Nobody told me a rebuild would be this fun!
The Senators picked up their fourth straight win and a huge two points with a tough road stretch looming. All Star starter Daniel Alfredsson scored into the empty net and added two assists in another stellar performance from the Captain. Jason Spezza, another All Star, scored his 15th and the newest Senator, Kyle Turris scored his first in an Ottawa uniform.
The real story in this one was Craig Anderson.
The Senators ran around in their own end for prolonged stretches tonight and Anderson was up to the challenge. He made a number of excellent saves, controlled his rebounds well, and battled from opening puck drop to the final horn.
Said this on Twitter but I think this may have been Anderson's best game of the season.
As if seeing the Sens vault the idle Pittsburgh Penguins for 5th in the Eastern Conference wasn't good enough, fans were given one more reason to get excited when Mika Zibanejad broke in and scored a beauty of a goal to clinch the Gold Medal for Sweden.
Earlier in the day, Mark Stone, another top notch Sens prospect, went home with a Bronze Medal and was named one of the players of the tournament for the Canadian side. The future is unbelievably bright for this organization but to the surprise of many, the present is every bit as promising.
Sit back and enjoy the ride Sens fans!
- While we are talking about young players Sens fans should be excited about, another stand out performance from Jared Cowen. With Phillips sidelined, Cowen logged just over 23 minutes of ice time and was a +4 on the night. Along with Sergei Gonchar, the two were out against Steven Stamkos most of the night.
Missed it. Did I have some people trying to drag me in to the gutter? I've found it best to just ignore that type completely!
Trade idea....
The st louis blues have an insane amount of talent on their roster. Many of which will be RFA's this year. (Stewart, Oshie, Perron, (Berglund next year)). Each of these four players will ask for somewhere between 3 and 5 million. St louis is a budget team and simply cannot afford it. Yes they could fit it under the cap but they just won't spend to the cap. With players such as Macdonald, Backes, Steen, D'Agostini, Pietrangelo, Halak already signed they just won't be able to keep all 4 upcoming RFA's. They may have to trade away one or even two of them. I personally would love any one of these 4 players. However... st Louis just traded away their precious 1st overall pick for Stewart so they wont be getting rid of him any time soon. I'm also pretty sure they love their hard nose American kid T.J Oshie. That leaves out pure goal scorer and Quebecer David Perron and big Swedish Patrick Bergland. If anyone hasn't seen either of these two players play, then please do me a favor and check them out on YouTube. Both of these players would fit in perfectly, wouldn't cost a ridiculous amount to re-sign, or to trade for. And finally we could have a proper winger for Spezza
Thoughts?
Leaf fans should keep their traps shut cause quite frankly their organization has been and continues to be pathetic.
Rumour is Getzlaf and Perry could be in play, both only 26 years old and drafted by Murray. Our first and a prospect would be the price I'm sure. Would Murray be interested? Does it help our re-build?
Yeah it got frustrating pretty quickly but the twitter world was quick to take out the trash for you (myself included). Even Scott Cullen from TSN was talking crap, but he got ambushed pretty quickly. It's amazing how Leaf fans took the ASG results to heart
The more i think about it, I don't think i would go after Getzlaf or Perry, they will be 27 next year, and if it costs us a pick and prospect, we are pulling a kessel. Lets go young, and pick up some quality ufa's when the time is right. Ufa's don't cost us players.
Leaf fans should STFU. Sens have the #2 ranked prospect pool in the nhl. As long as Murray holds onto his high picks it will grow even stronger. Let's take our time and draft. Keep our eye on the LONG TERM ball. It's great we are doing so well as an nhl team this year already but remember Colorado did this, then ended up drafting in the lottery the next year. No dealing picks or huge prospects, no big fish hunting. No letting our nhl standings impact our decisions with future players. Lets horde them and keep drafting them.
THAT IS HOW YOU GIVE YOURSELF THE BEST CHANCE FOR A DECADE TO WIN A CUP! GO SENS GO!
I particularly enjoyed the PA music at the game. I'm not a metal head but, on the main, it was fun and energetic. Hardly any of that dance shit and NO more Kentucky backwater "good old, cotteneyed" cheeseball sing along crap.
(Wasn't impressed by the band though...)
We still need to see how Rundblad and that pick turn out to actually figure out if it were a good trade. So far, although I was a Rundblad fan, I think the trade was good.
Quoting Michael Figueiredo:
This is a serious question: who's ranked 1st? I'm assuming Edmonton. I haven't really been paying too much attention lately.
Florida...
They have one hell of a prospect pool
"Sens will finish bottom 3..."
"Trade Spezza..."
"Fail for Nail..."
"Blah, blah, blah..."
I don't think I need to put in names besides those quotes ;)
What a great game by Andy, nice to see him steal a game from start to finish, as the game was a lot closer than the score indicates thanks to him. Turris couldn't wipe that smile off his face even if he had a mr clean magic eraser thingy.
The only thing I don't like is how many games the other teams in the league have compared to us. The only thing the Sens can do is keep winning and see where they end up, but I hate that feeling. Let's enjoy 5th, but let's not go overboard and get too excited ;)
I'm already excited about next year's training camp, haha, is that wrong? Stone, Zibby, Puemple, Prince, Lehner, and many, many, many others! :)
last night's game, was one of his best !!
Our top 3 lines shared the scoring, and Turris finally clicked, with his first goal as a Senator !
The next 4 games, are no doubt the most challenges this team will face, to stay with top 5 teams, or fail and slide back in the standings.
Should they upset the Flyers in Philly, I truly hope, that
in return match on Sunday in Ottawa, we avenge the 7-1 or
7-2 score in early October !
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!
http://twitter.com/SunGarrioch - "My kids wouldn't have it any other way," said Alfredsson on Karlsson.
A guy at work (leaf fan - i speak to him as part of my disabled in the community program) said that this proves that the workers in the Federal Government have nothing better to do than vote for the ASG.
There are two things that need to be said aboutbthis:
(1) Most of the workers in the Federal Government in Ottawa aren't sens fans which he knows because....
(2) We both work for the Federal Government.
Some props for the ballot stuffing should go to the Senator organisation who apparently had an All Star Voting Plan. A thank you e-mail went out yeaterday to all employees and it specifically mentioned what a good job they had done in making sure Phil Kesel was knocked from the list. Hilarious.
That's pretty much how I feel. The season is well on it's way. Players have had chance to "shake off rust", get used to coaches/systems , create chemestry with each other...no more excuses for anyone, it's time to determine who really belongs into the playoffs.
Let's see how we play with the big boys!!! If we grab a few 4+ points in the next few games (Phi, Phi, Pitts, NYR), then we deserve to be in a playoff spot. If they end up losing most of them, then they will get bumped down to the 8/9 area and try be a playoff bubble team. time to put up, or shutup Sens...AND I'LL BE CHEARING MY ASS OFF!!!
Hehe...well there are only two things to be said about that:
1) The provincial government workers in Toronto have just as much time to vote.
2) I know this as I work for the Provincial Government.
So no one can use that crap as an excuse ;)
I think the MINIMUM it would take to get Getzlaf or Perry would be our 1st and a prospect. I agree the cost will likely be prohibitive but Murray should listen to any proposal that doesn't include Karlsson or Cowen.
I know we like to bash the Kessel deal but it really wasn't as terrible as it is fun to make out. 2 1st rounders for kessel isn't that high a price at all. Burke's mistake was failing to realise that Toronto were still going to be so shitty for the first two years after the deal.
I know this is lazy but I think most Sens fans would trade Foligno and O'Brien for Kessel. If Toronto had been mid pack 2 picks say around the 10-20 range would have probably been worth it.
I would be happy in giving up 2 first round picks for Getzlaf or Perry in a normal situation but we are rebuilding and I don't think the equivalent of 2 firsts would get the job done. Taking Karlsson and Cowen out of the equation, I think Anaheim would want our first this year, Noesen or Puempel and Michalek - and that's too much.
I don't believe trades are necessarily going against the rebuild model, it depends who you trade for and Getzlaf or Perry are right on the bubble of good/bad. Ryan would be a better option (even though Getzlaf is awesome).
Getzlaf or Perry would be awesome for Sens, but the cost to acquire might not be to Murray's thinking !
Was yesterday, perhaps with the exception of clinching their first ever SCF birth, the proudest day for sens fans? wowza!
the next four games are going to be intense. great timing though as we are playing the best hockey of the season. Anderson picked a fine night to steal his first victory for the sens last night. He's going to have to be even better the next four games!
Jared Cowen was a plus 4 last night. if he keeps this up, I'd love to see him get some Calder love. would love to see him nominated. If RNH's shoulder injury derails his season, its an open race. there are a lot of great rookies having great seasons but Cowen is right up there with them.
I've really noticed how our D often goes (and stays) deep in the offensive zone during the rush, but are always covered by a straggling forward that will play the point until the D comes back before they start cycling the puck (the forwards often being Alfie, Greening, Condra I noticed). Great responsible team play, love it! :). Creates very exciting hockey to watch in my opinion.
Lyndon Slewidge is great, but she was definitely interesting. Sensations should definitely sell clothing more like that dress she was wearing and have the loud crowd wear it!
Way to go Sens every game is a blast to go to, 13th sell out - way to go sens army!
PRAISE ALFIE
Bobby Ryan is only 24 and still young enough to fit the criteria we are looking for.
There are suggestions floating around that the leafs may take a run at getzlaf which has me wondering what peices they intend to move? I'm guessing Kadri and Schenn as a starting point.
you can all kiss my "Stone" cold "Zibby!!!!
Love our propsects and our drafting, and as much as I love Russian people, keep staying away from those arrogant, selfish, cocky, hockey players!
Go Sens!
He is still one hell of a good third liner and injuries happen as we all know providing the flexibility for him to move up in the line up. I'm a huge Foligno fan and this should allow us to retain him at a reasonable price moving forward.
Should certainly be interesting next year when Silfverberg and Zibanejad are pushing for spots on the big club. We could potentially have a third line that is as good as our 2nd.
Filip Kuba - what a turn around season he's had, but please do not resign him
Zack Smith - I really did not see what warranted a 1-way deal over the offseason, I saw he could drop his gloves and take lots of penalties, but I have been so impressed this year by his puck possession skills and that shot of his seems to be getting better every game.
Things I was right about this season:
Sergei Gonchar - I knew he couldn't be as bad as last season and he was ALMOST a friggin all-star :)
Erik Condra - I knew that we had something good going on with Condra when he made the NHL jump last season, and he has continued to bring that hard work ethic and produce on whatever line or whatever role he is playing. I think Tookie and I made a bet that he would/wouldn't have 20 pts this season and at the halfway mark he's got 16.
Alex Auld - What a brutal signing this was, for as many b2b games as we have we really needed a more capable backup. So bad that Anderson is actually playing most of the b2b games himself, I hope this doesnt bite us come march/april.
I felt the same way about the Smith signing. All he seemed to be to me was a goon that ran around and took bad penalties. Last season under Clouston, I couldn't stand Smith's game.
This year he has been the most pleasant surprise on the team. I can't believe how much he has transformed his game under Maclean. He's a player that can really do it all. He's on pace for 24 goals and 41 points this season and when a team can get that kind of production out of their 3rd line center, they're in a pretty good situation.
Sick player.
Not that we drafted either one, but...
Pavel Datsyuk - arrogant, selfish, cocky, hockey players?
Dany Heatley - A Russian?
My handle says it all: You and your stereotypes are POOP!
"Dear leafs fans and habs fans,
If you boo my captain during the all-star game, one of us will end up in the hospital, and the other in jail.
I fahh-kin dare you.
with utmost sincerity,
~Peluso"
I LOVE Peluso - not in a gay way though (not that there's anything wrong with that)
Ok...back to real life, I've been wrong too many times to post them all (I said turris won't happen, also sens are ranked 7 spots higher than I thought they would...I honestly didn't see it coming. oh well, at least i was never on the fail for nail camp right, you guys will take me back right?).
By the sound of the boo's I don't think you were alone on the Kuba hating
Really could give a poop what you think, I am glad that Murray (and most NHL GM's) are staying away from Russian hockey players, and that our rebuild is way ahead of where is should be, and the only Russian left our system will be gone in two years!
And like I said Love Russian people, could not care about their hockey arrogance, and selfishness
"Canada no good" Yak
not putting on the silver medal like they are too good for that,it is all about them, led by their captain.
Go Sens Go!!!
SEASON IS FAR FROM OVER BUT...
I'll play along...
Things I was right about
kuba has done what i thought he would but agreed, they should move him at the deadline and get a return.
while i didnt expect Smith to be this good, I liked the signing and thought he'd be good.
things i was wrong about
i liked the auld signing and suggested it as my first option before they did it but it certainly hasn't been great.
karlsson has been much better than i thought he would be especially defensively.
gonchar has been better defensively than i thought he could be.
sens have been much better than i thought they'd be, i'm still nervous that we'll get hit with some injuries which will send us into a slide but I'm very happy about where we are.
Nicky has the wheels too, just have to figure out where best to play him
Things I was wrong about...NOTHING ! :)
I was really wrong about:
Kuba, he has played himself back into a top 4, where I thought he would never reach that level again
Having said that, please trade him at the deadline, we have plenty of good young D that deserve to come up in our rebuild.
Also have to admit that I never though Karlsson could be as good as he has been, yes his defensive part needs more work, he has picked it up, and he has me out of my seat every time he touches the puck.
Turris, will fit in nicely, but was against the trade when it happened.
Butler - I thought he would pot at least 20 this year, and is no where near what I had expected
Right about
Andersson
Smith
Condra
Alfie - his comeback, and his not retiring (I pray!)
Spezza - and his rebound
Cowen - suprised to see his quick development, but knew he was a stud
Go Sens Go!!!
100%, and I now admit that my prediction to fall anywhere close to the bottom 5 is almost impossible the way this Sens team is playing each and every game.
Players like Smith, Condra, Greening, Foligno, are playing VERY well, Spezza, Alfie, Michalek, playing like STARS and Andy playing reasonably well is all we need!
I clearly did not put much stock into our 3rd and 4th liners but they are the reason this team is not bottom dwellers, that and the fact MacLean has them believing in themselves, thats what he was brought in to do, I didnt think he would be able to do it in his first year.....proved me wrong...
Dont get me wrong tho, I would love to have a top pick, especially in this years draft and in 2013 but if we are doing this well with the kids we have now and some not even playing yet, we are definitely in good shape.
This team has been brought back from the dead and is playing exciting hockey, I keep watching them and waiting for them to drop the ball and start sucking but they just dont.....they might go on short losing streaks but the find ways to bounce back everytime, very resilient bunch.
I still hold out for a chance at a top 5 pick but at 40 games in, the Ottawa Senators have proven me wrong.
That actually felt good!
Is that really you?!
I stands up and slowly start to clap my hands while looking in tookie's direction
I believe that's the first time I've ever hit the like button on one of your comments. And it's probably the first time you've deserved it all season.
Keep the positive attitude. Did you get some this morning ?? Lmao
Halleluah!!!!
God bless Took I know you had it in you!
I think you have turned a very big corner...
Now we have to work on that top 5 pick you a still so stuck on :)
Let's all give him a slow golf clap! Thanks for your honesty Tookie! :)
I forgot about Butler, I was also wrong about him. I thought he could put in 20 or 30, but he'll be lucky to hit 10. He's a sure enough goal scorer, but I think he's lacking motivation or something right now. I'd like to see him play some with Turris and shoot the puck a bit more before I give up on him.
Cheers!
Go=O=Go
One Love
Jaw on floor! LOL
I honestly think that everyone on this team has performed above expectations, from Spezza and Alfie all the way down to Condra and Smith. I think many of us are wanting more from Butler, but even though he hasn't been scoring his all-round game has been good enough to warrant a roster spot.
Greening and Foligno are having good season but I'd like to see them find some consistency in their games. They both go on hot and cold streaks, unlike Smith and Condra who are the model of consistency.
If these "role" players continue to perform like this, they'll have themselves a role in this organization for a very long time.
There's so many reason to be excited about this team, and the prospects the organization possesses, but we're still a long way from being considered one of the leagues elite. I expect we'll get there much sooner than everyone anticipated.
depends on the department, some of them have external as well as internal networks
Something that hasn't been talked about much is our assistant coaches that were brought on. I think some of the Sens success is due to our coaching staff top to bottom, not only MacL.
I think this is the key. MacLean has ensured that this team learns fast from every mistake or bad trend. since a few long losing streaks in the beginning we have been able to avoid going more than 2 straight without a point. that is HUGE! I'm hoping that last night is the first example of how this team has learned to play with and keep a lead. Earlier this year, tampa ties it and the sens hope to get the second point in OT. not last night!
I just made your post +9. I think you're going to hit double figures you old curmudgeon!
Said I would not reply in my last post re you !
Are you really starting to believe in our team, and
if you can post 1 positive comment, I'm sure it will
become a habit you will make us all enjoy reading!!
After all ,you did say "I might be a changed man " or
something close to that .
HOORAY FOR THE NEW TOOKIE !!
Part of the reason that greening is inconsistent is, I believe, that he is one of the players being asked to perform a role he is not particularly suited for.
He's spent most of his time on the top line out of necessity and I think he has been great most of the time he's been there - his speed and work ethic has opened up space for his linemates and he has better hands than a lot of people anticipated but when the rebuild is finally shaken and the majority of our prospects are on the roster I think he'll find himself on the 3rd line where he will excell.
We are shaping up to have an absolutely outstanding 3rd line ina couple of years if the players projected to be on it pan out the way we hope. Greening/Smith/ Noesen anyone? That would be awesome.
Similar to Buffalo last year. Miller liked Lalime so they signed him again to play backup, and he looked about as good as Auld has this year. They used him sparingly. Once Rochester were out of the AHl playoff race they calle dup Enroth, and he became the everyday backup and Lalime was used as target practice
This in my eyes is what will happen for Ottawa this year. Bingo has been brutal and once that season is almsot done, Lehner will be calle dup and will play the b2b games for Anderson to keep him fresh, if and only if we have a chance at the post season.
I gave him a thumbs down to keep him grounded despite agreeing 100% with what he said.
Phaneuf ended 2nd in defensemen in fan voting.
There is something I dont get tho:
NOTE: Fans determined the first 6 players chosen to participate in the 2012 Tim Horton's NHL All-Star Game (3 Forwards, 2 Defensemen, 1 Goalie).
But there is 2 teams...so isnt there 12 players starting? are the 6 others selected by the coach?
I was referring to Anderson being overplayed and having issues come the spring.
leafs fans are like the fat kid in the playground whose parents just got divorced and he found out he has asthma and diabetes in the same day.
habs fans are the girl in the corner who is wearing her grandmothers hand-me-downs, with greasy hair and acne.
~Peluso
Yes I understand, and what I was saying is that come the spring, Lehner will be with us to give Anderson rest even though the games will be more crucial.lol..we wont have to cringe when putting in auld
Are most GMs going to pass on Russian born players at the draft? Did WASH and PITT stay away from Russians during their rebuild? Are you judging a country full of hockey players based on the performance of a bunch of 18 year olds?
I agree with you, the move of completely immature, but don't think for a second the Sens wouldn't draft a Russian-born player if they were the best available player... or have you forgot about the Russian Bear that played for Ottawa? Was Volchenkov selfish or a league-leader in blocked shots when he was in a Sens uniform?
And don’t even say that Volchy was selfish for leaving, or that his decline in play has anything to do with nationality
Why would Habs fans even invest in All Star tickets?? The starting lineup: 4 Sens, 1 Leaf and a Bruins. That would seem like torture to me...
LMFAO!
Hard to stay away from them when they are projected to go 1-2-3...
I agree with the old Russians not being devoted to NHL clubs, but these new Era Russians like Yak, Gal and Grigo are very different, the Stanley Cup is their dream, not simply making it to the NHL.
Alot of people say it was classles to not put on the medal, was it not classless to leave during the playing of the Russian Anthem, you could see hundreds if not thousands head for the exits.
Those who bash the Russians for not being classy or respectful have done the exact same. I could care less if they wear it or not.
OMG!! The therapy is working!! One "positive" step at a time Tookie! (Here's hoping the Sens can muster at least a split with Philly this weekend or we may see old Tookie again.
Washington is gonna be looking even better in a few years, Ovie, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Orlov, Johannsen(sp)...
And whoever they pick in the top 5 this year thx to Colorado, wow....(Yak, Forsberg, Grigo, Gal, Murray)
I think Kuznetsov makes Semin expendable. Why spend the money on Semin when they can improve their club elsewhere with the money they'd give him. If I were Washington I'd hope that either Weber or Suter will be available this summer and throw big money at one of them.
Kuznetsov can probably put up nearly the same amount of production as Semin has this year.
Damn you were too quick, I removed Semin right after I posted that, he is gone I think, just like you said they could go after a big name D and have Kuz replace Semin.
Fans get to vote in 3 forwards, 2 defense, and 1 goalie. They are not necessarily on the same team. The players vote for the 2 captains and the captains end up drafting their team like last year. I'm assuming Alfie will be a Captain and he has admitted he would draft EK first.
Note: the NHL picks all of the other all stars to play in the game.
re: all star voting: i'm not sure but I don't think that the NHL stated that you are voting for the starters per se; just that you are voting for 3 forwards, 2 d and a goalie to play in the game. I dont think that those players necessarily have to start, especially since they won't all be on the same team.
That is exactly right. They are able to play but may be drafted later on by the 2 captains. I hope our guys aren't the last to go like Kessel last yr. Still can't believe he got a car for that...
considering Colorado is one point back of 8th place thanks in large parts to JS Giguere Washington may not get a top 5 pick out of it..closer to 8-14 area.
at this point its safe to say top 5 picks will go to:
colombus-anaheim-islanders-carolina and edmonton/montre al/tampa (one of these 3 is bound to turn it around)
If Alfie is indeed a captain, he wouldn't let that happen I'm sure...
It would be kind of neat though if they do end up on different teams... I'd like to see if Karlsson could contain Spezza! LOL
Couple of questions:
Does Butler have any trade value at the moment? I don't disagree with an earlier post that he should be given more time to develope (I think he'll bounce back towards the end of the season), but I don't see him developing into a top-end talent. What's he worth and what could we get - in your opinion?
Do you really see the Ducks trading one of RPG? I mean, can they keep the core and move some of the pending UFAs? Doesn't that make more sense? I see them getting a nice return for Lydman, but that's just me (I thought he was good, from what I saw from all those Sabre matchups).
PS - Don't hate on the Russians. I think it's more accurate to say that Russia produces a lot of snipers/ players with sick hands. Just so happens that those type of players turn out to be a little more selfish.
If Alfie is one of the captains, no way that would ever happen. I wouldn't be too surprised if he picked his three teammates as his first three selections ;c]
Who would thumbs-down this comment? Glad that Big Rig is 1) doing well 2) will be back. Our D last night seemed a lot less stable without him there to calm everyone down. Anderson REALLY bailed us out last game.
Never thought I'd bash Phillips, but his importance seems marginalized now that Cowen looks more like a regular NHLer than a 20-year-old... maybe that's just my man-crush speaking.
Also, any thoughts on current Sens:
With Foligno (RFA), Winchester (UFA), Regin (RFA), Kuba (UFA), Karlsson (RFA) and Lee (RFA) in contract years - who do you F***/Kill/Marry.
$#!+, i mean, who do you keep, who can you trade and who just gets let go after the season?
Foligno= qualify and give raise
Winchester= offer 2 way deal, let him test market to see if he can have bigger role elsewhere
Regin=see winchester
Lee= Qualify and offer raise
Kuba= Make decision now, offer less money, if he refuses trade at deadline, in a rebuild can't afford to lose for nothing at yera end. regardless of playoff situation (this 5th place seeding is all gravy right now). If market says 4th rounder or less than keep and let walk.
Karlsson= offer him Melnyk's Barbados resort
I know he gets flack, but man I'm I relieved he's back in time for this little stretch of games.
I do not want a single one that thinks they are too good to put on a silver medal.
NO THANKS
JUST PATHETIC
especially a silver medal that was awarded in a game in which only the goalie showe dup to play in. They had 6 shots after 2 periods, not like they deserved gold anyways
Hey Johne,
excellent point on the Asst coaches, they must have a part in this too, but seem to be overlooked
WhoTF did that? Link?
They all did, not like it was 1 guy in specific, even the goalie didnt put it on, it wasnt the medal they wanted, Im pretty sure they were disgusted in their performance, dont think it had anything to do with being too good to wear Silver.
Good point,
Carkner is also a UFA, as is Konopka. De Costa and Daugavins are also RFAs. Tough summer ahead for Sens management, although things will be a little clearer by the end of Jan.
(* - on 2-way deals)
Keep - Foligno, *Regin, Winni, Karlsson, *Daugavins and *De Costa
Trade - Lee
Let go - Konopka, Carkner
Wait and see (deadline) - Kuba (i agree about taking a 3rd or better)
Maybe we could package Kuba+Butler for a pick and a D-man at the deadline if we're still in it?
How awesome would it be to finish 6th and come up against the Panthers in the 1st round? Best case scenario IMO (being somewhat realistic that this)...
Wow that's terrible sportsmanship though. Brutal. I'm glad I was raptly watching the Senators instead.
I do not think that Phillips will be ready for game in Philly, which starts at 1 PM !
Absolutely,
take a look at the draft since 2004, no signifigant Russian has been drafted (2) or made any major impact on their teams.
yes, they are skillful, but individual skill will not beat a team that plays as a team.
For every Volchenkov's I can give you:
Kovalev
Semin
Bryzgalov
as well as a host of Sens wasted picks:
Zubov
Kaigarodov
Nikolin
Bashkirov
Anikayenko
Lyamin
Need I go on?
A few days ago you were all about giving Butler more time?
FLIP FLOP! LOL
Still, the more I think about it, I'd rather keep Kuba for a run at the playoffs. I'd trade Lee and Butler if the return was there.
Are you kidding? By the time we had Alexi he was 3 years overdue for retirement, but he had an awesome career! I'd draft a Kovalev clone in a heartbeat.
Flip-flop indeed A11fie. We'll see what the mood is like in here 5 or 10 games from now. Unless Anderson hits the consistency switch and is rock solid the next several games and Auld improves vastly as backup, I'm not sure how well we will fair on this brutal road swing.
I'd be happy if we could split with the bitch Flyers the first two games.
First off, drafting isn't a science, so expect that picks won't always pan out.
Second off, what I was trying to point out was that the attributes you listed (arrogant, selfish, cocky) aren't inherently 'Russian' characteristics (enter Dany Heatley).
Thirdly, how many of those players do you know personally? I don't know any either (although, I did get to meet Volchy; large, quiet and always smiling), but realize you're judging people you've never met based on media reports... the same media that told us the Sens would win the lottery (we did, just not for Yakupov).
I do agree that Kovalev is a bum... and that his and Semin's effort don't do their skill justice. I don't think it’s a problem with the country or its people, just the personally types - look at Daigle - what a gong show he was...
Quoting AlfieforMayor11:
Sorry you missed my earlier posts, that I have very much respect for the Russian people, and do know many that have many great characteristics.
But with our bad luck history on the Russians we have had, and the fact that many use the KHL as a threat, it is not worth the risk,
And truthfully other than a handful of Russian players, they do not care as much for team success over individual success.
And after witnessing the fookishness arrogance after the Canada win, and the Silver medal I would not want to build my team around a selfish individual... again only my opinion, and not necessarily everyones
But Murray seems to be doing well not drafting any, thats all
Hopefully Anderson is starting his 2nd half surge early this year. It's great to see him put in quality efforts like last night and the last few games.
Despite all that went on yesterday, I think Turris was the most impressive. He's really looking like he'll be a 1B (to Spezza's 1A) type of Center. He was all over the ice, dominating most of his shifts and we all saw the results on the scoreboard. Spezza-Turris-S mith is obviously no Crosby-Malkin-S taal, but it's definitely a lot closer to it then most teams can dress.
Do you not think that maybe it is the Sens scouting of these Russians more at fault? Just because we picked them doesnt mean they automatically pan out for good.
I can name you many if not more draft picks that the Sens got that didnt pan out that werent Russian.
Point is Russians are no worse than any other country, its a select few individuals that tarnish their outlook.
Miguel, sorry man but your point sucks big time. For every Crosby, Yzerman, Sakic, I can name you hundreds of Canadians that didn't pan out. For every Alfie, Lidstrom, Sundin, Forsberg, I can list of hundreds of Swedes that didn't make it.
This Russian stereotype is such crap that's been fed to you and anyone else who will take the bait by the Canadian media.
I'd take the likes of Datsyuk, Ovie, Malkin, Kovalchuk, Federov, Bure, Mogilny, Larionov, Sergei Zubov, Markov, Gonchar, Zhamnov, Kozlov etc etc on my team any day.
We do not need that kind of poor character players on our team, I don't care what their skill level is.
Lucky we will be nowhere near getting a low draft spot to have to considering picking them up in the draft.
It's a statistic, plain and simple. Russian-born draftees are more likely to refuse to play in the AHL or "earn their stripes" in the NHL. Not 100% (far from it) but statistically it bears out. The KHL has a lot to do with that of course and Russia's general lack of willingness to work with NHL clubs on player development etc.
Doesn't mean "never draft a Russian" but it does mean "make sure you really want this guy and he's really willing to come to North America" etc.
