  • Welcome to the Canadian Tire Centre

The Ottawa Senators have called a press conference for 10:00 AM this morning where it is expected they’ll announce a new partner and a name for the building once known as Scotiabank Place.

And while the reports have yet to be “confirmed”, some good detective work by a couple SensChirp readers leads us to believe the new sponsor is Canadian Tire and the building will be renamed The Canadian Tire Centre.  Plenty of reaction to the new name around these parts yesterday but the reality is it’s a good Canadian company now associated with the Ottawa Senators brand.

Draft Day- Sens Take Cody Ceci (Thread 4)

(UPDATE 9:12 )- After a first round full of surprises, the Ottawa Senators have grabbed Ottawa 67s star Cody Ceci with the 15th overall selection . Bizarre sequence of events in the opening fourteen picks so you have to think Bryan Murray and his staff are thrilled with this selection.

(UPDATE 5:50 PM)- About an hour to go till the draft and people seem to be opening up to the idea of a Nash deal not happening today. Really doesn't sound like either Murray or Howson is desperate for a resolution. Both Lebrun and Dreger suggest that Ottawa remains in the mix but his desire to play here remains in question.

(UPDATE 5:21 PM)- On to the third thread of the day. Incredible. There was a bit of a scare around 5:00 PM when a fake twitter account suggested a deal was done but obviously that is not the case. The real Darren Dreger suggested this Nash Saga could drag on into July and Murray suggested he hasn't even talked to Howson today.

(UPDATE 1:23 PM)- On to the second thread of the day as we surpass the 300 comment mark. Scott Howson spoke with the media at the draft and suggested that there is still a ways to go on any deal involving Rick Nash. Stress again the importance of not always taking the words of a GM on Draft Day at face value. So much posturing going on right now.

(UPDATE 1:11 PM)- Greg Thomson from Sportsnet has suggested on Twitter that the San Jose Sharks are now out of the Nash sweepstakes. Long believed to be one of the favourites, word is they weren't willing to meet the asking price set by Howson. Interesting.

(UPDATE 11:56 AM)- Bryan Murray addressed the media in Pittsburgh this morning and indicated that the Sens are still involved in talks on Rick Nash and that the 15th pick has not been part of the discussions.

(UPDATE 11:50 AM)- Renaud Lavoie, who previously indicated the Sens were out of the Nash Sweepstakes, now suggests that conversations are continuing and that budget may the issue for Ottawa. He also tweeted that the Senators have had no discussions on Jordan Staal. No surprise there.

(UPDATE 11:34 AM)- The biggest issue on the Rick Nash front is whether or not he has any interest in playing in Ottawa. Teams like San Jose and New York are on his list but have yet to meet the Jackets asking price. Ottawa remains in the mix though.

Wonder if we pull anymore moves in the first round. Anyone think BM makes a move tonight?

As someone posted in the previous thread... The East is going to look REALLY interesting next season. Pens, Lightning, Caps, Canes, and Sabres made some solid moves.

So excited, and there are still 3 months left to go!

Ceci was a great acquisition and I wouldn't be surprised if he's the guy they were talking about in the video when they were referring to moving up to get a guy.

As Murray said, they had him in their top 10!

Ceci will play for Sens much sooner. He is a big guy and good speed. He can clock lots of minutes.

BM needs to discuss with guys who will like to trade for with our roster guys like Butler or even Foligno (if the price is right). I will like to see we add Matta.

A quick note on Rick Nash. Was told that right now anyway, the asking price is too high. Fully expect the two sides to keep working at it. Clearly there was a framework there.

But in an interesting twist, some seem to think they may be able to make a play for Parise when free agency opens. Pretty skeptical on that but a great move if he's interested. One thing is clear, Murray wants to add some top line talent this off season.

Parise was always my preferred option, but I still think it's almost impossible. I just hope we get one legitemate top line winger. Spezza's in his prime and he's got no experienced help. It's a hell of a waste.

Well Lindholm was supposed to be mid 1st round pick, huge reach by Anaheim, the could of had him later like 2nd round.

Jankowski had a midterm rank of 74...

Either way its a terrible pick, especially at 21.

I don't disagree about the Calgary pick because its been a decade since they've made a decent pick.

But I wouldn't be surprised at all if Lindholm ends up being the best defenseman taken in the draft.

According to Scott Howson, there were no offers today for Nash. Also, if Yakupov fell to No. 2, Howson would have traded the pick.

Seriously Howson is a total moron. He is going to get a total crap deal in the end.

I hope Murray withdraws interest

Absolutely.

I can't fathom the asking price Columbus will want, but the gap between the offered and asking is suggested to still be enormous which implies the Zibanejad, Bishop, 1st; the Clowe, Pavelski, Demers; and the huge NYR offer at the deadline aren't close to getting it done.

Particularly with the moves being made today, the teams around us in the East (Northeast in particular) have added pieces that will ensure long run success.

Penguins are going to have an amazing D in 3-4 years to compliment their amazing offense. The Habs land the big center they've wanted for the last 20 years. The Sabres get two big centers, they'll be tough to shut down. The Bruins add a goalie, but its the picks from the last two years that will make them dangerous in the long run. Caps and Hurricanes keep adding depth pieces.

All of these suggest that we need scoring depth and strong physical forwards to compete in the East... in other words, don't trade Zibanejad.

I'm so pumped about being able to draft Ceci at 15. I was hoping that no matter what transpired yesterday with all the Rick Nash talk, that we'd still be able to hold onto our first round selection.

Ceci is going to be a beauty. I know him and Karlsson are both right handed shots, but the idea of Ceci hammering one timers from Erik on the powerplay is something to get excited about. He can skate like the wind and has very good size at 6'3'' 207 lbs. Our blueline is going to be sick in a couple more years.
