Game Day- Sens Host Struggling Habs

After a few days off for the holiday break, the Ottawa Senators return to action tonight when they play host to the Montreal Canadiens.

The Sens come into the game holding on to the 8th and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference.  A win over a struggling Canadiens team could move the Sens past the 6th place Toronto Maple Leafs who are in Florida tonight.

The situation in Montreal is bad and getting worse.

The Habs have lost five straight and interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth is getting a pretty rough ride in that city.  I understand the issue with not having a Francophone coach in that market but it must be nearly impossible for the Former-Sens captain to get through to his team right now.

With that said, the Habs are a desperate group and will certainly be no push-over.

The Sens will get a huge boost tonight from the return of the team's leading goal scorer.  Milan Michalek passed his baseline concussion tests prior to the break and is ready to return to the line up.  Doesn't sound like MacLean plans to ease him back into the line up either. Michalek skated on the top line with Spezza and Alfredsson at yesterday's practice.

While Michalek returns, Jesse Winchester remains sidelined with a concussion.  Still no time frame for his return but he certainly won't play before the New Year.  The Sens will also be without Chris Phillips.  He is day to day with what the team is calling a minor injury.

Here is how the Senators will line up tonight...

Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Foligno-Turris-Butler
Greening-Smith-Neil
Condra-Konopka-Daugavins

Cowen-Karlsson
Kuba-Gonchar
Lee-Carkner

Craig Anderson gets the start in goal.

For those lucky enough to attend the game tonight, should be fun to see that new scoreboard in action.  While there are still some elements that need to be added before it's fully operational, it's going to be a massive improvement over the old board.

Puck drop is just after 7:30 PM tonight with all the action available on Sportsnet and RDS.  Keep an eye on the comment section for a stream.

  • Huge night for Sens prospects last night. Mark Stone scored three times for Canada in the tournament opener, Zibanejad scored twice for the Swedes and Stephane Da Costa scored three times in an 8-3 Binghamton Senators win.
  • Sens Super Skills goes tomorrow at SBP.  If you haven't had a chance to attend once of these events before, it really is great fun for family with tickets starting as low as $8.  Visit Capital Tickets for more information.

My God please beat'em tonight boys. We're cracking the playoffs this year dudes. I'm sure nobody expected the rebuild to begin this early. So much for Duthie and the rest of the half-wits (exception of Mackenzie) on TSN.

I too had them in the playoffs... even made a risky yet fun wager with Tookie... I say we make the playoffs and he said we finish bottom 5! I am winning...winni ng!!!

While I think the playoffs are very possible as well, keep in mind that Kuba, Carkner, Winchester, Konopka and Auld will all be gone by the deadline and replaced with picks. Now, that won't necessarily make us a lesser team though given that list of names - only Kuba on that list is really contributing significantly so far, but I still expect the mindset for the team in the last quarter of the season to be "get the young guys evaluated and exposed to various situations".

So we could drop out of the playoff picture towards the end of the season.

Huge game tonight boys.

As Yost pointed out, these next 5/6 games are very, VERY winnable.

I never thought I'd say this, but I hate Habs fans invading our barn more than Leaf fans...let's send them home drunk and angry!

Go Sens Go!!

Zach Smith is gonna have a big night, Sens win 3-1

Man. Is Mark Stone beast or what? What are his chances of cracking next year's line up? When was the last time a very late round pick exceeded expectations? Leading the WHL and either slightly ahead of Pearson or behind him in the entire CHL.

A Sens win tonight would be HUGE! Especially if the Weafs lose, too.

Again, another one of those regular season "must-win" games in order to stay in the thick of things.

When this team is healthy, it's hard to disagree that they are a playoff contender.

I have noticed that McKenna has started in nets the last 5 or so games in Bingo, I would assume that this means that Lehner is injured, if so what is the injury, and how long is he out for?

You goddamn RIGHT!

Habs fans are the WORST! Here's why:
-Booing Alfie for no reason
-classless fans booing themselves, trying to chase Price 1 year ago, and now calling him a godsend
-"ole"? I scream "ole" when I plow your mom Habs fan!
-classless the way they treated OUR FORMER CAPTAIN, Randy Cunneyworth
-Pageau gets drafted by the Sens, and Habs reporters ask him if he was disappointed to be drafted by US, rather than the habs (?!?!)
-As our closest geographical rival, THEY SHOULD BE HATED
-all their fans have the arrogance that suggest that they win every year. YOUR TEAM OF MIDGETS SUCKS MONTREAL!

I recommend - NO MERCY, HATE HATE HATE, but it is important to CHEER RANDY CUNNEYWORTH and show habs fans WE are classy!, booooo everything habs

No mercy....

@Peluso,

Agree with all of your points. As far as who I hate more between Hab fans and Leaf fans....that's a tough call.
I think if you look up "arrogant" in the dictionary, you would see a picture of a hab fan, but if you looked up "stupid", you would see a leaf fan.

And for those reasons alone and more so, I chose the next best Canadian team not far from my residence. To this day I have never seen a game at the Bell Centre. All 3 (which isn't much obviously) have all been attended at Scotiabank Place.

oddly enough, i grew up in Ottawa cheering for the Habs (pre 92) and ever since moving to Montreal (in 91) started cheering for the Sens.

Although I used to continue to cheer for the Habs (except for when they played the Sens), i am finding it increasingly more difficult to do every year as the Habs' fans are just so damn obnoxious. So, yes, please do beat the Habs tonight.

as for the Habs vs Laffs, much easier to hate the Laffs.

Washington stopped big losing streaks by winning against the Sens... happened twice the last 2 yrs.

Don't want a repeat tonight. Get on them early guys... bury the bastards...

Also sad to see Winchester is not improving from his concussion (per Ottawa Sun). No penalty & no suspension.. same with Shea Weber -- he is now out with a concussion from a hard hit on which there was no penalty or suspension.... now I did not see the hit to see if there should have been a penalty...

Chirp, please remind everyone to get their votes in for the All-Star game, and in partiuclar vote for Tim thomas as goalie. Reimer does not deserve to be there and anythng we can do as Sens fans to get him out, it should be done. Thomas is the only chance we have to get Reimer out. don't let the Laughs fans dictate how many of their crap players make it. No way Reimer and Lupul, maybe Phaneuf, even get named unless they are voted in.

Lupul has 38 points in 35 games, good for 9th overall in points and you don't think he should get named to the all-star team?? I hate the Leafs too but Lupul deserves to play in the ASG without a doubt.

Well looks like I tried to defend Anderson when I shouldn't have...It looks like the Sens are giving the Habs a late Xmas present, and wrapped it up nicely too...

I get that this team is rebuilding but the Habs SUCK and we got our top scorer back! This shouldn't be happening!! If we were down by 1, fine, but 3? FAK OOF!

Failed to mention that as we rebuild, Lehner will accompany the abundance of 1st rounders from the 2011 Draft along with Silfverberg, Prince, Pageau, etc. Lehner will shut the Habs one day.

I was afraid that the sens would turn into a fully armored anti-slump unit again.

Last year they had lost against the Capitals who had lost 7 straight previous.

This year they lost against a Bruins club who was last at the time, and ever since, the Bruins have been a monster.

They lost to a slumping Caps team again this year, and gave Dale Hunter his first win.

Just last week they gave Carolina their first post regulation win. At the time Carolina was winless in 6 post regulation opportunities.

Now they are getting wrecked by a struggling Canadians team.

I just hope this trend comes to an end.

Not sure man, I think that line has the majority of the shots on net, and Butler has been creating chances.

I think Spezza line is not as good today. I can't count a lucky rebound goal as an indication that the Spezza line has been playing well, before that they hardly had any shots on net and chances.

I was basing it on their lack of back-check and horrible play in their own end. They were terrible in the first half of this game.

The thing that sucks about this kind of loss, is that the Canadiens didn't do anything to earn this win. The Sens literally gave the win to them.

They were playing excellent the first couple of minutes, and dominated them all game long.

But costly mistakes and shotty goaltending can quickly change your fortunes...

This was the Sens gme to win.

I feel sorry for the fans that paid their money and took the time out of their day to see this shit. How embarrassing. Allowing the rival city and their fans in our own barn to cheer during a blowout is down right embarrassing.

I'm just disgusted. Thumbs down all you want. I'm pissed because we deserved to win this game.

What a complete shame.

With a Leafs loss, tonight was a perfect chance to move up the standings against a team that has been struggling the most in the entire National Hockey League.

The goaltending was repulsive. I don't blame the fans one bit if they decide to boo. The message needs to be sent.

Brutal game. Cant expect to be a serious contender with play like that. Once we get rid of some this dead weight and add some more youth things will be better. We have had games like this before and bounced back with nice win streaks. Look for the sens to get right back on track next game.

i dont even know if i want to feel mad about this loss. the canadiens absolutely suck and could not buy a win against any team in this league.....alas there is always the sens a little to the west from montreal, about two hours away where their fans can call it home-away from home, the pressure is not the same as bell centre, but all the other aspects can be mimicked. now there is a nice sweet brand new scoreboard too just like the bell centre has it. all the boxes were checked. the last box asked the sens to fuck themselves up. voila, you have craig anderson wanting the christmas break to still continue, and you had two lines not wanting to backcheck at all. check check check lol

its not the loss that pisses me off, its the loss to the idiotic habs and their idiotic obnoxious arrogant fans.

i dunno, i dont want to get too cynical and start questioning too much, but how in the hell do the sens pull of that kind of game against the fucking habs lol.....just how.

the HABS?? ugh. what the fuck to the habs even have on their team and in their system. they just fucking traded Spacek for Kaberle......fu cking Kaberle lol they have like two real pieces on their team in price and subban.....that s IT...ugh.

im sure maclean is just fuming right now. he is not used to this kind of shit show coming from detroit.

Who here thought this was going to be easy? I certainly did. This team was primed for the kill.

WOW. I mean I can understand that a young, inexperienced team will shit the bed every now and again, but God damn, why does it always happen against our "cross-town" rivals?!?

Habs fans in these parts are certainly obnoxious, aren't they. But I guess there isn't much to live for when you're from Gatineau... Every win counts.

Thank god the Leafs lost.

have to ask why was Condra on our 4th line, when he has been one of our best forwards?
What does Butler have on the coaches/manager that he is given second line, when Condra was great with Turris?
Daugavins, Condra should be playing ahead of Butler.
And yah I am sick of that idiot PK Diver, every game he seems to get some lame BS call made on his shenanigans.
Missed the first two periods, and judging by the outcome and the posts, it was a good game to miss.
And yah it is getting very annoying to have LEAF/HAB fans out cheering us at these games. Lets think of a good way to make sure Sens fans fill these games.
I am hoping for a rebound against the Flames, I will be there and will not be able to change the chanel!
