Game Day- Sens on the Island

After a seemingly endless lull in the schedule, the Ottawa Senators are finally back in action this afternoon when they visit John Tavares and New York Islanders.

The Sens will look to carry over the positive momentum gained from convincing wins in Tampa Bay and Florida during the middle of last week.  Jason Spezza racked up 7 points over a two game span and will look to keep rolling on the Island.

For the Islanders, the reality of another season outside of the playoffs is starting to set in.  They are six points back of the final playoff spot but with so many teams between them and the final eight, it could be tough for them to play their way back into the mix.

With that said, the Isles have picked up six wins in their last ten games and scored an overtime win over the Senators the last time the two teams met.

Meanwhile the Senators remain in the thick of things in the East and finally return to the ice after a long four days of scoreboard watching.  The teams behind them, including the Capitals, Panthers and Leafs are all struggling and are finally starting to close the games in hand gap.  While those teams have been sliding, the Winnipeg Jets have played themselves back into contention with three straight wins.

The Senators practiced yesterday and MacLean indicated he will go with the same line up as the two games in Florida.  That means Konopka and Carkner will remain the healthy scratches and Craig Anderson will start in goal.  Here is how the Sens are expected to line up.

Michalek-Spezza-Butler
Greening-Turris-Alfie
Daugavins-Smith-Condra
Foligno-O'Brien-Neil

Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar
Cowen-Lee

Thanks to the wonderfully mysterious holiday that is Family Day, Sens fans will get to enjoy some afternoon Sens hockey on this holiday Monday.  Puck drop is scheduled for just after 1:00 PM with all the action available on Sportsnet.

Keep an eye on the comment section for a stream.

  • This time of year, fans and media often watch the scouting list in hopes of determining who might be talking deal.  For those interested, the Sens had a scout at last night's Avalanche/Jets game and have had a scout at the last couple Columbus Blue Jackets games.  Take that news with a grain of salt.

Hope the chemistry, within the line combinations, continues
to be working like magic !!

We need to also continue this winning streak of 2 games, to be stretched out for another 7-10 games and solidify our playoff position.

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hopefully the Sens come out flying and continue their recent trend of scoring first. Islanders will be hungry, two games in hand on the sens and 3 more games against each other this year including this one makes up the 10 point differential. Even this game is huge for the Sens!

If we're scouting the Av's, I hope Murray is looking at David Jones. Scored 27 goals last year, soon to be UFA, good size and shouldn't cost much in a trade. He would make a nice pickup to add some size and scoring punch.

Important 2 pts today. We have a real good shot with moving up to 5th/6th with the way the Pens and Flyers have been struggling.

What worries me the most is actually the 7-8th position. I don't follow those South East teams but it looks like anyones game. I'm hoping the Jets push the Leafs out though, just because it'd be real good for their franchise in this first year.

if subban is so good he would have played for the world juniors last year. goalies are our wj teams weakest link. A great offensive team cannot cover up the weakness we have between the pipes...

It would be good to have goaltending depth. However, quality goaltender can be have in later round. I would prefer using a 1st round pick for forward or D.

what if find amusing, is that last year when we were having the liquidation sale, we were all begging to get rid of Kuba and Gonchar, but the reality is that no team would touch two d-men playing their worst hockey and minus 100, with 4 and 11 million owed to them. But as Sens fans we expected other GM's to be ignorant and give us something for them.
Now that they have increased their value, and can actually be used by other intellegent GM's, some people say, no they are too valuable. Well I hate state the obvioius, but GM's in the league are far from stupid, and will only give up value when there is value to be returned. Last year with Kuba and Gonchar there was little to no value, this year they have some value.

So after a very worthwhile, intellegent debate with fellow posters here on Senschirp, including Chirp himeself, (and may I add that it was an informative, and very classy and civil debate ) there was some excellent points on why we should keep them, and legitimate reasons to not trading them.
But depending on what is being offered, we owe it to the future of our team, and our bettering our team, in year one of our rebuild, to seriously listen to the offers, but should not move them only for he sake of moving them, as we were discussing last year

Merek Zdlinky, would be a very interesting offer, but not sure he is type of D we need in the future,

Huge 2 points today boys, here is to hoping Kuba and Gonchar each get two points in a 45-2 win.

Imagine if we didnt have that 7 game winning streak. we couldve been number 1 in our division. oh well. I consider this season a success only if we make the playoffs or we finish dead last so we can get one of those russian players. The worst place to finish are 9-13. you dont make the playoffs and you dont get great players in the draft. That is the reason the maple leafs havent made the playoffs since 2004 and their future is not promising either.

livescorehunter .com or myp2p.pe always have streams, quality isnt always the best but passable if the only option.

For those always checking for streams, if you can afford $20 per month, I can't recommend an NHL Gamecenter account enough. All SEns games on sportsnet are never, ever blocked. In Canada, only CBC or TSN/TSN2 games, and perhaps NBC broadcasts are blocked. and you can watch the games at your own pace and easily check in on other games during commercials. I love it. I don't have cable but I have an HD antenna so only Sens games on TSN (which is as rare as an EK prediction panning out) do I need to seek out a stream.

My guess is Parise and Suter sign with Detriot. Not only does that team have the best reputation but they also have an insane amount of cap space. On top of that Lidstrom will almost definitely be retiring. Furthermore their other superstars are all aging (dastuk, zetteberg, holmstrom)

Yes the team has been good at drafting depth for years now but hasn't been able to add any future top 3 forwards or top 2 D. I believe this will be the offseason they will be searching high and low for those big name players who will be able to take over. Really don't have to look much farther than those two American studs. Hell they could even afford to bring in Webber

To me it looks like both those players have not re-signed with their respective clubs on purpose. Yes their not allowed to speak to other GM's but what they are allowed to do and chances are have already done it is talk amongst themselves. Just seems like a no brainer for them.

This is why I disagree when people say we should wait to sign Parise. Nor do I believe for a second that we have a good chance to sign either of them(as SC/some of you like to think we do). You have to think of the big picture/put yourself in their shoes. They are American UFA. What on earth would be attracting them to sign long-term with Ottawa.

Christ even Detriots private jet would be enough to get me to sign there

on another topic...

If Ovechkin gets suspended one more time i think he'll pick up and go to the KHL, he plays poorly after each suspension and is unmotivated to play well, since he plays on the edge so much when he's on his game.

Missing the Allstar game was a big F-U to the NHL from Alex O and if he cant play the way he plays and gets suspended i think he'll move back to russia and be a hero there.

i wouldnt be to soon to give up on that franchise turning all arround this deadline or off season. if they can move semin. and if they make a big UFA signing of D like suter and evegeny kuznetsov (sp?) will join them and very soon replace semin's stats. then they have a kid named stanislav galiev who might still be 2 years away but he is also a pretty talented russian winger. and lets not forget they can get a top 10 pick from the avs this year and depends on thier season they can even get another from their own pick.

they are in a real good spot to make a quick fix 1-2 year scramble to fix this team, as long as ovechkin stays.

CArkner is likely going to be in the pressbox for the rest of the year. I love CArkner but Sens could get something for him now and he could resign here in the summer as a UFA. What is his value as a solid depth defensemen considered one of the toughest guys in the league? Anyone have any thoughts?

what about sending CArkner to Vancouver for Ryan Parent? two time World Junior player, only 24 years old but has been given up on three times now already (Nashville have twice traded him and VAncouver waived him). Might be worth a shot and the Sens, if Vancouver is desperate enough for toughness, could conceivably get a late round pick in addition to Parent.

I don't know about you guys but I'm extremely conflicted. On one hand I want to see Murray try and deal Kuba and Gonchar for picks/prospects to stay on course with the rebuild. On the other hand holding on to those two guys who both have stanley cup rings could be extremely key in winning a round or two in the playoffs.

When the Sens are on their game I think they can push any team in the league to their limits. I know this team isn't considered a stanley cup contender but anything can happen in the playoffs.

I really hope that Karlsson doesn't get snubbed for the Norris.

When its all said and done, he's probably going to have upwards of a 20 point gap between him and the next highest scoring defenseman. But more importantly, he's NOT a defensive liability anymore. He's managed to use his speed and active stick to shut down some of the best in the league.

As far as I'm concerned, he's the best D-man in the league, but I won't be surprised at all if I see Chara/Weber win the Norris (so original)

I was so caught up in the game itself that I didnt stop to think how big these 2 points are.

Puts a nice little gap between us and the battle for 8th... for now

Caps losing tonight would be HUGE!

An article in the Ottawa Sun today mentioned that Gonchar does not want to leave Ottawa.

Also some commenters on hockeybuzz;

-- One saying that the Sens have scouts at the Marlies game.. they are playing Lake Erie -- who is the farm team for Colorado... help for Bingo maybe?

-- Brodeur will not talk contract with the Devils until they deal with Parise.... Do you think he stays in NJ?
========================
I hope some of the players heard Piere McGuire's comment on TSN after the All-Star game -- that Ottawa was the most underappreciate d city in North America..

Said this before I'll say it now again. Would not get rid of Lee. Guy is going to be a solid D Man for a lot of years. Nothing special, but a solid reliable 4-6 guy. Would not get rid of him.

I think Lee just proved he'd be a good replacement for Kuba on the 1st D pairing. Time for a trade! ;)

Think it's a bit too early to be talking a Turris extension. The guy's played, what, 40, 50 games with us?

I hope he does get extended, but he's got another year.

Let's get Karl inked first.

I have been arguing the Lee sitting since last year.

Plenty of heated discussions with many fine posters on Senschirp, where I thought a trade would be best for the kid, as he was not getting any love in Ottawa

Down the stretch he was one of our best D, and we still sat him. He should have played ahead of Gonchar, Kuba and even Phillips, but he kept working and never once complained

We start the year and once again he is the odd man out, I thought for sure his agent would force their hand, but no, they kept quiet and kept working.

This kid will be in our top 4, he has earned it, can easily replace Kuba, Gonchar.

Lee has sat his last game... I certainly hope!

question...

I know the talk has been Karlsson and the Norris. Which I personally think at this point would be ridiculous if he didn't get it.

But...

Im trying to think of who could win the Vezina and nobody really springs to mind like Thomas did last year. And I'm starting to think Anderson has a chance. Plays on a young team, plays an insane amount of games, most shots against, most saves, and is about to get another shutout.
I just thought of Lundqvist, whose had a great year but he's also on one of the best teams which plays a defensive style game. Anderson must at least be up there

And obviously we have a Coach of the Year candidate as well in Mr Stash

Thoughts?

Calm down boys, remember, this is Ottawa. We get no respect from this league.

Weber = Norris (Karlsson not even nominated)
Tortorella = Adams (Stache will get a nomination)
Malkin = Hart (Spezza gets no nomination)

Sorry, but this is the reality.

What makes the case so strong for Chara and Webber?

Karlsson
points 57
+14
PIM 28
Shots 192
AVG Ice time 25:24
Game winning goals 2

Chara
Points 32
+18
PIM 59
Shots 166
AVG Ice time 25:08
Game winning goals 0

Webber
Points 38

Add in that Chara is on a cup defending team and Karlsson is on a team projected last

That is not true at all. Yes we all want them to go deep in the playoffs and they keep showing everyone lately they may just do that. But our players are some of the best players in the league and they should get the recognition from the league. Karlsson his play his stats and his age and team he is on all scream reason for a norris consideration. spezza has shown nothing but heart and that should reflect in the nominations and the anderson pt someone just mentioned could prove true down the stretch, where he is best.

because of what all the experts saying what they did before the season, i think karlsson for norris, anderson for vezna, mclean for jack adams, spezza for hart seems like a reasonable payback to those experts, maybe next time they'll shut up about ottawa.

Honestly, I The time to trade Kuba is NOW. If Kubina fetches a second and a fourth, Kuba may be worth more. Especially with the emergence of Lee's elevated play why not roll the dice? We gave up a second for Turris, replace the second or flip it for another younger player. Eaton for example?
