Game Day- Sens Shoot for 4th Straight

The Ottawa Senators will go in search of their fourth straight victory when the Florida Panthers visit Scotiabank Place tonight.

The Sens will get a boost as Daniel Alfredsson will return to the line up after missing one game with a hip flexor issue.  Great sign to see him miss just the one game and it really doesn't sound like a serious issue for the Captain.

The team provided an update on Peter Regin this morning and it sounds a little more positive than originally thought.  Rather than opt for surgery. Regin will go the rehab route instead and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.  I get the sense it could be longer than that depending on how the rehab goes.

With Regin on the shelf and Zibanejad headed back to the SEL, Paul MacLean will be looking for someone to step up and assume the second line centre position.

First crack at that position will go to Stephane Da Costa as he will line up with Foligno and Alfredsson tonight.  Da Costa found his way on to the fourth line after some questionable defensive play but he gets another shot starting tonight.

Here is how the lines are expected to look.

Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-Da Costa-Alfredsson
Daugavins-Smith-Neil
Winchester-Konopka-Condra

Cowen-Gonchar
Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Rundblad

Bobby Butler is ready to return from his groin injury but is a healthy scratch tonight. On the back end, Brian Lee will once again look on from the press box.  With the club winning and looking much better defensively, this is a tough time for MacLean to make a switch.

Craig Anderson will make the start in the Ottawa goal.

Still plenty of tickets left for this one so if you're looking to catch the game tonight, get in touch with Mike McCarthy at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The game is available on SportsnetSens or on the radio on Team1200

Cannot wait to watch tonight. With Anderson more comfortable, the NHL's #1 PP and the guys playing better all around, I think tonight we can break out offensively!!

Hope to see Da Costa and 'The Dog' get some goals in tonight's 5-0 win!!

Also, hope the Zebras had their latest eye exam!

Would love to Butler back in on the 4th. Although, after Konopka's goal... might be hard to take him out. He has been playing very well lately.

Shitty part is with the play of our 'D' lately, not sure how Lee is going to get back in...

It's tough to see Lee in the press box but I hope he sees that it's not the same as last year. And no matter if win the next 10 straight they need to cycle him in there sooner than later to show that. Have Gonchar take and "aches and pains" day or something or give Rundblad a "watch the game from above" day or two as part of his learning curve.

Whatever it takes to make sure Lee A) doesn't get rusty and B) knows that he's part of our plans for the future.

Daugavins played well enough on Tuesday to deserve another game rather than rushing Butler back as well. I expect they'll send him back down after tonight's game unless he scores 2 or something crazy with the message "thanks for the great work on your call up".

Should be an intersting game tonight. I often fear when Ottawa plays the Panthers because you never know what club is coming out that night and they aren't off to a bad start. Add in Markstrom who's on a hot streak, Ottawa will need to push heavy in the shots dept. We'll need 3 solid periods tonight.

I have to bring this up, because the focus of last years deal moving Elliot out of Ottawa was considered a MASSIVE win for Ottawa. But damn, who would have thought Elliot would steal the show from Halak this year registering 4 of the 5 wins they have this season with a staggering .950 save % and 1.59 GAA, including that shutout over Vancouver last night. Don't get me wrong, we all know he's had some shining moments in Ottawa, but this was a big surprise. I'm happy he's found himself again.

@tookie from previous post regarding
@Tookie,
sigh...fart :)
again with the kick Regin when he is down comments.
so based on your reasoning, you must have been part of the
"what a bad trade for Michalek" after he had knee surgery
"lets ged rid of him" clan,
and no I am not saying you said this, but many were in the camp, that he was not that good and injury prone
well I for one am very glad we kept Michalek,
and is proving to be a top line NHLer,
just like I hope Regin can come back to when healthy.
Get back soon Regin and prove Tookie wrong...again :)

Who would have thought that the Sens would have the leagues best PP -- and the 29th best PK?

The Sens usually had a much better PK than PP.

Should be noted... Dave Cameron runs the PP...

it's been covered on numerous occassions but you gotta think a deal is coming to move out one of gonchar, kuba or lee. when carkners back it'll get even more complicated.

while i dont see lee having the upside of our other d, he's certainly proven to be capable of taking a regular shift at this level. if he isnt in our lineup fulltime by december I think he'll be in someone elses. gotta think the oilers would have an interest in Lee as well as a few other young teams...

I hope we keep him since he isn't a UFA for two more years and we know Kuba, and most likely Carkner are gone next year. He has value as a #5,6 Dman.

I would prefer we keep Lee as well, but you wonder how much more patient he can be.

Also if I was another team looking for a dman and I came to Ottawa, Lee is the one that has the best chance of being moved right now.

Karlsson, Cowen and Rundblad are assets we don't want to part with. Phillips has a NMC and won't waive, Gonchar has a NMC and probably won't waive. Carkner has very limited value as does Kuba t this point. The moveable asset with the most upside is Lee.

There will be a dspot for him to take next season, but will he want to wait that long?

Something has to give. Kuba & Gonchar have been playing much better over the last several games...that may up their value... especially Gonchar's play on the PP. BUT Gonchar has a NTC.. so he would probably only go to a contender.. then which one of those have the cap room. Kuba can go anywhere they want to send him.

Tampa Bay or the Rangers would be the best team to contact to deal a player. It has been noted that the Leafs and Sens have been scouting Tampa and vice versa. Tampa can use another D man to shore up there back-end.

As for the D-men value - Carkner has good value, toughness, cheap, and 5-6 d man (hes slow though and UFA), Lee is young and has good value, Kuba is creating good value but is playing well.

I am all in for trading Carkner. What we get may not be a big return but I would consider tossing in a winger (Foligno) for a better winger in return from NYR or Tampa!

madpajamma,

You brought up an interesting point about Elliott. I've always thought he wasn't a really bad goalie but a solid goalie. The problem was that Elliott may have been thrown to the wolves due the injury issues with LeClaire. Also the media didn't help out buy throwing him under the bus quite a few times.

Another reason could've been that he may not have the ablity to handle the pressure of playing in such a hockey-crazed market like Ottawa. The fact that the downward spiral from last December on could've sap whatever mojo he had and a fresh start was needed. Add to the fact that the team and defense in Coloardo was down right garbage.

I'm happy that Elliott is off to good start in Saint Louis and hopefully he can keep it going. Also when the Blues play Ottawa this season, he starts the game and plays with a massive hip on his shoulder.

You have to think that Turris would be a nice fit in Ottawa. 22 years old and we're rebuilding. I"ve seen him play in the past and he's impressive. We have a few players we could move. Imagine Spezza+Zibby+Tu rris down the middle next year. Not too shabby. Is it just me or is RUNDBLAD starting to show us what he can do - you can tell he's getting more comfortable - I also can tell that he's itching to make the moves he made in the SEL. By game 20 he might just start pulling some tricks out of his bag. Love watching him play errors and all right now.

I live in Gatineau and for some reason, Vidéotron just doesn't want to add Sportsnet ONE to their package, thus we don't have access to Sportsnet SENS (I know it's Rogers, but come on)!

Montreal sucks, their fans are dirtbags, and anyone who thinks they should be allowed to cheer in our building should just go and become a dirty Hab-not fan as well.

Gonchar's been playing well. Rundblad playing well. Neil is a dynamo. Anderson will start to get into a groove.

i hope they trade kuba ASAP and get lee in! but my question is this: alot of people want to trade gonchar, kuba, alfredsson and a couple others. from the looks of it every one wants a young RFA or draft picks. but RFA's are cheap and have little cap hit and picks obviously have none. so how can we move out such a huge chunk of our salary without taking some back?? how much room do we have? i never understand cap/contract stuff...

Agree completely that Condra has been on RW a few times.
Winchester is clssified as a Centre, but shoots from the Right, therefore he is better suited to play RW.

And you sir are the dumbassest for not understanding that we are joking around with the troll by referencing the Kessel trade.

"By the way...anyone who thinks making the playoffs is in the beat interest of the team, unfortunately is wrong...if that happens we will have essentially become the leafs. That implies the Leafs have made the playoffs".

I know it seems like a team with Phil "Don't call me Brett Hull" Kessel HAS to make the playoffs, but alas, they find a way to fail year after year. Still though, saying making the playoffs makes them the Leafs implies the Leafs made it..

I was just about to roast Foligno for not being a 2nd line player (which I still don't think he is, he's a solid third liner), but he came through tonight. I would like to see Filatov back up though to get a crack at the top 6 again...Daugavi ns to me isn't really needed right now. If a bottom 6 guy goes out, then yeah, get him up here, but Filatov should be here too.

Number 1 PP in league
Anderson 5-2 ...getting his GAA down playing like number 1
Spezza -Top 5 scoring in League
MM9-Top 5 scoring in the League
Karlsson - 2nd place in League Scoring for Defencemen
Gonchar -7th in Scoring for dmen and Upgrade in play 100 percent

And almost 13 million in cap space

Teams like Boston NYR Van are looking too make moves do we offer are services?? And see if we can out something together ..

Ugh. Please don't tell me this is starting.

You build for the future. Enjoy the games, cheer the goals, celebrate the wins but DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES make ANY moves that make us 1% weaker in the long run.

If Murray trades away a young player, prospect or pick for someone that is not going to be EVEN BETTER in 3 years from now, I will find him and tell him he's an idiot.

Heck, even if we somehow finish first in the conference (which by the way will not happen) we should still be "sellers" at the deadline and just be overjoyed that our young team is that good already - since it WILL get better.

With tonight's NJ loss, Sens currently sit in 8th, only 2 points back from a "real" Sabres team and 3 back from a "fake" (i.e.: immnently dwindling) Laffs team.

I suspect Sens' youth movement will run out of steam around Feb-March but I'll appreciate & enjoy the playoff-bound standing while it lasts...

You just don't get it do you???? It's not that we want the Sens to get Yakupov...its that we are realistic and know that we aren't the worse team in the league. We all know we're not great (and probably aren't going to make the playoffs)...BUT WE ARE NOT THE WORST TEAM AND WILL NOT GET #1 PICK!!!! Just accept it.

You call us homers for not wanting Yakupov, we want him, we just aren't going to get him...we will draft 5-10. Are you implying we trade Spezza, Alfie, Michalek, so that we become the worst team in the league in order to get Yakupov? We will need Spezza and maybe Michalek in 4 years from now. And Alphie deserves the respect of having whatever he wants.

I just don't get what you don't understand...Ac cording to your logic, the Sens are winning game because we are cheering for them. Even if we were all eyores like yourself...they 'd still be winning. Might as well be happy for them.

Be a real fan and always stay until the end of the game no matter what...the players notice you leaving:

Quote from Greenign (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=379071)

"It was a bit of a whirlwind there," said Greening, who admitted he thought his goal would stand as the game winner. "It goes to show you have to play a full 60 minutes. I was just happy that (Foligno) pulled us out of here. I think it's really fun for the fans and a lot of people will stay to the end now."

Why is it that when this team starts winning people start talking trades and moves.

It's great that we have guys like Lee, Filatov, Parrish, Butler, O'Brien and Carkner in the minors or on the sidelines and still win games.

Make no mistake the injuries will eventually come.

With back to back games this weekend, will Anderson play both games or will Auld make a backup appearance in one of those games?

Personally, I would love to see Lehner play in Bingo Friday night and get called up to Ottawa for Sundays game against Toronto at home and start the game with Anderson backing him up.

What does Ottawa have to lose in seeing how he is coming along?

It also shows Auld that he has to start winning some games and that he's not here for a free ride as backup.

Great Win for our boys, LETS BE REALISTIC here, chances that we make the playoff are slim... the most important thing as a fan is that they keep it entertaining

Spezza stays healthy and get at least 1 ppg
Michalek actually puts 30 goals this year,
Alfie staying healty , so he can return for his final year
Runblad/Cowen continue improving
Karlsson continues to improve
Gonchar keeps it up and we trade him at the deadline.

as tong as we can get a top 3-8 pick it would be key.

On a side note who do you guys think are the 3 worst teams in the league as per their roster.

If you think about it Sens only have 2 Proven 70 point guys on their team and one of them is getting up there in age... in all honesty the roster isnt as strong as what ppl think...

playoffs are not out of the question, I agree we have lots of season left and anything can happen but at this point it is a possible for sure.

Rundblad Cowan Filatov Greening DaCost and others get confidence and play lights out and our vets Spezza Michalek Alfie Karlsson Gonchar Phillips Neil continue our present play, playoffs are a certainty.

Things have to go wrong for us to not make playoffs, plain and simple.
They have to go super wrong for us to finish in the bottom.

If you base our team on past proven we don't have much proven but every win we are proving and thats all that counts.
Past is irrelevant, the slate of the future is clean.
We are making our proven superstars now.

All the players on the Blackhawks were unproven young guys at one time and we know how that worked out.

Remember when there was actually a debate as to who was better: Heatley or Spezza?

My GOD Spezza has been impressive in the early going. When he missed that bouncing puck in the third, he was noticeably furious (head shot forward, looked like he yelled F*CK).

The drive he's been showing is phenomenal. Leading by example.

However people do need to take the Sens recent success with a grain of salt. They've beaten Minnesota, Columbus, Carolina, Winnipeg, and Florida. These are not exactly strong teams. In addition to this the scores were 4-3(SO), 4-3, 3-2(SO), 4-1, and 4-3. The Sens required a shootout to beat Minnesota and Carolina. They required multiple last second goals to beat Columbus and Florida.

Realistically the Sens have been very lucky of late. We should probably be 3-2 in those five victories. We could easily have been 1-4 if the bounces didn't go our way in overtime and the shootout aka crap-shoot. Yeah the team is winning some games against weaker opponents, but we're not exactly doing it in an impressive way.

I'm glad they are on a streak, and I don't believe they are the worst team in the league, cause Columbus is looking like they will be the worst, but playoffs are a pipe dream. As many mentioned before, we have yet to play the leagues best so let's keep the "P" word on the shelf for awhile longer....A lot longer...

would the haters quit with the "it is wrong to be happy about four straight wins?" geez, if you don't want to be happy about it fine, but be miserable on your own and keep it to yourself. yeah we get it, we are all well aware we are overachieving compared to what "should" be happening so you don't need to continue to restate the same "since we arent supposed to win we cant or shouldnt" line over and over. How any sens fan cannot be happy with four straight wins is beyond me. This could be the only chance we get all year to be happy about a win streak. Let us have that will ya? And for the record, Florida is a much better team this year than in past years. This isn't the same florida team from years past. We got four goals against a very hot goalie in Markstrom. plenty to be excited about there.
The reality is, we are in the top eight right now when everyone said we'd be 15th all year and I love it.

Great freakin game last night!

Make playoffs...dont make playoffs... finish bottom five... make playoffs as underdog, and challenge... this is what being a fan of a team is all about.
How in the hell can any fan of the Sens, take what they have done lately and turn it into a negative is really hard to understand.

Greening, like it or not is the perfect Soda, to the Vodka (Spezza) and Gin (Michalek)
he is fast, big, and most of all keeps it simple with those two offensive talents

Bottom line...new inspiring coach...young energetic determined youth up front, combined with solid veterens...tale nted young d-men... and most of all a goalie that shuts the door when he has to.
This my friends is the recipe of an extremely exciting team.
No one can predict what is in store, especially not Tookie's distorted views!
Hang on boys we are in for a wonderful ride, enjoy the ups and downs, regardless of where we land!

Tyrant,

When god opens a window, do you complain about the draft?

Every team has a stretch where they play against weaker teams. Good teams take advantage of those stretches and get points. That's what Ottawa has done.

It shouldn't matter if they were close games, or if they were won in the shootout. They won those games, and that's positive.

Did you forget that we opened in Detroit, made a comeback and scared them !

We then played Washington, and lost in a close 2-1 loss

We got destroyed by Flyers 7-2, but that was when MacLean shook this team up !

Errr...Nope. I've always been a MAJOR Spezza supporter. #1 centers are extremely hard to get, and Spezza is ours.

In your defense, there are 2 or 3 Patricks on here, you just have the wrong one.

Some teams I think we'll be better than:
1) Columbus
2) Winnipeg
3) Islanders

Teams that I think we are about even with (In other words, I'm not sure if we'll be ahead or behind in the draft):
1) Calgary
2) Minnesota
3) Phoenix
4) Florida

Personally I think we'll draft around 6th, hopefully get into the lottery and then who knows

I think this is fairly realistic. Thoughts?

Why doesn't everyone just put all the playoff, draft, winning against bottom feeders aside and just enjoy watching this team have fun on the ice.

I was at all 3 games last week and I don't remember seeing as much energy in that rink, than I did Saturday night. And that win came over CBJ. Personally, it's not always about the team your playing, but more importantly about how you play against that team. I'm sure the Fans were going just as nutz last night as they did Saturday, it sounded that way on the radio.

Watching this Sens team play every shift hard, with an urgency, is very enjoyable and makes being a fan fun. Let's hope we see that for the majority of the year.

I am happy with Bryan Murray and Coaching staff, they are doing the best they can with what we have, and its working for now... And we do not have proven players on our team its all IF... IF butler can score.. IF Filatov is the player he is supposed to be... IF Spezza doesnt get injured... IF Anderson plays like last season...

Everyteam has IF but we are one key injury away from it being a rough ride

Zibby was invisible last night. We never should have kept that kid - he belongs in the SEL for more seasoning.

Also, Volchenkov and Campoli were joining the rush too often. I counted at least 10 times where Cullen had to play the point to cover for one of them. Though at least Kelly looks 10 years younger out there.

What?

Would anybody else like to see Murray trade for Rick Nash and what do you guys think the asking price would be?

Nash playing along side Spezza would be perfect.

Ugh SF19 - this is bad even for you.

Murray is steadily building a solid TEAM here - 20 guys that can go far. We don't need to put all our eggs in two baskets (Spezza and Nash) and it would take just about every other quality guy we have to get Nash - if we were that stupid.
