  • Spezza Ready to Return

(UPDATE 2:21 PM)- Paul MacLean has confirmed what has been speculated the last couple days- Jason Spezza is ready to return to the Ottawa Senators line up.  The Sens number one centre has been out of the line up since January 27.  A huge boost for this team as they return to Scotiabank Place for Game 3.

Game Day- Anderson Starts in TO

Not much good to take from last night's game in Buffalo.

The Senators got behind early and never really seemed to recover after that. The end result was an ugly 5-1 final that sent the Sens to their fifth straight loss.  No time to dwell on the loss though as Ottawa is right back at it in Toronto tonight.

Despite getting pulled early in last night's contest, Craig Anderson will be back between the pipes for the Senators tonight.  Anderson has been decent this season but needs to be better if Ottawa is going to stay competitive.

I like the decision by Paul MacLean to go back to him tonight.

MacLean will also make a change on the back end.  Brian Lee will draw back in for David Rundblad.  The rookie defenceman played over 15 minutes last night and finished the game a -1.  Seems pretty clear that MacLean is hoping to stabilize things defensively.

No changes expected up front as Chris Neil will miss his second straight game.  Word is Neil has an ankle sprain but there is no timeline on his return at this point in time.

Here is how the Sens are expected to line up...

Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-DaCosta-Alfredsson
Daugavins-Smith-Condra
Konopka-Winchester-Butler

Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Cowen-Gonchar

Tonight's game can be seen on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.  Puck is scheduled to drop just after 7:00 PM but with the Hall of Fame ceremonies pregame, expect the start to be delayed.

Hate the decision to sit Rundblad for Lee again. During the Rangers game when Rundblad was playing with Cowen they looked incredible together even though they got scored on the pressure they were generating was amazing. Lee doesn't generate squat. Just tries not to get scored on like Kuba. Hes just slightly better at it.

Thanks for the update Chirp. I rather they went with seven defensemen instead of sitting Rundblad. Thanks for the update on Neil, I hope he will be back soon. Go Sens Go!!!

i know im probably going to take a lot of heat for this, but over the past week or so ive been thinking that rundblad should go down to bingo for roughly 5-10 games. his confidence seems to be lower than earlier in the season. he isnt moving as agressivly as earlier in the year, just seems to be thinking too much. i dont see how bingo time can do anything but help him out. many good players have to do it. just look at our team. spezza had to do it as a rookie (although he played most of the year there 43games and 33 in ottawa). karlsson had to do it too (played 12 games). and it can really help clear the logjam for a few weeks especially since carkner is coming back soon.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun is saying that Craig Anderson could lose his Number 1 role if his play does not improve quickly. He says that the Sens could turn to Alex Auld or Robin Lehner more often. Are you hearing the same thing? Thank you.

Bruce Garrioch is full of crap. How many times does Muirray have to say that Lehner will be playing the full season in Bingo unless somebody gets injured.

I agree that Rundblad could well see some time in Bingo, but I think they'll wait until Carkner is back from injury;

Had the most random thought. I became somewhat worried about our future prospects. I just hope that Noesen, Zibanejad and Puempel don't ever have to be used as bottom 6 and eventually be traded. I would hate for any of them to pull a Ribeiro or any other player who found almost immediate success after being dealt to another team. Detroit almost drafted Puempel and alongside Datsyuk would've been quite a deadly line. Almost half a year since draft and still to this day very happy and fortunate to have pulled that move for an impressive third 1st round pick.

Garrioch just throws in trade rumours and controversies to try and boost his circulation numbers. Give him another coupld of months and he'll be suggesting that Spezza is unhappy and is likely to be traded. After all he's written that story for the last 5 seasons, I don't see why this year will be any different.

so prince and puempel both have had a chance to win player of the week and pageau and stone both have won that title too and even player of the month. so that made me worry whats going on with noesen. went looked into it. so he was under a ppg for first 12 games of year and was injured for part of year but glad to hear, last night noesen got 1g 3a and is back to past ppg now at 16points in 15games.
in other words, nothing but positive things to say about our prospects.

I hate Garrioch, such a TOOL!

Anyway I'm not too happy Blads is sitting again, but P Mac's the coach.

I don't think many of you will agree but I think Colin Greening has done his time on the first line. (its kind of starting to remind me Bochenski's preseason a few years back) Give BB16 a shot again, he hasn't played all that much with Spezza so far this year, and no one forgets lasy tear. Better offensively than Greener, not to take anything away from him, he just needs to start shooting the puck more.

I don't know about any other people's opinion on this, but I'll say Todd White and Vanner are ok on the Team 1200, but that Murray Wilson is TERRIBLE on the post game show.

Nice to see Gonch finally scored last night!

Go Sens Go!

I'm actually all for the slow progression with our young guys (Spezza comparison is a good one). I think it depends more on their mentality that none of us could know, but I don't mind seeing Rundblad sit every once in a while this season. Same for Filatov going down or any of the other young players taking it slow.

Not sure the contract ramifications (if any) of sending Rundblad down for a stretch but maybe when Carkner is healthy they'll give Rundblad and Cowen each a stint in Bingo to play big minutes?

Greening is everything you could want from a player. He's making the most of a leser amount of talent than some through hard wrok, sacrifice to the team ethic and doing what the coach wants. Butler has floated around and produced nothing. Greening creates space and goes to the net.

You don't need to throw your best 3 players on the top line, you get the best combination.

I'll be at the game tonight - and all I can ask for is a full team 60minute effort ..... And a WIN!

As per Murry Wilson, I used to live next door to him before he got divorced from Jackie Turpan (her father owns the car dealerships) and moved away. My impression of him was a big ego that was always attempting to live in his past glory years with the cup winning Habs. I ran into him years later and attempted to say 'hi' and he acted like a total dick to me.

Anyways, I really think Anderson has fallen victim to exhaustion due to his new born at home. Maybe the extended road trip will do him some good and allow him to get a good nights sleep!

Probably gonna take some heat for this as well, but I am all for sending Runbland down to Bingo for a quick stint.

I am a huge Runbland fan, but he's just not ready right now, needs a few tweaks here and there. If everyone remembers correctly, King Karlsson was sent down his rookie year for a dozen games or so and when he came back you noticed the differences in his own zone as well as his decision making.

Runbland just can't make a decision it seems when he's in his own end. The Rangers giveaway shifted the momentum in a big way as well as last night's 4th goal where he kicked it right back to the Buff forward.

Give Lee and Philly a shot together tonight and let's get back into the WIN column!
Go Sens Go!!!!!!!!

As said before, I'd have no problem with Rundblad being sent down to Bingo and I agree about his mistake versus the Rangers but lst night had nothing to do with him.

The Senators never had any momentum to shift to Buffalo and the 4th goal had less to do with Rundblad trying to make the best of a terrible situation than it did with Chris Phillips letting a Buffalo player waltz right past him as he waved him along.

Though I don't think Rundblad is the weak link on this team, I do agree with sending him down for a bit, so that he can be called back up in peak form. If he was the only rookie I think it would be a lot easier on him and the team, the problem is that so many players are either in their rookie or sophomore season and the veterans are having trouble finding the same page as them on several plays. Not laying blame 1 way or the other, I just think it might be best for everyone involved right now.

0 #20 jakester 2011-11-12 14:59
Let Anderson and Auld carry the load - If a team really needs a goalie at the trade deadline then maybe we ship out Anderson - as we fully know Lehner will be ready next year. Thats how you get rid of a long contract(its not an expensive one!). Let's just develop our young players this year. We aren't going to make the playoffs(unless we get lucky) - but I love watching the games they are entertaining. We outwork the other team 90% of the time. Two years will be tough then in the third year 2013-2014 we'll be back in the playoffs and will put a scare into some teams.

seriously, they will give andy a chance to bounce back.
he had a bad season in Col last year and managed to finish off fine.

It's not like we want wins. If we get one more top 5 pick, like Tookie keeps saying, it will be better for our team in the long run. It sucks right now because leaf and hab fans will chirp us for a while. But when we are contending in 2-3 years with 6 defensive studs, 2 real top 6 forwards (alfie long gone sadly) and Kramer ankering the 3rd line people will cry when they play us. Not to mention Lehner in nets and Andy as the backup.

Cherish the opportunity to get low in the standings while we don't stand a chance and know we dont stand a chance. When are team gets good, we wont be losing, right now our team is too young for any of this too matter.

5-4 Sens tonight! GO SENS GO.

Greening is the physical edge to that top line. The player that will go to the dirty areas to get the puck or go to the front of the net. No way Butler does that.

Rundblad was a -1 last night. Kuba & Karlsson were -3...

So where is the logic at sitting Rundblad... try Kuba.

On Yost's article (I believe) a few teams had scouts at the game last night... hope they weren't looking at Sens players..

To coach McLean... never, never, never, never have Phillips & Gonchar paired together.

Anderson needs to be better if the Sens have a chance of winning games.

Hoping for a bounceback game...bury those bloody Leafs.

If we're going to win even one game on this road trip (which I doubt we will) I hope it's tonight. The Leafs are about 3-4 losses away from being out of a playoff spot and they go on the road a lot til the end of the month. Would be great to take 2 points away from them tonight

There are anywhere from 2-12 scouts at every NHL game in the East, this is not unusual. Most area scouts that live in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa do a circuit. They cover usually go to DET, TOR, BUFF, MTL, TOR, OTT and travel to Bingo, Syracuse and Glens Falls. There were a dozen here for the Ranger game. Ask yourself how many trades and roster moves are made on an ongoing basis. Most scouts are there to literally view team strategies. Closer to deadline time they are more apt to study individual players. After the deadline they ae checking minor and pro free agents.

Sandy c'mon. You know as well as the rest of us that they're not going to sit the vets. There's no need (we aren't winning anything this year) and it's a bad organizational message (even though I agree there's a right time to do it).

If we were a playoff team this season then yes, sit Kuba (though he's been better of late) but we're not. So bring Rundblad along slowly.

I think the plan with Phillips was to keep him around to show our young D what NOT to do ...

Murray dropped the ball on that 3 year deal. I dont care if you have to send the guy packin, grow a sack and do whats best for the team.

"Phillips clearly following through on coaching direction to hit more"

I'm sure 2 lazy hits to the numbers was not what the coach had in mind. How about a real body check from the "big rig"
and none of these, "im slow and out of position so Im gonna panic and get a penalty" hits

The guy's been on the ice a hell of a lot tonight, though...

#The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
There's no room
No space to rent in this town

You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere

You thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace

It's a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away

You're on the road
But you've got no destination
You're in the mud
In the maze of her imagination

You love this town
Even if that doesn't ring true
You've been all over
And it's been all over you

It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day..."

How Come TOOKIE isn't on here tonight? Leafs couldn't beat a rebuilding team on back to back nights. Pitiful. Z.Smith and Condra 2 AHL-ers did them in all night. D.Brassard would like nice as 2nd line center. Do it Murray.

I dont understand why your hating on phillips. IMO, the guy has been pretty solid for us lately. One bad game and you're all over the guy?? It's fans like you that make players not want to play in ottawa.. and it's fans like you that are the first to complain about said player leaving..

Hahaha one bad game??? welcome to watching the sens...you picked a good first game!! we won!!!

Philips has been crap for at bare minimum 2 full years

I am fairly certain most people wouldn't be at all upset if he left....we have an overabundance of young D...you will learn this after a few more games. Any of the vets that leave the better off we will be in a few years.

That goal will be one of the biggest flops of the maple leafs history (#1 Toskala bounce #2 hiring Burke #3 hiring Wilson #4 existing #5 that goal that happened today). By the way I read a newspaper article the other day and it talked about how the leafs are the most hated team in the league.

Boy am i glad you're not the GM..
It's the vets that help the young guys learn. Phillips might not be showing it on the ice every game, but he sure as hell knows what he's talking about when it comes to defence first, which will help the younger guys. I like phillips, wouldnt be THAT disapointed if he got traded, but i would prefer he never. Who steps in when he leaves? Another unproven defender? like gryba? or lee? no thank you, i will stick with phillips for the time being until someone else proves worthy. Lee has been nothing but a turnover machine.

Phillips was great tonight, with the exception of the penalties. Sensor can go sensor himself. If phillips is on the ice and the opponent doesnt score hes doing a good job baby!

The Leafs have already got their hooks into elliminating that own goal from people's memories...

From TSN:

Lupul made it 3-2 with a wraparound goal at 17:10 and the Leafs kept on coming. But Foligno and Phillips each hit the empty net to secure Ottawa's first victory since a 3-2 decision over Toronto on Oct. 30.

I don't see why Phillips is getting shit on. He worked his ass off tonight and literally saved some goals because of his effort. He was solid.

Because he doesnt score.. he must be shit..

Seriously though, i dont know either. The talk about him taking all these penalties? they guy has 6! SIX penalties in minutes this season, and 4 of them came tonight. He is a minus 2 on a team that has given up the most goals in the league so far this season, hes hitting everything that moves. But "He's taking too many penalties"..

The phillips calls were weak, did you see the leafs push Smith into the boards and NO CALL

I am not a Phillips fan but who cares, we won and won by more than 1 goal, the hate on our players is bad enough when we lose but stupid when we win, unless you are a troll.
Very odd not to be excited about the win and bitch about a player. just saying.

Didn't notice the shot of Murray. When was it?

Towards the end of the period, Cbc quickly flashed the Camera on Murray and he was with another older gentlemen working on something, they both looked serious. But you never know, they could of just been working on a crossword together LOL.. boring period of hockey

Hahaha ...I agree I rewinded the PVR and there where pretty serious and murray was going through papers

It appeared to be Nick Polano, a Senator pro scout.

Phillips wasn't THAT great (desperation diving play where it hit his stick because the Toronto guy didn't get it up, etc., etc.), calm down. Even if he was, he would need alot of those type of games to even attempt to balance the equation. If you know what I mean...

Still, Sens beat the Leafs... It was awesome watching the game with my leaf buddy in attendance.
