  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Up Next: Devils, Habs and Penguins

Just nine games to go in the regular season.  Here we sit, 73 games into the 2011/2012 campaign and the Ottawa Senators are right in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Their fate is by no means decided though and this last stretch will determine exactly where they fit in the playoff picture. Next up for the Senators, a home game against the sixth place New Jersey Devils.

With both the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets losing on Sunday night, the Sens chances of making the playoffs improved slightly.  There’s more scoreboard watching to do tonight with the Leafs in Boston, the Devils in New York, the Sabres taking on the Lightning and Washington visiting a powerful Detroit team.

The Sens may not play tonight but the right combination of outcomes could mean another step towards a return to the playoffs this spring.

Ottawa practiced this morning and once again had three goalies on the ice.  Craig Anderson is inching towards a return and could be in the line up as soon as Friday in Montreal.  In the meantime, Ben Bishop will get another start against the New Jersey Devils.

Couple players were absent from practice today including Matt Gilroy and Jason Spezza who were both away for personal reasons.  Spezza was attending a funeral while Gilroy was at a wake.

Jesse Winchester skated on the top line in Spezza’s absence but he still isn't ready to return to the line up.  With Matt Gilroy not at practice, Matt Carkner took his spot on a pairing with Chris Phillips.

  • How about the season Filip Kuba has put together? A guy that appeared to be on his last legs with the organization last season, Kuba has been a rock on the Sens blue line.  Playing alongside 21 year old Erik Karlsson, Kuba has been a stabilizing force and allows Karlsson to play a more aggressive game.  Heading into tonight's action, Kuba is tied with Nik Lidstrom for 4th in the NHL at +25.
  • Ottawa Senators first round pick Matt Puempel will finish the season with the Binghamton Senators. Puempel has had injury troubles at times this season but is healthy and will gain some valuable experience from a brief stint in the AHL.  Puempel had 33 points in 30 games with the Peterborough Petes this season.

Yes, Kuba really is doing all the little things right, and is really under the radar this year. Just seems to be there at the right time, right place, and has made a case for us to re-sign him. I'm sure the skills and mentoring he's given to EK65 have been extremely valuable for both Karlsson and the team.
Hope they can re-sign him for maybe a two year; however something tells me that he wont be here next year (contract year, someone will overpay to have him join)...

Puempel! Man I feel like a little school girl it's great! But in a more serious note, some tragic news in the hockey world. It would appear that Butler still has one more year in his contract which means that if Mark Stone were to crack the team next year he would not be able to wear his #16. Very sad.

Yes he could he is on ELC wouldn't mind seeing him get a chance with Turris I think those 2 could work real well together

He is pretty young no rush though I'm surprised he can play in Bingo not being 20 yet

I don't think we need to worry about that. I think he's still a couple of years away.

Kuba will be resigned this summer. Look at the UFA's out there on D. Besides Suter there is not too much else. Keeping Kuba for two more years would help transition past Gonchar and be good for guys like Weiroch and Borocop.

I have been suggesting re-signing Kuba for a number of months and I've been cleaning the eggs and flour off my house and car for about the same time (i do understand the dislike of the idea).

If we don't think we have a chance at the top level defensive UFAs this year the case just keeps getting stronger. I don't believe any of the Bingo guys are ready for a full time role yet. Money (capspace) isn't an issue and I'm sure he would re-sign for considerably less than he is making now.

My biggest argument for the signature however is how much karlsson seems to enjoy being his defensive partner. Why rock that particular boat when the gain isn't that significant.

Karlsson is probably good enough to play alongside anybody but why force him to do so if Kuba is there. I'm not suggesting a five yeard deal or something like that, but if he'll acept (ideally) a 1 yr deal I would be happy with him being around next season.

In a post that mentions a funeral and a wake, you chose to call this "tragic". Poor taste, I say.

Also, I'm unclear what you mean by when you say you are feeling like a little school girl... do you mean that you feel the way a little school girl feels? Which is weird... or do you *want* a little school girl? Which is just creepy...

I think we put too much stock/pressure/ expectation on butler this year from the get go.
He's got a huge picture on the 20th aniversary sens bus next to some of the greatest sens so far, he's played too many games along with condra/daugavin s/smith who should probably all be rotated in and out of the lineup for proper rest.

I believe all the guys are more capable than what they are achieving this year.

I'm so conflicted about the scoreboard watching. I'd really like to see Boston lose to keep the potential of surpassing them alive. However, I'd also really like to see the Leafs be put out of their misery with another loss. Living in the T.O. area, I don't think I can handle listening to another alleged playoff push. Even this morning, the announcers on the Fan590 were comparing the way the Leafs are playing to the Stanley Cup champion Ducks. That's after only two wins.

The idea situation would be Toronto finishing in 9th or 10th, just short of the playoff berth...yet again...that means no lottery pick and no playoffs, so let them win tonight for sure, mind you, I just don't see it..Boston is way too much for Toronto physically, and they have owned the leafs this year, outscoring them like 28 to 10 in the 5 games played.

Thanks for the prospect update chirp.

I sure hope Kuba is not re-signed. I've been saying it all year, and some of the posts today confirm, that he may be playing his way to a new contract with the Sens and I really don't think he deserves it. 1 good year out of 3 is not worthwhile, and aside from his +/- his stats are pretty poor for a 1st pairing offensive dman.

Bring on the new blood and let Cowen get some more playing time!

The only way Kuba is back is on a one-year deal and even then it would be a setback on the rebuild - i.e. it would mean NONE of our young D are ready to crack the NHL next year and we're not going out and getting a young NHL ready guy either (i.e. packaging up some of our forward depth).

+2 #29 PaulMacLeansMustache 2012-03-19 14:03
I'm hoping Kuba doesn't get resigned unless he takes a serious hometown discount. I am willing to bet that he gets a ridiculous deal from someone desperate for defence on the open market. Probably in the 3 year, 4M per neighborhood. Too much for too long.

-3 #30 Kratos83 2012-03-19 15:08
If we have a feeling Kuba is going to go, maybe we can look at trading his negotiating rights for a pick (I know they are usually 3rd round or lower, but its something) or we could really pull the wool over another GM's eyes, trade his negotiating rights, have a contract agreed on in principle, then Kuba can sign it come July 1st when free agency opens...dirty move, but not illegal.

Hey Chirp - do you know if Ottawa has shown interest in Justin Schultz out of Anaheim? A lot of speculation Anaheim will lose this guy as a UFA this summer (not sure how or why but he decided to play his full NCAA time and might be in a similar situation that Bishop/St louis was in with not enough games played) but he is an incredible talent. He's an amazing young puck moving defenseman who could probably replace Kuba immediately and be a force with Karlsson in a few short years.

I find it strange, after Murray said a few weeks ago, that there would be some competition, involving Lehner and Bishop.

Lehner played 4 games in a row, and was better than average
Bishop has played 6 games, and was simply average.

By starting Bishop vs the Devils, it leaves Lehner in Binghamton, and no more competition ??

Starting Anderson in the Montreal game, probably means that Bishop will become the backup. Where does that leave Auld ??
Quote

0 #34 JohnMarc 2012-03-19 16:56
Auld who ?, We don't need a goalie that can't win a match as a backup. Hope that they'll keep Bishop Up to back up Andy, is there a way that we can just waiver off Auld cause well he's basicly useless to this team at the moment.

Puempel is allowed in the AHL for the following reason:

Although he is still a 19 year old North American player from the CHL (rule says player must be 20 years old min) however, Peterborough are eliminated (didnt qualify for playoffs), which makes him eligible to join the AHL under his ELC.

agreed, i think ive posted this before but of what ive seen bishop do this year and what we know about lehner. Bishop is very consistant every night. Lehner might not be as consistant(prob ably due to his incredibly young age for a pro goalie) but he is the "steal games" material.

I think Zibanejad has been playing pretty solid the last few games. He has about 7 points in his last 9 games. Most of his assists during those stretch of games have been primary assists aswell,, so he has been showing off his playmaking skills lately.

Apparently according to Flashscores, he has been playing fourth line minutes these past 2 games. But who knows he probably got promoted today since you said he played pretty well today.

Not concerned at all. As the whole organization keeps saying this is about the process and building a foundation. A little struggle is not a bad thing down the stretch, just as a reminder that every game against every team is important. Coach Mac had a work day today at practice. Supposedly it was a physical, grunt work kind of day. I have a feeling that they will come out flying tomorrow, especially with some of the results that may happen tonight.

Can't say I wasn't cheering for the Leafs before the game tonight, but boy, isn't it just sweeeeeeeeet to see them get absolutely crushed?

the relegation tournament is a 10 game tournament so i guess djurgarden has a minimum 6 games left. and its the top 2 of the 6 team tourny move on to the final game.

as for zibanejad's low minutes, yes in fact he has been playing lots of 4th line minutes (mainly because he is the youngest center on the team)
djurgarden is having a huge mess similar to what we had last year. a pretty good team on paper, but a HUGE coaching problem. their current coach who came in half way through the season is not the greatest. doesnt care that zib was the expected 2C of the team.. just does what he thinks is best for the team.. and obviously he was wrong seeing how djurgarden's season ended.
that being said, dont take zib's 0.5ppg stats too serious since he has been playing real low mins with terrible line mates. but when he does go on hot streaks, he is awarded with a few shifts with the top 6.

@MoeDozer,

Thanks for the update. I'm looking forward to seeing he and Silverberg come over here, see how they look.

the relegation tournament is a 10 game tournament so i guess djurgarden has a minimum 6 games left. and its the top 2 of the 6 team tourny move on to the final game.

as for zibanejad's low minutes, yes in fact he has been playing lots of 4th line minutes (mainly because he is the youngest center on the team)
djurgarden is having a huge mess similar to what we had last year. a pretty good team on paper, but a HUGE coaching problem. their current coach who came in half way through the season is not the greatest. doesnt care that zib was the expected 2C of the team.. just does what he thinks is best for the team.. and obviously he was wrong seeing how djurgarden's season ended.

I dont think that is the case, I watched a few games and Zib was either starting 2C or got promoted ingame.

The coach didnt have a "grudge" or "didnt care for" Zibanejad, he was doing what was best for the team. Zibanejad struggled vs men, its normal, he's 19 and plays more of a grinder role than a scorer.

Give him time to develop, he should stay in the SEL or if he wants to come over to AHL, thats fine but in no way should he be in the NHL as our top 6...yet

Been away from the board a few days, feel like I've missed out on so much, lol.

Looking at the standings, we are only a few points ahead in position. While it's normal to be nervous, the good thing is all the teams we were fighting with are now matches in games played, with exception to Winnipeg, at 72, but are also 2 points back of Washington. So we have the 4 point cushion over 8th place, but we do need to lace them up and grab that 2 points tonight.

Jersey should be prime for the picking after the game against NY last night, so I hope Ottawa comes out hard. Also, Bishop has been pretty solid in net, only 1 regulation lose. He hasn't faced as much rubber as Ottawa normally allows, but he's come up big in many situations. His 2.10 GAA and .915 SV% is ok in my books. Keep riding him and let him gain the experience.

As for Toronto, nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. But in mind, the Toronto - Boston trade has officially been decided a landslide in Boston's favour. That will no longer be debated.

Go Sens Go!!!

I have been coming to this site for awhile, never had to relogin, I don't even know if I'd remember my password. So it's not an issue with the site, it has to be the browser you are using, or maybe you are clearing the cache automatically. But as for comments, I've always used the refresh comments list, it's never been an issue for me.

I use my iPhone all the time to read the site as well, never an issue, it always works great and it also always remembers my password. It would be nice to see Chirp get an app though ;)
