  • Murray Speaks- Alfie, Draft, Budget and MacLean

Lost in the hype around yesterday’s announcement surrounding the new Canadian Tire Centre, or The Wheel House as Sens fans have dubbed it, was an interesting interview with Sens GM Bryan Murray.

In the article posted on the Senators website,  Murray discussed a variety of topics including the future of Daniel Alfredsson, plans for draft day, Paul MacLean’s future and how the new agreement with Canadian Tire may impact the team’s salary structure for next season.  Plenty to digest in just a few paragraphs but I thought I’d share my thoughts on what Murray had to say.

Game Day- Sens Return to Action vs. Philly

After a seemingly endless four day break, the Ottawa Senators finally return to action this afternoon when they visit Claude Giroux and the Philadelphia Flyers.

With just five games left in their regular season, the Sens need to find a way to pick up as many points as possible down the stretch including this weekend against the Flyers and Islanders.  It all starts with an afternoon date in the city of Brotherly Love.

While the last four days of scoreboard watching have been generally unfavourable for Ottawa fans, the Pittsburgh Penguins did the Sens a huge favour last night by beating the Sabres in Buffalo.  The Panthers lost in Columbus and suddenly find themselves in a battle for their own playoff lives. Scoreboard watching has been fun and all but it will be nice to finally have an actual Sens game to watch.

The Flyers appear to be settled into the 5th spot in the East but still have an outside shot of catching Pittsburgh and grabbing home ice in the first round.  They have two head to head games left with the Pens including tomorrow afternoon in Pittsburgh.

The Sens won't have a morning skate today but MacLean passed along line up notes at yesterday's practice.  No line up changes expected from the combinations that beat Winnipeg on Monday night.  Here is how the Senators are expected to line up.

Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-Turris-Alfredsson
Daugavins-Smith-Condra
Klinkhammer-O'Brien-Neil

Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
Phillips-Carkner

Craig Anderson gets the start in the Ottawa goal.  Puck drop is scheduled for just after 1:00 PM with all the action available on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Plenty of games to keep an eye on tonight including the Buffalo Sabres in Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals visiting the Montreal Canadiens.  As much as Sens fans hate the Leafs and Habs, those two teams could really help Ottawa's cause if they could do the unthinkable and win a damn hockey game tonight.

Here is how the standings look heading into Saturday's games.

Bruins 94 (5)- @Nyi, @Nyr, PIT, @Ott, BUF
Panthers 90 (4)-@Det, WPG, @Wsh, CAR
Devils 94 (4)- @Car, NYI, @Det, OTT
Senators 88 (5)- @Phi, @Nyi, CAR, BOS, @Nj
Capitals 86 (4)- MTL, @Tbl, FLA, @Nyr

Sabres 86 (4)- @Tor, TOR, @Phi, @Bos

If we win next 3 and Bos loses next 3, then 4th game is for 2nd place.....I know we need to make playoffs first, but possibility

Every game until the end of the season will be the biggest game of the year. Let's hope we take the season series today.Loving the 2 afternoon starts. Hope Alfie gets to 30g and Baby K gets to 80 points.

These wins could clinch a playoff spot for our Sens !

Just a small correction...It 's the first 10 PER DAY that gets you into the draw.

Wow, what a start to the game. We had few chances but capitalized and that's the difference. That and Anderson has been a monster in the 1st. So happy he's back to his regular form. I'm away right now, cheering on our team and I'm getting alot of strange looks, lol. Guess it would help if I didn't have my headphones in, people may know what I'm so happy about. Too early where I am for a beer, but damn I want one.

Bedore the game started, i was worried the time off would hinder our performance, but i cant complain too much. Keep rolling guys, you can do this. I think the biggest game they have coming is against the NYi, which is strange to say, but based on how they've been going, we'll need to play them balls out.

Go Sens Go!!!

Wow, what a great beer laden afternoon to be a Sens fan. So far so good. I think Philly will come out like a rabid pack of jackhammers in the second, let's hold down the fort, keep our foot on their throats and come away with 2 unbelievable points!

Just watching the CBC intermission show and would like to just say...

It makes me extremely happy to hear so many ex NHLers basically just get baffled by what Karlsson can do on the ice!!!

This has been going on all year when a national broadcaster is showing the game. TSN and CBC guys that don't watch Ottawa on a regular basis are simply amazed at the skill of the kid.

Karlsson now, at this point is up there with Ovechkin, Stamkos and Crosby in terms of 'most entertaining' players in the world. How fricken awesome is it that this kid is on our team?! ... Basically for life!!

Something I've been thinking. Do we have any potential 1st line prospects coming in? There's Silferberg and Zibby as the favorites but can they do it?

The way I see it, if Greening and Michalek can take a turn on the number 1 line, why can't they? From what I've seen and read, Silferburg has the size and shot to boot.

Keep in mind I'm looking more towards next season.

Man oh man what a game by CHRIS PHILLIPS.

I was really keying in on him the whole night and could not find one bad play that he had made. Talk about retribution for costing us the game in OT the last time we were in Philly.

As for the rest of the boys I thought Turris had a real strong game, but couldn't buy a goal. Karlsson on the other hand didn't have his best game, but it seems as though teams are putting a few guys on Karl nowadays (actually not a bad thing). Same for Spez...it seemed everytime he was around the play there would be two flyers jerseys around him.

Anywho, HUGE two points today, and I can honestly say that had Andy not been in nets for us this woulda been a loss.

GO SENS GO!

Alright I guess it has to be done. Listen ZipZapRap, we get that you don't like Michalek. We fully understand so little about the game of hockey that you think 34 goals and 57 points in 72 games is a bad season. In addition to this excellent production Michalek is an excellent penalty killer, he's very good defensively, and he wins a shit-ton of battles for the puck on a regular basis. Package that with the size and speed that he carries and he's truly a very valuable player.

Your main and ignorant criticism of the guy is that he doesn't score important goals. Lets break that down.

10 PP goals
23 ES goals
1 SH goal

Michalek has scored:
5 times to tie the game
12 times to take a 1-goal lead
4 times with the team trailing by 2 goals or more
4/10 times in a shoot-out to help us get wins
4 times with the team leading by a single goal
5 empty net goals most of which clinched a big win for our Ottawa Senators

Michalek has scored:
5 times with the team leading by 2
4 times with the team leading by 3+ goals

So only 9 of his 34 goals came with the team leading by 2 or more.

Oh did I mention he's scored 17 goals in the 3rd period this year? The one where everyone has to find a way to win.

So what does this analysis tell us? It tell us quite definitively that Michalek has scored a ton of "big" or "important" goals for this hockey club and has been a huge factor in it's success. Add that two his high quality of defensive play and he's extremely valuable.

ZipZapRap, you're an ignorant dumb fuck and you should go put on your loser Leafs jersey and crawl back onto whatever golf course you came from. Go fuck yourself, seriously. What kind of loser fan laments a player as hard working and productive as Michalek. Shoot yourself, please.

Good game by the Sens considering it was their 1st game after 4 days off against a very good opponent. They came out flying and had a bad 2nd period. Both teams looked like they just wanted to get to OT or shoootout in the 3rd.

3 games in 4 nights... 4 days off... 3 games in 4 nights. To add to that.. 6 games inter-division against your biggest rival... all when your 2nd game in back to back... 9th or 10th game like that over 2 seasons.. and the schedule is selected by a computer... yeah sure.

@ZipZapRap -- all you do is trash the Sens and you call yourself a fan? To even be where they are is above where anyone expected them to be. If you really don't like it.. then I suggest you jump off the Sens bandwagon and go join Leafs Nation and you and your fellow Leaf fans can wallow in the mediocrity they have been in for 8 yrs.. then you do have something to complain about.

montreal playing budaj to continue their fall and giving caps important points, trying to screw the sens...

on the other hand toronto trying to fail yet buffalo is missing some pieces on defence. can toronto win? highly unlikely.

i can't stand to watch either game.

Already a couple of beers in me, just so I can cheer the Leafs on. A Leafs win in reg. and a Sens win tomorrow means playoffs fellas.

Drink as much as it takes for you to bear the game.

Stefan Neosen has a HATRICK and two apples in the first period against Guelph.

This. Kid. Is. Good.

Also, Big Z's coming over to North America next week. Life is good.

I know it's probably an outside chance of making the Sen roster next season, but I would love to see Neosen make the final cuts in camp and at least play a couple of preseason games like Stone did last year.

Same goes for Prince.

With the way the Sabres were playing I thought they would win out. But a loss to the Pens yesterday.. and down 2 goals against the Leafs going into the 3rd. IF, big IF they lose this game.. they are 4 pts back with 3 games left.

So if the Sens win in regulation or OT tomorrow would give them a 6 pt lead with an ROW of 35 with 3 games left.. Buffalo with ROW of 31 with 3 games left... they could not catch the Sens with the tiebreaker. So Sens could clinch a spot tomorrow. Get it done now guys...

Magic number is 3 (so would need three points or for Buffalo to not get 3 points available) - so technically one more win won't do it but realistically it probably does.

But doesn't Ottawa win the tie-breaker with Buffalo with one more ROW win ?

Even if they win in shootout they r most likely in unless they get pounded all the other games, buff has just 3 games left so for them to tie us in ROW (34) they need to win all 3 in regulation and with us winning none in regulation but there differential is -11 to our +11 so we will still get in.

Yes but technically if we won in a shootout, lost the rest or got two single points then Buffalo would tie us in ROW (if they won out). But we tie for the next tie breaker (head-to-head) and win the next (goal differential). So the magic number is actually 2 (I was mistaken).

He makes 100 mistakes per game and can't keep up with the play. I'm not saying I could do better but I'm sure there's 1000 broadcasters out there that could. His voice is iconic because he's been on HNIC for 100 years.

Yeah Boston is 95% locked into second and we're trending toward 7th for sure with outside shots at 6th or 8th. Boston will be a challenge but I'm okay with playing them if that's how it plays out. The way this team is I almost prefer to play the underdog - if we move up to 6th we might be a favorite over Florida (or Washington). Certainly not a pure underdog. I think the underdog role fits this team better.

Our last game of the year might just be for 6th place though.

We beat Pittsburgh last three times we faced them (yeah I know 3rd string goalie last game).
We beat Philly today and the game before that.
We beat Washington last time out.

It won't be about an offer of "whatever he wants". If the Habs offer a position that he wants we can't just make him GM. But hopefully he'll want to stay here to see the positive results of all his hard work so far.

As for Zibby - putting him in the lineup would smack of desperation (a little) given that the team we're icing today is winning (mostly). However, if burning a year off his deal is deemed to be a good business move in of itself, then go for it.

Perfect scenario for me is that he goes to Bingo to play with Petersson and some other future teammates. Then comes up as a black ace when Bingo's done (and Ottawa's hopefully still playing).

Edge of the seat stuff all through 3rd period until it's clear that each team is so desparate for a point that they are both coasting. Overtime: big push fom Philly because they don't want a shootout. When the shootout comes: Complete peace, nirvana, no worries, in Andy we trust. And he pulls it off.

Our prospects are tearing it up in the CHL playoffs right now, holy crap. Even Darren Kramer has 4 points in 5 games. But Stefan Noesen is the real story. 13 pts in 5 games, wow!

I'm really hoping for a blowout today, and a bit of stat-padding for Karl,Spez, and maybe Alfie can even reach 30 goals. 3 points tonight for Karlsson would mean that he ties an NHL all-time record for most points by a swedish d-man, and 4 would break Lidstrom's record. Would be pretty hard not to give him the Norris if he breaks a record, wouldn't it?

Hoping the game-day thread is up soon CHIRP :D

Goodmorning fellow Sensfans,

If we were to play Boston in a 7 game series do you think we can beat them?

I think personally our guys are going to come out hitting and it won't be an easy series for the bruins at all. I'm even willing to think that with the Bruins recent struggles that we can win in 6 or 7.

Let me know your thoughts

Absolutely we can beat them. If anything, you want to face them in the first round because once they win one series, they will start rolling. Montreal took them to 7 in the first round last year and I think this Sens team matches up better than the Habs do. Anderson needs to be his best but Boston is definitely a winnable series. Two weeks ago I would have said Pittsburgh was the only team I wouldnt want to face but with Fleury struggling, bring them on too. At this point, you're in tough against everyone but I think Ottawa can beat anyone. They will be full of confidence and will have absolutely nothing to lose. That is a dangerous and scary combination.

Hey chirp,

Just got an idea for the website instead of the ignore button. Why don't you make it so that if a comment receives a certain number of thumbs downs (say 5?) then that comment is hidden, and anyone reading the comments has the option to see it if they click "show comment. This is the exact same system that youtube uses, and I think it works perfectly.

Another idea is a notification system where if someone replies to your comment you get an alert and a link to the reply. This will create much more constructive conversations because it would make it a lot easier to look for replies to your comments instead of having to scroll around looking for them.

JMO, What do you guys think...?

Thomas is tired due to Rask's injury and Julien's refusal to play Turco. Add to that, Thomas is coming off a playoff where he played until mid June. Horton is also done for the year and their D have sufferred
some injuries lately including a concussion to McQuaid. We've all heard the term Stanley Cup hangover. We need to come out flying and we definitely have a chance.

I thought they played Turco a few games ago?
But yes I agree that Thomas has played a lot of hockey and hopefully we can catch a tired and over confident Bruins team.
I got my playoff tickets the other day, I am excited!!!

I think this years playoffs is pretty wide open. I can't even really narrow it down to a top 2 in each conference if I had to I would likely say

EAST

NY
Pitts

WEST

ST Louis
Van

But even that I wouldn't be the least bit shocked to see none of those teams in the finals...If we get rolling and Anderson plays really solid who knows what can happen. Fleury/Thomas have looked pretty weak at times lately, and the Rangers who knows.

looking forward to these playoffs no matter how far we go.

Interesting that after the Montreal game last week, Bryan Murray came out and said that the team would take the last 7 games of the season like it was a best of 7 playoff series. Well I guess Murray is a swami because the Sens have a 3-0 series lead and with a 4th win they clinch.

And just for those who like to hate on the Sens no matter what they do, of the last 3 wins, the Sens have won against the back-up goalie. You know what, WHO CARES!!!! Playoffs here we come.

Not exactly hockey related info here boys and girls, but this is amusing.

I think we can all agree that the Ottawa Senators have one of the best prospect pools in hockey. What you may not be familiar with is that they also have the best inventors in hockey.

Hey Chirp,

Can you confirm this lineup change.

Ottawa Sun lineup is always somewhat weird.

But, then again, we never know until you confirm.

Only Dorion would know that Neosen would evolve into this kind of player. Not on anybody else's radar to go in the first round. Guy ends up being one of the best players in the O.

Dorion knows best!

Lets hope the Molson's keep their hands off of Pierre Dorion.. Montreal always bogart our talent.

Mat! What are you doing? Don't give Montreal any ideas like that. We need Dorion like the earth needs the sun!

The cats out of the bag my friend. He has been mentioned a few times this week already. They just talked about him on hot stove... Montreal always poaches our personnel. They can't think for themselves, and they sure as shit can't develop talent. Bryan better nix any permissions to talk to him.

Sens should offer him whatever he wants imho. Drafting is the key to any organization's long-term success, and imho, if we lose Dorion, say good-bye to our amateur scouting success.

Agreed... we lost Brent Flahr to the Wild and Dorion moved up to take his position.. in my opinion has done a great job. Losing him would definitely hurt the Sens in way of drafting. I really think when Bryan Murray retires... Tim Murray takes over with Dorion as his assistant GM. He needs to wait a couple of years... Keep him happy Murray. Don't send him to a division rival.. that would hurt big time.

Projected final standings based on "last 10":

NYR 113
BOS 101
FLO 95
PIT 107
PHI 105
NJD 98
OTT 95
WAS 92

Buffalo 91 (WAS holds the tie-breaker as well).

BTW - Bob Cole: what a moron. "The home team usually gets the choice and they're going to choose to go first I'm sure." Um 'usually'?!?!? And shooting first too? Someone put Cole out to stud please.

Bob Cole is my favourite commentator, i love his voice. You cant expect him to say the right things at the right time. Hes a human being and its pretty tough thinking on your feet. You try. talk for 60 mins and ill bet you i can find mistakes. give the guy a break.

Bob Cole is too much of a homer. He is brutal when it comes to players' name. If you want to listen to the best broadcaster... it's Mike 'Doc' Emrick. Once you listen to him on NBC -- there is not a broadcaster in Canada that even comes close. He shows no favoritism -- he's just great.
