GAME DAY- Filatov to Binghamton of AHL

(UPDATE 4:03 PM)- Bit of a surprise move this afternoon as the Ottawa Senators have announced they are sending forward Nikita Filatov to Binghamton of the AHL.  Better to have him playing down there instead of sitting in the press box in Ottawa.

Acquired in a late season steal, Craig Anderson will make his first start against his old mates tonight at SBP.

Anderson was a star with a Colorado team that shocked many of the experts in 2009, on route to a surprising playoff birth.  He is trying to repeat that success with a rebuilding Ottawa Senators squad in 2011/2012.

It will be a special night at SBP as the Sens will debut the much talked about Heritage jersey.  The team is scheduled to wear it 11 times this season, with the first coming tonight against the Avs.  Can’t tell you how much I love this jersey.  So much in fact that I’ve now purchased two of them.  One with #41 Anderson on the back and another one that is blank and looking for inspiration.

Can’t wait to see how the jersey looks in game action.

There will be plenty of shuffling for the Sens tonight as it turns out.  Both Bobby Butler and Brian Lee are back in the line up.  Erik Condra and Zenon Konopka will come out as the Sens will go with seven defenceman.  Interesting adjustments by MacLean.

Puck drop will come just after 7:30 PM with all the action available on SportsNet and the Team 1200.  There are also still tickets remaining so head over to www.capitaltickets.ca and grab yours!

  • The Ottawa Senators, along with the City of Ottawa Archives and Mayor Watson are making an announcement at SBP at 12:30 PM.   An exhibit celebrating Ottawa's Hockey History will be unveiled today. The new exhibit will be on the 200 level of Scotiabank Place this season.
  • The Sens had a couple scouts watching the Avs/Jackets game last night in Columbus. Seems like a case of checking out an opponent ahead of time but it's important to note there were 27 scouts in total at that game. Something to keep an eye on.

What's going on with Butler? He showed a lot of promise last season with Spezza and so far this year he is getting the shaft.

Seems to be minor attitude problems. There were problems with him and Filatov in practice the other day.

Little joke. I heard it was due to his slow start. No drive in preseason, no drive in practice. Maclean wants time to be earned, not just given.

They weren't frigging around as such they were getting a drink. MacLean balled them out and that might be why they sat out against the Wild.

It's a bit early to try and saddle Butler with a poor attitude don't you think. especially as the coaches last year both here and in Bingo had nothing but good words to say about his attitude.

This is how stupid bullshit rumours get started.

Hey Chirpers

I'm SO into that new Jersey as well, I really want one with Karlsson's name on it. That or Lehner, but I'd go with someone who's already playing, then get a 2nd with Lehner later on.

I'll admit the first two games we saw strugles, but you can't deny the work they put in, especially in the 3rd period of both those games. Then to come out and play a full 60 minutes against the Wild to get a win at home, was special. Sure, the Wild aren't expected to do much more than Ottawa, but we'll take it. While I'd like to see that same effort night in and night out, it'll be hit or miss and I think most of us know that. As long as they continue to push, even when they look like they are out of the game, that's worth watching.

Looking forward to the matchup tonight, the Aves are in situtation like ours, so it'll be another battle of young players out to prove something.

Go Sens Go!!!

regarding Butler and Filitov - i'm not going to believe a bunch of rumours about attitude either. I think it is fairly obvious - McLean commands a complete game from his players and Butler and Filitov are one dimensional players who need to learn the other dimension to secure ice time. I like it, setting accountability and expectation from the get-go.

If that's the case we might have to trade Filatov and Butler. Sure they are one dimensional but I thought that one dimension is why we picked them up. I don't want to trade them though.

As mentioned, as long as there is 100% effort tonight, I will be very happy. Lets tighten up that D for Anderson!!!

Off topic:
Playing NHL 12 on xbox and Kuba is currently my best D, (and it gets worse), they still have Leclaire and he is completly out-playing Anderson!!! I was going to trade them away early on, but now I'm stuck in a bind! Its so painful seeing their names every time I play, when they have brought nothing good to the real Sens. LOL, I'm not looking for any advice on my NHL 12 dilema, I just thought I'd share something that I found humerous :)

Stay tuned for tookie's prediction of 5-2 Avs. I'm anxious for tonight's game as so far the avs have been a VERY low scoring/goal against team, and the sens have been a VERY high scoring/goal against team, so we'll see which way it goes :)

GO SENS!

sure filitov was traded for his offense but that doesn't mean he gets a free ride on d. I dont think his sitting is because of poor performance on D, but poor effort. McLean doesnt expect to see Kesler out there, but he does expect effort. If Filitov puts that effort in, he will play.

But at the same time, that doesnt explain why Lee can't get in for a game...

Man, I thought Kenopka was good on Tuesday. He won defensive zone draws, scrapped, went in the corners and controlled the puck and even carried the puck well. Granted, he took an unnecessary instigator penalty but the scrap itself was well timed. He is definitely the odd man out most nights but I'm glad we have him. For what he does, he is very dependable. if you are going with 7 d-men, you definitely dont want or need a forward used to 7-8 minutes a game though.

Going with 11 forwards and 7 D. Think that means we see less even strength minutes for Gonchar. Smith and Butler rotating in to the three lines throughout?

Hope The Stash has a set PP for tonight. Got to have Spezz & Alfie together. I hate watching PP's without the 2 of them together, obviously much MUCH more dangerous with 19 and 11 alongside one another.

9mm/Greening/Zb ad - Spezz - Alfie
Gonch/Blads - EK

Or next time Filatov plays, put him with Alfie and Spezz on PP's

at least they are not benching a player who has been playing well,
I do feel for Filatov, b/c his pre-season was pretty good, and a young guy to be benched a few games in a row, can be very demoralizing... we will need his scoring if we are to have a good season...but on offense it really is hard to pick one guy who deserves to come out of the lineup after last game

At this point I'd rather the Defensive PP unit be a combo of: Gonch/EK/Blads/ COWEN

BUT, giving credit where credit is due: I must say: Kuba is one of the best (yea I know.....weird) anyway one of the best in the NHL at keeping the puck in the zone on clear attempts. I can't count how many times during the last 3 seasons how many times I said "how the hell did he stop that and keep the play going"

So I guess it's good to have a player who is highly skilled in that regard......IMO it's something that you can't really teach. It's a lot of perception, hand eye coordination, and a bit of luck.

Either way I hope he breaks out of whatever the hell is wrong with him to either raise his trade value or make our hockey team better. If he can manage to get to the level he was at prior to last year our hockey team will be better. And have a solid looking D

Philipps Karlsson

He says "Thats not an excuse, tell your boss to get sound on his computers or he will be benched!"

Haha actually I do have sound. What I meant is that if I use that sound I'll get in trouble. Whereas I can easily hide the fact that I'm reading comments.

I like the 7D, they are simply extending their pre-season evaluation and seeing who plays best. Besides, we have a few D's that would probably would make great forwards - worked for our captain after all).

I think the logic behind the D benching is that you have to give the vets a chance to improve. Vets often don't see too much ice time during pre-season, and the young kids do. So its not uncommon for the vets to be a little shaky for the first few games.

I think that having a disgruntled vet in the locker room is more damaging than having a kid sit a few games out (for a short amount time). Obviously if the vet is performing poorly for an extended period of time, then he's gotta go, but one does not trade Spezza because he doesn't score for 10 games.

I'm not defending Kuba, Gonchar, Philips...just stating that the logic is probably simply not benching them to give them a chance to shake off the rust and not make an impulsive move.

The above comments by Patrick 2.0, are so appropriate to what is going on, with our 3 lagging veteran defencemen.

However, when we have played another 6-7 games, the moment of truth will also be there, and we will make the proper adjustment type decisions.

Murray and MacLean will weigh all the pros and cons !

People need to seriously realize that people aren't pissed about Gonchar's production, it is his effort level... I don't care if it's the first game you play of the year, the effort has to be there, sure you'll make mistakes and or struggle, but the effort always has to be there, especially when your paid like he is...

Filatov needs to be in the lineup, tremendous skill that's un- tapped right now and its not going to come out sitting in the press box. Needs a chance in the lineup, watch as soon as he nets a couple were all going to supporting him for top 6 minutes. Even though he may have been shaky on defense hes not learning anything or getting any better being scratched... just my two cents on that, you might agree or disagree

Patrick your logic is correct but don't kid yourself when Coach Paul dressed 7D for tonight he is saying to his Defencemen, everyone is to be on alert because dress 6 I can play with 5, dress 7 I can play with 5. I think it's a great move and I think it came from the OHL (Coaches)...

A couple things .... First and foremost - I think Tookie got laid last night ... it's the only explanation for his 'positive outlook on life'. Second - great audio clip by the 'Stash', take a listen if you haven't yet & third, I don't think there's a showcase going on tonight, just a coach trying things out with the option to bench tweedle-dee and tweedle-dumb.

Prediction for tonight's game .... 4-0 Good Guys!

They're dressing 7D because they don't want to scratch young players when Gonchar and Kuba aren't performing. It's a message to the struggling vets that if you don't play well we have a guy right here who can take your place.

Protecting Gonchar's PP time is laughable. He's been awful so far this year particularly when the Sens get the man advantage. Rundblad has been far superior in his limited PP time because he's playing like he actually cares and is making things happen out there. Gonchar just drags his ass and takes a coffee break for 2 minutes.

Agreed - just watch how slow Gonchar skates when he carries the puck out of the zone on the power play. The other players have to slow down and then he makes a panic pass because nobody's open. Then watch when Karlsson or Rundblad carry it...the players can skate full speed and expect a decent first pass out of the zone...

0 #89 Timic 2011-10-13 14:10
I really think that the 7D is because they want Lee with Philips, don't want to remove Runblad, and need to showcase Gonchar/Kuba as much as possible. It's fairly clear already that Lee can do the job and so can Runblad. Moving Gonchar or Kuba is now a priority.

Regarding Filatov, I don't think they've given up, but they really have to evaluate Zibby right now. Can't he still go back to SEL this season? I feel like that's what will happen - just so they know what they have in him for next year, but have him playing. After Winchester comes back, the bottleneck will be even worse. Zibby to SEL - Filatov and Butler share time on Spezza's wing. That's my guess.

Filatov will definitely be in the mix at some point soon. He's still going to be a really good player one day, but he has a lot of growing to do. Not bad to sit him for games here or there as there's plenty to learn from the press box ... just ask Brian Lee.

My opinion:

Filatov to Bingo is a good move. Don't get me wrong, I love filatov's game and I really hope he finds success here in the big league, but we are still evaluating rookies and trying out new things (new coach, new players, new system - lots to figure out this early in the season).

If I were to take a guess, it's after 9 games, some rookies (zibby?) who aren't quite ready yet will go to their proper league and Filatov will come back. He gets to play and shake off rust in bingo right now instead of warming the bench. His 2-way contract and quiet play made him victim of a numbers game.

It's better that Filatov see the ice somewhere that sit in the press box here. The silver lining here is of course that Regin is finally once again showing the form of his rookie season.

Fans need to stop referring to two-way and one-way contracts as if that's the reason he was chosen. All it means is the team saves money by sending him down as opposed to the other contracts. It has nothing to do with whether or not he has to clear waivers there are a completely separate group of rules governing that.

Ok. I can't handle the Filitov/Butler attitude non-issue anymore. For the record, they were the 13th and 14th skaters at the time of "The Incident" and weren't even involved in the drill. MacLean calls everyone over to discuss the drill and then yells at Filitov and Butler to get the hell over here. Since they weren't involved in the drill, they didn't think they were supposed to go over. The Sun reports this as Filitov and Butler getting yelled at by MacLean and suddenly they have attitude problems. Really people? Stop setting your oppinion on players based on what Don Brennen says.

Someone pointed it out already: There's nothing wrong with Filatov. He just one of few players with the flexibility of a 2-way contract.

The Sens are still evaluating Zibanedjad at this point. And all things seem to point to him going back to Sweden. But if he ends up staying, expect a minor trade or a player being placed on waivers to accomodate him and Filatov to stay in the lineup.

We have too many 1 way contract, and I don't think the intention was to get Filatov and have him play in Bingo all year. He's a project but 2 games is hardly an investment in time for this guy.

Finally, the Butler/Filatov attitude thing is pure bullshit. People need to understand the difference between a lack of effort and a bad attitude.

Heatley = bad attitude. Kuba/Gonchar = lack of effort and motivation...

Absolutly terrible, they needed to keep their legs moving, Filatov is probably gonna bolt to the KHL because HE DOES NOT WANT to play in the AHL and losing a chance on having a player like him reach his potentiel is pathetic. I predict another tough practice ahead of them tomorrow morning...

Also think Ruuunblad needs to go down to the minors for a bit..He was supposed to be a physical offensive presence on the back end but he seems as soft as Kuba right now..

I know it's only been 5 games but I think Zibanejad would really benefit from one more year in the SEL. I think he's going to be one hell of a player someday but there's no reason to keep him in the NHL this year.

Same goes for Rundblad. He needs to go down to Binghamton to refine his game a little.

You know, youre right. I think Alfie is a great player, but really, the leader of a team must be able to not only lead by example, but also be heard loud and clear all the time. the quiet type leader only works if the assistants under the captain are the "ra ra ra" type players (EG Chris Neil). Heres a question then, which player in this years draft, is the closest comparison to Bobby Clarke, back in his day. Sure he was dirty, but he played incredibly hard, and wasnt afraid to call out his fellow players if they werent giving the same amount of effort.

Terrible game, but these comments make it seem like molten rocks are raining down on them from above.

I will admit that I did not feel that we would be a lottery team at years end: I thought that the new coaching staff would work well with the young core and that would lead to a better offense... it has. I was wrong about Anderson being respectable for us. You can't blame the D on every goal; he's looked brutal for us through 4 games.

Can't believe anyone said that Rundblad needs AHL conditioning. He was probably our best player out there tonight (not saying much though).

Also... like it or not, if Filip Forsberg has a standout world junior, he'll be taken over Yakupov in the 2012 Entry Draft (by us anyway).

Let's also hope, just in case (we are playing Washington) that The Stash starts Auldy on Sat. If a goalie gets hung out to dry again on Sat I really don't want it to be Anderson.

p.s Thought Butler was the best Senator out there, he kept his feet moving for the most part every shift. Neil Foligno Regin line had a few moments.

Any team with a good forecheck will kill us this year. Cowen and Butler were not bad but we are extremely weak down the middle. Our young players need to put on a lot of weight because we were pushed off the puck everytime. At the same time it was fun to watch Duchene and J. Johnson of the Avs. They are studs.
Great attendance but a lot of spectators were really really mad. It is clear that most attendees do not agree with the rebuild mode. There was a small chant calling for the firing of Murray. A lot of season ticket holders in my area of the rink left really really early.
This is tood bad because the Senators have really improved the quality of the service at SBP. Staff is improved, they hand out beautiful pins, food is better, cheerleaders, bringing out soldiers makes it really an enjoyable experience. However will people keep coming for the next 3 years with a really weak young team? I will :)

OKay, here we go...

I think 3/4 of the posters on here and Sens fans at ScotiaBank Place are complete losers (booing on opening night - now that screams that we are quite pathetic. No wonder ppl don't like us). People. LEARN TO LOSE! Remember We are not a winning team!

I can't beleive you guys are already saying that Anderson sucks, Spezza sucks, Alfie sucks, Karlsson sucks, Rundblad sucks, Kuba sucks, Gonchar sucks, Phillips sucks...Trade bait these guys, this guy's a clown. Not happy with the Sens, go find a winning team then and don't come back.

You know what: Stay positive for once and enjoy the game and the team we are so fortunate to have!

I am a Sens fan and I stand by my team regardless how horrid we can be. Win or Lose by 6 goals.

Welcome to the pain of a rebuild. People will call for Murray's head, but it is what it is at this point. However, if I were Murray and I had taken over a team that went to the finals and within a few years had turned it into the worst team in the league I'd wonder if I did a good job. I know there are lots of reasons he was set up to fail, but I understand why people will question him, solely based on the results in the standings. In his defence, almost every team that has been to the finals in the past 5 years is sucking its way through a rebuild now (Carolina,Tampa , Edmonton, Calgary, Sens).

We lost the game 7-1 because we iced 7 D?
contender in 7-10 years?
Trade Spezza & Michalek?

:(

I shouldn't read this site first thing in the morning. My brain isn't conditioned to take these comments this early.

Fans are funny.

They win and the playoffs are right around the corner, our draft picks can do no wrong, etc.

They lose, and the end is near. Draft pick order posts start, trade so and so, fire such and such.

You people are going to have a very long next couple of years!

I agree with many of the previous posters - it's always tough when your team gets a beat-down, but as everyone already said, it's a rebuild year.
I suppose it hurts even more when the team that beats us is supposed to be around the same level of skill and end up with a simillar amount of points.
Growing pains everyone - there WILL be more nights like this, but every game is a lesson in learning for the younger players. As long as they keep moving, hussle, try and learn, then one can see even a loss as a motivator and a learning experience.

Senators coach Paul MacLean said the Senators just didn’t measure up. “Sometimes I thought we dressed 20 defenders, not just seven,” he said. “I give a ton of credit to Colorado for the way they played. They made us look bad, yes. We were in spots where we couldn’t execute because of the pressure they put us under and we didn’t handle it very well. We didn’t play well at all from the start to the finish and we have a ways to go.” Agreed!

Let's see what we're really made of over the next couple of games, against elite competition.

Was a tough game to sit through, had about 3 Avs fans around making the stupidest comments; I almost lost it. Good thing I only 2 tall boys or things could have got ugly. 7 D = bad idea jeans.

Most of us knew that there were going to be nights like these, maybe we didn't think it would be against Colorado, but what the hey. We are rebuilding, we aren't very good right now, we are going to lose some games like this. We had effort in 3 games and none in this. This is going to happen again.

In a way it's good that a beatdown like this has come early in the season, it's a reality check to all those who thought beating an average Wild team suddenly made us contenders. Just as it was ridiculous to suggest that after the Wild game, it's ridiculous to be shouting trade him and sack him after this. Get some frigging perspective.

The important thing about this game is how the coach and players react. I can't imagine PM has been on the wrong side of a game like this too often and to see what he des will be interesting. The veterans will have to rally round and pick up the younger players. As long as there is no hang over, this game is done - forget it and move on.

Do not think that MacLean will dress 7 defencemen anytime soon !
Instead of sending Filatov to Binghamton, they could have kept him in Ottawa for a few more games.
Jesse Winchester is almost game ready, so who will go back to Bingo ??
Konopka is a tough guy, wins some face-offs, but he will either be healthy scratched many times, or sent to Bingo.

When we reach the 9th game, some tougher decisions will face
Murray and MacLean, so let's play who we have, and see who stays with the Ottawa Senators, and which players go elsewhere !

It was a bad loss for sure, no heart, no hussle, we just gave up, we looked like a very bad team...in fact we are but thats another battle...

Getting the 1st overall pick is huge for this team, we need an elite prospect, a Crosby, an Ovechkin, this upcoming draft has them, imo, Yakupov, Galchenyuk (inj), Grigorenko, Forsberg....Pla yers that can come in and make an impact right away.

Yakupov and Galchenyuk were part of the R&D NHL camp, although not to impress but to test rules and whatnot, they were the only junior players at the BioSteel Camp run by Gary Roberts, alongside stars like Stamkos, Cammalleri, C. Stewart, Price and they impressed.

I dont know much about Filip Forsberg but he seems to fit the mold of a power forward, good size and scoring touch!

Grigorenko is the shape and size of Couturier but much more talented, plus he had drive...for a Russian!

There is NO way the Sens would take Grigorenko. He hasn't even said if he's sure he wants to play in the NHL yet.

Forsberg and Yakupov are the only two who really fit our needs AND can step into the NHL next season.

In no particular order

Grigorenko: 9g 10a 19pts in 12 games as a rookie.
MacKinnon: 5g 13a 18pts in 11 games as a rookie.
Yakupov: 5g 11a 16pts in 7 games.
Galchenyuk (hasnt played, knee injury, not serious)
Forsberg: 1g in 9 games (Not unusual for a 17 yo in SEL)

Jean-Gabriel Pageau has 7g 6a 13pts in 6 games!
Puempel has 5g 5a 10pts in 8 games.
Stone ha 6g 12a 18pts in 7 games!!
Noesen having a hard time with only 1g 6a 7pts in 8 games.

Apparently they were getting a drink of water.

Watching it on sportsnet...same old sloppy hockey. Rundblad and Karlsson are both terrible defensively. I honestly don't think Karlsson will ever improve any more on D. Send Rundblad to the AHL, who cares if he whines...he sucks so far.

My god, really.. he's played TWO NHL regular season games. He needs time to adjust to the NA game. To say he sucks after two games is ridiculous. Look who he is playing with to start.

With the first overeall selection the ottawa senators are proud to select from the sarnia sting NAIL YAKUPOV!!

And the year after that.

With the first overeall selection the ottawa senators are proud to select from the Halifax Moosehead...McKinnon!

Can you imagine our team with those 2......I get shivers!

Or Sean Monahan of the 67's... he will be up near the top of the draft picks as well.
