The Sens certainly didn't have their A-game last night but still managed to come away with a huge two points. Ottawa has picked up at least a point in nine straight games and now sit tied with the fourth place Philadelphia Flyers.
With last night's goal, Jason Spezza now has 47 points through 46 games, good enough for 6th in league scoring. Not far behind him is the red hot Erik Karlsson who has racked up 44 points and is a +6.
Certainly playing his way into the Norris trophy conversation over this recent stretch.
Can't say enough good things about the play of Craig Anderson the last little while. He would be the first admit he wasn't playing his best hockey earlier in the year but he has really taken it to another level in 2012. He was amazing on Thursday in New York and was at his best again last night.
If not for Anderson, the Sens could have been in a big hole after forty minutes.
Should be interesting to see how MacLean handles his goalies this week. At some point Anderson is going to need a little bit of rest and with a back to back early this week, I think we could see Alex Auld get a start.
Games in hand are obviously an issue but Paul MacLean's group is now just a single point behind the division leading Bruins.
The Sens have a full day off today but are back in action tomorrow night when they host the Winnipeg Jets. They then hit the road for six straight to close out the month of January.
karlsson:
2nd in league in assists, tied for 2nd in league in powerplay points, 1st in league for points by a defenseman
spezza:
tied for 6th in the league in points, future captain material
michalek:
tied for 3rd in the league in goals
anderson:
tied for a second in the league in wins
1st overall what?
Nail who?
GO SENS GOOO !!!!
I agree with all those points but would also add the very impressive play of Colin Greening. I will admit I was a bit surprised to see a one way contract come his way this off season, but he has responded with great play and has never looked out of place in the top six.
He's been brilliant. But in the same breadth he gets 0 puck support. The Sens are brutal defensively, AND on the man advantage when it seems like there's a power play for the other team.
I like how Andy's been playing, but he's been under fire. The guys have to do better defensively other wise the pucks are going to go in on our own net more.
With the team winning I assume trade talks have died down a bit but should heat back up as the deadline approaches.
are but so far they are very exciting. Not a bad start either
going 3-0 on their three game road trip.
I think we can take Wpg. I think the Sens can keep them on the
outside instead of going to the net.
Little more concerned about the Leaf speed. Anderson will probably have to once again step up for us.
Also I like all our lines but just love our 2nd line with Condra, Turris and Alfie. That Turris kid is just terrific with or without the puck and only a matter of time until breaks wide open for the team.
Anyway just chillin' today with a smile thinking of how nice it is to be a Sens fan. Also smiling about the stats of Spezza, Karlsson, Mikhalek and Anderson.
Have a great day Sens fans!!!
The guys is a class act and we cheered our boys on like we came to the game together....can 't give enough props to the guy, He is a class Act for sure!
Great game to be at...
Go Sens Go!
22 out of the past 26 possible points huh? That's beyond not bad numbers and dare I say, getting to elite status. As for the games in hand, one must look at the losses and not the wins.
GO SENS GO!

I did happen to run into Garrioch at the bar we were at. pretty sure I asked him and his wife for their fur hats.
he has 1g 1a in 7 games. and i believe both the points came in game 4 and 6. however CSKA moscow isnt the greatest team, i believe they are fighting for the final playoff spot right now.
Norm MacIver 63 PTS (1992–93)
Karlsson 46 games in 45 games played is already at 44 with 36 games left
Could it be!
they arent Thaaaat close. considering only 2 teams can tie ottawa, and they HAVE to win all their games to do it. I would say as long as Ottawa plays the rest of the games of the season 2 games over .500 then they should make the playoffs
But I'd rather see complete domination
Thanks. I guess I'm an optimist and haven't written him off yet. We have a ton of FWD prospects so he's gonna be in tough to ever make it with us.
im with you on that, i still believe he is an NHL player just needs to mature as a player on and off the ice.
I wonder if he'll come back wiser (a la Jagr). Seeing a young and hard working team like ours, he should want to be part of it. If not, then it's his loss. He can stay in Russia for all I care.
Pretty sure Bobby Orr holds the record, 150ish
Still impressive though how good karlsson is at this young age
What I mean is that Ottawas Record by a defense men not leauge
honestly i dont care (and no sens fan should) how much he succeeds, but im still interested and glad he is succeeding. and weve all had the argument here and i assume most have agreed that he would not fit here as a top 2 Dman here with who we currently have
Pretty sure Bobby Orr holds the record, 150ish
Still impressive though how good karlsson is at this young age
Orr did get 139 points in 1970-71 and was a +124
Also got 46 goals and 135 points in 1974-75 was a +80
Won Norris 8 times, and scoring champion twice, only
defenceman to accomplish those feats !
Wins aside, there are some who would argue Anderson has underperformed overall so far this season...
Careful! Please stop posting stats like these - Karlsson's agent may read this blog and these comments will drive up the price of a new contract...
...as long as you didn't ask him for any of the chicken wings or french fries on his plate...
~Peluso
He was VERY outspoken during the offseason about how bad this team would be... we argued a few times about cheering for the team, instead of just writing them off.
Now that the team is doing REALLY well, he's nowhere to be seen... interesting.
GO SENS GO!!!
@ BigSlice,
Just when we all wonder where he has gone, and why he is not posting for a few days, he suddenly appears, and has
another controversy on the go !!
Big of him to say it and come on board cheering for the team, I am sure he will post when he feels like adding anything or take a side on an issue but not much to talk about other than wait for the next game.
Peluso thanks for the link, like it.
I had a MacIver jersey back in 92 (complete with he "A"). Wore it to games at the civic centre and to several at Maple Leaf Gardens. That record has stood the test of time but I would gladly see EK65 break it wide open.
Great year to be a Sens fan.
He's bust running the "Fail for Nail" campaign over at www.habschirp.ca
Wow.
Go Sens Go!
Of course given that it's TSN, if we lose to the Jets tonight we'll probably be described as slumpimg in their previews for the Leafs game.
game tonite, since the Sens play back to back games, and visit the Leafs on Tuesday night in Toronto.
Do you go with Anderson for both games ?
Or do you rest Anderson, and start Auld tonite against Jets?
To me , you keep going with Anderson for both games, as he is on a roll, and not looking tired.
Hope what AFM11 posted above really happens !!
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!
didnt know if u saw this ? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle2303423/
Murray excepts another 5 too make the team next year wonder who the 5 are
Mika
Silfverberg
Lehner
Stone
Borcop
I agree. Definitely start Anderson in both games regardless of whether or not it's back to back. He played back to back games against Philly last week so I'm sure he can handle the Jets and Leafs. He's really on his game lately.
5 does seem a bit agressive eh? Surprising to see that.
Thank God Anderson idn't in the all star game. He's going to need the rest. Auld is going to end up the highest paid goalie per minute played in the league. Oh wait, I forgot about Dipietro.
Please get Stone off of any of these lists. He is at least 2 years of AHL conditioning away from the big leagues.
Mika, Silfverberg, lehner, borocop and gryba are my guesses (replacing regin, butler, auld, carkner and kuba)
I believe it will help his development to go from WHL to AHL to NHL.
This video Was amazing !! For those of you who haven't watched it yet, Go watch it KNOW !!
Gave me the chills !
His skating is not ready. It was proven at the World Juniors. He can go play with corey locke in the AHL he is a great playmaker.
Sure players defy the odds these days but the advanced scouting that exists now, and for a guy like stone to fall to the 5th round, I highly doubt he will go from 5th round to WHL domination to top line winger in the NHL (I'm assuming your suggesting he plays with spezza) all in a matter of 3 years?
Locke dominated the CHL also, and is smaller than Stone but 3x the skater he is. Stone skating has improved, but seriously we are wayyyyy to high on him right now. Everytime I see a sens fan drool over Stone all I think about is Justin Pogge and how the fans reaction to him allowed JFJ to trade Rask and keep Pogge
"His skating is not ready. It was proven at the World Juniors"
Really, that's the best you can do? Did you watch the World Juniors? What was proven?
You better alert Bob McKenzie (who picked him as Canada's best player) and whomever made the picks for each team's best players (who also picked Stone)
Locke is 3x the skater that Stone is? Have you ever seen Locke play?
I think he'll continue to improve and be a solid NHLer but not by next year - it will take a few.
Sigh... that 5 is because Auld, Carkner, Kuba, Konopka and Winchester (or maybe Regin) will all be gone.
It's not about 5 young guys forcing other guys out.
I agree,
I made him a friendly wager this past summer, when most agreed we would not be a playoff team.
I put forth my arguments, and challenged Tookie that if they make the playoffs as I say, he would have to change his name from Tookie to "I know nothing about hockey"
and if the Sens did not make it I would take that name.
He has acknowleged this and still stands by it, and early on was very vocal, as we sputtered out of the gate with the Fail for Nail, but I agree ever since our surge up the standings, he has been less and less visable.
Not sure but most of us Sens fans have been ecstatic about this team, this year, howeve Tookie (or I know nothing about hockey :)... not so much????
I guarantee you 2 if not 3 of the 5 guys you mention will still be here next year... My bet is that Carkner, Konopka and Winchester are still here next year...
I agree - my problem is with all the geniuses who already seem to know that he will never be an NHL'er.
Happy to make a friendly wager.
It's possible of course. BM might decide that Regin* and Winchester should stay for future depth (they're both young). Or he may decide that we still need Konopka or Carkner for depth if the younger guys aren't quite ready. But regardless he should move most of those guys at the deadline since he won't know until training camp if the young guys are ready yet.
* I only include Regin since he's just about played (or injured) himself off the team, even though he's an RFA. Murray may let him walk and keep Winnie. I'm confident the other RFAs will be resigned unless some team makes an offer on one that we cannot refuse.
He turned out to be 6 foot 9 and still a poor skater. But he's a stay-at-home D.
C'mon man, believe that Stone can be great one day if you like (which I do myself) but you can't just overlook his skating.
I just think it's a little too much turnover to lose all those guys.. But, the more i think of it, you may be right. The only one I really can't see leaving is Carkner, he is never going to wow with his skill, but i think the Sens really like what he brings in terms of stability, he will most likely continue to flip flop with whoever else they keep as the 6th/7th defenceman...
I agree with you on Regin..
I think that one of Winchester or Konopka comes back..
And then what happens with Daugavins? Is he sure fire going to be next year?
If Boro and Gryba are both 100% ready for next year then Carkner is gone. Or if we obtain someone else new.
Phillips and Gonchar (we're stuck with)
Karlsson and Cowen - the future
Lee - still could be part of the future
So that leaves one starter and one spare.
Daugavins is back next year I think unless he gets passed by too many of the younger guys or gets packaged in a trade.
... and yeah Winnie or Konopka as a depth center probably works, but if Zibby is ready and pushes Smith to the fourth line then maybe not.
Fully agreed. Must see TV for SENS fans! Where is the narration from is my only question.
I think they would rather move Zibby to the wing instead of moving Smith down... I agree that if Boro and Gryba both make it then yeah someone has to go, which would most likely be Carkner, but I don't think both of those guys make it..
I still think it will only be Zibanejad, Silfverberg (which isn't a guarantee in any way) and one of the Boro or Gryba that make this team next year... So to me we only see 2 or 3 new faces on this team next year...
If Murray makes a trade at the deadline, then that throws a wrinkle in the projections too...
I never said he wouldnt be an NHLer but what I did say is that he wont be one of the rare prospects in the ENTIRE league to jump from WHL straight to NHL
He will need some seasoning in the AHL just like every single prospect does. Those who think he dominated the world Juniors and dominated the WHL think he can produce at the NHL level are wrong. He will take time and no need rushing him
IF (totally huge IF here) but IF our prospects all progress really well (or if Murray decides to have them "learn in the NHL") we could have lines like this:
Greening - Spezza - MM9
Silvferberg - Turris - Alfie
Foligno - Zibby - Butler
Condra - Smith - Neil
(Regin/Daugavins)
Not saying that will happen, but that's just one possible scenario where there's really no room for Winchester and Konopka (though I might move Regin in this particular situation and keep Winnie).
I like your lines alot, and I was a huge Regin Supporter before, but with the talent coming up winnie is the better option, as he can play any forward position, and can be the #13 forward. Regin is more a top 9 guy where winnie can play any line
So really, 2-3 years from now maybe we get Kono back??
