GAME DAY- Sens in Detroit

It is finally here.

After months of draft talk, trade speculation, coaching changes, free agency chatter, line up banter and endless discussion about the second line centre position, the Ottawa Senators season finally gets started tonight!!

For Ottawa, it is a tall task right out of the gate.  The perennial powerhouse, Detroit Red Wings, are one of the most consistent, well-coached organizations in the league and are always a threat.  Add in the fact that it’s there home opener and you know the Sens are in tough.

But if anyone would knows how to beat the Wings, it’s Paul MacLean. A staple in the Wings organization, MacLean is now on our side and will make his Sens debut behind the bench against his former employer.  Not a bad way to start his Ottawa coaching career.

  • Michalek-Spezza-Filatov
  • Greening-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
  • Foligno-Da Costa-Neil
  • Condra-Smith-Butler

  • Phillips-Lee
  • Cowen-Gonchar
  • Kuba-Karlsson

Craig Anderson gets the start in goal. Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM.  The game can be seen on Sportsnet East with radio coverage available on the Team1200.

Let’s get this thing started! GO SENS GO!!

"For sure, there will be (nerves). I'm sure there will be. I just hope I'm not scared to death, but I think I'll be all right" -- The Stache

Could we not keep Lee instead of Kuba? Lee was by far the more consistent and better of the two.

Why is Kuba in the lineup?! I really hope he sits out tomorrow's game at least.

I don't want this to be another season where we are questioning the coaches decisions. I know Butler has been less than impressive but the guy needs to be in the top 6 in order to be successful and the same goes for DaCosta. Sticking them on the 4th line against the other teams' grinders is not the right move IMO. They're just going to get thrown around easily by the bigger players.

As for Kuba, from what I've seen, this guy has not even earned himself a spot on this team and IMO Rundblad has played better than Kuba has.

I'm not doubting MacLean's decisions, but I sincerely hope that the lineup will not be exactly the same for tomorrow night's game. Hopefully we come out on top in both games.

I am very excited about the game tonight, and how our young studs perform,
but I have to comment on my dismay on sitting Lee...here we go again!
What is it with Lee being the perenial whipping boy!
So if he whined and screamed for a trade... would we then play him?
I have to say that he was probably at worst our 3rd best d-man coming out of camp, and his reward is a scratch for game 1.
I gotta tell you if I am his agent, he would have played his last game as a Sen, and would demand a move!
This makes no sense, and to be fair, in the grand scheme of things will it make all that much difference for tonights game, probably not, but he has more than earned the right to play, and would not blame him if he demanded a move.
Shame on Sens management, I could list 3 players who should be sitting ahead of Lee. What lesson does this teach the young players... get a large contrct play like crap and you start!

It's finally time!! I like the lineup except for Kuba. Brian Lee was one of the best d-men in the pre season and deserved to be in that 6th slot with Rundblad. Also, when Regin comes back i think he takes Condra's spot.

I'm not too worried about Kuba getting playing time. I really think the Sens will play him and try to showcase him for the first 10 games. If he can show something then maybe, just maybe someone would take a flyer on him. I would hate to see Lee's confidence fall too low if he is sat out like last year. The scary thing is that when I went to the practice on Saturday, Kuba was turning the puck over on the power play drill which had no defenders! Yikes.

Garrioch tweeted 27 minutes ago his guess is that Runblad doesn't play tonight because Lee deserves the chance.

Personally, I'd rather see Runblad because I think his game is built for Detroit hockey. Plus, give the kid a chance to play against one of his idols; Lindstrom.

This will be offensive minded hockey, Rundblad would be more entertaining. However, Lee deserves to play, Kuba should sit out. Sucks for Lee if he ends up the odd man out again; because he did play well in pre-season.

On another note, not good news about Campoli last night. Nothing has been said about the lower body injury, but the immediate signing of Joe Callahan to a one-year-contra ct says it all.

I found this on Dobber Hockey:

When a rookie plays 10 games, the first year of his entry-level deal kicks in. Generally, that means that the team will have to pay him a non-capped salary one year sooner than they would have. The entry-level cap is for three years, after which the player can make as much as 20 percent of the team's salary cap. So for fiscal reasons, the 10-game plateau is key.

Why on earth would a team sit a young player on an ELC for 74 games, just to avoid him burning a year. For one thing, you are taking up a roster spot for the whole year. Secondly, you are seriously hurting your prospects development.

^---- If they intend on keeping Kuba and giving Lee a fair shake (that much at least I agree with) then do the right thing and send Rundblad to a team where he can play regular minutes and grow his experience. Riding the pine on the NHL Express will do f**k all for the kid.

Time for tonight's prediction! I'm calling 3-1 Senators.

This game was frustrating because Detroit really didn't play that well. We gave them the game. Ottawa kicked their own selves in the foot with costly mistakes. It was just a matter of Detroit capitalizing on them. That's it.

Other than that I was thoroughly impressed with almost the whole team on the offensive side. You can really see the difference in coaching. Just like last season, it was just those subtle mistakes that costed the team. That penalty at the end was a buzzkill too.

This team has potential. Glad this was only the first game of the season.

Sens showed an ASSLOAD of improvement over their last game. Plenty of room still to tighten things up before tomorrow, although I fear they will be tired.

The "stars of the game" are a sham. Milan with 2 goals should have been probably second star while Filppula (he was all over the f**king ice involved with most RW attacks) probably should have had first star.

Oh in the words of my buddy "Don" all of you people here shitting on the Sens tonight are pukes. Improvement, improvement, improvement, learning, learning, learning, and we showed a lot of that tonight and iced an exciting game.

Sens showed far more potential than I had hoped for for Game 1, and I am an eternal optimist.

We play like we did first and third period we are going to win games.
Almost all our young players showed bursts of greatness, Karlsson had an off game.
Spezza Michalek looked good together, Greening DaCosta stood out.
We get confidence we will be a force to contend with.

Really excited about the way we played most of the game, sure was a lot better to watch than last seasons losses.

Mistakes can be corrected and are no big deal, just learning.

Hard fought game. Team seemed to lose their sails after that 1st goal, but a nice attempt at a comeback in the 3rd. Great to see 9MM and Spezza connect tonight! Anderson played well, the team will just have to minimize mistakes going forward. Karlsson looked off tonight, but I'm sure he'll correct that for tomorrow.

we played too much hot potatoe and it got us in/trouble. we need to relax and control the puck. detroit was good/at keeping puck possesion during the line changes which led to the 1st goal and gave detroit lots of chances, much better than giving the puck away on a dump in. our team pressuring the puck carrier is a big improvement over letting guys walk right in our zone for a freebie like in the previous cloutson era.

lots of possitives coming from this loss, we'll learn from our mistakes and be better next time out.

Couple of comments. Sens held their own in the first & third.

Second period... Anderson could have been better.. but he was left out to dry.

1st period.. Gonchar... what the hell was that? He gave up on that Bertuzzi breakaway -- at least show effort like Cowen did.

2nd period.. the nightmare. Giveaway by Phillips & Karlsson.. count 2 more goals.

Do you really think Rundblad would have been worse tonight than Gonchar, Phillips or Karlsson?

It's funny... just before Kuba scored.. I said.. shoot stupid.. and he did and in the net.

Now in the 1st the Sens shoot on the net... it's hits ONE GUYS SKATE and bounces out... In the third... White shoots the puck through 5 or 6 players and it goes in.. Sens have NO LUCK.

Good comeback in the 3rd. To only lose by 2 goals to the skilled & elite team that Detroit is.. not too bad in my books. The guys never gave up.

PLEASE PLEASE just beat the Leafs.

3-2 loss in Binghamton. We need a power play quarterback. Please give us Runblad at least! Hoffman and Wiercoch were our number line on PP. Hence 2 short handed goals allowed.

I know the AHL is a "development" level, but when a team has Potulny, Aucoin, Kane, Bourque, Mink, McFlicker, Perrault, Richmond, Wellar ect...

We need help...Benoit and Smith were not replaced

For those of you saying Karlsson had an off night, I agree in some sense, but just remember who hisdefensive partner is. Kuba may have scored a goal but overall her had a horrible game as usual. I can't expect Karlsson to play to his potential when he's lining up on the blueline with Kuba.

I want to see Karlsson and Cowen partnered up already, let Kuba and Gonchar go down in flames together on the 3rd pairing.

Considering the money they're getting paid, Gonch and Kuba are our two worst players. I gave up on them long ago!

Just shows you cant make too many mistakes or you get burned. But hardly anything to panic over, lots of good came out of that and I think they'll come prepared to beat the leafs tonight. No one should be giving up just yet after last nights loss to the wings.

Let the kids play -- I would sooner see them make mistakes than the vets. Maybe they should have kept Benoit & Derek Smith to play D.

A couple of more positives out of this game... Sens scored 2 PP goals and held Detroit to 0 in 5 PK's. To hold Detroit to no goals on the PK is pretty good in my opinion.

Baby steps... it's about improving every game. Beat those Leafs tonight...

@Tcharger

Spezza is "playmaker" needs "elite players to play with".."Spezza is a elite centre men"... is that what your saying really really Really lol all people do is make excuses bud ..I agree Spezza needs help possibly a kick in the ass its gut check time for jason if he wants to be Captain its time for him with his skills to start taking over games ..That includes making whoever he plays with better and burying his chances as well...so keep making excuses thats the job of ass clowns like you

did you even watch the game last night? if it weren't for spezza we would have been shut out. all offence went through him. saying he needs to do more proves you a fool, and you come off like a jealous leaf fan pouting because you don't have a number one centre.

It's his 3rd game of the season... give it a rest. Alfie was -3 last night -- Spezza was a +1.

I'd like to see BB16 in the top 6; and Rundblad playing.

Karlsson was the odd man out last night. We can't have those turnovers. He ain't a rookie anymore.

Trade Anderson, trade spezza, this team sucks!

Seriously???? There's a reason you aren't GMs. These flip flop fans that want a trade when we get scored on and think we're heading to the playoffs when we score drive me crazy.

Anderson was a bit off this game, defense let him out to dry, and detroit's experienced offense made our rookies look foolish in our own zone. Great learning experience for our own guys on how not to lose composure like they did. Stash called a time out at the right time to get them to regroup.

Pro
9mm was awesome!!! I don't remember him playing like that ever
Costa was great with his stick, and made experienced d-men look silly
Big #2 looked solid

Bad
Gonchar's giving up on the play (looked just like kovakev).
Give aways right in front of our net
Losing composure in 2nd period.

Super excited for the next 81 games, this team will look better in 15 or so games.

Off topic..

Pageau has 7 pts in 4 games.
Stone has 16 pts in 6 games... that's unreal.

I have to agree with some of the guys here and say you people that are calling for people's heads (except Kuba) after one game are a joke.

it was one game against an always powerhouse team in the wings. They capitalize on their opponents mistakes, that is a big part of their game.

of course we are going to have some growing pains but the Sens hung in there and I think Howard stole a few from the boys.

A couple of bad giveaways cost us yes, but the game did not play as bad as some of you are saying.

There were a lot of positives last night and if you look at the game stats, we were in it the whole way.

I still remain excited for this season. Not think we are contenders by any means but if we stay healthy, I think we surprise alot of naysayers

how pathetic are the leafs, they need to play us only in our back to back games to give them an edge, if I was a leaf fan I would be embarassed to see that.

I would be embarassed if we played them after their back to back games every night, kind of saying you are not good enough to just play them even up.

I hope we spank them anyways.

one complaint about last night, I had a choice on center ice of watching a detroit feed ot TSN and I watched TSN so it would not be all drooling over Detroit but it was that even on TSN

Guess a good team knows a 3-0 lead really is not good enough. So that's why they took it to 5-0. Too bad for us they didn't stop at 3. Maybe we would have got a point last night?
