Sens Practice in London, Ontario

With the new season now just a couple days away, the Ottawa Senators made a stop in London on their way to Detroit. The club held their practice at the John Labatt Centre, home of the OHL's London Knights.

Peter Regin skated for the second straight day but is still considered doubtful for the opener against the Wings.

For the second straight day, Bobby Butler skated on the fourth line for the Sens.  Butler had a fairly quiet preseason and has quickly seen himself slide down the right wing depth chart.  For Butler to be successful, he is going to need to play with skilled players.

Looks like MacLean wants to make sure Butler earns that ice time.

According to Sylvain St. Laurent, the Sens practiced the power play a little bit at practice this morning.  The first power play unit featured Gonchar and Karlsson on the points with Spezza, Filatov and Michalek up front.  Safe to assume that will be the first power play unit on opening night.

  • Have seen a few reports suggesting the Rangers are looking for a defenceman to shore up their blueline.  Before anyone gets excited, it will not be Filip Kuba.  I was recently told that while Murray has made calls regarding Kuba, there is no interest right now.
  • Thanks to those of you that signed up for the first SensChirp Fantasy Hockey League.  Unfortunately we could only take 20 people so my apologies to people that did not have a chance to sign up.  Will have news on a prize for the pool in the coming days.

Really starting to think that once he's healthy, if anyone will be shipped out it's Matt Carkner.

He's really the only Dman that I can see that has, 1) Trade Value, 2) Reasonable Contract 3) We could hopefully fetch SOMETHING have decent.

Although trust me I wish, WISH it were #17.

I agree. Its starting to look like Kuba won't be moved, at the very least not until he can prove he can keep up with today's fast paced NHL. If he can play half descent on our top 4, Murray may be able to find him a new home for a draft pick or in a package(with either Neil, Foligno, Winchester, Butler, or Regin) come trade deadline season.

I think our best bet to make a good trade during trade dealine season will be to package one of the previously mentioned players along with either Lee or Carkner. I know Carkner is a fairly good pro and could fit in quite well as either a 6th or 7th Dman but let's face it, those type of guys are easy to find. And Lee has had a good pre season and will hopefully prove he can be a top 4 Dman however in the next 2 years he will have to beat out players such as Phillips, Gonchar, Karlsson, and Rundblad to make that top 4 where he can actually be effective. I would much rather us get a 1st rnd pick or a young top 6 forward

Sorry forgot to mention Cowen in the players that Lee will have to beat out to get a top 4 role.

I, unlike 99% of Sens fans had Lee's back for the past couple years even though he struggled. I just knew he would be a solid pro some day after watching him eat up the world junior tourney. However I at this point don't see him in our teams future and therefore see him as a solid asset for the franchise.
Lee along with Carkner and Neil could be very helpful additions to a team on the verge of making the playoffs or just a cup contending team looking to add toughness.
It would also be nice to find Regin a new home since let's face it isn't cut out to be a 2nd line centre. He's a good hockey player and I'm sure a team would like to have him. I say trade him even if it's only for a 4th or 5th rnd pick. It could be used to move up in the draft very easily. This year will be an amazing draft class and is our chance to do serious damage

I think that if Butler can't win his spot back along Spezza by trade deadlin, you have to look to move him. He simply is not a player who can produce as a bottom 6 forward. I love Bobby Butts And hope he is able to find his scoring touch again because I believe that him and Filatov could be very good wingers for Spezza. Michalek isn't a pure offensive machine and is more suitable for a 2nd line role where he can use his speed to shut down other teams elite forwards but also chip in 20-25 goals. And along with Zibanejad and hopefully some day Silverberg, they could make up a dynamic power forward line.
That said...if Butler doesn't win his spot on the 1st line back he should be traded and hopefully we are bad enough to draft either Yakupov or Forsberg fir that spot and if not trade or sign a legit 1st line winger(Parise maybe??) because without a real good player in that spot Spezza will never be able to carry us to the finals again

Points are gained in head to head match ups in the categories I've selected. Then there are standings based on those points.

NO ONE WILL TOUCH KUBA!
Really if you were a fan of another team, would you want to pay Kuba $4 mil to have one of the worst +/- in the league. He really brings nothing of value at all.
So offering him to any team for nothing is not an option.
Placing him on waivers will mean you pay him full salary in Bingo. And I for one think that is more than a bargain! I was almost sick to my stomach, watching him flee from any contact in our own end, and play awful hockey, while Brian Lee sat for 30 games. I do not think that I could handle that again this year knowing how many better d-men we have in our system.
Enough of playing guys b/c they have big contracts, let them ride the bus in the A and earn the $$$. Better people/players than Kuba have had to do it ie Wade Redden!

Hi Chirp, saw your note about the other pool. I will be taking part in a live draft online starting at 7pm on Yahoo, so hopefully I can get myself confirmed while doing that.

I've seen some of the posts regarding ESPN and Yahoo for fantasy hockey, I've been in both and much prefer Yahoo. ESPN has some good things, but I found it less user friendly and they had one major bug regarding players with dual position's (ex LW/RW) being allowed on your roster, as they would take up 2 spots, not just 1 like Yahoo does. That was an issue 2 seasons ago I emailed the Support to find out why, it was design intent (so they say) and I stopped using it because of it, haven't went back, so I'm not sure if that is fixed or not.

Some of you guys saying these injuries (Carkner, Winchester, Regin) are blesses in disguise couldn't be more correct. The team is too stacked as it is and waiting in the wings are 2 more 1st rounders and potential WHL points leader for the second straight year in Mark Stone. If I'm not mistaken, all of the 3 who are injured are all playing the last year of their contracts and I see none of them coming back next season.

Carkner and Winchester are UFAs after this year and (likely) won't be back. Regin is an RFA after this year and could play his way into an extension or at least a qualifying offer, but we could also walk away if there's no room for him.

Loan him to Europe.

LOAN... you mean give :) we could only wish!

Any chance the Sens grab MacLean off waivers from Phoenix?

They should. More depth never hurt anyone. I have a feeling at least one or two of Condra, Butler and Greening are going to flop BIG TIME.

What do u consider flopping BIG TIME? Condra and Greening are role players, so 25pts instead of 35pts? I think Butler's started slow, but as long as he puts up 15-20+ goals and about 40 pts total, it's good enough this early in his career ... unless he gets back to the 1st line in which case I'd expect mid 50s.
