Ottawa has now been outscored 14-3 in their last two home games.
There are going to be a number of rough nights for this rebuilding hockey team but they certainly making things easy on themselves. Alex Auld struggled in the first period tonight and the Flyers made him pay. The 4-0 deficit was just too much for the young Senators to overcome.
Listening to the Sens player interviews after losses, it's clear this is still a team adjusting to the new system being put in place. Paul MacLean knows exactly how he wants his team to play but it is taking the players a little more time than he would like to get on the same page.
The result has been some ugly losses.
One of the positives in this one came in the form of Erik Karlsson. He logged a ton of ice time (25:43) and picked up a couple more points. He now has 8 points in the first 6 games of the season.
The Sens held a players-only, closed door meeting after the game and according to Ian Mendes on Twitter, it sounds like the discussion focused around creating an identity for this team
They will have a chance to work on that identity on Thursday when the Winnipeg Jets visit Scotiabank Place for the first time.
- Mika Zibanejad is now 6 games into his NHL tryout. It was good to see him back at the centre ice position because he certainly looks more comfortable there than on the wing. Still get the sens Zibanejad is down to his last few games with the NHL team for this season.
- Speaking of Zibanejad, the kid took a beating from Chris Pronger tonight. Had the opportunity to sit up close tonight and it is remarkable the things Pronger gets away with on the ice. The stick work is unbelievable.
The Jets play the Leafs the night before. And the Jets are, admittedly, just as bad, if not worse than the Sens.
It's going to be a long year for the few of us Sens fans here in Winnipeg.
Go Sens Go!
Tonight was a small sample of how good Spezza is. He is just sick... only if he had a finisher to play with.
1) Trade Kuba by deadline (or worst case just lose to FA)
2) Resign Karlsson for ~6 years at 4 mil per
3) If Ryan Suter goes UFA, sign him for 6 years/30 mil (5 mil avg)
4) Trade Gonchar the following year, allowing for more cap room for Rundblad, Cowen, and forwards up front.
That's the biggest crock of shit you will ever read.
This team is losing because there isn't enough quality NHL talent on the roster, plain and simple. Saying it's because players are adjusting to a new coaches system is a cop-out.
You can do better.
New coach.. new players.. new team...
What's your point again?
All seriousness did you guys know who Ryan Strome was in October? Or Mark Scheifele? I can't wait to have a crop of kids from the OHL sky rocket their stock and knock out those 2 Russian kids using the CHL as a way to get drafted early.
Puempel, Noesen, Mark Stone F U & TW.
Thumbs down on it! Do it.
Like I said in the game day post however, the team IS actually good. There is enough talent to compete on a nightly basis. The coaching has been better, and the team I think talent wise, IS better than last season's.
The number one problem this season, and has been since the Patrick Lalime era, has been goaltending. The Sens actually had their legs for the first 5 minutes last night, before Auld let in a shit goal. After a couple terrible goals let in my your goalie, your confidence deflates and you dig yourself a hole.
The same thing happened against the Caps. Sure, Spezza's goal should have counted, but the second wraparound goal let in by Auld in unacceptable.
For this team to have a chance, we need a better goalie.
Please my man... I really hope you don't think this team is actually good. We have one true first line player and we're lacking a quality 2nd line center. That's three enormous holes in our top six.
Also, with Phlilips, Kuba and Gonchar playing big minutes on the blueline and the learning curve for our young defenders, we have easily one of he worst defenses in the NHL.
All these things will be solved soon enough when our veteran d are gone and we've restocked our top 6 with Yakupov and company.
the three young d continue to be the silver lining in every loss we've had. I thought Condra was really bad last night. Kuba was hilarious, i mean he curled up in the fetal position to keep a puck in his zone and it still got through him somehow. You could see Alfie was pissed at the end of the game the way he was throwing his body around. Same with Kenopka but that's hardly a surprise.
And I know this won't be popular but I think Foligno stinks. He makes moves that go absolutely nowhere. I just don't see him as a top 6 or ever putting up 25-30 goals like he was thought to. I would love to see him go if there is any value for him with his fancy moves that produce zilch.
Anyhoo - regroup and be ready for Winnipeg. this is a good chance to get a point! Go Sens Go!
Condra just isn't an NHL quality player. He's just a stop-gap solution until we get some real hockey players in this city.
I disagree with Foligno though. He's a player worth holding on to. I don't think he'll ever be a top sox forward be he's a great third liner. He's so good at grinding it out down low and working along the boards. He'll add that secondary scoring on some nights and I think he has some good leadership qualities.
Mind you if we can package him in a deal for a all-star winger for Spezza or a legitimate top pairing defenseman then by all means trade him lol
You posted a few comments on previous topic about our Head Coach, which I addressed on comment #226,early this Wed morning !
MacLean still somewhat short, on establishing a system that all the players have bought into ??
Rockin Robert
-regin, foligno, and neil are showing us their true self, these guys are flying out there, especially regin and foligno. It would be a huge mistake to trade any of these guys right now.
-karlssons putting up numbers, and his defensive game is slowly getting better.
-cowen is playing pretty good for a 1st year nhl player
-konopka and smith are doing their job beautifly, konopkas wowing me with his hardwork and determination. i thought he was just a fighter and faceoff guy when he first came in.
so in conclusion, 3 defenseman and our goalies are screwing us over
bm sucks. Why?
he signed Anderson. He signed Phillips. He traded Vermette for Leclaire and a first round draft pick if he had picked garbage with that draft pick he wouldn't be our gm.
I tell you he should be in charge of the PICKING of the draft but not with anything else ( He got lehner Karlsson Rundblad Cowen Silfverberg Prince ). In the past few years he traded almost all of our second rounders if you can get Silfverberg and Prince its worth not trading at all.
So you've determined that six games into his NHL career that Zibanejad is a bust? Okay bud. This is what I was talking about yesterday when I said there are a lot of dumb sens fans.
sben - Anderson was the best goalie available at the time. He put up decent and above average numbers in two losing markets - FLA and COL. There wasn't a better oppourtunity out there to sign a goalie (seeing as Vokoun would never sign with us). By getting rid of Elliot, we had first dibs on re-signing Anderson. The jury is still out on Schiefele and Zbad -we're only 6 games into the season. I agree it's pretty crazy that a OHL kid can come in and play really well in a men's league, but just wait it out and see. Zbad's ice time has been limited this year so far, and I think most Chirpers would agree that he'll be sent back to the SEL after his 9 game tryout. Our top end prospects are playing very well in their respective leagues, and it's all part of growing pains.
Yes on Strome and yes on Scheifele!
Strome was a good pick, Scheifele was a reach at 7 big time, they could have moved down and gotten extra picks and still gotten Scheifele later...
Sure he started with a bang in pre-season, buts thats exactly it, he has 2 shots in 4 games since the real season started. He's going to stick with the Jets cuz they need all the help they can get but I bet he wont live up to his pre-season hype.
@sben - Schiefele has done squat since the pre-season. I don't know how you can say he is so much better after 4-6 nhl games for these two. He has done nothing to prove that. you are waaaaay ahead of yourself.
Patience is needed! (except with Foligno :))
again - way too early to assess draft choices! c'mon man!
It's very nice to see that the players have realised that they have to right the shop this early on. Being blown out by COL and PHI shouldn't happen - yes they deserved to lose to a superior team in PHI, but to surrender 7 goals to them and the Avs shouldn't happen. Is it goaltending? Shoddy D? I don't know - but I believe it was Phillips last night that said "You can't just say 'oh I covered my man, I'm doing my job' it's a team game, and we all have to be accountable". Great words spoken by someone in a leadership position. He's not the player he once was skill wise (obvi....) but it's nice that he can take that initiative and try to help out the younger kids.
.... Start fresh, clean slate - bring on the Jets. It's a good measuring tool to put us up against IMO.
Condra is def and top 6 according to him, he was so insistant that he even accepted my fun bet where I said Condra doesnt reach 20 pts in the season....(he says he will no problem)
Hahaha so far so good for me!!!
And I havent even started anything yet?!?!
Its good to see tho that people have waken up and not following blindly as much as before.
The real fans know a rebuild is going on and it takes more than 1 year, lol...
Hehehe I agree, change them teams and you would have the same scenario, Couturier would suck for us and Zibby would be balls out in Philly. Have you seen Philly's team, any kid can succeed there, its a young team ripe with talent and has good vet leadership...an d a solid back up in Bobvroski haha!!
Understandably we are in the rebuild, I don't think anyone can deny that.
However, this team HAS talent. Not to win the cup, not to win every night, but certainly not to LOSE by 5 goal margins.
I'm hoping that once the 9 game tryout is over and we have a 'solid' team in place, chemistry will start to flow and our goaltending will strengthen.
Last night, every Sens player has disappeared with the exception of Karlsson, Michalek and Regin. Spezza and Rundblad are flickering light bulbs with moments of brilliance and then poof! they're gone!
So, here's to game 10 onwards - may the Sens bring some victories to the ice!
Side note - The Stache's maniacal smile scares the shite out of me!
Kuba and Gonchar are like a bad virus, we will never get rid of them...antibiot ics wont work...
$6.25 for 2 eggrolls.
I wonder if Auld or Anderson could stop an eggroll.
I dont know where you see talent in this existing roster...We only have 1 true top line player (Spezza) with Alfie & MM9 being good 2nd line players.
All others are plugs or stop-gaps while our prospects develop...
I mean come on, what do you want Spezza to do with Greening & Zibanejad...
Players scratched out IMO are borderline NHL caliber players:
Greening-Spezza-ZibanejadMichalek-
Da Costa-AlfredssonFoligno-Regin-NeilSmith-Konopka-CondraOh yes you have started something yet !
You suggested that MacLean "is supposed to have a way to play ??? a plan ??? a system ??"
Why do you judge a Head Coach, and his players after only 6 games ?? This team has "too many players, and on Oct 25,
a few will be gone from this roster" That's my quote!
Rockin Robert
Hey folks, just a friendly reminder that we are in the FIRST YEAR of a rebuild. To expect this team to beat teams that are considered top of their conferences or divisions is unrealistic but to expect them to compete each night isn't.
Remember that it wasn't all that long ago that Ottawa was the team that other teams simply tried not to look silly playing against. Now it is our turn to rebuild and it will, at times, be painful.
ok to Tookie and all the "finish last and pick first" rebuild crap...were you guys at the last two home games?
Do you really think that people will pay upwards of $200 a game to watch that embarrassment?
Can you imagine how much fun it will be to pay that kind of money to sit with Leaf and Canadien fans, scream, laugh and taunt you?
I was at the games, and I could only wish that I could grab the remote and stop the pain.
I was not fun, and I am calling out those who say "its a rebuild, and I will pay to watch 40 of these type of games"
It was purely painful!!!
Just my 2cents!
You're right Chirp. People need to look at the suffering the fans had to deal with in Chicago, Washington and Pittsburgh and understand that success doesn't come overnight.
With Lehner in nets and Karlsson, Rundblad, Cowen, Lee, Weircioch and possibly Phillips on D and Spezza still around as #1C & Captain...
This is what, barring all injuries, trades, UFA's, our line up has the potential to look like in 3-4 years:
Yakupov Spezza MacKinnon
Puempel Pageau Stone
Silfverberg Zibanejad Noesen
4th line I dont care
Extras:
Filatov
Prince
Cowen Karlsson
Wiercioch Rundblad
Borowiecki Lee
Gryba
Lehner
???
Robert Orr ( defenceman ) was a leading scorer for the Bruins many times, and was the only defenceman, to win 2 NHL scoring championships
Paul Coffey never won it, nor Lidstrom of today ??
No comment on my post to you earlier ??
Rockin Robert
Again, season ticket holder, so dont tell me about paying to support the team, I think I do my own fair share and more.
I was there for Philly, its alot easier to stomach when your with a group of 8-10 and drinking all night!
Different era's man, you cant compare the game back then to what it is now.
Pageau will never be our 2nd line centre. Probably won't even make the team
Now I know you are truly stubborn, and purposely evade discussions, simply by changing subject, or not replying at all ! Using "different eras man" is a cop out and you know it !!
You should also clarify your comment on Paul MacLean, in
post #225 in "Game Day Sens Host Flyers" I did respond to you in comment #226 .
Rockin Robert
@ Tookie
I was there for Philly, its alot easier to stomach when your with a group of 8-10 and drinking all night!
ok Tookie fair enough, if you tell me that you hold full season tickets, then by all means you have more than earned the right to your opinion, and Kudos for you to putting you money where your mouth is.
however I was there for both those games, and as a die hard sens fan, it is really hard to enjoy that kind of hockey... I really was hoping to just change the chanel :)
and I doubt that all these "finish last and pick first" people will pay to watch those games
Everyone that know anything about Hockey knew this was gonna be a tough season for the sens...
Only thing we can ask for as Fans as that the team and youngsters continue to improve so we get better...
Murray did well to stockpile the Sens with talent and did some good move
Lets relax and hope for continous improvement...
Although our team looks as bad as ever I truly do believe we have one of the brightest futures in the league. We may look like an AHL team but we have so much talent coming it's a little ridiculous so I'm not scared in the least bit after this start. My only concern is other shitty teams like Winnipeg and Columbus taking our 1st overall pick away. We badly need someone to play with Spezza. True 1st line players that are dynamic game in and game out are next to impossible to trade for so drafting is the only realistic way. I think Yakupov would be an awesome fit along side Spezza. And Filatov to me is still an unbelievable talent and if there is a coach who will get him into NHL form it's this one. I don't know if anyone remembers him in the world juniors but this guy was one of the best if not the best scorer in 2 tournaments in a row. I'm sorry but a few bad years in Columbus just deosnt take that skill away from a kid. Yakupov-Spezza- Filatov yes sir!!
ok then I am sure you will be at a game in mid January when we play Buffalo...my point is that in business you must have a product worth the money, and right now we do not have a product.
You you at both the Colorado and Philly games...why would I want to watch that disaster on a cold day in January?
Bottom line is we do not have to win, but we need to compete, and right now other than a few players, it is really hard to stomach those games!
agree, if it exciting ill be there W/L... and will be a season ticket holder once the new scoreboard comes...
Now you know how the other teams felt when we did this to them on a nightly basis... outside of a few players I can't say they arent competing, they are just simply overmatched at the moment...
Being bad this year is not a problem. I just wish we were entertaining. The team we are dressing so far has been tough to watch. I hope Paul Maclean does some passing drills in practice today because my god it was sad out there. It's a if were watching an East Coast League team trying to play in the NHL
There'll most probably be another PURGE in Febrary(make no mistake) Neil(gone) Michalek(most probably) Alfie(good chance) one of Foligno or Regin - Hopefully both of Kuba and Gonchar - we'll have 12-13 picks again. I'm on board - support the young guys and I'm telling you we'll win CUPS!
ok so I guess we agree???
I can take the losing, what I cant take is watching the so called professionals play like minor leaguers and have pay the pro price. Hey I know we have to support the team, and I do that, but these last two games I did not want to be there... I had better things to do
Saw a few things I liked in the game, and the Michalek-Spezza -Alfie reunion reminded me just how good a real nhl line can look.
I agree with others, after Zibanejad is sent back to the SEL it will be time to bring Filatov back up. If we're getting blown out anyways, he might as well be along for the ride learning the system and improving his defensive game.
Does Greening remind anyone else of Schaeffer? His style is obviously more physical and less skill, but his overall game reminds me a lot of the puck possession style Schaeffer used to play.
Anyways, the Jets should be more on our level. GO SENS GO!!!
If any of you had brains you'd know that Senschirp is talking about the comment BEFORE his which was mine and I'm happy to say that it caused alot of havoc and chaos just look at the rating score on mine...
Tookie19 will be the truth section (realistic)
SensChirp will be the hope section (optimisitic)
I'm thinking 3-4mil/yr for 4-5 years?
Hope to see the following lineup and combinations :
Foligno - Spezza - Filatov
Michalek - Regin - Alfredsson
Greening - Da Costa - Neil
Smith - Winchester - Condra
Butler as spare
Could also see Foligno and Michalek switch each other!
DEFENSE PAIRINGS COULD BE :
Phillips - Lee
Kuba - Karlsson
Cowen - Gonchar
Rundblad as 7th defenceman
Anderson
Auld
Other players sent to appropriate destinations !!
Rockin Robert
Pageau is cut from the same cloth a Claude Giroux, do you even watch Olympiques games? or follow the QMJHL? I would think not if you think Pageau wont make this team in dire need of a 2C...
He's driven by his size, he has something to prove, and has the skills set to make it happen.
I hope foligno is traded if not then send him to bingo or something he does not deserve to be any where near first line
It's going to be more than that. Don't be amazed if he wants Drew Doughty money, as their offensive stats aren't far off from one another. Especially if Karlsson keeps playing over 25mins a night. Expect something in the 4.5-5.5mil range. OFDs like him don't grow on trees.
Its cuz you go into the game expecting a product that isnt there, lower your expectations and go to see, lets say, the other teams stars, like I enjoyed watching Jagr back after a long hiatus, Giroux is always a pleasure to watch, JVR is a beast out there.
I hate Pronger but enjoy watching him live, guy is HUGE!!!
couldn't have said it better I think that Tookie19 should get to debate with Senschirp like the Wednesday roundtable 3 questions like the party leaders debate
We will develop a 2c starting with our Game # 10 ,and it will be either Regin or Da Costa !
Rockin Robert
You are wrong Tookie. Giroux is taller and scored 100+ points in all his QMJHL seasons. JGP isn't even close to that and will be lucky to ever crack an NHL lineup long term.
You have now joined the club sben !!
Rockin Robert
Why? What did you gain from that?
well done, your parents must be very proud.
1.)Detroit
2.)Washington
3.)Philly
I'm NOT making excuses, BUT let's try and keep this in perspective before we all lose our minds.
Our next 4 games,
-Winnipeg
-Colombus
-Carolina
-Florida
Not saying that we will win all 4 of those and be 5-5, but there's a very good chance we COULD.
So let's relax, it's 6 games into the season...I mean, we can't get any worse, right?
RIGHT?!?!
I do not care about winning...what I do care about is compete level, and if you are in the NHL, you cannot have those kind of games at home.
How long would you go back to a fine dining restaurant if you do not enjoy the food?
I hate to be honest, but the 67's are putting on a better product right now!
Gonchar, Phillips & Kuba are all terrible, Murray should have re-signed Volchenkov not Phillips. This is an example when a GM makes a decision because of what Phillips has done for this town as opposed to how he's been as a hockey player, he just keeps getting worse. Kuba will be traded & I wouldn't be surprised if Gonchar is bought out this summer, he looks slow & old out there. There are a number of problems with this team & most of them unfortunately seem to be that our veterans just aren't very good any more.
Yes you make a valid point
2112! Great album!
No Panic from Snoopy Senior by any means, but a whole bunch led by Tookie, are already looking at next year's Draft,
and writing off this year's team, as East Coast League
members !!
Rockin Robert
and sben will be the ignored section
Look, the seven year old moron obsessed with the thumbs-down button is back!
mommy, Mommy, look what I can do!
Yeah Chirp it's already been a long day here and it's not even 1 o'clock yet.
you make very valid points with the veterans, that is what bothers me the most.
Sit Kuba, Phillips, Gonchar, and let the kids play.
That would be more entertainment then watching the keystone cops play back there.
Yes goaltending was a problem last night, but against Colorado, it was the D-men.
And a ridiculous argument is "the veterans are needed to teach" yes GOOD VETERANS, Like Lidstrom.
the only thing these 3 can teach is how to increase you minus in the +/- , get a raise and stay in the league even though it is clear you can no longer play!
I'm with Snoopy, in a tough rebuild where nothing seems to be going right so far, especially disappointing goaltending, I am just hoping we can get some chemistry and system in place by the end of this month, and send whatever prospects we need to, back to their Jr clubs.
@miguel,
Very good point on our "3 muskateers" Kuba, Gonchar & Phillips.
Murray should seriously consider packaging these 3 to Edmonton for one of Hall, Eberle or Nugent-Hopkins !
After all we have a ton, of up and coming defencemen in the pipeline !!
Rockin Robert

Dude I would take the Hall from Hall and Oates right now :)
Couturier has a late birthday, thus he has had more development in the QMJHL (3 years) than ZBad has had in the SEL (1 year). Wait until both have reached their full potential before you make a comparison. I too wanted to see Couturier drafted by the Sens, but let's not be too quick to judge please.
What...you mean 6 games isnt enough to label the Sens toast?
Ok, I'll wait after these next 4 games where we should....at the very least...win 2 games...
Again I ask, whats wrong with wanting a better future. I still go to almost every game, and have found it interesting to watch and follow the other teams stars and rookies, espcially the last 3 years!
I completely agree. Also the reason Couturier was rated so high is that he is NHL ready, whereas most of the others were considered longer term investments. The question about Couturier is that his ceiling is possibly lower then the others. But I too had hoped when he dropped that he would have been our pick. Zibanejad will be really good too one day though, no doubt about that!
I cant tell if your sarcastic or not, there is not sarcasm font!! dammit!
If your serious.....i'm putting you in the ignore blog with sben...
Kuba, Gonchar, Phillps together wouldnt even get us ONE of Hall, Eberle or Nugent-Hopkins! !!
Yeah Let's do this!
It's a simple question of what's more frustration;
1) Having a team that finishes bottom 5 for 2-3 years before become and elite NHL squad (Chicago, Washington, Pittsburg), or,
2) Having a team that finishes just out of the playoffs (in some cases, even making the playoffs) for 2-3 years and having little/nothing to show for it in terms of future projected growth/success.
Lets just say that the Leafs rebuilding process (STILL in the works) is 20 times more frustrating then our will ever be.
This is a rebuild so expect to suck and take away positives. It's not just about the young guys, Murray is likely waiting for a UFA in the next two years to spend some cash on.
Count me in on the Fllatov returning camp.
Growing pains are what we are into, I enjoyed watching Karlsson feed Rundblad on the PP looking for him to shoot, once we get in panic mode everyone plays like crap.
Rundblad gets his confidence up you can tell he will be fun to watch.
last game we played better and we were hitting tape to tape all night, playing well elevates everyones game, playing in panic mode gets everyone in panic mode.
Thursday is another day, fresh start
Anderson is a great goalie, he will come around, his head is not where it needs to be, he will play better on the road when he is away from the drama he must have at home.
Auld well he was not brought in to play top teams.
I enjoyed the Karlsson goal, you guys talk of trading him are insane, he is leading the team, we need more guys like him not less.
if you started Lehner for the next 4 games maybe with his competitive attitude could spark this team with confidence
Winnipeg-Colomb us-Carolina-Flo rida ..we could take 3 of 4
Bad idea, this is SensChirp's blog, I appreciate all the hard work he does and thank him for letting me put my views on here, but I dont want my own section or blog thx.
Gotta think that something is going to happen here w/ Ottawa
Ah, but you're not Tambalini of the Oilers, who is desperate for defencmen now !
Edmonton was ready to give us 3 guys for Heatley, and now the shoe is on the other foot !
Rockin Robert
If both teams still finished in the bottom 5 this year, that would be awesome.
I know next to zero about the draft prospect pool for next year, but with two picks in the Top 5, finally the Forsberg vs. Yakupov argument can stop, we'll take both.
I have no idea, what would it take not considering Karlsson Rundblad Cowan
more than that
if we don't include a D called Karlsson, Cowen or Rundblad we would need to add a very good forward prospect such as Noesen or Silfverburg in place of Kuba or Carkner and possibly throw in a 2nd round pick.
So for example - Lee, Noesen, Carkner and a 2RP.
Even then you run the risk that Edmonton go on a complete tear and suddenly all we have is our pick and the (for example) no14.
I agree on these points, but everyone should take take a hard look at #2 because we've been that team for the last 2 or 3 seasons, finishing just close enough to make the playoffs. Or just missing them, but never being good enough to compete. Everyone was angry with that Sens team, saying we should just rebuild. Now we're doing it and everyone is upset. It's frustrating, we know this, but it's part of the process.
It's already been said before, Ottawa would be in charge of any trade offers from Edmonton. As much as I don't approve of all the trades BM has made, he would never rely on the fact that Edm is going to bottom out and settle for a pick expecting it to be in the top 3.
dont forget Bergeron from Tampa also has 8 points, and he has a hard time finding a spot in the NHL.
There are plenty of good d-men like Karlsson that will not be as good as Doughty.
At best Karlsson might end up like a Dan Boyle or an Enstrom, but he needs to pick it up defensively, if he wants to earn a big time contract, he has not done that yet IMO
Those 3 wouldn't even get us a signed Hall hockey stick
We still have a long way to go before the guys finally but into MacLean's system....perha ps even years but if Anderson can play the way he can and if our defense can tighten it up, then it can be a pretty good year. I thought Gonchar played okay the last game. Not outstanding but a step in the right direction. Buy out Kuba...it seems he has forgotten even basic positioning.
