  • Spezza Ready to Return

(UPDATE 2:21 PM)- Paul MacLean has confirmed what has been speculated the last couple days- Jason Spezza is ready to return to the Ottawa Senators line up.  The Sens number one centre has been out of the line up since January 27.  A huge boost for this team as they return to Scotiabank Place for Game 3.

30 Games- Breaking Down the Stretch Drive

52 games down for the Ottawa Senators. 30 to go.

As the Ottawa Senators get set to host the rest of the league at this weekend's All Star Game, fans have already started to look at and talk about the stretch drive that awaits this team after the fun and festivities this weekend.

Looking at the schedule at the start of the season, it was clear that January was going to be a month that tested this young hockey club.  Despite a three game slide heading into the break, the Sens were able to rise to the challenge, posting an impressive 8-4-2 record and giving themselves a shot at a playoff position this spring.

30 games to go. That's all that remains in the schedule of the surprising Ottawa Senators.

The post All Star agenda starts with a daunting road challenge in the form of the division leading Boston Bruins.   After that, the Sens will play a stretch of five straight at SBP, including three against non-playoff teams (TOR, NYI, EDM).  With the teams behind them having played fewer games, points will be crucial during that home stretch.

Here are a few things to watch for over the final 30 games.

  • The Sens will play 15 games against playoff teams, 15 against teams currently outside of the playoff picture.
  • 17 of 30 games will be played at Scotiabank Place.
  • 26 games against the East, just four against Western Conference teams.
  • Ottawa will play on back to back nights five times.
  • The Senators play four more games against the division leading Boston Bruins and four against the New York Islanders.
  • The Sens play three games against the Canadiens and two against the Leafs, Panthers, Lightning and Devils.
  • That leaves one game each against the Blues, Predators, Oilers, Capitals, Blackhawks, Rangers, Sabres, Penguins, Jets, Flyers and Hurricanes.

A few things in there to think about. Incredible that the Sens play 11 of the remaining 30 games against the Bruins, Islanders and Canadiens. After a road-heavy January, the Sens will have the benefit of playing the majority of their remaining games at SBP.

All Star Festivities start tomorrow with a preview of the Fantasy Draft set for tomorrow night at the Casino Lac Lemay. Until then!

I think we will need to win 17 of the games to be in the playoffs comfortably.. let's start against the Bruins!

Not feeling the games against the Bruins. Since the lockout they've owned us (even when they were shit)

It's in our hands. I really hope we finish 6th because 5th means a date with Philly and 7th or 8th means the Rangers or Bruins. Yikes.

I hope the boys send a message Tuesday night from a physical perspective. If we're going to play with the big boys, let's show them we can play their game. We need Neil, Carkner, Smith, Konopka and Greening to show the Bruins that we will not be pushed around. I hope Smith fucks Frankenstein Horton up again, Carkner ko's Thornton, Neil speed bags Lucic, and Greening takes a full speed run at Chara in to the boards. I don't even care if we spend the whole night in the box. With four games left against the Bruins, we need to bring it. Oh, I forgot, Foligno is going to run that commie pinko Thomas right through his net and in to the first fucking row! Bring on the Bruins!

Chirp,

Sending this comment all the way from the small town of Fort Macleod in Southern Alberta. Definitely excited for the Allstar festivities. Ottawa couldn't have gotten the chance to host this event in a better year than when our team is in a "rebuilding" stage yet we are one of the top teams in the East and one of the biggest surprises in the league.

I love reading the articles on this site and look forward to your updates from all the exciting events going on this weekend. I wish I was there to enjoy them.

Chirp, don't forget about all of the Sens fans in the west. Especially when you do your contests!

Keep up the amazing work Chirp.

According to sportsclubstats .com, you are bang on in your assessment of winning 17 games of 30 to solidify a spot in the playoffs, that would give the team 97 pts, which usually 92 to 94 is enough to get in the east (not so much the west) having a larger share of home games will help, so am hoping this team can string together a few W's and then see where the chips fall, playoffs is a bonus for us this year, and who cares who we play? That won't change how the Stache will prepare his troops to do battle, we may be outskilled, but won't be outworked a whole series.

I'm actually more excited to watch the All-Star draft tonight than I am to watch the actual game. Team Alfie is going to be easy to predict I think. Alfie and Lundqvist will take Karlsson first, and then I wouldn't be surprised if they take Gaborik next to keep the Rangers players together. We know Chara won't draft a Sedin so both of them are automatically on team Alfie, hopefully he takes them with his last two picks lol

I think Alfie goes all three Senators right off the bat. Gotta keep the home town fans happy!

Unless Chara wants to rock the boat and nab Spezz...could see him doing that lol...am thinking Alfie takes Giroux too...loads of skill...local boy.

Going to the casino to watch the draft tonight! I hope it was well worth the money!

I dont know why some reporters have Alfie selecting anyone BUT Karlsson in the 1st round...Unless Chara goes first and picks him I doubt it he will go Thomas or Seguin.

My first 5 picks

Team Alfie/Lundqvist
1. Karlsson
3. Spezza
5. Michalek
7. Gaborik
9. Elliott

Team Chara/Lupul
2. Thomas
4. Seguin
6. Kessel
8. Datsyuk
10. Weber

Not sure why 17 wins is the number everyone comes up with, I think even at 15 (.500 hockey) we get in, assuming of course we manage a few points from OT or shootout losses.

either way, Sens are very well positioned to make it to the playoffs.

GO Sens!

Has anyone checked out the most recent prospect update from this past Monday??

Pageau - 29 gp, 29g, 23a, 52 pts..... wow, why the hell did Gatineau trade him and what did they get in return for this dominant player?

a lot of picks according to the trade deadline news

In another major deal, the Gatineau Olympiques sent right-winger Jean-Gabriel Pageau to Chicoutimi for a 1st round pick in 2013 (acquired by Blainville-Bois briand) and 1st and 2nd round choices in 2014. Pageau has scored on average 1 goal per game this season (23 goals in 23 games) and has a total of 39 points

Those Q guys though, its hard to tell if they will blossom into the scoring prowess at the nhl level like they do at the Q level...not every player is Crosby or Lecavalier

This is one of the most amusing posts I've read in a long time. Great job. "Fucks Frankenstein Horton" FTW!

Haha.

I think Chara takes his buddy Hossa pretty early. I really hope Alfie takes Datsyuk with his second pick though.
