  • Welcome to the Canadian Tire Centre

The Ottawa Senators have called a press conference for 10:00 AM this morning where it is expected they’ll announce a new partner and a name for the building once known as Scotiabank Place.

And while the reports have yet to be “confirmed”, some good detective work by a couple SensChirp readers leads us to believe the new sponsor is Canadian Tire and the building will be renamed The Canadian Tire Centre.  Plenty of reaction to the new name around these parts yesterday but the reality is it’s a good Canadian company now associated with the Ottawa Senators brand.

Game Day- Rangers/Sens From SBP

The Ottawa Senators play their last home game until late November, tonight when they play host to the New York Rangers.

This is the first time the two teams have met since Wojtek Wolski sidelined Daniel Alfredsson with an elbow to the head.  Neither player will be in the line up tonight.

The good news for Sens fans is Alfredsson was on the ice with his teammates at the morning skate and really seems to be progressing well.  He passed all his baseline tests and could potentially make the trip with the team on Friday.  Would be fitting that the Captain make his return on 11/11/11.

Meanwhile, the Sens will be looking to snap a three game losing streak with a surging Rangers team in town.  New York comes into this one having won four straight.

One change to the Ottawa line up as David Rundblad will draw back in and take the place of Brian Lee.  Same look up front with the exception of Nikita Filatov who was returned to Bingo.  Konopka takes that spot.  Here is how the Sens lined up at the morning skate.

Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-Da Costa-Butler
Daugavins-Smith-Neil
Winchester-Konopka-Condra

Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
Phillips-Rundblad

Craig Anderson gets the start for the home side while the Rangers will counter will Henrik Lundqvist.  All the action can be seen live on TSN starting at 7:30 or streamed on the radio at Team1200.

Great to finally have a game day again! I look for another hard fought game between these two, and expect Spezza to get back to that extra gear on offense. Hopefully someone puts Gaborik through the boards as a little payback, not a headshot, just a nice clean knockout blow.

3-2 for the Sens.

GO SENS GO!!!

I don't mind. I often get them mixed up and it helps to have people correct. Obviously not a huge difference but want to make sure I have the proper line up.

Will be at the game hopefully we win tonight. Comparing the lineups is scary seeing the rangers all stars... Avery is playing which is sometimes entertaining to watch.. Spezza and Mr. Anderson will need a good effort for us to have a chance to win... GO SENS GO Thanks SENS CHIRP for posting the line up.

@AFM,

I do not correct him, unless it is not correct.
FTI, he thanked me for giving him the heads up a few days ago

So why are you so picky ??

The lineup usually comes from Ian Mendes, and he makes the same error from the get go .

True... our Second line, really would have a tough time making a 3rd line on most NHL teams.
Admittedly was a huge Butler fan last year, but really disappointed in him so far this year.
Rather give the Daug a shot with Foligno and DaCosta.
Important game for Butler, if Alfie comes back Friday, right now I say Butler sits and Daug stays in... unless he lights it up tonight...IMO

Zenon Konopka is still a little pissed off about Wojtek Wolski's elbow on Daniel Alfredsson:

"We lost our captain. Our captain's still not in the lineup. I look right across every morning and see (the name) Alfredsson. I usually see his gear hanging there, and that bugs me. Right or wrong, if he was hurt legally, illegally, whatever way you want to explain it, our captain's out of our lineup, and that's a big blow to our team, and I look at that every day and that drives me up a wall, and it pisses me off."

you know what, I was listening to Jason York last night and it got me thinking, it was a great comeback, and not to take anything away, cause I loved it, but sometimes sending a message is just as good as the 2 points, and they took out Alfie with a "Dirty" hit!

I don't want to burst anyones bubble regarding Konopka exacting revenge for the hit on Alfie, and I do admire Konopka's attitude, but, have you noticed that Konopka doesn't actually WIN many fights? He's always ready and willing, but he's definitely a hanger-oner...
I have seen what Tookie gets when he offers up an opinion that differs from the norm, so I will expect the same backlash...but seriously, watch his (Konopka, not Tookie) next few fights. And yes, he could kick the crap out of me, but I'm about as tough as grade 3 arithmetic...

I wouldn't worry about too much about the backlash. People pick on tookie not because of his point of views, but because he has a very "troll-like" way of voicing his opinion.

I agree with many of his points, but disagree with the way he usually writes his posts. I guess his mother never gave him enough attention :(

To prove this point further; I'll agree with him right now. King Henry will decide the outcome of the game tonight. I on the other hand, am more excited to see if the Sens can pick-up their power-play, and see if Rundblad and the boys can give us some entertaining offense

Hate to say it, but 3-2 Rangers (we're getting in penalty trouble tonight unless PMac can cool some heads haha)...boo!!!

Sorry Sandy but probably the best thing long term for this organisation is have tonight be a "revenge" night. Too many times I have seen teams take liberties at Alfredsson and Spezza without having teamates jump in. What Konopka is doing is showing our young guys that they are a family and if you go after our captain ... we'll go after yours. Hit Callahan hard and often boys. GO SENS

I agree with this completely, how many times have we seen Alfie in the past couple years get belted, legal or not and nobody defends him, mind boggling, sure winning the game is important but its only 1 game, you have 81 more to play...

Im not saying crosscheck everyone in the face, but fight, hit and fight, dont let them get away with it.

Bell nailed Alfie, Spezza went after him, lol, come on...nothing after that...

Adams nails Alfie, Michalek goes after him....come on...nothing after that...

You're right. Especially this year, when they are not expected to compete for a playoff spot, I would think it would be more important than ever to, at least, establish a strong team identity, and gain a reputation of being a bunch of guys who stick up for one another. Don't initiate crap, but, for sure, respond to it.

We also need a little Nastiness on the back end, A la Pronger type. I think Cowen can become that needed nastiness but can still play. Love how the kid is playing with the Big club and he'll just get better with age. Just like wine. I'm getting thirsty here.

There you go, 82 games is a long season and a team needs to get wins in different ways. Some days you win by skill, some just by brut force. Tonight is one of those games. If I'm Pauly Mac I'm insisting on EVERYONE finishing they're checks, even Spezza. No curling away. After tonight it's a 6 game road trip, no better way to bring a team together than to have it win a bruising game together. They need to learn to win games this way also.

It pretty much equals out now that they sent Kaberle for Colbourne and a pick last year.

The point was Kessel is leading the league, what can you say about that?

haha I tell ya one thing, that Kessel trade looks a lot better now for the Leafs than it did two years ago. As good a player as Kessel is, I think long term Boston still wins that trade.

Boston obviously wasn't missing Kessel when they won the cup last spring, and Seguin is leading their team in points with 15 points in 13 games. Dougie Hamilton is going to be a great defenceman one day, I'm excited to watch him play in the WJ's this year.

Don't forget the third player Boston drafted from the 2nd round pick they recieved as well, Jared Knight who could become a pretty good player one day as well.

Kessel is an awesome player, but I think Boston still won that trade. Either way, I guarantee neither team regrets making that deal/

GO SENS

What they should have done is jump on Wolski AFTER the hit... but no one did anything. Who are they going after then? Gaborik or Richards?

I'm not saying they should not play a hard physical game.. but to go out and do a dirty hit.. is not beneficial to the team.... and it might just come back with a dirty hit on Michalek or Spezza.

Hit them hard but clean.... just not stupid.

Oh and Greening will fight....

Agreed - it should have been taken care of at the time or at least during that game (but remember ZK was already gone).

Nothing wrong with hit (cleanly) first and ask questions later tonight though, but we can't have any sort of "revenge" BS going on. The problem is that they don't react at the time when refs are more inclined to let the players police themselves. I have to think that if a big scrum and a couple of fights had broken out after the Wolski hit that the penalty might have been more severe and Shanny would have reacted differently (i.e. supsension). It just would have drawn more focus to how bad the hit was.

Personally unless you are getting a better goalie, I would not downgrade Stamkos to Pavelski or Staal. Kopitar maybe, but Pavelec isn't a huge upgrade over Mason. As long as this is not a keeper league too. If you could get/counter with Kopitar and Anderson for Stamkos, Mason (maybe even Enroth too) then I'd say go for it.

Wait? I think this isn't a 1 time exact revenge type of situation. That hit by Wolski should make the Rangers-Sens matchup quite physical for the remainder of all their games this year and possibly carryover into the future. Hell our Philly games still get scrappy and the source of that conflict is years in the past.

I'd like to see Butler start playing on Spezza's right side. I really don't find Spezza and Michalek have that much chemistry with one another . They indeed both score but not because of being linemates(in comparison to Spezza/Butler last season). And I remember in the perseason Michalek and Da Costa played fairly well togehter. Might benefit the team.

It should've been a 2-1 victory had Gonchar not made that sweet pass to Stepan. Rundblad according to TSN lead the team in giveaways. Spezza constantly thinks he can bypass through skaters and coughs up the puck every time he tried it. All of this shit is making Kuba get off scott free because even he wasn't that bad tonight in comparison to the rest of the team. I think this is exactly the type of game we can expect this year. A good effort with lots of promise, but ultimately a loss because of turn overs and rookie mistakes. The latter will diminish along with the percentage of rookies on the roster. If the playoffs seem unlikely, isn't an entertaining game that doesn't jeopardize a lottery position exactly what we are looking for?

We already knew all that. We have all season.

Gonchar/Kuba will be gone soon enough, Rundblad is a kid, Spezza is Spezza (he's not going to change).

You can't say it should have been 2-1, because as soon as one event happens, it changes the sequence of events for everything thereafter. They made a movie about it, called the Butterfly Effect.

There are going to be nights like this with this team, if you aren't prepared to live with it, there's a good chance you will be driven crazy by season's end.

Welcome to the rebuild.

To be fair, there weren't to many times this game where I thought "Wow, if he just got by that player". It was like, "What are you thinking?".

He's also got to stop skating himself into the corner. The opposition must expect it by now, because I do.

It's crazy how small the margin is between wins and losses. it doesn't even seem like we have lost 4 in a row because for the most part, the games have all been exciting and close. Minus a few key mistakes and this would have been our game.
That was a ridiculous effort by DaCosta in the final minutes when he was batting the puck and dodging players. If he scored there, I thinking that would have been up for highlight of the year. Well, you win some you loss some...loving the effort though!

Jared Cowan is the sens best d-man and one of their most consistent players after only playing his first 16 NHL games. tonights performance solidifies it, I'm going with cowan on my new O jersey! what a gamer to go against Deveaux. I can't believe Ottawa has Karlsson, Rundblad AND Cowan. we will be unbeatable in a few short years.

That was a tough loss to take. outplayed them almost the entire game, they just capitalized on rookie mistakes.

It is time for FILITOV TO PLAY and it should be WITH SPEZZA. Butler is doing squat with this opportunity he's been given. shake up the lines a bit and get Filitov with Spezza please. At least on the power play for cryin out loud.

Great job by Cowen to regain momentum for the team. 20 yrs old and taking a goon on and getting in a few good shots. This kid will only get bigger and nastier. Just what we need. That's leadership qualities right there. Overall terrible decision making all night. One of those nights and still managed to make it a game. Really liked PM putting Foligno, DaCosta and Michalek for a shift in the third. Ride the hot guys.
Lost 4 staight... hitting that wall... are we back on the FAIL4NAIL posts yet ? Lol

Has anyone else noticed that Greening has taken a step backward the last few games, at least offensively? Seeing as they are on a 4 game losing streak, why not try someone new, like Foligno, on the LW with Spezza and Michalek?
And like I said yesterday, Gonchar hurts this team more than he helps it.

Isn't tonight the Subway Russia Series @ Civic Centre. Yakupov, Namestikov, Kohklachev vs Puempel, Toffoli, Ceci, Monahan. Are Prince and Noesen on the OHL team ?

Props to Cowen for showing some emotion last night. I'm really hoping that it doesn't happen to often because we need him on the ice and not in the penalty box. We can't afford to have him risk injury. A good 2-3 fights a year from him would be swell, but no more.

Love DaCosta. I can't wait to see this guy once we're deep into the rebuilding process (in a few years)

I'm not sure why fans are getting upset about last nights loss. As a few others have mentioned, last nights game was a perfect representation of how rebuilding teams play (turn-overs, missed oppertunities, etc).

Props to Patrick 2.0 for his 3-2 Rangers pick.

Since Greening was hit in the Buffalo game.. I assume he is still feeling the affects. After all, he is basically still a rookie player and will have off nights. Also without Alfie in the lineup... all the opposing teams are keying on the Spezza line -- and all 3 of those players have to cope with that... It's about adjustment for Greening...
