, just a comment about the Sens success and where people may have higher hopes thus season.

Don't forgot that while we played better than expected, a few teams under us in the standings, under performed. Teams like Buffalo, Washington and Montreal who had been projected to clinch spots from the get go but tanking early, opened the door for us. Remember, Washington pulled past us and Buffalo finally started to show its true colors late and made a push. If they'd started one week earlier I don't think we would have made 8th. Not a knock on Ottawa, just pure good luck on our part.

im guessing the briere/weber convo can carry on, on this post?

dany briere would just add to BM's clear obsession for either swedish or local talent.
my only worry is that dany is turning 35 this season, although he hasnt shown any real signs of age slowing him down, its bound to happen pretty soon.

i would still do anything to add him. I have a very tough time seeing philly move briere of all their expencive pieces. however if it was up to me, id try to add hartnell instead.

sidenote: i have no idea what philly line up would look like. their top line of hartnell-G-jagr is obviously done. theyll need some serious production from giroux and the sophmores.

I think Briere would be a good pick up - he's money in the post season! He still has at least 3 good years in him. + he'll sell some season ticket packages on the other side of the river. I'm thinking Philly would want Bishop and maybe a prospect(not a grade A one or they can shove it). All for it!

Hey Chirp,
Congrats on your first article in "Summer Guest Column Series" in the Senators Website. No doubt in my mind, that the Standing Ovation for Kyle Turris' overtime goal, was a
highlight of the season for Sens Fans !!

I was at that Game 4, and jumped out of my seat as the puck left Kyle's stick, and quickly struck the back top of the net !!

Let's make it into the playoffs in April 2013 !!

I think Briere would be a great fit in Ottawa. He already plays the system we are building and would be among the leaders in post season scoring in a Sens Jersey. We could use someone like him who's known as a post season spark-plug.

How much money do you think BM would be paying to Karlsson if we were to sign him now. And finally would just like to say, I think BM new how crazy this offseason was gonna be so that's why he got this deal done so quickly, Senators have one of the best GM's in the business.

Well when you think about it -- there is only about 5 or 6 GM's/owners in the NHL that have created the issue which they are now trying to correct in the CBA discussions.

And to add to the fact.. that 2 of these in Leopold (Minny) & Snider (Philly) are on the ownership committee bargaining in the new CBA and whining about the high player salaries. Look what they just signed. Now what a bunch of hypocrites.

I would think most of the GM's in the NHL can control (to a point) what they will spend and are responsible.

The next CBA needs to put in controls so that these 5 or 6 teams cannot make this mess again.

By the way, if there is another lockout/strike. . will there be another BINGO BUS?

Of course, until we see the results of his progress, "in the long term" we will not know if trading Rundblad was a good move. For now, he is a good 2c, who will get much better. It seems that Rundblad will take longer to develop,
but then again, he will not be as "elite" as Karlsson !

Trade was of great benefit for our Sens, as we have many
young defencemen who will replace the loss of Rundblad.

In the long term? Well since I have the ability to time travel, I am going to let you guys in on a little secret, this trade ends up being THE biggest reason the Sens......ah, you know what, there is no fun in that, I'll just let you guys watch the drama unfold.

On a serious note though, This was a great hockey trade - Runblad is a grade A prospect that a lot of people are high on, including the Sens organization. But in return we got a highly rated, two way, skilled centerman back in the deal.

Runblad became a little bit of a redundancy on the blue line with the emergence of EK, unfortunately. And it may turn out that the two of them patrolling our blue line for the next 10 years would have given us the most dynamic d-line/PP in the league, but we dealt from a position of strength (puck moving D) to address an organizational weakness.

Turris is an incredibly talented Center, which we have no real depth to fill the void behind Spezza and a slew of guys to fill out the 3rd/4th line C rolls. Turris is a guy who, i he reaches his full potential, could turn out to be just as dynamic as Spezza but with a defensive ability as well. Think Kopitar/Richard s...that could turn out to be what our top 2 C positions look like.

I think the move also showed us the organizations thinking on another prospect - MZ. Either they are not as high on him as some of us are, they believe he will be better suited to playing a top line/top 6 winger position in the NHL, or his max potential will be a top end 3rd line C.

Also the hurt of letting go of a dynamic defensive prospect like Runblad should be gone now that we have added Cody Ceci to the mix. He plays a very similar game to Runblad, but is a local boy.

That is just my opinion and it could be wrong.

There were definitely rumblings last year that the Sens were unhappy with the way Rundblad was progessing and that they weren't as high on him as they were whilst he was in Sweden.

It seems that Rundblad was having troujble taking what he was being told and what the coaches were asking him to work on and translating that information to the ice. He did seem to be making the same mistakes over and over again.

It's difficult learning your game in the NHL and Rundblad will probably turn into a very capable player but the emergence of Karlsson and Cowen made him slightly rendundant. When the chance came to fill a gaping hole in our lineup (2C) Murray took it.

I think that trade helped kick start the season. It took some of the pressue from Spezza and long term takes the pressure from Zbad should the organisation keep him. It's a lot easier matching expectations in a 3C role than a 2C.

Rundblad's departure did weaken the blueline prospect pool but that was partly filled by the drafting of Ceci.

Travis Yost of hockey buzz said that there is a big chance that Voracek very possibly could be getting an offer sheet. The negotiations are not going well with the flyers and they are not on close terms. Voraceks party seems to be stalling. He apparently is asking for 4-5 million and is a RFA. It would cost the sens their first and third. Would it be worth it for the sens to give Voracek an offer sheet and possibly give away their picks or not? Thoughts?

He was drasted in 2007 by Columbus (7th in First Round).
Last year he had 18-31= 49 points.

He wants about the same as Michalek( $4.3 million 35 goals ) ??

To me , he is worth about $3-3.5 million. Similar to Foligno deal in Columbus.

A definite NO on Voracek!!

I really don't think he's very good at all. And to pay a 1st plus for him would be down right ridicuclous.

Even if we pick 25th ish this year I see us getting a more effective player than him. Chances are we'll be around 15 again anyways.

I much prefer doing something for Briere.

Voracek is just another one of these terrible high 1st round picks by Columbus which ruined their team.

NO WAY!

I believe that the 2 teams will agree to a trade, rather than Predators matching the Flyers' offer.

Will see Flyers give Predators at least 4 First Round Picks,
or 2 Firsts and 2 current roster players.

I am 99% sure Nashville wants Couturier(can't say I blame them...I would also love him), one of the Schenns(possibl y both), then not sure what else.

It isn't too much though considering the guidelines, When you put names to the picks though it looks like a lot more.

If I were Nashville I would probably take those three mentioned and maybe allow the 2013 1st to be a 2nd and just be done with it...although you are still letting Philly away with less than they should have to pay.

Yeah I mean it's still four firsts it's just that if Nashville lets him walk those picks shouldn't be anywhere near top five picks.

I disagree. Couturier is much more of 3rd line centre style player compared to Turris who is much more of a pure offensive player. Which is exactly what we need. Turris will complement Spezza way better than Couturier or Zibanejad would.

We didn't make the Turris trade because Zibanejad wasn't that guy. He never was that guy. He's always been either a 3rd line centre or a 2nd line winger. turris on the other hand is an obvious 2nd line scoring/playmak ing centre. Some people thought Zibanjed was drafted by us to be our future 2C. That was never the case. This was only said by the media and/or the fans.

I still think Zibanejad has better natural skills to be effective in todays game then Couturier. He's a much better skater and shooter. He shoots it like Alfie. Loves the one-T's.

Anyone seen this Connor Mcdavid kid??

He looks absolutely unreal! Not saying were even going to have a chance at getting him on his draft year but after watching him play last night I was just shocked to see how good he is.

I'd take him over any of the past few 1st overall picks including the next one McKinnon

The #Bruins offer ON THE TABLE right now includes Krejci+ 2013 1st round pick+ 1 prospect which my source was unaware of. #NHLDucks

Apparently that'd the offer boston has on the table for Ryan...not sure Zibby/1st + prospect matches it.

Boston will be scary as hell with Ryan though

That's going to be a very tough offer for any team to beat. I'd do it of I was Anaheim depending on which prospect was involved. Krejci is a pretty damn good player himself.
