Game Day- Sens Visit Slumping Habs

After a massive win over the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Senators will look to keep their recent run going when they visit the slumping Montreal Canadiens.

The Sens have gone eight games without a regulation loss and are the hottest team in the NHL. The last team to beat the Sens in regulation? The Montreal Canadiens back on December 27th.

Pierre Gauthier's Habs are a mess right now, plain and simple. They have just three wins in their past ten games and sit nine points back of the final playoff spot in the east. They have made unnecessary coaching changes, traded for a brutal contract in Tomas Kaberle and then on Thursday, traded their most talented player mid game for what seemed like an awful return.

All that said, a game in Montreal is never easy so there is no room for the streaking Sens to take the Habs lightly. Montreal has taken both meetings between the two teams this season.

The Senators are coming off their biggest win of the season, a convincing 3-0 win over the New York Rangers. The teams behind Ottawa keep winning so there still isn't a ton of wiggle room, meaning it's another huge two points up for grabs tonight. The Sens are six points clear of the 9th place Pittsburgh Penguins.

Craig Anderson picked up his first shutout of the season at MSG and continued his strong play of late. He will start again in Montreal.

Matt Carkner will take Brian Lee's spot in the line up.

What do people think of a trade centered around Kuba for James Van Riemsdyk to shore up our left wing? Philly needs a D pretty badly with their top 2 guys out.

I sure hope we win tonight. It just would look weird if we couldn't beat a team that has in my opinion been completely ruined by their gm. He is panacking and making all the wrong moves every time they go on a loosing streak
After beating new york in such a fashion, I really feel that a win tonight would again prove to teams around the league were for real. Ya montreal is brutal but the true contenders bring their 'A' game every night. And usually even more against bad teams because the true offensive stars feel like its an opportunti to rack up some points. The sens were in one of these shitty teams back during the original loosing streak in Oct and had teams walk all over us. Now its our turn! Lets blow them out in their own barn

Apparently Toronto is offering Schenn for VanRiemsdyk so we would have to offer up a whole lot more than Kuba.

The Sens need to be careful with a wounded Habs team, you can't take any team likely in the NHL. Hopefully they come out strong & hammer the smaller Habs at every opportunity. A convincing victory tonight is require to stay ahead of the teams behind them.

I would do a Kuba for Van Reimsdyke but I'm not sure Philly would or Murray would at this point with the team playing so well & the Karlsson/Kuba tandem playing so well. That been said though, Kuba is 35 yrs old & a UFA, there is no guearantee he will play this well it they re-sign him, so I would make that deal. Van Reinsdyke is a former 1st rd pick, I would think Philly would want more or trade a lesser prospect.

I've been hoping they would try that too. I'd like to see Foligno get a long run with top six minutes...

At first I looked at Foligno on the third line as a demotion for him, but after watching this team play the last handful of games, Foligno on the third line gives us a bit more of an offensive punch on the third line than Condra.

Our top three lines are very balanced. Let's not mess with a winning line-up.

I'm not a fan of JVR at all, don't make another trade Murray. Keep the chemistry going. So what if we're not a contender this season? We're already way ahead of everyone's expectations and this is only year one of the rebuild. I'd hate to see a pick or any of our prospects go to patch an immediate need of what we have coming in the future (even though Turris was exactly that, but we did have a surplus of dmen and that trade fixed both needs).

If we can get a 2nd for Kuba to make up for the 2nd we lost in the Turris trade, I think we do that as long as Murray knows that Lee or Gryba can step in and replace Kuba's quality minutes (which I'm not confident that they can, but that's why I trust Murray more than myself).

Gryba/Blood/O'brien, but I'm not sure if they fit top 15, I also think Borowiecki should be higher on the list. He's probably the closest out of everyone listed to see a jump to the NHL, especially this season.

But you also might be making your list based on overall potential instead of closest to making NHL.

The Sens struggle against the Habs. The Habs speed gives our D nightmares.. that's what happened last game with a 6-2 loss.

Let's hope the Sens play hard and get on them all game.

Mtl will want to show they can win without Cammy.

A win tonight will go a long way to getting more points and maybe getting room from the 8th place Caps.

If you look at the East standings -- I think only Pitts & Buffalo (once both are healthy) stand a chance of getting back into the top 8... that leaves 2 of either Ottawa, Toronto, NJ or Florida not make it. Washington will probably catch Florida for the lead in their division soon and Florida will fall in the standings. It's so close. Gonna be a great run to April.

We need to take it to them hard, Price could be our biggest challenge.

We need to keep the wins and the points coming, tonight is a chance to make up for the goals against we suffered early season, the teams I would love to inflict pain on by a blow out score is the Leafs obviously and then the Habs.

A friend of mine does a lot of coverage for the CCHL and he was talking to one of the Bruins scouts. The scout said something along the lines of "people are freaking out over the 2nd round draft pick because they're evaluating it like it's a pick from last year. This year isn't as deep of a draft." I think that probably explains why we're seeing a lot of teams throwing in second rounders in their trades this year

I don't know what to do about tonight. Sens vs Habs or Tebow Time? I'll have to switch between both.

Sens need to dominate the Habs tonight. Great teams have that "killer instinct" to put teams away when they're down, and the Sens need to do that tonight. I don't know if I'll be satisfied with just a win tonight, we need to kick MTL when they're down and put the final nail in the coffin to the Habs season.

I would love nothing more than to see the Sens redeem themselves after that pathetic 6-2 loss to the Habs on boxing day, and run up the score on these clowns 8-0.

The Canadians are one of the most winning-est and storied franchises in professional sports, and Pierre Gauthier has turned them into the laughing stock of the NHL.

I'm sick and tired of telecasts involving reporters defending dion phanuef ( since he was voted as the most over-rated player) , I'm sick of reporters talking about " Reimer being one of the elite goaltenders in the league" or how " Kessel is a definite for the Hart trophy or even how all of a sudden the NHL All star voting system is such a big flaw because 4 Senators Made it to ASG, while only 3 made it from the leafs. Not only that , But Sportsnet ( owned by rogers who also own the Maple leafs) blabbering about 15 things learnt from Brian Burke. Or even the day to day lives of Lupul and Kessel.

What really Should be broadcasted?
1) The Rise of the St louis blues and their surprising Goal tending.
2.) The surprising rise and consistency of The Florida Panthers

3.)How Nashville's been So consistent and in a playoff spot even with a lack of elite forwards.

4.) What Are the next steps for Columbus , Specifically at the Deadline.

5.) What The Fuck is going to happen with Phoenix going into the next few years?

What about trading Kuba or Gonchar in some kind of package (if need be) for Derek Roy. I think he would be a perfect fit on either of the top 2 lines. He has only one year remaining on his contract at 4.0million. The beauty part about him is that he's only 28 and would probably take a home town discount for the new contract. He could be a perfect long term second line winger with Turris

Matt Read is 25, if you're going to tell someone to do their homework, at least look up relevant data to support your argument. I realize it is only 5 months in the difference, but once again, you told me to do my homework yet were wrong in one of your facts.

Also you stated that he's been in the AHL all this time, which is also false. He was playing in the CHA which is a Collegiate all hockey conference that plays in the NCAA Div. 1 level.

He spent 4 years playing at Bemidji State. I would assume, but can not say for certain, that he got a College degree. He then spent 11 games in the AHL playing for Adirondack before being called up to the Flyers.

In his non-phenom hockey career, he has been a point per game producer at every level he's been so far. At the start of this season he scored 13 points in 11 games in the AHL. In the NHL to date he has 26 points - 13 goals and 13 assists, while playing on one of the most offensively dominant and deep teams in the league. He has 3 game winning goals and is a +8.

I feel terrible about it, but a friend of mine found a website online that had perfect knock offs of the Sens third jersey. It cost me $40 and came with free shipping. The jersey is perfect. I think there was a single loose stitch.

Comes with the shoulder patches, all star game patch, lace up, tie down, the weird collar thing and stitched on names and number plates and the C. I chose the Alfredsson option over the other 4 guys they had available.

I wish I could afford to have bought one of the real ones, but I am a poor student. When I finally get out into the real world though, I will make up for it by getting a real one.

Forced to watch the game in Punjabi and not in HD! I second the notion that CBC will be forced to show our games on Saturdays when their previous Laff's end up as a pay per view in the hopefully not too distant future. The funny thing is I think I understand more in Punjabi than when Bob Cole was doing the games.

Our powerplay is despicable.

We can blame Melnyk and his coach hiring interference for that ...If i'm not mistaken Cameron is in charge of the PP..We started the season with a strong PP..but after the first 20 games, other teams have figured out our PP and Cameron has done shit all bout it...

Plus every time i piss on the sens for their horrible first period play they show up in the second and third...

I have to say, I'm from Summerside, PE and grew up with Dave Cameron's son, which has given me the opportunity to meet Dave a few times. Never really liked the guy, and following his coaching career, I never did think he was anything too special as a coach. It became very obvious to me last year at the WJC that he is not the most tactful coach out there.

Unfortunately Summerside also is the hometown of Doug MacLean. Guy is a joke for Sportsnet.

regarding the game... Why can't the sens play their third period style of hockey in the first and second period? I'm not complaining about the exiting thirds...but we could have thumped them if we showed up in the first two periods..seemed like we played to preserve a shutout for Andy and once that was out the window, we hit the accelerator...

Sens fans dont need to go to the gym anymore.. this season i've lost weight sitting through the last 20-25 minutes of sens games...

When it comes to final playoff spots I know that shootout wins are not counted for those fighting for the 8th spot in the standings. Do they take away a total of 2 pts... or just 1 pt as the extra for the shootout?

I believe that only comes into affect when teams are fighting for the final spots correct -- or are they taken out for all of the top 8 teams?

According to Bob Cole Gonachar played about 48 mins lastnight, i mean hey, the guy is a Legend but every dog has his day. He still has a great hockey voice but he only knows Spezza, the rest he's just reading numbers. I wonder why they has Dean Brown calling the Winnipeg game?

I hope BM does nothing at the Deadline, why would he? We have 3 lines playing well, i just hope Anderson can hold up, he's gonna end up playing at least 70 games at this point.

yes we have played 5 more games than Boston so being a point away is skewed but it would be cool to pass them at least until they catch up in games.

While I love the wins, the positive energy and the drama around this team, I can't shake a feeling that it's as much about how bad the other teams are playing as it's about how strong/lucky the Sens are.

It's like the others finally get a taste of what the Sens had to endure last year.

I know this is going to sound like a big homer comment, but a deep playoff run isn't out of the question for this team. There's a lot of hockey to play between now and april, but if the team we've seen in the last few weeks is the real Senators team, then I don't think anyone should write them off come playoff time.

I really don't think Murray is going to be a seller at the deadline.

I see your reading skills are about as strong as your research skills. Try going over what I said in response to your posts again, only this time read the words that I said.

I think Kuba + Stone for Read would be a horrible trade. If you read my posts, not once do I say that I support that trade. All I did was cut down the notion that Read is an NHL journeyman. And then your rebuttle that he spent all these years in the AHL, after telling me to do my homework.

I am with you on the playoff run but we have to play better than last night to go very far.
Anderson on his game and this team firing on all cylinders we are hard to beat.
Boston is the only team I wonder about going through.

At some point the way they are playing you have to think anything is possible.
