  • Welcome to the Canadian Tire Centre

The Ottawa Senators have called a press conference for 10:00 AM this morning where it is expected they’ll announce a new partner and a name for the building once known as Scotiabank Place.

And while the reports have yet to be “confirmed”, some good detective work by a couple SensChirp readers leads us to believe the new sponsor is Canadian Tire and the building will be renamed The Canadian Tire Centre.  Plenty of reaction to the new name around these parts yesterday but the reality is it’s a good Canadian company now associated with the Ottawa Senators brand.

Hunt4Chirp Contest Today!

Perhaps from now on the Ottawa Senators would be better off heading into the third period down by a goal.

As was the case in Dallas a couple games ago, the Sens were unable to hold a third period last night and ended up coughing up the two points to the Washington Capitals for the second time in less than a week.

Thanks to a hard-working goal by Erik Condra and a fantastic individual effort by Nick Foligno, the Sens held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.  But it would not last.

A power play goal by Backstrom tied it and not long after that, off setting roughing calls to Brooks Laich and Nick Folingo gave the Caps some extra ice to work with and they took advantage. Ovechkin scored the go-ahead and just 15 seconds after that Brouwer gave the visitors a two goal cushion.

It was a cushion they'd need as Michalek scored his 17th to give the Sens hope and again proved why you CAN NOT leave a Sens game early. Alfredsson had a glorious chance to tie the game late but could not convert.

I know it was already discussed at length in the comment section but a quick rant about the non-call on Ovechkin.

As MacLean pointed out in his post-game scrum, Chris Neil is not the type of guy to embellish. After watching Neil land a solid hit on Ovechkin, you had to know Ovi was going to retaliate and I watched as the ref followed the two up the ice. To call a dive on that play is a complete joke. You have to be pretty damn sure that there was no spear and because it was the trailing ref that made the call, how in the world could he determine, definitively, that there was no spear? Awful, awful call. Although as Senators fans, we should be used to this garbage by now.

OK, I feel better now.

Sens are right back at it today when they travel to visit the New Jersey Devils. Earlier in the week MacLean suggested that Alex Auld would get the start. No morning skate but we should have any word on line up changes later this afternoon.

The Hunt4Chirp is ON!

Be sure to follow @SensChirp and @Wisers_Ottawa for clues throughout the day. The beginning at 6:00 PM, you have to hunt us down somewhere in the city of Ottawa and when you think you've found us ask, "Are you SensChirp and the Wisers Guy?" First two people to ask us that question will score a pair of tickets in the 100 Level Wisers Box for Jets/Sens in January. Must be legal drinking age to win.

Good Luck!

The loss wasn't the worst of the game, just the missed call on Neil. Which caused us the loss.

Good to see michalek and foligno show good chemistry. Let's now see Greening back on the 3rd line. Shove Filatov and Butler with Spezza

Hope so, he's played good since getting a skate to the face. At least better than bobby butler's play.. I still think he has tons of potential and I see him blowing out in a goalfest within a week if he can actually get comfortable. Hope he gets a decent shot (more than 2 games without being benched)

I wouldn't blame it all on that call but it didn't help. We should've scored on the 5-3 or at least on one of the other penalties in the game.

I've been one of the bigger advocates for leaving Filatov in Bingo until he proves he should get a chance but even I'm running out of reasons why Butler continues to be in and Filatov is out.

It really does make you wonder what MacLean is seeing that we aren't. Is the guy seriously under conditioned? Does his attitude stink? Does he just float around at practice and not take instruction. What is he doing that the coaches don't like?

It's not like he's being kept out by superstars playing at the top of their game.

I'm starting to really feel bad for Spezza. I highly doubt there is another first line in the league that has two players worse than Greening and Butler. I'm not saying Greening is a bad player but he isn't fit for first line duty. He got off to a hot start this year but he's really fallen off big time. Butler just sucks. I wish we had the answer in Filatov but he's garbage too.

I guess Spezza and the rest of us just have to be patient until those spots can be filled one way or another. Some shifts he must feel like he's out on the ice all on his own.

The play that sticks out in my mind was on the second pp late in the 3rd. Michalek has the puck off the end boards by the blue line, he looks and gives a 4 foot pass to spezza then bolts to the net, knowing spezza will hit him, which spezza does within seconds of receiving the pass. Michalek takes it and gets a great scoring chance as a result

Granted its a powerplay, but this is the type of play I keep referrign to in terms of skill needed to play with spezza. Greening would never do that, butler wouldn't do that

Spezza needs a player that not only finds holes but creates holes himself the way michalek did on that one play.

With greening and butler you know what your getting. Greening doing dirty work in corners and in front of net and butler who will just float in and out of holes, ALL WATCHING SPEZZA hoping to get a pass.

Michalek used spezza for his own play, but thats where Spezza is best

Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson
Greening-Foligno-Butler (weakess second line in the NHL)
Condra-Smith-Daugavins (checking line thats win's us games)
Neil-Winchester-Konopka (checking line)

havent had a chance to vent on last nights game.
For the love of all that is good can someone please ask our future star D-man to HIT THE FREAKIN NET. My god Karlsson simply cannot put an easy shot through. A weeker shot that gets to the net is 100% better than one that rips off the glass and comes out on the PP.
And then we have Gonchar who must lead the league in shooting at feet and shim pads for blocked shots..
Sorry but in 2 years I still don't see what he brings
he makes me miss Kuba

These guys especially on the powerplay have to improve their shooting.
And I know it has been mentioned at nausium but, right now we really only have 3 lines, the top two really only make up one decent line.
Why is it that when they brought up Butler, that Spezza also loses Michalek? Keep MM9 with Spezza and add Butler/Filatov Then keep Foligno with Alfie, and give each line someone they can play with.

I'm just looking at the free agent list for forwards this summer. Murray said that if he does sign an FA he would have to be under 30 years old. Here's a list of the top UFA forwards under 30:

Parise
Semin
Penner
Hemsky
Boyes
Tuomo Ruutu
A Kostitsyn
Grabovski
Stempniak

That's really a weak group of free agents. I hope we try our best to bring in Parise but I can't see that happening. Grabovski would be an awesome addition too but the Leafs will likely resign him.

say it quietly, but Alfie isn't good enough for regular first line minutes anymore. He's better suited to the 2nd.

The senators only have 2 players worthy of playing extended minutes on the 1st line - Spezza and Michalek, whoever Spezza plays with that isn't called Milan or Daniel is going to be unproven.

Greening has shown the work ethic to sit there, battle and drive to the net. I agree he isn't playing brilliantly at the moment but the only player you could replace him with, other than Michalek, is Foligno who is currently playing 2C.

When Regin is back we will have more options (by that I mean somebody else in the mix who is basically unproven).

I think they will give Butler a couple more games and then bring Filatov in for a run. If not I do begin to question the worth of paying him NHL money to sit on the bench.

If we don't want to play him, why pay him. What do we care if he goes to the KNL if we don't care to play him.

You know it could really just be a pressure test for Filatov. Murray calling his bluff

Haven't you guys got the memo yet!!! BM found a solution for our 2C problem, its Jason Spezza, our 1C is Nick Foligno right now. Compare the two lines

Greening / Spezza / Butler
Michalek / Foligno / Alfredson

Now you tell me which line looks like a #1 unit (well neither but which one is closest) and which has been getting results the last couple of games?

Without making a single trade BM was able to fix our 2C hole by giving Spezza absolute crap for offensive wingers.

It may be a similar situation to what happened to Lee last year. He showed his commitment in practice and then finally got a shot. More likely though there is something more serious going on. There is a reason Columbus tossed him away for just a 3rd rounder. The coaching staff has access to far more information than us. I want players on this team who are going to work hard, deeply care about the organization, and be true professionals. If Filatov doesn't want to be that then he can rot in the KHL. This organization might very well be his last chance and he knows it. Hopefully he's working hard in practice and will earn his shot to return to the lineup eventually. The fact that he's not in tonight though isn't looking good.

For those of us who have followed you from afar and have not met either yourself or the gentleman from Wisers... How will we know we found you?

Will you be wearing Sens Jerseys?

for those asking about silfverberg, i found footage of the hit http://www.hockeyligan.se/elitserien-arena/37867/highlights/ first video tab at the 2:00 mark. also in the NHL that hit is probably a suspension, in the SEL i dont even think it a minor penalty

Gotta love the opening commerical, those swedes are too funny. The hit didn't look that vicious, but it's one of those plays you would like to see taken out of the game for sure.

Yeah it's the same reason he didn't make Team Canada. They wanted to make it an even ground for when they face the world. Having Puempel anywhere on the ice would cause too many goal opportunities so there was no alternative.

Well there ya go, thx for clarifying the subject of a spear. Ovie did not stab Neil, was more of a back swing with the whole blade hitting Neil.

Can someone start a petition to put Filatov on the first or second line?

I'm dead serious, if there's something going on we don't know, tell us, or put him in the lineup.. it's that simple. We are fans and this is what we (I believe) want to see.

It is so frustrating to see him wasted. Maybe we can all send him a sympathy card on behalf of Sens fans.

Wrong Took,
he got pounded right in front of us on a clean hit from Neil, he was clearly pissed and was prime for the dreaded retaliation penalty. Anyone who has ever played the game knows there is little padding in the midsection, and he pointed his blade directly to Niel's midsection area.
In the slow motion replay it was even more obvious, but had it been reversed, where Neil was hit by Ovie, and right after Ovie goes down, Neil would have been out of the game.
I guarentee it, and that proves how shit our reffing is!

Man I'm sick of seeing those same lines as much as everyone else. If this is the 3rd game Filatov sits in the pressbox, don't even bother demoting him to Bingo. Let him go to the KHL on his own. Enough with dicking around with him. I'd be pissed too. How is he worse than Butler? That's the weakest top 6 forward in the NHL and that's not being fair to Foligno. But it's ok. Only 2 more years before our top 9 will be 1st rounders. Think you know who I'm referring to.

The 'spear' made contact.. therefore a 5 min match penalty plus a game misconduct SHOULD have been called. You don't think a 5 min PP -- plus not having Ovechkin on the ice could not affect the game? Not saying the Sens would have won... but it would have been a different game.

Dave Schreiber was on the Team 1200 this morning. He was sitting in the pressbox last night next to Bill McCreary. McCreary made note of the bad call.. went to the refs room during intermission to point it out. Apparently the refs went to Neil afterwards and apologized. Way too litte, too late.

I sort of disagree with your last comment. I think it's a huge improvement on what generally goes on which is to sweep it under the carpet, circle the wagons and pretend it never happened.

No sport has perfect officiating, even those that have far more video replay and more comprehensive review procedures than the NHL. Hockey is a fast game and calls get missed. I think it's huge for the referee of any sport to come out and say I made a mistake. If that happens respect for the official increases rather than decreases.

However the non-call was huge. How many of us watching figured that Ovechkin was going to do SOMETHING after that hit. At least one official should have been focused on the pair after the hit whilst they were skating away, if fans could work out something was going to happen they should been able to as well.

I saw it in slow motion and full speed over and over.
Because a penalty was not called Ovie gets off scott free, they will spew that Ovie has not done it in the past so free pass.

I have to agree with others though, what else is new we should be used to crap calls and no calls.

It is more interesting Carkner is ready to come back in the mix, looking forward to see how he plays being out as long as he has, bingo stint aside.

we are much less likely to get the no1 pick in 2013 than we are to get it for 2012.

we will be better in every aspect of the game - the younger players we have now will have one more year of experience, we will have lost at least one of the defensive liabilities we have this season and we should welcome 1 or possibly two of our forward prospects as full time NHL players.

if you want those picks you best hope the lottery gods are looking out for us

I was at the game, and saw the great hit from Niel on Ovie,
and I did not take my eyes off off the two after the hit b/c you knew Ovie did not like the hit.
From behind them I knew exactly what Ovie was doing, but have to admit that it looked like Neil was ebellishing, so worst case is 2 and 2. But to give the only 2 to Neil really does stink of blatant unfairness, and now that I see it in slow motion, it was a horrible act by Ovie!
The refs in the NHL are bad, but the fact that they are not held accountable b/c it is a fast game, or they try to even it up, don't piss them off, they will put the whistle away, this speaks to the bush league mentality the NHL has to its reffing, and what fans have to put up with
I remember a quote from Jerry Glanville a NFL coach when a ref made a bad call ONCE
"Brutal call...This is the NFL, which stands for Not For Long if you keep making calls like that"
that says it all!
Wish the NHL took that attitude

MacKinnon is eligible for the draft in 2013 -- same as Sean Monahan of the 67's... either one I would take in a heartbeat. Question is... does Murray trade more vets at the deadline.. making this team really less experienced and much younger next season -- will they then get a shot at either of those two?

If not Yakupov.... then certainly Filip Forsberg...

Probably preaching to the choir here, but...

This idea that Neil is somehow guilty of diving because he looked in the direction of the referee is absurd.

1) If you are standing on the street minding your own business, and you know there is a cop standing on the other side of the street, then all of a sudden someone comes up and punches you in the stomach. Do you not look at the cop to see if he is going to do anything?

2) Neil didn't look at the ref purposely, watch the replay. He took the spear and his face instantly twists in agony, he falls to his knees, and then his head turns to the side. Which just happens to be the direction of the ref. As a matter of fact, from the replay, best I can tell, his eyes are closed.

P.S. Kerry Fraser's comments are idiotic. Since when is he known as a diver?

I love Neiler and will defend him to the death, but part of his role is to draw penalties. That's what Fraser was talking about. I've watched Neil live a million times and he's great at getting into a scrum but letting the other guy get caught throwing the last punch.

I don't agree that it should have come into play here though as the spear was pretty obvious. But Neil does always make sure the refs see him get hit when he does - and that's fine, that's what his job is (or one of his jobs). Given that the ref's choices were to call 5 and a game on Ovie, 2 on Neil or both, the ref should have opted for no call if he thought Neil was diving since he has no way to be certain. If the "spear" had missed and the ref clearly saw it miss then fine, otherwise you can't just call the dive.

MM9 is half the price (roughly), zero attitude problems, a complete two-way player etc, etc.

Ottawa needs a winger bad! Michalek and Alfredsson are great. However Alfredsson has 1-2 seasons left after this one. I really like Greenings game (he just needs to start shooting more like he was at the start of the year, when he was producing) Aside from those 3 Butler has been invisible, daug is a pk guy (3rd-4th line grinder) as is condra. neil is a diver. Filatov has been talked about to much and foligno is now a center.

next year we add zibanejad and silfverberg, i know both are naturally centers but i can see 1 if not both play winger for a big chunk of the season. regin comes back soon and he might be on the wing if folgino keeps this up. then add any prospect that can crack the line up possible

Send Rundblad to the A. I've said it so many times this season but of course the stache isnt making logical decisions. He's a great coach but come on, instead of wasting Rundblad's time sitting in the press box some nights and have him play like crap. JUST SEND HIM TO THE AHL! Also Butler instead of filatov? It's not one game. It's a trend.

Actually it's a rebuild. I don't get upset when guys are pissed and illogical during a game though. Go ahead and scream at players and say they suck if that's your mental makeup. But tomorrow when the sun comes up remember it's a rebuild. We don't need to win now, we don't even need to play well now - we need to develop players throughout the entire season. Filatov won't dry up sitting out a few games, Spezza will get inspired when the team is ready to go win a bunch of games etc, etc.

He ain't ready yet.

SMH at Maclean. Letting a struggling rookie take a crucial shot in a game like this was the WORST decision you could make. Condra, Smith, Greening, Winchester I would have chosen over fucking Rundblad.

Funny how everyone here is apparently a more qualified NHL coach than Paul MacLean. Even without seeing these guys in practice or even being in the arena you can determine a better fourth shooter in the shoot-out. I hope you'll all remember to hook me up with tickets when you're coaching in the NHL.

And you have never stated your own opinion?!

Anyways..Hope Gonch can play sat night...Carks has been out for a while and needs to be eased back in or else we will jump on him like Kuba last year. Rather have Carks replace rundblad or lee for a game than have him fill in for Gonch...

i didnt watch the whole game, but which senator fizzled out to cause the devils to catch up?

p.s. good on cowen to shove kovalchuk after his dirty hit on michalek. this guy is going to be an uber-stud for the sens one day very very soon.

also...maclean needs to start planning future shootouts such that if auld has started he puts anderson in for the shootout because man, auld just stood there for each goal. parise's goal was a joke, that five hole was just ATROCIOUS..it was more like a tunnel.

0 #264 Andrews Theory 2011-12-08 22:31
on a positive note, that was one of lee's better games and Cowen is looking as though he's our # 1 on the backend.

as for Rundblad, pretty sure Maclean and Rundblad himself are aware of some of the poor plays he's made recently, that's the genius in throwing him out, he either redeems himself or further validates that he may need some conditioning in Bingo. He can't say he hasn't been given any opportunities.

Rundblad could be sick in the shoot out and choked.

It was an odd choice but anyone else could have missed just the same.

Does everybody already forget how we all had a bonner for Rundblad after watching the youtube highlight video where it shows him schooling goaltenders in shootouts, and I'm sure they practice shootouts in practice and I'm sure Rundblad is one of the best on the team.

Here's a reminder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5gGQUcVItc

To reply to HQ question, IMO the two shorthanded goals which originated by Spezza turnovers were what caused and started the comeback for the Devils and if it wasn't for our fearless captain Alfie we would've never tied the game up to get atleast a point. I dont know who should be captain when Alfie retires but I definitly dont think Spezza deserves it untill he learns to be more of a two way player which probably will never happen.

Dear Mr. Shanahan,

How does it feel to be the biggest hypocrite in the league and in professional sports? How can you look at yourself in the mirror?

For the long term safety of players and for the benefit of restoring some degree of integrity to the NHL, when will you resign from your post?

Yours truly,
Fully Disgusted.

- That wasn't a good game. Up 3-0, giving it all away, then stealing a point. McLean can't be happy.

- Alex Auld gives up alot of rebounds and is no good in shootouts.

- Glad I picked up Foligno in my fantasy pool last week.

- Jesse Winchester must feel good tonight.

- Pretty sure Rundblad shouldn't have been shooting there, but oh well, what do I know?

- Shanahan is a joke. I miss Colin Campbell, and that's saying something.

- Next game, bring on Vancouver.
