Alfredsson Story Seems Premature

Early yesterday, a story broke from Sportsnet’s Ian Mendes suggesting that this could be the last season for Senators legend Daniel Alfredsson.

At the age of 38, Alfie has suited up for 1056 games in the NHL, all of which are with the Ottawa Senators.  The fact that he is treating this season like it may be his last should not come as any surprise.

We have heard the same sort of talk from Alfie the last couple of off seasons.  He is coming to the end of his NHL career and that is something he knows and the fans in Ottawa know.  It is absolutely a story to keep an eye on later in the season but at this point, the story may be a little premature.  If Alfredsson is healthy and productive this year, I am certain he would be open to coming back for another season.

The second issue at play here is the idea of trading Alfie to a contender, something Alfredsson also addressed in his interview with Mendes.

At this point, Alfredsson says that's not his intention but the Ottawa captain does leave the door open for a possible trade this season, if it makes sense for both himself and the organization.

"That might change, but as of right now, I have no desire to do that," Alfredsson said when asked if he would follow in Ray Bourque's path. "I haven't even thought about it that way. I'm committed to stay here, but who knows: things could change come February or March. But right now, I'd say ‘no’ to that question."

The very thought of trading Alfredsson makes me uncomfortable.

Obviously that is a right he has earned through years of dedication to this organization and this city but it will be a decision that is entirely up to #11.  If he wants to go elsewhere, then the organization must accommodate him.  But as Alfie indicated above, that is not his plan right now so thankfully it’s not something fans need to worry themselves with just yet.

The Ottawa Senators are about to drop the puck on their 20th Season in the NHL and anything can happen.  Projected as a bottom-feeder by some, this team is poised to surprise some people and the Captain Daniel Alfredsson is going to be a big part of that.

Talk of dealing the face of the franchise or speculation about his playing future can be left for another day.

as a Sens fan from day one, the day Alfie retires will be the the sadest day for me as a Sens fan. Most of my hi-lites of the Sens include Alfie as part of the success. In his early years he suffered through one of the least successful franchise and had little or no one to work with. Imagine had he been part of a successful like Detroit, he would go down as one of the greates Swedes of all time, and one of the best NHL players of all time.
But for me as a Sens fan he will go down as one of the best of all time.
But not at the end of this year, he still has 2 more years left!

One thing that nobody seems to be mentioning, and it could really hinder any trade to a contender at the deadline, is that Alfie's contract is a 35+. Even if he calls it quits at the end of this year, his avg salary still counts against the cap next year. Most contending teams are going to be at or near the cap. How many of them can, or are even willing, to take a $4.8M cap hit for a player that old?

Don't get me wrong...I'd love to see Alfie lift that cup (and I'll cheer for any team he gets traded to), but I just don't see it happening.

Agree with you Migeul -Alfie had a short term "elite" success with Hateley and Spezza. Besides from those years post lock out, he didn't have very much to work with. Agree - if he played in Detroit, Colorado, SJS or perhaps Vancouver, he would be way past that bubble of "elite" player that some people see him as and be a knock as a future HOF member.
I hope by playing with younger players this year, it could help him find that extra spark - Something Gretzky spoke of when he retired with NYR too.
Only a few more days left!

If trading him means we help the Org get better, I'm all for it. Many factors will weigh on his mind at the end of the year or even midway...

His lingering back issues...
Team performance...
Future of the team...
Family...

If only 1 of those things are negative (except family) I think he hangs them up.

I don't think it's too early or disrespectful to talk about a deadline deal involving Alfie. Would I like to see him stay and retire a Senator? Yes. Would I begrudge him or the organization if something mutually beneficial could be worked out? No.

Personally I think it would be tough for Murray to sell whatever return we'd get to the fans. For some people, it would never be enough.

Could it be because he's only making 1 Million next year. Those late years on a contract for dismal amounts are the ones they usually walk away from.

I'm assuming that the NHL will create a spot for Alfie and/or he will play his way on the team. If he is healthy I could see him traded to Vancouver, Detroit or another contender for a championship run. Nobody should hold that against the Sens organization and Alfie. If the Sens are out of the playoff race then getting a good return for an aging superstar is the way to go. At the end of the season, Alfie comes back as Senior VP of community relations or whatever and he remains a Senator for life.

He signed before 35. He was bought out so if he walked away from the last year of his contract we wouldn't have the cap hit.

You have to love Alfie. Just read an article where he told reporters, while on this Ottawa team bonding trip in London: "most of the guys are younger, so they'll do what I tell them to do. The young guys just get me tape and drinks. They're a good group." Haha

Capgeek.com has it as a 35+. Are they wrong? I thought he was in the 3rd year of a 4 year contract. He's 38 now (39 is Dec), so that means he was 35 when he signed.

I don't think his previous contract that he was bought out of had anything to do with it. I'm no CBA expert, so I could be wrong here.

Alfie is ours forever! He is too expensive for anyone else and that was the plan all along. Mr. Alfredsson says (and me too) "I'm making the playoffs this year!"

It would feel bittersweet obviously. You always want your own player to win the cup with your team. I would hate having to be known as the team who couldn't win the cup so it took our Captain to be traded in order to get a visit with the cup once the season was over. Alfie began with the Sens and will retire as one. He'll still be around the team in a head office type of role. Unless the impossible happens to the point where we would win it this year, but let's be realistic.

On a side note, the 2 out of 3 1st rounders that were sent back to juniors thus far after only a few games, this is what it looks like.

Stefan Noesen - GP 4 - 1G - 5A - 6PTS
Matt Peumpel - GP 5 - 3G - 4A - 7PTS

Noesen is ranked 1st on his team and 33rd in the OHL
Puempel is ranked 2nd on his team and 21st in the OHL
Mark Stone was named player of the week in the CHL

Keep it boys we can't wait to see you guys in Sens unis for years to come!

Agree with some posters here... he has 1 more yr after this left at just under 5M cap hit. Most contending teams can't take that contract for next season.. and if he retires they are stuck with it.

A team will have to be desperate to do that..

I would imagine if he retires he'd want to retire a Senator anyways, so they could always pre-arrange to trade him back at the end of the season and we're the ones stuck back with his cap hit as originally intended. It would literally be a player loan for the end of the season.

All that said though, I don't see him leaving and I think the "surprising" results we'll have this year may even convince him to play out next year.

That is very true, and I seriously doubt the Sens would give him another contract... He either plays it out (which I doubt he will) or he retires next year.

Alfie is no dummy, he knows playing for 1Million is not worth it to his health.

That would be freaky but would also mean that Alfie won't have played a full season... Above all, I wish him an 82 game season (and perhaps some extra games...).

If Alfie decides to come back next year, the team can buyout his remaining 1 year of this contract and offer a real salary.

Actually this is probably the plan because his cap hit would likely be lower this way. The buyout of his current contract would only cost 2/3 of that 1 million, paid over the next 2 years. So if he then re-signed for let's say 3 million, his cap hit would actually be lower for next year, then currently planned.

I don't necessarily read that as he is expecting or planning this to be his last year. he will be 39 in December and is realistic about what his body can tolerate. I think he will play until he feels he can no longer contribute. he wouldnt speculate about that at this time of year. At the end of a season he would but not. I think(hope) he's just saying he is going to give it his all and be damned about worrying about injuries. He has the heart of a lion and this is what winners sound like. We Sens fans are lucky to watch one of the greatest Swedes of all time!
but he could get us a nice little something at the trade deadline in exchange for his cup run, and hopefully sign with Ottawa again and retire a sen...after a few years :)
if that happens I do hope it is the Red Wings that come knocking!

The Senators' franchise has had very few treasures in its history...

The failure draft picks, the superstars that never were, the blackhole in goal.

Alfredsson is the pinnacle cornerstone that this franchise has had and could ever hope for. Loyal, dedicated, and talented. Those are 3 things that no other senator in history has ever exhibited they way Alfredsson has.

Murray wont trade him. It wont happen.

The Senators dont want Alfredsson to pull a Mats Sundin. Thats why. Its pride. Sundin bailed on the leafs and went to Vancouver for 1 and a half years for 10million. He pretty much abandoned the leafs and took the biggest paycheque he was offered. Thats the difference between the two, and Murray wont give up the best thing that's happened to Ottawa.

Book it.
