Sens Still Looking to Add (Thread 2)

(UPDATE 9:44 AM)- Sens forward Kaspars Daugavins has filed for salary arbitration.  Daugavins is a restricted free agent and hoping to land a one way contract through the arbitration process. The Latvian posted 11 points in 65 games with the Senators last season.

In the days and weeks leading up to July 1 and the start of free agency, there was plenty of talk surrounding the Ottawa Senators.

They were frontrunners in the Rick Nash sweepstakes. They were right in the mix when it came to landing NCAA star Justin Schultz. Yet here we sit on July 5 and the changes to the Senators roster have been fairly limited. And while you cannot completely judge an off season in early July, you have to think Bryan Murray and his staff are a little disappointed.

Murray can praise the youth movement and say he's happy with the current roster. Eugene Melnyk can rant about how all players should WANT to play in Ottawa. But the fact is, the Sens were vocal about wanting to make some significant additions this off season and so far, have come up short.

Now that’s not to say the additions they have made haven’t been good ones. Latendresse is a low risk option that if healthy, could be a useful player for Paul MacLean. Mike Lundin provides some depth to the back end. Marc Methot gives the Senators another top four defenceman and potentially a new partner for the defending Norris Trophy winner.

All safe moves that should help the team next year. Sure they lost the likes of Nick Foligno, Filip Kuba, Matt Carkner, and Zenon Konopka but there are plenty of players ready to fill those roles on the team.

Looking at the Senators current depth chart, there still appears to be a need for one more legitimate goal scoring threat. Someone who can slide in on Spezza’s wing and be counted on to score 20-30 goals. And that’s assuming the Captain is coming back for another season.

Jakob Silfverberg, Mika Zibanejad and Mark Stone are all hoping to grab spots in the top six but it might be unreasonable to expect them to fill that role this early in their development.

The good news is there are still some options out there. With Parise gone to the Wild, the belief is the NHL’s trade market will again heat up. The Senators will make some calls but there are going to be a number of teams looking to add. Alex Semin and Shane Doan are still available. Evander Kane’s name keeps coming up in Winnipeg. Bobby Ryan is unhappy in Anaheim. And Rick Nash is still looking for a new home.

Tim Murray was on the Team 1200 yesterday afternoon and made it clear the organization is willing to move a couple prospects if it means making the team better right now. From the start of June, the Senators have let it be known they are willing to move some quantity for quality.

Add to that the fact that the Senators still find themselves below the salary cap floor and it’s pretty clear, something’s gotta give.

So while Bryan and Tim Murray may say they are happy with the line up the way it is, you can bet they’ll be working the phones trying to add another piece before the season starts in…well I don’t really know when the season is going to start.

I have actually somewhat opened up to the idea of Semin...I still would be absolutely ecstatic if we found a way to weasel E Kane out of Winnipeg, I know it would be expensive but the kid is bloody 20 so we have him locked up!

Ryan sorta does scare me due to the UFA status in 3 years, it would really be a shame to end up without a bunch of our prospects and Ryan if he so decides to move on.

And Nash....Ohhh Nash, you would have been an instant favorite here....now I genuinely hope you rot in Columbus. Any rumored deals I have heard aren't even close to as good as what we were rumored to have offered. I hope Howson just waves his finger at him and says play.

Bwahahahaha I suddenly like Winchester a tonne more

Nice thing about Semin signing is that it has the side benefit of making Michalek "upgradable" --> see expendable

Michalek + prospect(s) for bobby Ryan? Yes please.

Although I would absolutely love to have Weber on the sens, I really hope he doesn't leave Nashville. I think losing him would be a critical wound and they wouldn't be able to recover from losing him.

Come on Chirp, new post hopefully with something JUIIIIICY!!

Such a boring time of year to be a sports fan.

Baseball...yeah I will pass unless it is maybe the World Series, and even then i am usually wanting to rip my eyes out after game one.

Nascar...hmmm driving a car around....you know what that sounds fun, why don't I just jump into my car and actually do it!

CFL...IS there ringette on tv?? That would be more enjoyable, or maybe a grass growing channel?

Golf is alright...but really highlights are enough/maybe the final day of the tournament if there are 4 or 5 guys really close together, but that rarely happens anymore.

I agree 100%, the downtime between Hockey and NFL is killer, I guess womens tennis is alraight too but only when the pretty ones play. They should invent a new sport for this downtime...too bad the LFL isnt a bit earlier...

Man... slow times in Senators land... Even of all the rumours our there about trade + free agents, I haven't come across anything Sens related. From Yandle to Semin to Nash to Ryan to Doan haven't heard a peep. Hopefully we are just really great at keeping this big deal we have percolating under wraps.

Ill challenge you on that last part about golf. I fyou follow golf this year you would know that there has been more playoffs than any other year. Only Tiger Woods, Hunter mahan and Jason Dufner are multi-winners on the circuit this year and that any given week, anyone could win such as Ted Potter Jr winning this week. Who? Exactly haha

Anyways, it certainly is boring time of year, but more the reason to go out and get active to make up for all the beer consumption done during sens season lol

Need more news, 3 days of nothing. What a long boring 3 days off from work nightmare.

Semin wants to stay in the NHL and make less money. Is that not some what of a sign? Radulov ran off for Crosby money in the KHL which he isn't close to worth.

I feel the same, no other sport keeps me as entertained as Hockey. I guess I'll just have to spend even MORE time with beers sitting by the pool.

Yeah, the fact Semin's agent has come out and said he'll be playing in the NHL, is a sign he isn't a runner for the KHL like a few others in the past. This is one of the biggest reasons I brought him up last week. And from the sounds of it, most Sens fans have had somewhat of a change of heart in regards to a possible Semin signing. It's good, because the kid has a butt load of talent and he would be that true 1st line Winger we've been after.
