Game Day- DIFD Night at SBP

After a disappointing overtime loss at the hands of the New York Islanders last night, the Sens are right back at it against their provincial rivals tonight.

It will be a playoff type atmosphere at Scotiabank Place tonight as two teams in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race meet with a huge two points on the line.  Craig Anderson will start in the Ottawa goal.

The Sens are just three points clear of the Leafs but Toronto has a full three games in hands.  This would be a terrific time for the Sens to snap that five game losing streak to give themselves a little bit of distance from the 8th place Leafs.

Despite last night's loss, Paul MacLean will go with the same group as he did against the Islanders.  That means that Jim O'Brien will play his second straight game in place of the struggling Bobby Butler.

Here is how the Sens are expected to line up

Condra-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Smith-Neil
Daugavins-Konopka-O'Brien

Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
Phillips-Carkner

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM with all the action available on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.

It will be an emotional night at SBP as this is the annual Do It For Daron (DIFD) game.  The event will highlight for fans the issues of youth mental illness, and promote community organizations that offer mental health support services to youth and their families. There will also be fundraising activities throughout the night.

For more information on this terrific cause, check out the DIFD website right here.

They need someone else that can go between the pipes time to time. You can't expect Anderson to be 100% 70+ games a season then be effective in the playoffs if they make it.

sens need to stop dicking around in games starting tonight and get the job done. they know they can get it done, we know they can get it done and the opposition knows they can get it done. put the leafs out tonight and that will be one immediate rival for a playoff spot put into a hole. lose to the leafs and it will be the sens in quite a hole. NJD and Caps both won tonight. Both teams need this win. Some might say leafs need it more, but i disagree, the sens need it even more since they need to stop a downfall, leafs are only looking up.

play a clean gaffe free game and put those laffs to bed.

I think what your noticing is that people are still coming back, they are just being hypnotized by the puck. Two guys are chasing the puck carrier and leaving a guy open. This is all mental right now they just need a win to get some confidence back

agreed, but i think to get to that, they need to stop dicking around. i think the sens are just getting super lazy. they got a great run started with really intense play, then they got lazier but kept winning. but now the laziness has caught up. time to dig in. literally dig in.

Yep, We need a Threat

Karlsson is the closest thing we have to an offensive threat and he is a D man

Next best threat we have is Spezza but he is nothing without a kessel type

The revolving door of bone heads isn't working with Spezza, he made it pretty clear he likes playing with Aflfie and/or with regular consistent line mates

Speed...We lack a lot of it atleast amongst the blue-liners.
The Sens are back on earth, and this how the season was supposed to go. A lot of you naive fans can say "this is just one game...you're not a true sens fan". I'm sorry but that argument is invalid. A true sens fan will be able to recognize that when you are outskilled by teams including teams who are chillin in the basement( NY islanders) on a nightly basis, change is required. This team had a great run which itself was an accomplishment. But now we can recognize our team not only lacks speed but as well as the tools to match with other NHL teams.

I've been trying to voice this opinion for a while. Yes it's sad, but now we're well aware of what we lack which is the first step towards improvement.

Although none of us should be disspointed with this team. Not one bit. We've overachieved enough for a rebuilding team. we already have 2 or 3 excellent players. However at the same time it's time to be realistic considering how much the sport has become about SKILL and SPEED.

DISAGREE. OUTSIDE OF CARKNER, THIS IS THE SAME TEAM THAT BEAT NYR, PHILLY AND SAN JOSE. ARE YOU TELLING ME THOSE TEAM S WERE LACKING SPEED ON THOSE NIGHTS?
its pretty simple:
1. LONG long road trip
2. laziness and lax behavious creeping in
3. some players obviously are not in for the long ride - gonchar
4. dire need of a backup goalie, Paul MacLean has absolutely no faith in Auld, otherwise we would have seen Auld in yesterday. Anderson is burnt out. All goals from a goalie perspective are very weak to be honest with you. This guy is BURNT OUT.

sens forwards are trying, but obviously the second guessing is now rampant among those guys because they dont know what Phillips, Cowen, Gonchar and Carkner are going to pull on them next. if you cant trust your back end, you cant do much on the front.

0 #57 miguel 2012-02-04 21:10
OUCH this does hurt!

Yes we are coming down to reality... Anderson was really the reason we were where we were, without him we would have 10 fewer wins.

The reality is our D is absolutely god awful!

For all the good Philips had done it is being tarnished with his poor excuse of defensive play!

A few years ago we signed an over the hill D-man who was well passed his prime... he did the honourable thing and retired, his name was Jason Smith... Big Rig, please let us remember you like you once were and retire.

Gonchar... please sit his ass down, he does nothing on offence, which is what we signed him for, and is worse than ever on defense!

Finally, we are what we are, a team in transition, that is rebuilding, it was fun talking about who we need for the playoffs and what can help us going in, but even WHEN we do make the playoffs, we will not go far, and we need to let this team evolve as is, to see who stays and helps get their name on the Stanley Cup, and who is not required to help us get there.

To all you real Sens fans, remember the future is ours, to you fakers... yes Hooray for the Laffs who may squeak into the playoffs for the first time in 8 year, only to be laughed out in the first round...

Forever Go Sens Go!!!!!

I agree with you but will even go as far as saying the whole team is burnt out, we played so damn hard the first 40 games and lets be honest here, we overachieved our way to where we are.

It was just a matter of time before our young guys hit the infamous half season wall.

Our vets are invisible, MM9 no goals in 8+, Spezza not doing much...

We cant expect to play 20 solid minutes and keep winning games.

We need a back up or just let Auld play, who cares if we win or lose if your plan is a rebuild.

can't they end it sooner by sending him down....putting him on waivers......whatever they could do.

i mean lets face it, ottawa fell asleep at times this game and it cost them.

What's funny are the line combinations. Condra? O'Brien on the top line, really? What's MaClean smoking? As stated in the past these line combos won't last forever. I just think it would've been a wasted year if we eventually slip out of playoff contention, get a mid round pick and then do what? If this is the year of defensemen, let us draft one then. And instead of 20, our 1st rounders from last year at 19 will join the flock.

ah well...no playoffs, was a good season, but reality HAD to set in. Trade Alfie to a contender and let him retire a Cup winner. If the Sens organization has class they will, if they are greedy, they will keep him.

You know I'm probably gonna get heat for this but really, I think it'll benefit the team in the long run. With the abundance of 1st rounders from last year's draft, I'd be considering moving Michalek. Yeah he's good but not someone who looks like he can last too long. I enjoyed watching him play for 3 years but I just think he won't be the impact player he was sought out to be. I'd gladly take the gamble on Carter. It can't be any worse than having Michalek can it? As stated, there's no hate for Milan. I just think that as good as he is, he'll never be more than a 40 point player. Which is good. If you're on the second line.

Ok SENS fans, relax, They've been in this situation before this season and surprised the shit out of us how they were able to turn it around and get on an insane winning streak. Let's see if they can turn this thing around before panicking. If you think the Sens will be the only team to struggle for the rest of this season, you better wake up.

I believe coach MacClean will find a way. I also think it would be the right time to call up Lehner and ride him a bit to give Anderson some rest.

Go Sens Go

We have too many players that are cold right now, Folino has 2 goals in the last 20 games. This is hurting this team right now. Spezza and Michalek are really cold of late too. No points in this losing streak.

Does someone know when the Elite Swedish league is ending so we can call up Ziby?

Chirp,

we are in need of you help,
We need to take back our SCOTIABANK HOME!

Sens fans cannot go to our home games against the Laffs, b/c the Laffs fans who cannot afford tickets in the Air Canada center, come and to Scotiabank place and like squatters take over our residence.
It is downright embarrassing to have these losers come into Ottawa and run us out of our home.

I refuse to go b/c the last time I went, I brought my children, and would never expose them to that brash of hooliganism ever again.

They are obnoxious, and embarrassing, and even threatening, not to me, but to other good paying Sens fans who were simply cheering on their home team.

I know many Leaf fans, I call friends, that we can share the odd banter and have fun with our teams.

But many of those loser fans that go to Scotiabank place, do not go to enjoy a hockey game, but to antagonize, and promote altercations, as most of these losers could care less about the game, and more about degrading other hockey fans, and in reality do embarrass most real Leaf fans.

Many people I know, now refuse to put themselves or their families in that type of environment, and who can blame them.

We need devise a way that real hockey fans can go back to our home and enjoy the battle of Ontario like real hockey fans, and not to turn the hockey game into chance to be a hooligan, and embarrass yourself or your team.

Lets take back our HOME Chirp,
or find a way to put 18000 Sens fans into the Air Canada Centre!

Shit game tonight but I still say we win Lord Stanley before those Loser Laffs!

Things that need to change:

A) Jared Cowen.

Has struggled mightily the last 5 games or so. Mac NEEDS to do something to settle this kid down. His positioning has been bad, he's turning the puck over, his skating has been sluggish. Let's not be homers here. Cowen has been B.A.D. and needs to be either a scratch, or get back to himself in Bingo.

B) Mark Borowiecki.

Should replace Cowen. He has been good in the game he played, and imo deserves to play and take Cowen's spot.

C) Michalek.

Needs a change of scenery on a different line. Mac needs to send the message to this guy. He's been absolutely invisible.

D) Brian Lee.

Never though I would be saying this, but I can't wait for this guy to come back. Not because he's anything spectacular, because the guys on the ice have been that bad. I'd like him to change up with either Cowen or Carkner. Preferably Cowen.

D) Back up goalie.

Plain and simple, the Sens don't have a backup goalie (who's Alex Auld again?) Andy had been subject to playing game after game and the poor guy must be dog tired. I heard in the Melynk interview with the Fan that Lehner may be called up. Now may be a good time.

E) Powerplay.

Simply put, this powerplay has been the worst I have ever seen in hockey ever. It. Is. Brutal. No creativity, no good chances, nothing good goin for it. Don't know who runs the PP (Cameron, Reeds?) bit whoever is has done an absolute terrible job of it. I know Paulstachio ran the PP unit back in Detroit, why not have him do it? The Sens need to totally rebuild their PP though because it is God awful.

Other than that, tonight was an absolute embarrassment. Especially for someone surrounded by Leaf fans :S

The only good thing right now is that we have just killed any thoughts of being 1 guy away.

Try friggin' being at the game like I was. I hate with a passion to go to those games.. but if I sell or exchange my ticket some Leafs fan will buy it - so I go. It is time to take back our 'Bank' and it would help if these Leaf games here were not on a Saturday so those Leaf fans that come from Toronto will stay the hell home.

At the beginning of the season we all said there would be some good nights and some bad nights. Well fellas welcome to the bad nights.

This team is in a bad funk... and I hope tonight was rock bottom and embarrassing enough for them.

They need to get Cowen away from Gonchar... put him back with Karlsson again... they worked well earlier this season.
Cowen is playing not to make a mistake... I really feel for him.

Bring up Lehner.. stick him in the net and force the defense to actually play defense.

This slump, I hope, will let Murray realize NOT to be a buyer at the deadline. Get some decent D on July 1st... or bring up BoroCop & Gryba... maybe they will actually hit something. No real hard checks on any Leaf player tonight.. they were too easy on them.

Don't worry the Leafs will come back to earth pretty soon. They only played 3 road games in all of January... their opponents get a tougher for them going forward.

Does this mean it's a bad or good season ??

Relax people. We're sellers Bryan Murray, Keep selling. This team is good but doesn't have the stamina yet for 82 games. They look burnt out there. This is where inexperience shows and it's the hump they have to overcome next year.

I just hope to God that Cowen does not play the next game. OR, Paulstachio AT THE VERY LEAST splits up the Gonchar Cowen combo because they have KILLED the Sens the past 6 games. They have been dreadful. Especially Cowen.

Like I said before, I am a fan of JC, but he isn't polished yet. BoroCop has been doing so in the A for the past while. He is a more able puckmover and a better skater. I would love to see him back up and scratch Cowen. Somebody needs to do something to settle the guy down.

I don't know what to do with Milan. Too inconsistent. He should start the game off with the Turris line. It's too obvious him and Spezz haven't been clicking lately.

Don't know what Mac is waiting for really. Make the changes. You have nothing to lose.

BUT I REFUSE TO GIVE UP ON THE TEAM. THEY HAVE COME TOO CLOSE, DONE TOO MUCH, AND HAVE TURNED TOO MANY HEADS. Remember the start of the season when they played exactly how they are right now? Complete 180 turn!

But change has to happen QUICK.

Let's not freak out. You cannot judge a team by its worst just as much as you cannot judge a team by its best. We saw the sens best and now were seeing their worst and personally I think the "real" sens are somewhere in the middle. Just a lot of players struggling right now. My thought is that they're trying to do too much (especially cowen) that they're forcing plays. That leads to a little hesitation, the extra pass and shit like that.

The sens are a fringe playoff team but I'm confident they can turn it around from here and be in the top8 at the end of the season

The team needs to take a breather and play simple hockey again. Not stupid hockey as they've played for the past 6 games. They just look so bored and uninterested like they had the past couple years. This is not the young team that played amazing and exciting hockey to watch less than a month ago.

I fully agree. But how do they do it? Do they keep the status quo and hope it turns around with only 20 some odd games left? Or do they roll the dice and make some changes?

Imo, the Sens have nothing to lose by switching things up.

a. Cowen needs to settle down [probably too late and drastic to send him down to the AHL, maybe a one game scratch would calm the guy down in the PB].

b. Andy, for goodness sakes [I really do feel for the poor guy because he is the reason we are where we are in the first place], NEEDS A BREAK. Playin too damn much, and seein too many pucks go past him. Most of which are NOT fault.

c. Lehner could [should] be called up.

d. Gonchar needs a good talking to. Hire a Russian translator if you have to.

e. Milan needs a role change.

f. I'm sorry, but Konopka needs to sit.

g. Powerplay needs a complete 360 degree facelift. The worst I have ever seen. They need different personnel, different strategy And Cowen is NOT a natural powerplay defenceman on the point. don't know why in hell he's out there on the PP every time I see him I SMDH.

h. Big Rig could use a couple of energy drinks before games. The guy's feet are so sluggish as if he has an anvil attached to his skates.

@jasonontheolds enschirp this team definitely has its flaws, almost at every position in one way or another. But they are pretty damn good when they play within their limitations. By that I mean the defense should be chipping the puck off the glass instead of these fancy passes. As far as how to get the team back on track is anyone's guess really. If I were coach Maclean I would simply talk to them and let them know that what they have to do isn't really that difficult. For forwards just go to the net and defense just make the simple play. That and I would remind every player of their role of this team. I think they've all gotten away from that...

plain and simple, as i said during the game and before it too . SENS NEED TO STOP FUCKING AROUND AND DICKING AROUND LIKE SLUGGISH FUCKERS DURING THE GAME. PLAY THE STRAIGHT GAME THAT THEY WERE PLAYING UNTIL 60:00 IN SAN JOSE. GET BACK TO THAT. and ALL SHALL BE NORMAL. END OF STORY. HELL JUST TWO GAMES AGO THEY WERE DOING THAT IN BOSTON. SO IF THEY CAN GET 3 PAST THOMAS AND LOSE TO A FLUKE GOAL, DOES THAT MEAN REIMER > THOMAS. OBVIOUSLY FUCKING NOT. SO PLAIN AND SIMPLE. STOP FUCKING AROUND. GET IT DONE. THEY KNOW THEY CAN GET IT DONE, EVERYONE KNOWS NOW THEY CAN GET IT DONE, AND THE OPPOSITION KNOWS THEY CAN GET IT DONE.

on a less caps-lock note: Ron fucking wilson...good on him to take in the sens game last night. he realized that the sens are probably going to dick around in their own zone and he probably also realized that carkner is the slowest fuck of a defenseman in the league, well, simple cure: put the fastest and most lethal guy on the leafs against carkner.

Probably the best solution, I guess.

This stretch is very reminiscent of the starting 6 games at the beginning of the season. At that point, I remember the players having a players only closed door meeting, and from then on... Well we all know what happened!

That needs to happen again. Alfie has to rally his boys.

You're right. The team IS capable of playing good hockey. Just a couple of nights ago they were skating circles around Boston. Before that, they dummied the Sharks in their own barn.

Maybe the change just has to come from within.

Can't freakin wait till Tuesday. And Thursday, when the man who's responsible for me being a Sens fan comes back, Mike!

Hey Sandy Thanks for taking one for the team... It is not easy being at those games live... trust me it will all that much more sweeter when we can walk down Young St with our Stanley Cup Sens Sweaters!...BOO K IT!

How many of you realize that next Thursday at the Nashville game.. Phillips plays in his 1,000th game...

Although I really am happy for Big Rig... I cannot help but say it is about 82 games too much in Ottawa for my liking... Retire soon so we can remember the good days... sorry but I could not resist

Tough to see this as a response to a 5 game skid.

I wouldn't worry too much about Cowen. He's a rookie and D is the hardest NHL position to learn/adapt to/become comfortable with.

Even if we make the playoffs, that would likely mean keeping Gonchar and Kuba. Not getting a return for players who had zero or negative trade value a year ago sucks ass. It also sucks to not maximize value getting rid of old players (excluding Alfie) that aren't part of the future plan.

Pretty much I think this slide spells the end for the playoffs. I realize there is tons of hockey left, but Ottawa essentially is in 9th and around 3-4 points back given the games in hand everyone has.

Im not sure what is in the water here, but Ottawa is playing hockey like the old days and look terrible.

It was the easiest 49 saves Reimer ever had. A peewee goalie would make all those saves from the perimeter. This team gets limited chances in prime scoring areas and teams are just keeping them to the outside far too easily. The Defense is beyond terrible positionally. Carkner and Cowen need to watch some film, Phillips too.

They have to get it out of there head that they are a '3rd period team'. All those come backs were exciting but went to there head because they have no jump for the first half of the game it seems.

Pretty much they have to play crazy hockey from here on out to have a shot, and hope for some slumps from the teams with games in hand.

It doesn't look good and it looks like the clock may have struck midnight for there 'hot run'....

I still think were going to be ok. TheStache has done a great job of teaching these boys how to play good hockey.

Now he just has to teach them how to play playoff hockey. The Leafs played a great "playoff" styled game, tight d, opportune power play and quick counter attacks.

And we didn't know how to beat it.

Wake up. The Sens are in rebuild mode. Not to say they wont make the playoffs. They will. This beating was the best thing that could have happened to them. The All Star game inflated their egos. Its time to take a chill pill and get back to MacLeans ways and play as a team. Trade Kuba and Gonchar on the deadline for 2 young d. MONEY BALL BABY. Lets get to the playoffs and go from there. LETS DO IT FOR ALFY BABY. This game was obviously a write off we had 49 shots. Lets put more on the net next time.

I didn't get to see the game but by the look of these comments I'm glad I didn't lol. I hope they turn this downfall around so I don't go to another blowout game on the 22nd against the Capitals.

The best prt here is that Everyone is starting to realize that we need to get rid of some crap on this team....hopeful ly Murray does too and says au revoir to these guys in the offseason rather than add some spare parts that more or less won't get us anywhere during these playoffs....we should be concentrating on next year!

Agreed,
Time to move any of Kuba, Gonchar, Philips, who will not be here when we are really in contention,
Lets finally see what Borowiecki, Gyrba, Weicoch can bring.

On another note, I was really bothered last night by the fact that we had all the muscle in the game yesterday, and did nothing with it. In years past if we were up by 5 goals to the Laffs, the Orr's Phaneufs's, and many past Laff meatheads would be throwing their weight on some of our more talented players.
It was 5-0 I would have really enjoyed giving them a couple more if we could pummel a few of those annoying Laffs... just sayin!

With the sens struggling lately, interesting what murray will do come trade deadline.

If we keep loosing hopefully Murray finds a new home for Carkner
Kuba
Konopka
Maybe Winchester or Butler.

could be an interesting month in sens nation

Something needs to be done. I really hope they make a move before the Capitals game so I can see some new freshness on the ice.

Time to trade:

Spezza and Michalek (we will never in with these guys)

for

Nash and Brassard

I think everyone needs to relax. 6 games ago you all were planning the parade. After the last losing streak the Sens went 20-7-5. There are 27 games left in the season. The Sens still have a good shot at making the playoffs, they just need to battle through this adversity. If someone told you at the start of the season they'd be in this spot at this point in the season everyone here wouldve taken it in a heartbeat. RELAX.

One play in the early game would have changed everything up. Cowen had Kessel lined up with his head down slicing down the middle of the ice, and should have knocked him out, but he backed off at the last second to avoid a head shot.

I feel like if Cowen would have knocked out Kessel, or at least smoked him, it would have pumped up the team and got us going nice and early.
