Turris the Hero as Sens Draw Even

All it took was one.

With the New York Rangers holding a 2-0 lead in the second period, you could tell the Scotiabank Place crowd was waiting for something to cheer for.  Spezza hit Matt Carkner coming out of the box and he fed Milan Michalek who cut the lead to one. From there the Ottawa Senators and their fans took over.

If you were lucky enough to attend the game, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

After being shutout in Game 3, it was a crowd that was desperate for a goal.  When Michalek's backhand beat Lundqvist, the momentum seemed to be too much for the Rangers to contain.  During one second period tv time out, the crowd stood and cheered the whole way through. No music. Just pure emotion from the SBP faithful.

Not long after that ovation, it was Sergei Gonchar that willed a point shot past a shell shocked Rangers goalie and suddenly the Sens had pulled even.

Both teams had their chances with the game tied but Lundqvist and Anderson were both up to the challenge, ultimately sending this game to overtime.

Facing the possibility of draw even or be forced to the brink of elimination, the Ottawa Senators responded in a big way.  Jim O'Brien fed Kyle Turris with a perfect drop pass and Turris beat Lundqvist with an absolute laser to pull the Sens even in this series.

Obviously plenty of players deserve recognition in this one because honestly, each and every Senator left it all on the ice in Game 4.  But in particular you have to love the play of Matt Carkner.  After serving a one game suspension on Monday, Carkner showed up in a big way on Wednesday night.  He was at his physical best and his set up on the Michalek goal completely changed the momentum in this game.

Safe to say he's in the line up again for Game 5.

My hat goes off to each and every fan in attendance tonight.  The hometown faithful showed exactly what is possible when the crowd gets behind their hockey team.  By far the best atmosphere I have ever experienced at a game played at Scotiabank Place.

The Sens have a full day off and will play Game 5 of this series on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I woke up this morning with the biggest smile on my face. The Sens got off to a bad start last night, but battled back and outplayed the Rangers for the majority of the game. That's kind of been the story of the series so far. I really believe the Sens have been the better team throughout the first 4 games.

This team continues to prove people wrong. Even in the face of adversity, with their captain out in the most crucial of games, they turn it up a notch and tie the series against the favorite. One win at MSG arena will really make this thing interesting.

One step closer to ROUND TWO FELLAS.

All the pressure is on New York now. Tortz keeps saying that the Rangers play the "right way". Well I think Tortarella is going to realize soon that his style of play is a difficult one for his players to execute throughout a long season and playoffs.

The physical style of the Rangers and their desire to throw themselves in front of every puck directed on their own net is going to wear them down. You could see it last night. They look like they're getting tired. Sens are owning the puck for the majority of the games and are starting to figure out how to get to Lundqvist.

It's time to get a lead in game 5 and take control of this series. If we can get the first couple goals on saturday it will force the Rangers to play a completely different game, our game.

Amazing game!

I love this team. So much fun to watch.

Mad props to Paul Maclean and the entire coaching staff. To me this is all on them. The team really shouldn't be keeping up with new york. The coaches are able to get the team to play as one. You always hear that analogy but I as a sens fan had never experienced it first hand until now. The team seems to fix the right issues every game. They are never out of a game. Little things the PM apparently telling Turris at the morning skate not to fight the puck, that he's a good player and the bounces will come...this makes the difference between winning and loosing.
If Paul Maclean doesn't win the Jack Adams ill actually loose my shit

Anyone see the tool in the leafs jersey at the end of the game? The camera panned to him as people were cheering and leaving. That kind of shit is so ignorant.

But anyways... it was a sick game! I'm pretty sure my neighbours hate me now. I'm lucky I didn't get a noise complaint. I'm also lucky my wife was out with her friends!

Beat them up at home on Saturday and take the series on Sunday boys!!

At one point during the broadcast, Bob Cole said something like "The crowd has decided that now is a good time to cheer on their captain Daniel Alfredsson." Apparently the 11:11 chant was loud and clear enough that even Bob Cole was able to figure it out. Then he called Gonchar Karlsson and Zack Smith Spezza.

I have to say, I can't believe anyone wanted Konopka and Carkner traded at the deadline for anything we could get. It's this time of year in the playoffs that players like these two guys prove their worth.

Konopka is a face-off wizard and a great penalty killer. He has limited skills but he's far from a liability when he's on the ice.

Carkner is an intimidating presence on the blue line. He may not have great foot speed but he's physical and is responsible with the puck, and can move the puck quite well for a tough guy.

The biggest value these two guys bring to the team is in the dressing room. They're both loved by their teammates and really are the glue that helps keep this team together. They provide great leadership and the other players know that no matter what, Carks and Z will have their backs.

I for one really hope Murray keeps both Carkner and Konopka around going into the future. Even if they don't have a regular spot in the line-up, they have great value as the 13th forward and 7th defenseman on the team.

Go Sens Go!

Man reading a recap of the game, by Chirp or the Black Aces post... it almost tears me up a bit last nights game was so emotional. I hope for the players, all that emotion helps them refill the tanks for Saturday. our two wins so far this series? Built 100% of sheer will and determination.

Carkner had only averaged 3:05/TOI for each of the first two periods and in the second only had 2.5 mins on the ice. Why is that, you ask? Because he creates zero opportunities and takes inopportune minors and can't be counted on when the team is down by one or more goals. For example, if the NYR would have capitalized when he was in the box, the team would have been down by 3 goals and everyone would be hating Carker. What happened was Spezz made a gutsy (and lucky) pass to Carks getting out of the box, Carks BOBBLED the puck, got a lucky bounce to get it back on his stick, and then Michalek did a decent job of potting.

There is nothing to love about the play of Carkner and anyone who sings his praises is a homer.

Where's the freaking EEYORE guy when we need him?

FWIW: Carkner knows his role and plays it very well. He's a bottom pair or even 7th D but he doesn't need big minutes to contribute in a playoff game. Setting up MM9's goal was a cagey effort. Watch the Sens TV clip of them coming off the ice after the game and then tell me Carkner's not a key part of this team.

For those of you that wanted some other players names chanted, Alfie for sure happened, spezza happened and andy happened. So we are spreading the love out there. The best player on the ice for sure was Carkner. He has provided this team with so much heart. And he is the only D man to shoot the puck when he can, and boy does he have a shot. the other thing i loved about the game was that ottawa was cycling the puck and themselves on the PP. Finally Cameron has got the boys moving instead of staying in one spot and passing back and forth. Unreal game, I cant wipe this stupid smile off my face. GO SENS GO

I simply love the way MacLean has been guiding this team all year and especially since it became clear we were a playoff team.

Every single comment and interview is based in "building" and "learning". He's putting zero pressure on the guys to win but a ton of pressure on them to develop their game.

Even if we don't get past the Rangers this playoff series has been like an extra year of rebuild. Guys like Turris, Karlsson, Cowen and the Bingo muckers have all learned so much about themselves and how to play in the NHL in the past few weeks.

Similar to how Spezza learned in the 2007 cup run then again against Pitt where he had the impossible task of trying to contain Crosby. That sort of experience can't happen in the regular season and in the not-too-distant future when we're battling for the cup it will make all the difference.

Loved the energy from the crowd last night and in game 3 as well. Place was rocking all night as it should be.

Can't wait for games 5 and 6!

What a game! I have to agree with Chirp and others, Carkner was a key player last night. It wasn't only in the defensive zone or on the Michalek goal, he actually created several offensive opportunities. For a pylon, his passing was decent last night and I'm glad the whole team was able to rally through the adversity of this game and series.

Butler played ok, but I'm really hopeful Silfverberg or someone else can replace him in the lineup soon as he can't seem to capitalize.

All in all though, great game top to bottom of the roster. GO SENS GO!!!

That's correct.

Actually kinda sucks for Ottawa as we're a younger and deeper team so would almost rather a tight schedule to force Fonzie, er Torts, and his 2-line team to play with minimal rest while we roll 4 lines.

Either way, this series is completely winnable. Just have to play like we played in most of game 3 and the final 50 minutes of game 4. Keep up that pace and don't get too down if the Rangers manage to score and we can take the series.

Hockey, especially playoff hockey, obviously takes a very big physical toll on the players.

I for one would not prefer a back-to-back game, as a matter of fact I wish in the NHL playoffs there were NEVER back-to-back games. Diminishes the quality of the games and really doesn't give teams a fair shake to put out their best effort IMO.

Not saying playing consecutive days - though even that would be our advantage I think.

Just saying that since Fonzie is only playing 2 1/2 lines and the Rangers are generally older that a single day off between games would hurt them more. Our guys are younger and we're spreading the minutes out more.

We've got two days off before game 5, one before game 6 then 3 days off before game 7 is necessary.

Back-to-back is stupid in the playoffs for sure, but in our case it would probably help.

Still think we can win in 6 and if it goes 7 we're still in good shape - just would rather the Rangers don't get three days to rest up before a potential game 7.

F@(# it - just win it in 6 boys!!

He could very well be gone next year to make room for other guys but I guarantee you that Murray would love to have room to keep him as a 7th D (which is what he really is).

Why do you insist on shitting on him? Can't a role player make a nice play and help his team?

I don't really agree with anything that Dale wrote, but clearly Carkner was watching the play and didn't know the door had been opened for his release. LOL. He seemed stunned that the door was opened. Lucky for us, the delay in him leaving the box worked in our favour. However, it was far from intentional.

Heard the atmosphere was the best at the SBP since Eberle tied the game late. I was there that night and to this day it is still one of the greatest nights of my life.

I'll be there for Game 6. Hoping for some more magic!

That was the best game I've been to - hands down! The atmosphere was so fun. After the first goal, everyone continued to cheer throughout the commercial break. I've never experienced that before. Amazing, simply amazing!

Quoting CraigL:

I thought Konopka showed a ton of leadership when calming Foligno (after bogus call) so that he wouldn't get the 10 minute.

I noticed that too. If he didn't go over to calm Foligno down (with less than 6 mins to go in a tied game), the refs could've given him an extra two mins for misconduct. That was huge! I really hope Murray brings back Konopka.

Don't know for sure if he planned it or it was a fluke, but TSN's highlights made a point of pointing out that he timed it that way.

Doesn't prove anything of course but even if it was more luck than anything else, why would someone feel the need to shit on the guy on a freaking Sens blog?

Agreed, I don't understand negativity given the year we've had.

Every player has a part, the collective is key to success.

Fair to say that without either player, we would be a significantly different team. Better or worse? Who can say but I like they way things are clicking!

If Winchester is out I suspect Daugavins to replace him, there style is very similar and seeing as Daugavins has taken the pre-game skate twice before heading to the press box would indicated he’s next in-line.

Klickhammer just doesn’t do anything for me...I know he works his a** off out there but doesn’t everyone? I really have never understood the infatuation with this guy...besides of course his awesome name!

True statement Craig.

I would have been totally fine with guys like Kuba, Carkner and Konopka being dealt at the deadline but now that seems like it would have been crazy.

Of course if some GM was ready to overpay for any of those guys it's probably still the right move but glad we have them now.

I have been pretty lucky over the years at being at some big games at SBP. Igor Kravchuck's empty net goal against the Devils in game 6 in 1998, Shawn Van Allen's OT winner in game 1 against the Devils in 2003, game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 2007, Eberle's goal in 09. But last nights crowd ranks as the loudest I have ever heard. It wasn't just the OT winer, but pretty much the entire game, even when the Sens were down, the crowd never let up and definitely it reached a fever pitch for Gonchar's goal.

This team may lack the talent of the teams in the early 2000's, but the heart and guts of this team is what those teams lacked. I can only assume that the Sens would have won multiple Cups back then.

GO SENS GO

I hope it carries over a bit into next year. I know "playoff atmosphere" isn't really possible in the regular season, but hopefully our regular season crowds get a bit louder each year.

The past two games (and a few home games near the end of the year) have been great but we need more energy in the regular season too.

Need to lose that "morgue" nickname that players have for SBP!

It's understandable. Some November games you can clearly hear talk on the ice between players like it's a men's league game.

I get that it's hard to be loud and proud playing Carolina in November, but hopefully we can get a little better each year.

Carks may be nothing more than a 7th d-man...he may or may not have planned that play last night, but guess what, it happened, it was a huge catalyst to us winning, and he made the play...give credit where its due...I am sure he didn't intend his goal 2 years ago in 2OT or 3OT to go in against the pens, but it did, he took the shot, and was the hero for the day. Give credit where credit is due is all anyone here is asking for Carks.

Admittedly, Carkner was not very good this year when he came back from injury. BUT, the way he played last night was how he played in the two seasons before this year. Always a solid #6 defender who made smart plays to move the puck out of his zone. I remember when he made the team, I was really surprised he did over someone like Lee. But then you watched him and you knew why. Tough as hell and a smart reliable player. He just has no skill or speed to add to his hockey IQ. Any other team would love to have him as an option on the blue line and that is why he will stay a Sen. He was going to regardless of how this playoff played out, IMO. you don't want to lose a guy like this. He costs nothing and is a perfect #7.

Anyone who says otherwise doesn't watch, and is basing that on reptutaion alone. There is a reason he made the lineup over other guys when he first came here. Also, he gets a lot of reputation penalties too.

If I'm Murray I tell the kid to go celebrate with his team and grab a flight tomorrow. Playing Saturday is out of the question at this point (series tied, not down 3-1; he needs a practice or two with the team; his legs will be jello after 12 hours on a plane etc).

Option for game 6 maybe but only if we have a forward that's really not bringing it.

Excellent points and here is the way I see it.

- we acquired Gilroy, Carkner sat

- Gilroy struggled

- Carkener drew back in and was vastly improved playing like a guy with something to prove

- Since then Carks has been great. Strong, reliable, big battler, getting better and better with the opportunities he's gotten and has culminated this with an AWESOME playoff run so far.

The guy has a lot of heart he is able to translate into hard nosed effectiveness, and the guy knows his role, unlike some fans.

Once Silverberg gets over here I'd sit either Butler or Winchester. Butler is obvious as to why and Winchester makes plenty of nice defensive plays but most of the time it's because he was out of position to start with, like that goal mouth save last night. I'm really not a fan of Winchester's game, but I know that's not the general sentiment here.

Actually, I am quite juvenile… and Carkner probably won’t be resigned… and that might be his last NHL playoff assist. Point is – you’re a douche for adding nothing else to the conversation other than harsh words for a guy that has played himself black and blue for this great organization.

To sum up:

You’re a douche, and I’m juvenile; cool beans, man. One is a term for someone that hasn’t fully matured yet – accepted. The other term – a receptacle for vaginal waste…

How was Winnie out of position on that play? Isn't the center basically the third D in his own end? Playing his man wasn't he?

I'm not looking at a reply so I could be wrong, and not saying he's always in the right spot either. Just not sure that play is a good example.

But yeah Butler was "last in" and only drew in because we needed a guy with some hope in the top 6 otherwise it probably would have been Daugavins coming back in. So Silfverberg taking his spot makes some sense since Butler isn't going to get 6 shots on goal playing on the 4th line.

But Winnie might be out too anyway - anyone heard about his upper body injury last night? Or even see the play where he got hurt and able to guess what the injury is or how bad?

Hax aka Homer #2: If by cagey effort you mean luckluster and lucky, I will totally agree. I know that Carkner is not a big part of this team because he spot will be easily replaced by one of the promising young guns coming up from Bingo (ex. Borowiecki).

Boivo aka Homer #3: Like I said, if NYR would have scored on Carker's minor the game would have been 100% different. I don't disagree that Carkner was better than quite a few players on the ice but to put him on a pedestal is riiiidiculous.

Whoever on this thread mentioned that Carks is a PMD aka Homer #4: haha sure!

Listen folks, I love the heart and soul this guy brings to the team but plain and simple, he won't be back as a starter for this team next year.

Yes I totally agree. To me he looks like a bonafied 2nd liner..similar to Michalek. Honestly think he may end up being all around better than Zibanejad. Zib loves the one timers and is damn good atthem but silfvers release is just deadly. If he can dominate the Swedish elite leaguethe way he did then I have no doubt he can do the same in the NHL some day (and that's being close to a point per game similar to Alfie). I agree that he's likely the better sniper, but I wouldn't get too carried away as his big knock is he is not physical enough. It will all depend on if he's able to translate his game to the more physical NHL game. I'm pretty hopeful he will though, much like you!

He'll likely be in the pressbox (and fresh off a plane) on Saturday and might draw in Monday. Dreger and Simpson seem to think he will anyway. Others have suggested it wouldn't be until round 2 but if Alfie is still out I could see MacLean rolling the dice a bit.

I've stated all along that MacLean is very system oriented and wouldn't want to parachute a guy in but Alfie being out changes things a bit.

I agree that the last 2 playoff games have been awesome. Maybe it's because this young team was so disrepected all season for being no better than 15th in the East.

I must admit that during the season I was down on Konopka for the penalities he took.... but he is made for playoff hockey. He is very good in the faceoff circle and physical...

Turris did mention that at practice earlier this week... McLean told him to loosen his grip... he is a very good player and it would come to him. Turris said the confidence the coach had in him.... was great. I'm sure McLean was trying to calm Spezza down on the bench. He is such a great coach... what a hiring by Murray.

Two of the 3 goals were scored by shooting high into the net... the 2nd through a screen. So the Sens know to shoot high now...

The Sens have approx about 30 shots on the net per game in this series, correct? But how many are being blocked and not getting through. How tired or sore are those Ranger D getting?

I hope the Rangers play a clean game on Sat... I have a feeling they will try to get dirty again. I would sit Alfie out until game 6....

The Sens have a lot of confidence right now... the Rangers a lot of pressure.

Let's go Sens... get that win in Game 5... Can you imagine game 6 at SBP if the Sens come back with the series lead? I can hardly wait...

Gotta love Walter Gretzky:

From the Post:

O’Connor: Do you watch much hockey?

Gretzky: I go to the Air Canada Centre and watch the Leafs play. Isn’t that something, that rink is filled all the time?

Do you know the difference between the Leafs and the Titanic? Nothing. They both go down as soon as they hit the ice.

You know how you can tell it’s springtime in Toronto [laughing]? All the Leafs are out.

You know the difference between the Leafs and my lawnmower? Nothing. They both spend the winter in the basement.

Well most of the "talking heads" seem to think he's got a good shot at playing, but I think it's possible that MacLean might say "he won't play until he proves he knows the system well enough".

MacLean keeps repeating every time he talks to the media how it's a team effort, team game, "playing our game" etc. Dropping a guy in who's never played a game in Bingo, let alone Ottawa and hasn't practiced with the team since the fall doesn't fit that approach.

Though with Alfie out all bets are off. If they figure his skill means he can provide more than a guy with less skill (Butler) but better knowledge of the system then he'll play.

@ All above,

Might be the missing link and replacement for Alfredsson ,once our Captain does retire.

As good as he is, he has to learn our (Maclean's) system.
Therefore, he nedds to learn it from practicing a few times,
and it might not force Murray, to sign a sniper and linemate for Spezza.

Could see him in the lineup in Round 2 !!

Michalek - Spezza - Stone
Foligno - Turris - Petersson
Silfverberg - Zibanejad - Alfredsson
Greening - Smith - Neil

I know we'd never have 4 rookie forwards in the top 6 and I personally think Stone (and maybe Petersson) needs some AHL time - hence the "fantasy" part.

Why not the Sens Store on site? Or if you're worried it's too expensive there then there's a Clubhouse right near there at Centrum Plaza (Terry Fox and Campeau). There's also a Hockey Life in that same mall near the Clubhouse.

he was co-captain, silfverberg became full, captain in the playoffs. I'm not sure if dackell was dedicated to the full season.

Dackell blew out a knee 6 games into the playoffs and had been Captain for at least 3 years . ? dedication ? but why was Silf wearing jersey number 100 ? that was the question

He's wearing #100 cause it's the 100 year anniversary of brynas and he's the best player and captain

I think the most realistic line up scenario for next season would be:

Silfverberg-Spezza-Michalek
Zibanejad-Turris-Alfredsson
Foligno-O'Brien-Neil
Greening-Smith-Condra

I really think that O'Brien deserves to play next year, for the limited amount of minutes he has played, he has played the most solid. I also noticed that he can skate up and down the ice really well, exemplified by yesterday's game.

I gotta say that was the best sporting event I've ever been too! Even better than a sox/ Yankees game at Fenway! 300s were rocking and everyone was into it and I think it truly showed on the ice. Even after the game I saw sens fans collectively go wild like I've never seen before

So proud to be a sens fan right now!!

@hax i was thinking of grabbing it at the sens store when I was at game 3 but I just figured they would be cheaper outside of SBP (here at the ACC or Rogers Center shit is marked up like 20-30%)...I'll give the other places you mentioned a looksy thanks

@57gord ...tried kijiji over here in T.O. lol nothing and I wouldn't bother looking over there in Ottawa I wouldn't have enough time to coordinate a meeting with anyone to get it

sucks too cause I was gonna grab a turris jersey and he actually stopped that night to sign an autograph for me and my sister...would have had a signed turris jersey :( but a signed hat aint to shabby

Are you guys reading the same stuff I'm reading over on Facebook? Silfverberg is on his way to join the Senators possibly for game 6 at home? This kid is getting hyped to the point of comparing him to NHL superstar status. Everyone in these parts of town are taking about him. Who would you guys compare him to? The only real issue I have I guess is that a year would be removed from his ELC, no? Anyhow he seems to be the real deal, I mean, for people to be already putting him on the top line? No doubt he makes the line up next year but now is the playoffs. Here are some highlights of Brynas' victory.

Peter Forsberg compared Silfverberg's finish to that of Stamkos's, according to a Travis yost article.

Wow...........!!!

Just might happen as early as next season, but I see you
did not pencil in Stone??

If Alfredsson decides to retire, I can see Stone on Line 2 as a RW !

Exciting future, and great times to be a Sens Fan .

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!

Silf will continue to be hyped until he finally laces it up, that's what happens in these situations. What was originally being seen as a secret weapon in the works has now gone global. My only worry is people are expecting the second coming of Forsberg. Don't get me wrong, most playoff goals in SEL, MVP, this kid has what it takes. But it may take a little time before it translates in the NHL. So if he gets a shot and struggles in the first game, I'd hate to see fans get down on him. But he will play, especially with Alfie out of the lineup. As for burning his ELC, he already did while playing in the SEL this year, so he technically has a year in, only reason why he can come and play in our playoffs.

Can't wait till Saturday, would have loved to see that game being aired tonight but what can you do. Guess we're stuck watching the Preds flush Detroit while Philly tries to tame the sleeping Dragon they awoke in Pitts.

I was at the game and the crowd was nuts. I had no voice when I showed up to work 30 mins late.
