Game Day- Sens in Beantown

After the magic of All Star Weekend, it’s time for the Ottawa Senators to get back to business.

First up, a rematch of Team Alfredsson vs. Team Chara.  Only difference is this time the stakes are a little bit higher.  The Senators are in Boston tonight to take on the division leading Boston Bruins in a game that features the top two teams in the Northeast Division.

The Sens come into this one with memories of a pre All Star slide still fresh in their minds.  Ottawa closed out a grueling West Coast road trip with losses in Anaheim, Los Angeles and Phoenix and will be looking to get back on track in Beantown.

Meanwhile, the Bruins should also be hungry after dropping their last game before the break, a 5-3 loss at the hands of the Washington Capitals.  The Bruins hold a four point lead over the Sens coming into tonight but have played five fewer games.

Picking up right where he left off before the break, Craig Anderson will get another start in the Ottawa goal. Brian Lee is still nursing a lower-body injury and will not play tonight. Here is how the Sens are expected to line up.

Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-Turris-Alfredsson
Condra-Smith-Butler
Daugavins-Konopka-Neil

Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
Phillips-Carkner

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM with all the action available on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

  • Yesterday, the club announced that forward Peter Regin has undergone successful shoulder surgery and will be out for 4-6 months.  Just a brutal season for Regin who is a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
  • More bad news for Nikita Filatov as this morning we learned that he has been demoted to the MHL, which is basically the Junior leagues of the KHL.  Incredible to watch how fast Filatov has fallen this season.  From the Sens top line to start the year all the way to Russian minor leagues.

Going ot be a good game against the Bruins. Let's hope the boys can solve Thomas and get a much needed win. We have a tough week ahead with the Islanders and Leafs this weekend. I hope we start it off right with a W!

I already have tickets for that game unfortunately. But $60 is a lot for a bronze game?

Believe $60 is the face value of the ticket. Get the perk of dinner before and a ride to and from. Plus we'll have some prizes to give away at the event. Obviously going to all depend on the level of interest from readers.

Figured it was worth a shot!

I'm really glad to see foligno back on the second line where (IMHO) he belongs (with turris and alfie).

Andersson seems like the kind of goalie that thrives under pressure, hopefully the 9 day break hasn't cooled him down too much.

Let's shellshock thomas right out of nets tonight and end this skid!!!

I really think Regin's day's as a Senator are over...really too bad because he looked to have a promising future as a top 6 forward for us.

Wow Filatov demoted to the Russian minor leagues? I wasen't expecting that one. Really high expectations when this kid was first drafted and they just continue to be lowered...

Glad that MacLean switched the lines, back to what worked
so good for about 15 games.

Hope we play hard for the whole 60 minutes, and come up
winning 3-2, to get back on another winning streak.

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so happy the puck is about to drop for real again tonight, I feel like we've been waiting weeks!

This is it boys and girls, these are the games that will define our season and hopefully hone us like a steely blade heading into the playoffs.

Let's see what our surprising Sens are really made of! Bring it to the B's tonight like a pack of rabid wolves boys!

Great to get back to games that matter. Should be another tough test tonight, but I think the non-All Star players will be excited to get going again. Expecting a big night from Foligno, Smith and Turris. Let's get a winning streak started and show these Bruins we're gunning for their division lead in this 2nd half!

GO SENS GO!!!

As if O'Rourke is reffing tonights game. What a joke

Anyways, no expectations tonight asides from a comfortable Bruins win. Even after the lockout when they sucked they did well against us.

All in all, a loss tonight means we won 5 of 9 on the road trip and we'd all have taken that before hand.

Did "Andersson" apply for swedish citizenship during the All-star break?

Sorry...couldn't resist.

Also, it's been 7 days since we played Phoenix (last game), not a 9-day break. I actually have hopes that Bruins come out firing blanks in this game. Last time they had a long break they started the season hung over....maybe we can get luckey again.

All jokes aside..I except both these teams to start slow, its only natural after a long break. Hopefully its the Sens who find their legs before Boston does. Lets not forget, 2 very powerfull 3rd period teams so far this season.

I wish for a Sens win... but realistically they have a hard time with the Bruins.

Anderson would have to have an outstanding game.. and the Sens would have to come out hard from the opening whistle. I can't understand why this team, with all of it's young legs has such a slow start to a game. Puts too much pressure on the D and the goaltending. If they come out hard and get a goal early... then maybe we would actually see a 60 minute game from them tonight. There has not been many of them this season.

As for Filatov.. he has all of the skills but his attitude has to change. He needs to actually work and dedicate himself to be the best player he can be. Maybe he needs a year or two under Kleinendorst to get that... But it appears he wants to rest on his laurels instead of working hard for what he wants. Until then... he will remain in the minors...

I hope for a win but all star hangovers or weekend whiplash could slow us down.

Anyone else think Alfie would want to go to Vancouver if he wanted to switch teams for the cup, seemed kind of high on the sedan twins.

I want to see him stay, just thought he was drooling a bit over playing with them.

You are not going to believe this one... got this little tidbit on GM Hockey....

"Dan O'Rourke, who called Karlsson a "diver" in Anaheim, is one of the refs for tonight's #Sens-#Bruins game. (from Panzeri)"

-------------------------------------------

So tell me how the Sens are going to get a fair game from this guy. Why would the league let him ref another of the Sens games when he has a bias against one of the best players the Sens have?

It's just like a computer when doing about 2,500 games for the NHL schedule.. picks a division rivalry -- with one team playing all 6 games in a back-to-back situation. That is very highly unlikely. I bet in no other division does that happen.

Absolutely, despite being one of those dastardly dirty bastard Flyers, how can you now love Hartnell after the past weekend?

That being said, I obviously don't know him personally but I think he almost jokes around TOO MUCH so while you gotta love that, I'm not necessarily sad he isn't in a Sens uniform if you know what I mean....

SUCK IT PHANEUF! is a great suggestion, and would be a no-brainer way to get on TV...

That's how the Sens are going to score against the Bruins. They're just too damn good defensively. The LEAST amount of time the Sens have the puck on their sticks, and the quicker the decisions they make like they just did right there is how they're gonna score goals.

I don't think it was an even period, but despite some flat footedness on the defensive side, the Sens managed to stay in it which is what's important.

You're playing the Bruins in their own barn. It's not gonna be an easy game, but they've done a decent job so far.

Those two fights were crucial.

That was probably the best sequence of hockey I've seen the Sens play all year. Seriously. It was a complete second period.

The puck wasn't on their sticks for long which was the problem in the first. They were making quicker decisions, their passes were crisp, they were first on the puck, they were taking shots, moving the puck side to side, anticipating defensively... Wow. They just looked so hungry and motivated.

Alfie looks like an 18 year old kid out there.

It'll be interesting to see Maclean's plan going into the third.

Karlsson got in the way doing his job.

Again Chris Phillips was a dud. What was he thinking on the gametying goal. He's got a tackle Marchand.

Ref's were BRUTAL! soo many times were Bruins players holding senators sticks or interfering with open ice players. I hope the Sens put a formal complaint about these refs, especially o'Rorke or whatever the fuck his name is. A ref can't call out a player for diving, it shows bias against that player.

One period doesn't it against the B's and O'Rourque. They played a crappy 3rd and Anderson was unlucky on the last one. Coach is starting to feel the effect of coaching in Ottawa and having to suffer bad reffing every game. I guess it's not sexy for the league to have Ottawa in the playoffs. They will manage to get us out and let the Leafs in.

second time this season sens go into boston and take a lead into the third and still come out on the wrong end.

btw...what a fuck up by the officials, sens should have won this game 3-2 if not for those idiots. i think the best strategy for the sens next time is to just blow the PK faceoff. just let the official drop the puck dont even bother taking the faceoff.
Quote

0 #122 hq8 2012-01-31 21:41
btw good on spezza to flat out cross check boychuk in front of the official. enough is enough.

on a more positive note, the leagues attempt to get the laffs in by screwing the sens over seems to be not properly aligned with the laffs themselves..... they just let the penguins back in the game.

This reffing is getting way out of hand. I'm fucking serious, murray really needs to complain to the league about this. How the fuck did the bruins go through a game without any penalty calls against?? Unbelievable. If this doesn't stop I wouldn't be surprised to see PM start putting out the goon squad to go after the refs like he did with Evander Kane. I'm really starting to think about putting together a highlight reel of the refs screwing us over this season...I know it won't be too difficult with a large array of bull fucking shit calls that the refs have called against ottawa.

+2 #126 C 2012-01-31 21:43
Sens found a way to lose that one. the last 2 goals should not have been goals, Anderson should have made the save on the game winner, and he should have held on on the tying goal, or a defenceman should have cleared it. Karlsson needs to stop moving out of the way when pucks come his way.

On a completely un-related to this loss note, the reffing in this league has been ridiculous this year.

The SENS have to be much better in their zone if they want to make it. This is the last stretch of the season and every game will be hard fought.

Alfie and Turris were our best players tonight. Milan was a no show in my opinion. We need to have our 2 top lines producing.

Still think something is not 'fishy' in this league regarding the Sens?

After that embarrassing game by the ref in LA... why in the hell was he even allowed to ref a game for the Sens so soon after?

That was 3 blatant calls he missed. IF the league tolerates this... then there is something wrong.

And this crap about -- well it all evens out in the end.. is just bullshit.

I'm not gonna blame the refs for the loss but the reffing is getting kinda of suspicious. To not get at least one powerplay against the Bruins who are the most penalized team per game is rather odd if you ask me... Especially considering how the last three games went down before the allstar break.
Quote

0 #131 Muckalt 2012-01-31 21:50
I know the reffing was poor, but the ref didn't score from beyond centre ice. If they end up on the outside looking in, they will look back at those two points.

Didn't really see anything blatantly wrong from the Sens in this one. As a team they played very well. But Phillips has to do better. Maybe Andy could have held on to that puck though. And that last one... please. Should definitely have saved that. That deflated the team.

The team's performance aside, The Bruins are incapable of playing 60 minutes of penalty free hockey, Lucic alone is good for a borderline match penalty per night, tonight being no exception.
How many different refs does the NHL have, and why do the Sens keep getting the same couple of clowns who clearly have an issue with our players/coach whatever? Too much more of this and a mediocre 9th or 10th place finish will be handed to us!

I agree with that. But the Sens can't control the refs. It's one of those things that sucks, but that they can't really do anything about.

What they COULD have done, however, was NOT let Marchand walk in and score, and get scored on by 100 feet out.

I GUARANTEE you that if those two hadn't gone in, we would have won.

There are always things the team won't be able to control. But there are even more things that they can. Tonight, there was more opportunity for us to win than lose. The Sens just didn't take advantage and Andy was brutal on that last one.

For me, getting scored on 100 feet away merits more complaints than the refs.

Anyways I believe in this team.

Home stretch coming up, all of which are winnable games.

Here's hoping we can start winning again. TBH, I'd rather finish somewhere around 6th anyways and either play Florida/Washing ton; than Philly.

Tonight did suck though. These are the games you look back 2 months from now and say "should have really had that one".

Sens bounnced back from a horrible start to season. Won't put it past them to do it again.

umm duh! :P

Anyways...sens played good enough to win..kept up with the best team in the league...lost cause of an unlucky bounce..its not like it was a pistburg floater..it was a hard shot which skipped..unluck y bounce..

Fact is.. we kept up with the best team in the league....made them look weak in the second period..had some pretty dang solid chances against thomas inspite of not getting any calls...Bruins needed two PPs to beat us..

Not mad about the loss...showed we can keep up with the best..now we just need to pound every one else till our next boston game...:)
