Feature Story

  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Alfredsson Will Play in Game 6 (Thread 2)

There have been some electric crowds at Scotiabank Place over the years.

When the Senators clinched the playoffs for the first time with a win over the Sabres, when Igor Kravchuk drove the nail through the Devil’s heart and in 2007 when a Stanley Cup Game was played in Ottawa. I expect all those to be rivaled by the crowd that packs SBP tonight when the Senators play Game 6 of their series against the New York Rangers.

Heading into Game 6 with a 3-2 series lead, the Sens have a chance to do something pretty special with a win over the Rangers tonight. As the number eight seed, the Sens were eliminated from the playoffs before the puck even dropped. But as this team has reminded us all year, that’s why they play the games…

In Game 5, we saw just how important it is for the Sens to get the first goal. Through the first 4 games, the Sens had barley any odd man rushes but once the Sens scored early in Game 4, they forced the Rangers to open up a little bit. The result was a number of excellent scoring chances for the Senators. Get the lead again tonight and we can expect more of the same.

The Sens and the SBP faithful should get a huge boost from the return of Daniel Alfredsson. Alfie missed the last three games with a concussion but will be in the line up tonight. That Alfie Chant that has picked up steam in these playoffs should hit another level when the clock hits 11:11 in the first period.

Swedish sensation Jakob Silfverberg was on the ice for the morning skate as was cagey playoff veteran Mark Stone. Both took turns on the top line but it looks like MacLean is leaning towards Silfverberg for Game 6. We'll have to wait till closer to game time to find out for sure.

Here is how the Sens are expected to line up.

Michalek-Spezza-Silfverberg
Foligno-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Smith-Neil
Konopka-O'Brien-Condra

Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Carkner
Cowen-Gonchar

If you are lucky enough to attend Game 6, get ready to make some noise. The crowd at Game 4 was absolutely electric but I expect fans to take it up a notch in this one. Don’t forget it’s a 7:00 PM start!!

GO SENS GO!

The refs missed contact on an icing, a late hit on Karsson and a two hander by Richards in one shift and they call that BS on Smith. Call an even game. Not a well reffed game so far. Hopefully it doesn't impact the outcome one way or the other.

I think I understand the logic of playing Silfverberg tonight. It takes him some time to get used to the NA game, so you might as well play him in a game 6 to try and make that happen. He's looked a little uncomfortable, but if the Sens advance, he'll be all that more ready for the next round when we'll need more snipers.

I have never, never, heard atmosphere like that at a hockey game. Not just in Ottawa, anywhere. What I wouldn't give to be there tonight. Love the Niel chant, and the Alfie chant was epic (especially since it actually had meaning this time).

My personal feeling is that Don Cherry's lost his mind. But the thing I really dont get is that he doesn't know any current players names. Lubinsky (Lubomir Vishnovksk) Lenchrist (Lundqvist) Nabossy (Nabokov) Lulongo. It's like they just show him a video clip and he goes off about it without knowing who anyone is.

Can McClain play his first 2 lines once in awhile. Hell love Z.Smith and konopka but hell - we have last change - Richards and Gaborik for f-sakes aren't Gretzky and Kurri. Stop matching. Fonzi has shortened his bench and our top six are just watching the game. No respect - play our best players. Speaking of best players can Spezza wake up. His apple turnover on our powerplay started the whole fiasco. It led to the Kuba penalty.

SPEZZA what a giggles goof head - WAKE UP 19!

Then they called that bs on Foligno. Then there is a momentum shift. I csnnot stand it when the refs are the story. Oh, and Silferberg is in over his head, which is understandable.

The Foligno call is an outrage and at the moment looks to have shifted the momentum of both the game and the series.

The team's response here is crucial, even if we don't end up winning.

Rangers are beating us at very loose puck and I can't believe how many times Spezza refuses to shoot. Silfver is completely lost out there. He doesn't have legs (jetlag?)

Keep the faith.

I really don't feel like the Sens have been all that bad. Not burying a couple of great chances up 1-0 is the worst offence so far.

SPEZZA - where is this guy's head - constantly giving away the puck! C'mon Spezza play a good 3rd period. Pressure doesn't suit the guy - its like its going to fast. During the season he's so cool. I would seriously take SPEZZ OFF THE POWERPLAY.

We are in yr one of a rebuild. Pegged to finish last. No. 8 seed vs no. 1 seed. Some questionable calls and we came unraveled a bit and couldn't make any passes and missed some assignments. But we have come back many times this yr and even against this team.

There are a few loses on here that claim to be fans and all they do is spew negative diarrhea.

They are clearly not real fans. I am just as pissed off about thatperiod as the next guy but suport the boys. Hold ur heads up highand lets do this.

Not gonna lie, I've held myself from saying it, but Zip is 100% right about Michalek. He doesn't deserve to be on the first line. I DO believe he's a stop 6 forward that deserves to be on the team, but he has been an absolute non-factor for almost the past 2 months dating back to regular season.

The thing about Michalek is that he isn't a winger who creates for himself. Many of his goals have been because of positioning and being at the right place at the right time. He doesn't have that great of a wrist shot, doesn't take many shots to begin with, and doesn't create a whole lot of offense. He does too much fruitless skating around for nothing and is easily knocked off of along the boards.

I wouldn't mind seeing Nicky switch with Milo. He's a guy who uses his speed and creates a little more.

For a guy who we are depending on to score goals, he has been a failure thus far.

But I refuse to blame this game on the refs. I do agree with the fact that Foligno was wrongfully penalised, but bad calls happen. Most of the penalties that did occur in the game, were indeed penalties. The Sens just took their foot off the pedal and played a sloppy game.

+2 #203 Sandy 2012-04-23 22:17
In game 5 when a scrum happened after a whistle.. pick out a Sens player and put him in the box.

Then tonight crosscheck Karlsson, after the whistle, into the boards no call.

Malkin can skate into Bryzgalov, with no Flyer players or Pens players around, and he gets nothing.

Yet Foligno is shoved into Lundquist and he gets called for goaltending interference .. which leads to a 5 on 3.. and a goal.

And don't get me started on the puck over the glass by the Rangers in the 3rd.. that doesn't get called.

And that bogus call on Silfverberg.

And Lundquist, as much as I respect him, has the gall to come out and say the NHL wants the Sens to win?

So Rangers, this is your plan -- to deflect this so it looks like the Sens are favoured by the league?.. What a joke.

The Rangers get dirty again in game 7.. Refs let it go.. want to make a bet it's O'Rourke... sorry Sens have no chance in game 7.

As much as I support them and cheer for them.. they can't fight 2 on 1.. it's doesn't work very well.. and Lundquist had that backwards.

Top it all off Chicago is losing to Phoenix... I hate to see a team lose when one of their best players is taken out by a dirty hit.

Go Sens.. give it your best... but I think you are fighting a losing battle...

Its all gravy boys

Sens are Awesome.

My oh my fans can be incredibly stupid can't they? Just reading a few of the posts on here tonight is shameful. First off cool it about the soft 5-on-3 call. Spezza's goal in the dying minute isn't a goal in any league. Neil very clearly pushed Lundqvist out of the net with his stick before the goal was scored. I will agree that getting a break that late makes it kind of not matter, but if Ottawa tied it up that would have been a huge controversy and rightly so.

The call on Foligno certainly a soft one. However, lets be honest here... Foligno knows his reputation and although I don't think it warranted a penalty he didn't truly do the maximum to avoid contact.

Overall the Sens lost the game because they took three penalties 200 feet from their own net inside the last 10 minutes of the second and failed to kill them off. Michalek, Foligno, and Silfverberg all guilty. None of them were good penalties to take and that is not the place on the ice where it's worth the risk.

Silfverberg looked pretty jet-lagged and frankly hasn't had any chance to adjust to the speed of the North American game much less the NHL playoffs. It was a gamble to put him in and we lost. However realistically he played very sparingly and the real loss was not being able to confidently roll 4 lines. I noticed the same problem when Stone played sparingly in game 5.

If I'm PM I'd go with this top six:
Michalek-Spezza-Alfie
Foligno-Turris-Butler

I think this is the group that gives Ottawa the best chance to win. The Sens need to get more out of the first line 5-on-5 although they were decent in game 6. We know that the second line can get it done and the 3 above mentioned showed some decent chemistry. It's time to try and get line one going too. Let the bottom six do their thing as they have all series. That way the Sens can roll four lines and just grind down the Ranger's short bench.

Go Sens Go!

Just to clarify I think the call against Foligno was bad given that it put the team down 5-on-3 and the ref should have let it go. My point is simply that all 3 penalties 200 feet from Ottawa's net could have been avoided. Realistically Ottawa was their own worst enemy in this game and hopefully they can improve on this performance in game 7.

Why Chirp.. don't get me wrong.. I love this team.. but the Rangers are a dirtier team on home ice.. and they more or less get away with it -- God they got away with a lot tonight. Watching the Sens vets lose their composure tonight when they should be leading the way.. is not helping the young guys. -- I'm sure they were frustrated with the actions of Mr. Peel tonight. He can't apologize this time for his mistakes .. it's too late for that...

It just seems to be an uphill battle.. and when you want your young team to have a fair chance in a game.. and not to get it.. (which has happened a lot this season) -- it just gives you a hopeless feeling.

The Rangers played a good game.. and the Sens lost it after that bogus call on Foligno... but you can't fight city hall.

The reason the Sens lost has nothing to do with Silfverberg or even Stone had he been in.. Sooner them than Butler.. Sens PK did not get the job done tonight... They kep taking penalities when they were on the PP.. that's so frustrating.

Get a new PP coach for next season guys.. the one now is not doing much...

This was a funny concept I've noticed all season long.

Every game the Sens are "expected" or "favourited" to win, like tonight, they end up losing. Every game they're not expected to win, they do. The team is just programmed to be an underdog. Whenever everybody doubts them and expects them to fold, that's when they shine through! Going into MSG they're not expected to win. Hopefully tradition holds true and they win it big in New York's barn!

The NHL couldn't have scheduled the game for Wednesday instead?

Fans seriously need to get off Michalek and Spezza. Every shift they take is against 5 Ranger's players who specialize in defense-first hockey. There just isn't a lot of room out there. Nobody is really scoring a lot in this series. Richards, Callahan, and Garborik certainly haven't created any more at even-strength. If you want to see that line do better - put Alfie on the line and give them a fighting chance against the tight checking Rangers defense.

The one place I think it's fair to be critical of Ottawa's star players is on the PP. In this area Spezza, Alfie, Turris, Michalek, and even to some degree Karlsson need to be better. This was supposed to be an advantage area for Ottawa in this series and to a man so far they haven't gotten the job done well enough. Heck one goal on the 2 PP's in the 3rd and us Sens fans are watching overtime tonight. They have to be much, much, better.

Laying it all on Michalek is just bullshit though. It's the same kind of crap Garrioch does for the Sun. It's a team game out there. That top line hasn't had an edge in their match-up in the series and it's been a defense-first series. It's not surprising the numbers are low.

Its frustrating to have to battle the refs over and over and over again. Ultimately though, we are beating ourselves. Dismal fucking powerplays and an obscene amount of turnovers and soft ass plays by our stars...

If we lose this series, look no further then Spezza, Karlsson and Michalek. Thoroughly unacceptable playoff performances from our "stars"

I'm not throwing in the towel just yet though. There's still a ton of heart left on this team. But I don't know if I'll be able to watch Thursday...

It wasnt a bogus call Sandy, Foligno clearly ran Lundqvist, it wasnt like Kreider's penalty on Anderson, now that was bogus...but still the refs are watching for it. Foligno's penalty was much more deserved than Kreider's.

Sens PP & PK sucked, need to score on the PP...

Like I have been saying for weeks, the numbers don't lie. If the SENS are going to win on Thursday, they need to score 3+ goals and will only do so by taking advantage of their PP chances. They should give Mark Parrish a chance. He's been a power play specialist and goal scorer his whole carreer. Give him chance on the top line. I'd go with experience over inexperinced youth right now.

Ottawa will win on Thursday. No need to panic.

I thought they played an overall great game, not counting that stretch late in the second period (why is it always late in the 2nd?).

Whether you think the call on Foligno was bogus or not (I think he was clearly pushed into Lundqvist), that was the TSN turning point of the game.

MacLean needs to show them tape of how they played at the end of the 3rd, and somehow get them to play with that kind of intensity throughout the game.

They have 3 days to decide who will be in lineup for Thursday nights game 7. No need to rush into any kind of decision. Let Silfverberg, Stone, Butler, etc., practise hard and see who deserves to be in. Good problem to have.

P.S. Alot of Alfie bashing on Team 1200 this morning, saying he was a bad leader for blowing up like he did. Bullshit. Utter nonsense.

Why the hell are some of you blaming Foligno? If you actually took your heads out of your asses and watched, you would have seen that he was pushed into the goalie and the ref made a shitty call. Outside of that he was fine.

The refs weren't the ones standing around after the goal letting Stefan skate in and pass it to Kreider. It was horrible defence by Ottawa and terrible coverage by Spezza. That goal was a backbreaker and basically sealed the win for NY.

We have time to regroup to go into NY and win game 7. As a few of you have said, win or lose, this series proves that the Rangers don't have what it takes to win the cup. We just need to capitalize on any momentum we have and not look back.

+1 #234 Alcatraz 2012-04-24 08:10
Im not gunna say who should play and who shouldn't play. Silfverberg didn't lose us the game, nor did Foligno. Like a poster previously said, taking 3 penalties 200 feet away from your own net in a 10 minute span will kill any team. We just need to be more discipline

Now my biggest issue. I know he is having a great series on the draw and killing penalties, but Kenopka was played wayyyy to much last night. Maclean is getting wrapped up in the hype of winning face offs and line matching here in the playoffs. For the life of me I can't understand why a guy who was virtually benched and scratched the entire 2nd half of the year can then play meaningful minutes in the playoffs including 20 shifts and 15 minutes in the most pivitol game 6

Also, no one here talking about Matt Carkner not returning to the game and only played 6 minutes, which means Gilroy could draw into the lineup for game 7

Finally only alfie, michalek and spezza played more than Kenoopka amongst our forwards. That can't happen in game 7 regardless how good kenopka is on the draw.

OK,

Foligno should be shot. I love the guy, but I can't stand watching him any longer. I know I'm just upset about the loss, but it's tiring cheering for someone that makes the same mistakes over and over again. I still hope that he matures, keeps playing with an edge, and learns when to pass and shoot. Most of all, he needs to stop taking bad penalties. Apart from those things, he's fucking Claude Giroux.

Also, to those that have vacated the bandwagon; we've won 2 of 3 at MSG this postseason... so, ya... better rethink that 'all is lost' attitude.

I'm not blaming him for the loss. I'm just getting sick of the deficienies in his game. Same way I get angry when Spezza turns the puck over, or when Karlsson misplays the body.

Also, Foligno could have made an attempt to get out of Lundqvist's way. I agree it was a weak call, but the refs made an equally weak goalie interference call against NYR. If you're Foligno being pushed into the net, do a better job 'making an effort' to get out of the way - it looked like he was trying to belly flop on the goalie. If Foligno made more of an effort, or if he didn't have a history of running goalies, he wouldn't have had the call go against him.

cooler heads need to prevail here...yeah Sens stunk it up a bit, refs may have had a hand in it too, but with all that, we still only lost 3-2 against the supposed top team in the East....forget it...and get ready for the 1 and done on Thursday...than kfully I am sure the team is not dwelling on this loss, same with the coaching staff. Even if Ottawa loses game 7...this season is still a huge success...they qualified for the playoffs in a year where they were picked by everyone to be a bottom feeder, then once they made it, they were picked to be gone in 4 or 5 games by experts all over the place, however, they never listened to any of it, and have given the Rangers everything they could handle. The pressure is still on the Rangers here, not the Sens, they have the expectations of the fans/league to move on, but for us, this is all gravy. That being said, I am not ready to shave off this playoff beard and not yet ready to give up watching hockey. I won't call this a rant, and am sure a lot of this negativity I am seeing is just a knee jerk reaction to an undesired result, just wipe the slate clean, move on, and look forward to Thursday night where all the pressure is on the Rangers, and last time they were in that situation, Ottawa fared pretty well riding the play of Anderson. Believe fans...Believe. ..we are not done yet....the young kids from the B-Sens were in this position just last year in game 7's, so to be honest, am liking how most of our team may have more experience in this kind of scenario than the Rangers. Now comes the excruciating wait until Thursday night..... Go Sens Go
