Game Day- Playoff Push Continues at SBP

After impressive wins in Tampa Bay, Florida and Long Island, the Ottawa Senators return home for a crucial game against the tenth place Washington Capitals.

The Sens come into this game with a seven point lead over the Capitals but Washington does have a couple games in hand on Ottawa.  Tonight kicks off a key four agme swing for the Sens who after tonight gear up for a stretch that will see them host the Bruins and Islanders before visiting Boston on Tuesday night.

With the teams behind them faltering, the Sens have a chance to put a little more distance between themselves and the teams that currently chasing down the final couple playoff spots.  And for the more optimistic fan, the Sens sit just two points back of the Bruins with a couple huge head to head match ups on the horizon.  This next four game stretch will determine whether or not the Sens have any chance at chasing down the division leading Bruins.

Meanwhile in Washington, the sputtering Capitals are running out of time to flick the switch and become the team everyone expects them to be.  They are coming off a dreadful loss in Carolina two nights ago and should be a motivated group. Despite their inconsistent play, they still sit just two points back of the Southeast leading Florida Panthers.

Huge game for for the Capitals.

Paul MacLean’s group has scored sixteen times in the last three games and will not mess with a winning combination.  Zenon Konopka and Matt Carkner will watch another game from the press box, while Jim O’Brien and Brian Lee remain in the lineup.  The way those two have played as of late, it’s awfully tough to take them out.

Here is how the Sens will line up tonight.

Michalek-Spezza-Butler
Greening-Turris-Alfie
Daugavins-Smith-Condra
Foligno-O'Brien-Neil

Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar
Cowen-Lee

Craig Anderson gets the start in goal.  I would expect we'll next see Alex Auld on Sunday when the Sens host the Islanders.

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM tonight with all the action available on TSN and RDS.  Believe there are still some tickets left for this one too so scoop ‘em up while you still have a chance.

  • In his media tour yesterday, Murray talked about where Ottawa stands on the trade market’s biggest name- Rick Nash.  Murray made it clear that the Sens love Nash but not at the price Columbus is asking.  From what I have been told, the Sens have at least inquired about Nash but Howson was asking for multiple top flight prospects in return, including Mika Zibanejad.  Just not something Murray is looking to do right now.
  • During his Team 1200 interview, Murray explained that the Sens had talked to the Dallas Stars about Niklas Grossman but the Stars were looking for a prospect in return.  With the improved play of Brian Lee, the need for a defenceman is not as urgent as it once appeared to be.  That said, Murray will continue to monitor the market for an affordable option.

Another huge game for the Sens. The Caps will be motivated, but if we can get another early goal that should take the wind out of their sails.

With two tough games coming up against the Bruins, we could really use the dub.

The team recalled F Keith Aucoin from Hershey (AHL) on Wednesday. - Team Release

Alex Ovechkin was noticeably absent from the Capitals' optional workout Tuesday in Raleigh. Dale Hunter called it a "maintenance day" for the star left wing, but it is possible that Ovechkin may have suffered an injury. Ovechkin was limping after Monday night's loss, during which he skated his second-lowest time on ice this season (15 minutes 43 seconds). - Washington Post

Time for Murray to make a hockey trade. Dustin Brown keeps getting ripped in the media by Sutter and Lombardi. $3 million cap hit for two more years and the guy is gritty and can score. They need someone like Gonchar to get their power play going and we could take Penner back in a salary dump to give them the cap space for a Carter or Nash trade. We may have to throw in Butler or Condra, but it would help both teams.

Brown would be a nice pickup. He is tough as nails and would look good playing on the 2nd line with Alfie and Turris.

Oh well if we are going to get off the snide and finally hammer these bitches, it may as well be with Ovechkin in the lineup!

Besides they would probably burn us and play inspired if Ovie was out. Haha.

continuing on the thread on the previous Chirp blog-post:

I don't think most people here realize that Ottawa changed gears big time when they traded Rundblad for Turris. See before the Turris trade, the focus was on landing another top centreman/winge r in the draft. Noone is talking about that anymore because all of a sudden we don't need one. However, that set us back one top notch defensive prospect in Rundblad. IF that trade doesnt happen, guaranteed Kuba gets traded for a 2nd rounder, and also Ottawa probably makes a big play for a guy like Nash or Carter at the deadline. Then next year Rundblad starts becoming a more regular partner with Karlsson. Along the way, Ottawa probably sports an atrocious record due to obvious growing pains with Rundblad's defensive game. But again, the management saw the risk/reward in Turris and went with it. And here we are, looking safer and safer in 7th spot right now.

Well if LA is in the hunt for Nash maybe Murray can help LA out by taking on players like Brown and Johnson.(?) I don't know what in terms Ottawa send in return, but hell that would make us deadly for the playoffs. (Especially if we face Boston/NY Rangers in the first round)

Okay so here's my extremely ridiculous dream scenario. We win at least 16 of our remaining 21 games, including every game against Boston, finishing with at least 102 pts and we win the division on the backs of Spezza, Karlsson, and Andy. We clean up at the NHL awards show with Spezza winning the Hart, Karlsson the Norris, Andy the Vezina, Mac wins the Jack Adams, and Bryan wins executive of the year.

That's not too far fetched is it? haha

Just an observation here. Anyone else think that Zack Smith might be playing with a quiet injury, perhaps upper-body. Hes been off his game offensively for a while now, and if you remember the fight he had with Martin on Monday, he grabbed a hold and him and didn't throw a single punch the whole time. Not because he was being overpowered by Martin, but you can see in the replay that he has chances to throw punches, but he deliberately holds back from punching….he just clutches the whole time.

Why would he do that…unless he was protecting something...per haps a wrist or shoulder... etc.

Thoughts?

I would love Brown from LA

Even though he is their Captain I could see him being moved since they have Richards and Doughty in the wings to assume that role

Brown is everything we would need, and would be greening 2.0 with skill (sorry Colin, its the truth)

Speaking of Greening, he looked great with Spezza (who wouldn't) but if he isn't with Spezza I really don't buy into this top 6 disguise they are giving him. Doesn't Foligno seem much more of a fit with Alfie/Turris? Or is it just me

Anyways, if Brown is avail thats definately a move Muuray should inquire in, but thats a big if....

So here goes my trade proposal

LA:
Greening
Carkner
3rd Round Pick
Stone

OTT:
Brown
Penner

LA could then use some of their prospects and bernier to go get Nash if they chose

As long as the puck is in the back of the net I don't care. And I certainly don't expect Penner to get much time with the Spezza except on the power play, he's in the deal as a salary dump and can earn his ice time or ride the pine.

Just today they had Jeff Halpern, Dale Talon, Dean Brown(Sens Insider segment)... Him and Lee seem to be pretty solid together and could see this show getting even better if they continue to get solid NHL Interviews...

Maybe this means that the market for Nash and Carter is proving to be smaller than they anticipated, so they are ridding themselves of contracts that are easier to move. Nice irony it would be if its Ottawa 2nd round pick that was involved in the Rundblad trade thats used for them to get Vermette

It is our 2nd rounder and Curtis McIlhenny which means they are about to trade Curtis Sanford somewhere. Could be to LA if they have Bernier coming back in a Nash or Carter deal.

But then they'd have Mason, McIlhenney, and Bernier... that theory doesn't make sense. I can definitely see them trading Garon though. He'd be a great back-up for any team heading into the playoffs.

lol we just killed Garon in TB two games back with 4 pucks through him. Garon left CBJ quite some time ago..i think ever since Mason won the Calder.

one thing interesting is that uptil now all trade deadline deals this season have been overpayments.

One way to describe Ovie - overrated! He has the ability to be the best player in the world, as we've seen before, but there's just something wrong with his head this year. I mean the guy is the highest paid player in the game making 9.5 million a season, and he only had 45 points in 56 games. Are you kidding me?

He's a lowsy captain and has a shitty attitude. He used to be the most electrifying player in the game and now he's just a one dimensional, predictable player with a poor work-ethic. Even his own assistant coach and former teammate Olaf Kolzig has said so himself.

Ovie has a lot of growing up to do. I used to be a huge fan of his, but over the last year and a bit I've just become more and more disappointed with him.

This is the 4th game against the Caps this season. Sens have 0 wins and 3 losses. Wash seems to use Ottawa as a way to get off their 'funk'.

I hope the Sens turn it around tonight. Is Ovey just saying he is maybe not playing to get the Sens to think it will be an easy game?

Be nice to get a win and be 7 pts up on 8th place and the Leafs. Lucky for the Leafs that Wash & Winn keep losing as they still cling to 8th place. A lot of discord on the TSN site this morning on Gustafson...not happy Leaf fans right at the moment...

Hoping Sens win and Boston loses... they would be tied in pts (even though Boston has 4 games in hand). I think they play Friday in Buffalo before coming to SBP... Would be nice for them to come in on a 2 game losing streak.. and Saturday's game would be for 1st in the division.... Is that too much of a dream?

The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded veteran forward Antoine Vermette to the Phoenix Coyotes for a second round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (via Ottawa), a conditional fifth round selection in the 2013 Draft and minor-league goaltender Curtis McElhinney.

The second round pick was acquired by the Coyotes in the Kyle Turris deal. The fifth round pick in 2013 becomes a fourth round selection if the Coyotes win a playoff round this year.

Chirp has never claimed to be a league insider and that certainly is not the focus of this site, at all. More general Sens based reporting and opinions.

That being said he does have some Sens connections and has broken more trades than that dweeb Eklund. Remember that, a little over a year ago?

Are you sure about that? Throwing "insider" fueled wild crazy trade rumors out there on a non-stop basis can apparently be really great for advertising revenue, even if you NEVER break a trade in your life.

I can even help you manufacture the bogus rumors, I love that stuff.

I really think Komisarek would benefit from a change of scenery and has shown outstanding leadership and work ethic in the past, he would look GREAT in a Sens uniform.

Leafs are looking to unload some salary so they can bring Nash + Carter + Bernier into the fold. They also need more depth in goaltending though if they are to make it to the finals this year so for Komisarek, we send them in return Auld and a 2nd.

So the Jackets have finally decided to pull the trigger. I have to admit I'm surprised it's AV who got moved, but if CBJ has a hope in hell of keeping any fans in the stands, they need to take a page from BM's book. Move the contracts that are easy to move, make as much room as you can and snag the picks, while keeping the bigger names on the roster to build around.

I mean, how often does a name like Nash actually hit the trade rumour and then happen to get moved? Remember, he does have a NTC, so he technically doesn't have to go anywhere, regardless of a list of teams or not.

I think it's more of a ploy used by GM's to let teams know that something can be done to get the phones ringing, but what really ends up happening after a bunch of no end deal suggestions are had, is the other GM saying, "what WILL you do?" And that's when they start offering up guys they were waiting to unload.

So many games GM's like to play, it's crazy.

And that comment deserves a thumbs down, why? Every year, we're hammered with trade rumours and every year super star names are thrown around, which get the wheels turning. Don't get me wrong, some high profile guys are moved that surprise us, but that's usually done mid season, or end of season due to UFA status or signing elsewhere, not traded at the deadline. How often do the names of franchise guys under contract actually get moved? Spezza, Iggy, are thrown around every year, add Perry, Getzlaf and even rumblings of Miller to the mix this year. What makes the Nash talk any different?

Kidding of course. Critics will always be there and I have no issue with that. I assure you I am doing the best I can with the resources I have at my disposal. Some excellent sources, some not so good but what I do is try to aggregate that information and create a site useful to Sens fans.

Hahaha nice

Don't get me wrong. I come here for a reason. Clearly Chirp is a very well spoken opinionated person. I do enjoy reading the daily posts as it is more interesting than any of the vague Sens news on TSN or the usual sloppy articles in the papers.

I guess I'm just sick of reading all these rumors for months now coming from a whole bunch of sources who seem to think they know it all but yet every year almost none of the names they list as 'available' get moved.

Not trying to suck up to SC or anything but he did report the Fisher (and Kelly?) trades before TSN. Dude has sources, and he's been consistent when commenting on the direction of the team. He says no big moves, then the Murray presser comes out a few days later.

I've used StubHub many times. Tickets prices can be a real rip-off (they are set by the people selling them) and also StubHub has a per-ticket transaction fee that you should be aware of, I *believe* it is $20 per ticket but I've used a few sites and may have them mixed up so, remember to check that.

Senators-wise I would imagine that you'd be able to find more cost effective option at Kijiji (spelling) and on UsedOttawa.com etc.

changing gears back to the playoff stretch:
rough look at standings shows Boston in 2nd spot with 4 games in hand, with two less losses than ottawa, and 4 more wins. Ottawa is two points back with 4 extra games played. Now Boston and Ottawa play each other 3 more times this season. I think if the sens manage to overpower the bruins the 3 remaining times this season along with some outside help against the bruins plus keep this win streak going, 2nd overall in the east is not that much of an outside possibility.

Boston seems to have hit the bump finally by going 4-6-2 in their last 10. Thomas seems to be distracted- atleast a little. Tuuka has had a few bad games too. They don't look so unbeatable is what I mean to say. I think STL can do Ottawa a huge favor tonight by adding to the Bruin's loss column. Its a back-to-back too for Boston, so I hope Hitchcock remembers the favor we did him by taking the silly loss lol.

in the end i think it is more than possible that Ottawa ends up somewhere between 4th and 7th at the very least. They should be able to catch all of Philly, NJD and Pittsburgh. Although the Pens seem to be getting hot again.

Talking about Philly, what a goaltending trainwreck year in year out from Biron to Boucher to Leighton to Boucher to Emery to Bobrovsky to Bryzgalov to Bobrovsky LOL...craziness .

These are like classifieds, you can find something in your price range (I see many good deals even on 100 level) and find someone in your area or in Kanata selling them and pick them up on the way to the game!

StubHub (I think) is more traditionally used when you buy tickets in advance, and people will email you the electronic ticket or snail mail you the physical ticket. How good are they for last minute? I'm not sure maybe someone else here does.

As for tickets for tonight - try the Sens website. They have a fan exchange deal where STH can unload tickets they can't use - though not sure if it's available so close to game time.

Or there's that pair of sketchy dudes that troll around out front of SBP: "Got tickets? Need tickets? Upgrades?"

disagree....i think the only positive doughty has is a bigger body. but he doesnt have the skating, creativity, skill and that playmaking confidence and vision which Karlsson possesses.

also, doughty now looks like an overpaid bum who held his team at gunpoint during training camp and did not sign a contract until the team gave him his money.

not to mention, Karlsson is a year younger.

My God. Karlsson is one pace for a point per game this season. Those are monster stats. You see, guys like Doughty and Weber although are great, are overrated and grossly overpaid considering their production. Karlsson has 60 in 61 games. That's fuckin sick.

On a sidenote Milan has surpassed his goal totals this season in his entire career with us and San Jose. This is the type of hockey we've been looking from our players since 2009, at least for me anyway. Keep it up boys all I want is to make playoffs. We'll talk about advancing the next round when we cross the bridge.

I don't get why so many people think that being strong defensively means you have to crush guys. Sure people don't want to go near Chara out there but they don't have much better luck scoring going in on Karlsson (at least when Karlsson is engaged). Karlsson is quicker and more skilled than pretty much any D out there. Skill is skill. If he needs to shut a guy down he can do it as well as anyone (minus the physical play somewhat). The reason he doesn't stand out on D is that he's usually thinking of his next pass or rush before he even has the puck but that will get better with time.

He won't win the Norris this year but I bet he's in Vegas and I bet he wins it before he turns 25.

Similar things can be said of Spezza. When he went man-to-man against Sid in the playoffs a while back he was all over #87 so much it looked like Sid changed his number to 19. Did he shut him down completely? No, of course not. Nobody could back then. But he certainly has the SKILL to shut someone down.

Not every athlete finds the perfect balance like Jordan had between using his skills offensively and defensively evenly. Again, Spezza will never win a Selke, but if his "assignment" is to focus on defense he can with the best of them.

The callers on the Team 1200 are now talking about winning the Cup, which is preposterous! Let's cross the bridge when we get there we gotta make the playoffs first. Plus who would rather see Stone, Zibanejad, Puempel, Noesen all hoist the Cup rather than 3rd line grinders like Greening and Condra? Man our team in the next 2 years is gonna be sick. We saw Zibanejad be the hero in the World 18's. We know what the Mark Stone is capable of doing from what he has done in the WHL and also in the World 18's. Puempel and Noesen are going to be great snipers for us in the future and with Spezza, Michalek, Phillips and Turris leading the way how sick will Ottawa be? Can't fuckin wait to see all of them hoisting the Cup. Then we can bank on it!

P.S. The only real concern is how we're going to be able to afford all these guys especially if we win the Cup with all of them. We're going to have to part ways just like Chicago did.

Was at the game.

Foligno while I agree that he seems to have been off as of late registered 3 points tonight so moving along,

Andy was awesome tonight, too bad the boys couldn't give him the shutout he deserved it.

This wasn't an overly good game by the sens, they really let the pedal off and luckily our man in the crease did what was needed for the w.

Regardless we'll take the two points and move on.

Said it the other day but the more I think about it the more it makes sense to add a second award for defense. It seems a bit silly that karlsson is set to run away with the scoring race for dmen and there is no substantiated recognition. Bring on the Bobby Orr award already... Imagine how many goals he'd have if could have potted a few at the beginning of the season...

Lastly, not sure what has happened to Phillips offensive prowess but i'll take it

Was at the game, scored last minute tickets, center line. Ottawa had fewer chances on the shot count, but it didn't appear to be as bad as it looked numbers wise leading into the third. I think we were stuck at 18 for awhile, but the play was pretty consistent back and forth. What really got my attention early was the refs allowing all the extra stick slashing, hooking and pokes. It's a sure sign that playoffs are coming, where the refs start to let more slide, which I don't mind at all, as long as its consistant and fair both ways.

EK rocked it, he is so far ahead of the competion it's crazy. Never been happier to have a Player on the Sens as I am now. Have to give credit to Lee as well. Some impressive plays, hits and decisions wit the puck when needed. He's really using this ice time well and if he keeps It up he'll be a regular in our lineup FiNALLY.

Andy was a show stopper yet again, that glove save will be a TSN highlight of the night. But Alfie looked a little of tonight. A few passes that he normally doesn't mess up, went the other way. He's still getting points, but seemed to be frustrated with himself at times. Great to see others chip in during these times.

Looking forward to Boston this weekend. We've done what we can, now it's time to watch the teams behind us 'laughs' take a beating.

Well, just as I predicted, get 2 early on Vokoun and he folds like a cheap blanket, SWEET!

It doesnt help the Caps that Ovie & Backstrom are injured but thats their problem not ours!

Now to take on the slumping Bear, unless Thomas or Rask steal the show I think the Sens can take advantage of the Bruins current scoring drought.

If Karlsson scores close to 75-80pts I think the NHL doesnt have a choice but name him the Norris winner, my God man, he's on a torrid pace. To justify Weber now he would have to pick up the scoring a bit or lead Nashville to the Cup in order to beat out Karlsson.

Our top 6 in 2007 was pretty solid, much better than it is right now.

Our Bottom 6 is much better right now and I think our D was a tad better in 2007. Anderson is the better goalie.

But yeah cant compare them really, only measuring cup is if this group can get to the Cup, otherwise the 2007 group has the edge.

I agree that on paper the 2007 team is more solid but not by much. The bigger question to me is how does the rest of the conference look. Outside of the Rangers and maybe Philly I don't see any scary teams.

Boston has been slumping, Pitt might get things in order by the playoffs but otherwise they're not terrifying. Nobody wants to win the Southeast. Jersey? Meh.

Honestly if we finish anywhere except 8th or 5th in the conference I like our chances to win at least one round, maybe two. Then who knows? And if we do finish 8th/5th and happen to pull off the upset in round one ....?

@Hax,

I certainly hope you aren't underestimating the Bruins. Every team slumps, even great ones, and they are still a very, very good team (as I'm sure we will see this weekend).

We are arguably playing our best hockey of the year, they are in a slump, and we are facing them twice soon...it's going to be easy to see our chances at going deep in the playoffs pretty soon IMHO.

Last nights game had me cheering and jumping in excitement for the first 2 periods (especially the first...i stood dumbfounded many times). The third period really had me worried though, man did they let go of the gas. If it wasn't for Andy, the results could of really of been different. If we are to do well in the playoffs, this better change, but I'm sure PMac has already drilled them hard for it ;)

Certainly not, but just saying they don't look as "unbeatable" as they did earlier in the year. The next two games will tell us a lot more of course.

Agree with you on last night's game. Outside of short 30-second stretches where we looked brilliant last night, we actually played a very sloppy game. Anderson was the difference IMO and I feel bad that he lost the shutout since it was no fault of his own. I home MacLean is using the extra day off to let the boys know that efforts like that are not acceptable.

If we play that way against Boston we're in trouble. Then again, we would be against NJ, Philly, Pitt or the Rangers as well.

But if this team plays like it's capable of playing I'm ready for just about any 7-game series.

The Bruins are playing back to back games Friday in Buffalo and Saturday in Ottawa Hope the SENS can take advantage of it.

We all knew the Sens had the toughest schedule for the month of January leading to the ASG. Now, with some rests, we can all witness the jump our players are showing the last 4 games. How many breakaway last night?

There is a good chance Ottawa could sneak as high as 4th in the conference. I just don't see Boston losing the division lead with 4 games in hand. They have too much talent and experience

Also, Milan's first goal last nigth will be in the best goal of the year award contest TSN is having. Magical pass from King Karlsson that end up in a magical goal from Milan.

to me Boston is a team looking for motivation right now. they are built like a playoff team and i still believe they can flip the switch at anytime.

same issue they faced at the beginning of the year. I think mentally they are just waiting for the playoffs to start.

in my books, still the scariest team in the east if not the NHL.

NYR are playing great hockey under Torts but i dont see them being balanced in the way the Bruins are. if i had to choose between a first round oponent I'd take the Rangers over the Bruins anytime.

Flyers seem like a bit of wild card as do the Pens.

He has his off nights, but other than Spezza and Karlsson, Anderson has been our most valuable player. I'm so happy we have him locked up for a few more years. It allows us to really take our time with Lehner and hopefully develop a couple other goaltenders as well.

The biggest plus he has for me when comparing him to other sens goalies of recent years is that I'm not worried that any shot at any time is going to go in the net.

Could be the case and they definitely have the horses. But I have seen plenty of teams go to flip the switch late in the season only to find that the switch has moved and they're beaten by a hungrier team.

Again, the next two games will be a good indication. If the Bruins are "for real" they should beat Ottawa both games to lock up the division and 2nd place. If they don't beat us both games then they should be worried.

Agreed. But he's the kind of goalie that gets hot and if he's playing often enough and the team's playing strong in front of him, there's no telling how far he can take them.

We just need to find a way to play Florida in the playoffs and if we can pull off a first round win (which against them I think is not too unrealistic) then I think they have the confidence to give it a good run.

Let's hope the Sabres help tenderize the Bruins for us a bit before our next match. Huge game is an understatement (as will be the rematch next week).

Against the Bruins, I think Ottawa has to play a clean game. Make the least amount of mistakes possible.....ma ke maybe no mistakes at all lol.

Ottawa can burn the bruins with their speed and their detroit style of Puck possession game. One thing Ottawa also will need to do against the bruins is up the physicality. Also, the other key to winning against the bruins is to take out that douche Marchand, i just get the feeling that once that idiot gets going the bruins take on a whole new life.

One thing in Ottawa's favor saturday: last time Boston played Buffalo, it got shellacked 6-0. If Buffalo can do something similar this time, the Bruins will be ripe for the licking. Not to mention, since Ottawa sits dormant till Saturday, the bruin's game in hand gap will have closed down to 3, and with an Ottawa win, that gap would get that much close to becoming insignificant.

Also, sens need to stop tempting fate so much: they are the second most penalized team in the league.

[quote name="The Apostle"]I don't think Anderson is an elite goalie, but he is a very good one. He's certainly stolen enough games for us this year and kept us around in games than we had no right to be in.

The biggest plus he has for me when comparing him to other sens goalies of recent years is that I'm not worried that any shot at any time is going to go in the net.[/q

What is a ELITE goalie?

exactly...
compared to what we have had here in Ottawa, he has been our very best goalie.
If you think about the differences between this team and the one the opened up the previous season the biggest difference would have to be goaltending.
At the beginning of last year it could be argued that a team with Kovalev, Fisher, Kelly was a better lineup than the one that started this year, the defence was pretty consistant on both teams.
With Elliot facing 35-40 shots a game and putting us behind 2-0 after the first period, we we terrible.
But with Anderson still facing 35-40 shots and keeping us in most games, and we are a much better team.
Granted PM has been a big part of playing a better system, I still see many mistakes in our end, yet Anderson keeps us in, and we play with confidence!
so as far as Ottawa is concerned he has been an elite goalie

actually the biggest difference is Paul Maclean and the lack of GP for Matt Carkner. Anderson did get roughly 20ish games before the end of the year and he was already showing then that we got ourselves a real #1 goalie this time. What has really changed is:
the play of Kuba, Gonchar
the more regular play of Brian Lee - this balances the sens d-corps and makes it more mobile
better play from Phillips
Better system of play which allows players to play with confidence and doesnt bury them for their mistakes.

Must be away from my 'puter today so will miss many of your comments but if you wish to have a laugh or two or at least some warm hearted stories you may want to check out the Leafs forums today. You may go away with a smile. I did.
Later.

When things just are looking down, i just go and read the avs fan forum page and it makes me feel better every time.
our boys are making our rebuild better and faster than any other teams rebuild in the league, we are the new bench standard!
Go sens

Again, the next two games will be a good indication. If the Bruins are "for real" they should beat Ottawa both games to lock up the division and 2nd place. If they don't beat us both games then they should be worried.

Hax, I get your trying to be positive but to say the Bruins should be worried if they lose 1 game out of 6 to us?

Come on man, you do know we are 0-3 vs them so far right?

If we win the next 2 vs them then yes, maybe they do acknowledge that they need to be spot on to beat us again.

But until we win 2-3, I dont think they worry much.

@Hq8
re post #232,
I here what you are saying but,
what came first the chicken or the egg?
I say Anderson makes our D look better, but I am sure that it builds their confidence and in turn our D does in fact play better... confidence, it really is a huge part of the game!

not going to lie, i have a really hard time watching the sens play the bruins for the last 2-3 years.

until their cup run last year i hated their suffocating defensive 4 line system. now i somewhat envy them.

i think the key to beating the bruins is "special teams"

bruins are better this year than last with the man advantage and they've got great penalty killers.
Ottawa will need to use their speed to draw penalties and keep themselves out of the box.

oh and don't match phillips up against marchand, he'll eat him alive.
