GAME DAY- Sens Host Flyers

It will be another tough test for the Ottawa Senators, as they play host to an Eastern Conference powerhouse, in the form of the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers come into this one with a 3-0-1 record on the season, including a 2-0-0 record on the road.  Ottawa’s defence will need to be at their best tonight with the high flying Philadelphia team in town.  Puck drop is just after 7:30 PM.

The Senators will be without defenceman Sergei Gonchar for this one.

He took a shot off the ankle early in the game against Washington and has a bruised ankle.  The team is calling it day to day but he will not be in the line up tonight.  That means Brian Lee will draw back in on the back end.

Meanwhile up front, the Sens will once again be without Bobby Butler.  He injured his groin last Thursday against the Avalanche and has been placed on the IR.  With Winchester still on the shelf, the Sens will go with the same twelve forwards that dressed in Washington.

  • Greening-Spezza-Zibanejad
  • Michalek-Da Costa-Alfredsson
  • Foligno-Regin-Neil
  • Smith-Konopka-Condra

  • Phillips-Lee
  • Kuba-Karlsson
  • Cowen-Rundblad

Craig Anderson is expected to dress as the back up tonight with Alex Auld set to make his second straight start.  Anderson missed practice due to personal reasons yesterday and with Auld coming off a strong start in Washington, MacLean has decided to go back to him tonight.

Guess MacLean wanted to pair a rookie with a veteran, on defense pairings which is much safer than a Cowen - Rundblad duo.

Looking for a breakout game from both Line 1 and Line 2,
and we can count on Line 3, to check the daylights out of the Flyers top lines !!

Senators 4 Flyers 3

Please tell me we are not going to get into another goaltending debate in Ottawa!!

I understand Auld had a decent game... but shouldn't we let our #1 play? Unless, the personal reason have sidelined him just enough...

I have a feeling we will see him back for game 10 on-wards. Once the 9 game tryout is complete for many players... some will get sent down opening up a gap for Filatov.

I think you're blowing this a little out of proportions. I know Chirp mentioned that Anderson is sitting for personal reasons, and that's fine...but I'm of the opinion that you have to play the hot hand.

I like Anderson, I'm aware of why his stats are horrible so far (D letting him out to dry), Auld had a great game against Washington and deserves a second test. I don't think anyone is saying that there is a goaltender debate, Anderson is obviously still our #1, but I for one am glad to see Auld get a second try as he was solid last game, and let's be honest...Anders on hasn't had a "great" game yet.

Part of a coach's job is to put in/out players as they get hot/cold, and Auld is the "hotter" goalie right now.

Or maybe Anderson is just dealing with stuff and I'm looking too much into this :P

As mentioned before only Zib is on a 9 game tryout due to his age. Greening Condra Butler are here to stay and don't have Entry Level Contracts

Rundblad could technically be sent away also but that doesn't affect Filatov, but Rundblad will have a year of ELC knocked off anyway

I think that since Da Costa is slotted at the 2 line center Zibby will be gone after the 9 game trial since there is no point in keeping him at a wing position if he is to become our future #2 center.

One move I would be curious to see is a line of Foligno-Spezza- Filatov. I think Foligno is more skilled than Greening but can still give that phsicality and net presence while Filatov and Spezza do their magic.

I'd just hate to break Foligno-Regin-N eil though but it should be worth a shot. Give us a chance to see if Foligno really has top 6 potential before we re-sign him next year.

Stay off Anderson? I agree, however, you can't expect a typical Sens fan to lay off any player in this city. Our fanbase loves to run players out of town and then they wonder why we can't attract any quality UFA's.

Do you guys think that when players from other teams hear about how some of you fuckheads booed Kuba and Gonchar during the opening night introductions that it will make them see Ottawa as an attractive free agency destination.

I really agree with you. However, I think that could be said for most fanbases in the NHL/ Sporting world.

There always seems to be a player on the team that fans will got on when they are struggling.

Yes, there are many examples for Ottawa; Redden, Alfie, Spezza and so on. I think it's annoying and frustrating, but I don't think its unique.

If anything, I think we tend to think the worst of ourselves. The fact that there is a pretty steady readership on Chirp's site suggests that there are clearly dedicated fans.

So by that logic, considering the Avs are one of the worst in the league, we shouldn't be able to score more than 1 against almost anyone. And since the lowly Avs scored 7 on us I think your prediction is a little bit unrealistic... 12-0 Flyers

Nice thing about pro sports is that they're unpredictable. We don't know who'll show up, just because we're projected for the bottom (and I expect us to be around the bottom throughout the year) doesn't mean we won't pull the odd upset once in a while.

If potential FA's have an attitude that they won't sign here because players get booed if they don't try, I don't want them on the team in the first place...

We don't need any crybabies on the team... Players should know that if they don't give an effort, then they will be treated that way...

I don't understand why everyone is freaking out about this. I agree it was wrong to do it during player intro's, but at the same time, people need to let them know they won't tolerate poor efforts.

It's funny that even after how trades went down last year people are still amazed it hasn't come to fruition yet.

Remember how early BM started working on trades last year? He flat out said he was trying about 2 weeks into the season and they didn't materialize until closer to the trade deadline. Most of what we'll hear right now are just rumors about the groundwork being laid for future deals. Very few big deals are made this early in the season as every team still has hope for themselves, their prospects and their season and aren't normally ready to throw in the towel.

Absolutely agree that there are plenty of dedicated fans out there. What pisses me off is the stupid belief that only optimistic/posi tive fans are dedicated.

Just because I think we will miss the playoffs this year and just because I thik we could very well end up with a lottery pick doesn't make me any less dedicated than somebody who expects us to finish in the top 2 of the division or top 5 of the conference.

Dedication does not solely equate to positivity. All I ask from any team I support is that they try each and every time they play. So far this season 4/5.

I'm really enjoying the season so far and don't expect that to change.

Not really hard RR, Zib goes to AHL or SEL.
Rundblad stays, no point in sending him anywhere, he aint gonna improve anywhere else byt the NHL.
Da Costa get 2C.

What about Winchester, Konopka, Regin, Da Costa,Butler, and maybe Rundblad??

You seem to think it's just a piece of cake ??

Rockin Robert

What do you mean I just told you about 3 of the 6 you posted?

Zib to AHL or SEL.
Rundblad stays cuz of contract, no point in sending him to AHL or SEL.
Da Costa get 2nd line centre.
Konopka stays, he's got a 1 way.
Butler is on IR.
Regin has a 1 way.
Winchester has a 1 way.

Damn right that goal should have counted, 9mm was PUSHED! mind you he didn't do much to get out of the way. I have still seen goalies get interefered with far more and the goal still stood, there was one last night that counted and I immediately thought... " And they disallowed Michalek's?"

I'm going to 2nd Blads getting his first NHL Goal. Posted it on FB this morning too!!! Him and EK are going to be working some serious magic back and forth on the PP, Sergei who?

Really hoped Gonch would have relished the fact that he has kids to mentor, kids looking up to him. But he doesn't seem to give a flying F

I really hope Fila comes back before, if/when ZBad is sent to AHL or SEL, I'd love to see Zbad - Spezz - Fila tried for 2 or 3 games.

If the same Sens that played Saturday come to play tonight it's going to be A LOT closer than some think

I hope EK has another repeat performance defending

Go Sens Go, Play hard!

Not sure if you are responding to my statement about the blindside head shot to Greening or not.

That was almost the identical hit by the Wash player.. that Clarke McArthur was suspended 2 games for.

By the way Greening was moving his jaw on the bench.. I assume that's where he was hit.
Not even a penalty.. and no mention of a review. Now that's a head scratcher.

I was looking at the slim pickings of quality ufa forwards next year and I'm starting to think unless we are hoping to land Zach Parise (doubtful), any quality additions will have to be made through trades. There are very few top six players coming up for free agency next year. I have a feeling that we will be sticking to the rebuild next year and filling holes from within.

In the Ottawa Citizen of today, both teams are listed side by side. Including players who are injured ottawa has 27 players +2 goalies = 29 ! Flyers have a total of 24.

I know this is somewhat contradictory but we need at least one for sure star....I personally would be ecstatic if our current guys panned out and we got Yakupov.

Then although I wouldn't expect much the next season I wouldn't outright expect the 1st overall pick in 2013. Another top 10ish pick would be great, but I would be much more satisfied with our future outlook(oh and another high end goalie prospect)

Really and truly....no goaltending...3 of the first 4 were beyond awful. Im sorry, but if they could get some timely saves, games wouldnt be over in the first period. Auld has been below junior hockey calibre...and add this with the 2nd goal in WSH.

Det, Tor, Col, Philly (barring something incredible) were pretty much over early aside from a few teases...

Honestly, nobody is going to want to go to games if this keeps up. I will pay money to see them if they make the games entertaining and competitive.

I could care less if they lose...at least make them entertaining games...I've turned this one off already - again.

Also, Condra doesn't belong out there. I realize this is a young team and they all need to learn, but he is not an NHL'r in my books. Even if he scores one or two, here and there...he's lost out there.

I COMPLETELY agree.

But I'm a firm believer that the team is actually good.

The goaltending this season has been downright horrid. Like you said, the second goal that Auld let in the other night pretty much lost us the game. The team dominated Washington and actually played well.

We have cap space. Keep Lehner down in Bingo, and sign a goalie who wants to show up. I know we are rebuilding, but rebuilding doesnt mean losing every game 7-0.

wow...i knew it would be bad, but this bad? on a more relevant note, i feel the defense on this team is still playing much the same way as they played under clouston, as in they allow a ton of shots and are not very good at clearing the puck past the blueline. thought that would change with the wholesale change in players and coaching staff. the offensive style of play is still too much into cycling and playing towards the outside. and shots still have a hard time finding their way to the net from the blueline. it seems like the opposing goalie only has to make saves to keep himself warm.
..............

why am i seeing more of the same from last year....when its supposed to be different.....e ven if they lose atrociously.... .

What exactly is your purpose anyways? Here, let me show you what someone in the complete opposite spectrum as yours is like:

SENS FOR THE CUP THIS YEAR! I KNEW THIS GAME WAS GOING TO BE A LOSS BECAUSE THEY'RE PURPOSELY TANKING FIRST THEN MAKING A PUSH FOR THE #8 SPOT. IT'S ALL A TACTIC. I TOLD YOU SO!

I hope that the rumour between the Sens and Oilers involves trading Karlsson for Hall AND Nugent-Hopkins.

Defensive liability or not, it says a lot that Karlsson almost has as many points as both of them put together playing for one of the teams at the bottom of the standings. Guy is definitely not going anywhere.

He's a generational player, takes over a game...

He has 25pts in 10 games as a 2nd year player on a shitty Sarnia team...(without Galchenyuk too)

They are 8-1 ALL because of him, like Crosby did for Rimouski, all a bunch average players stepping up cuz of his presence.

Do you have pleasure seeing the team lose and/or pleasure massaging your own ego?

Do you think you're above every one else?

I'm a sens fan but to tell you the truth the sens are really a bad team every one has to admit it. there are still ways to improve.

keys to success: #1 Get rid of Anderson somehow( BM will have to do some crazy gm stuff because Ottawa needs it or send him to bingo and bring Lehner)

#2 Get rid of Dave Cameron he was one of Melnyk's picks and I think Maclean will be able to get a better substitute and mainly it will give a feeling of newness

#3 Get a darn good defense man that can garn good freaking not give turnovers and bring the puck up and darn good freaking BE RELIABLE!!!!!

Lol, its okay to dream once and awhile... the cap has gone up every year since the lock out, yes there may be changes with a new CBA, but ZBad, Silfverburg, Noesen, Puempel, Yakupov and Stone will all still be on entry level deals, along with Rundblad & Boroweiki, & Lehner (i think).... Getzlaf, Spezza and Perry will all be in the 6-7 million range, and Karlsson will likely be in the 5 range at this point too. If Murray stands pat this summer, and doesn't try and fill holes via Free agency, i think it is plausible he tries to sign two players he clearly likes the next summer, if we have the cap room.

1) If I'm Getzlaf and Perry, why would I leave my team in SoCal that I won the cup with to come to Ottawa? Neither of those players will be leaving Anaheim.
2)I love Karlsson! I think he has the potential to put up 30 goals and 80 points as a D man. But I can see Tookies point. I sometimes wonder if the Sens could win the cup with Karlsson as a top 2 defenseman. Teams that win the Stanley cup don`t have consistent defensive lapses. That being said, I want the Sens to keep him (rather then trade him for someone like Eberle) He`s still only 21 and he will get stronger and improve defensively. He just needs a good defensive defensman partner (I`m looking at you Cowen) to have his back so he can shine. I can tell you this, the Sens won`t win the cup with Karlsson on the PK.

The team playing in front of Anderson is the problem. Does he need to be better? Of course he does, but he's backstopping quite possibly the worst team in the entire league. Anderson can't score goals for us.

Anderson also wasn't in net for the first 4 goals to tonight, Auld was.

On Zibby - I think he has played well and can help this team this season, although he does look lost on the ice a fair amount. I am still leaning towards sending him back to the SEL so that
a) He doens`t lose confidence
b) Doesn`t develop bad habits in what will surely be a long season
c) Don`t burn a year of his entry level deal.
He has spent 2 months training and playing at the NHL level. He knows what he has to work on to take his game to the next level. Let him light up the SEL and dominate at the World Jrs.

Teams have won with purely offensive minded dmen like Karlsson. Look at Tampa with Dan Boyle and Pittsburgh with Gonchar. Karlsson has the potential to be better players than either of those two guys.

What kind of fan are you to ridicule a Head Coach after
only 6 games ?? His system was working vs Washington ??
As usual, you thrive on the negatives and continue your nitpicking attitude ??

And also, you did not reply to my last comment "we have too many players" You said Zibanejad was the only one to be sent back .
