The Sens will still be without a couple of key guys as injuries remain an issue late in camp. Peter Regin will not dress but is optimistic he can play in the opener despite injuring his shoulder on Tuesday night.
Chris Phillips also missed the skate this morning and will not be in the line up in Boston.
Here is how the Sens are expected to line up...
- Greening-Spezza-Filatov
- Michalek-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
- Foligno-Smith-Butler
- Condra-Konopka-Neil
The fact that Zibanejad lines up with Alfie and Michalek tonight is a pretty good indication he will start the regular season in that position. Da Costa was banged up in practice yesterday but did skate today with some of the extras.
Craig Anderson will start for the Senators and is scheduled to play the full game.
And again for those of you that missed it earlier. A look at Alfie in the new Heritage Jersey that will be released on Saturday. This looks like an absolute home run for the organization.
Expect to see this jersey all over the city this season.

Not yet. We know that Phillips and Carkner are out and Karlsson and Wiercioch are not making the trip.
I am throwing this out there...
Realistically what should management do about the huge issue of Kuba!
He has proven he can not make this lineup... he looks just as bad if not worse than last year.
we have 8 or 9 d-men that are better than him. He seems to think he is untouchable, and has been.
No tradinig is not an option, the NHL is not a place for brain dead mangagers, no one wants this useless mistake prone, 4 mil dollar nightmare. Options are:
a)cut him and buy him out (makes room for a more deserved player, and makes us beter
b)waive him (no he will not be picked up) and let him try to earn his way back, may wake him up
c)sit him in the pressbox
d)Call up Francis Lessard and tell him there is a little bonus for him if he pulls a Filotov on him :)
Yikes... that D will be weak tonight... Kuba's playing.
I really like those lines. Wish we had someone a bit more "skilled" than Greening on the top line with Spezza (not saying he's not good), but that's what you get with a rebuild I guess. I was really hoping Filatov/Spezza/ Butler would build chemestry, but Butler is off to a slow start and I understand that Greening will provide some "grit" that the line was missing.
Super excited to see a "near final" linup play tonight!!! Does anyone know if its being aired or a good stream?
Folingo-Spezza-Filatov
Michalek-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
None of the above, we're in a rebuilding phase, Melnyk wont buy out a player in a rebuild, no point in doing that. In rebuilding they have accepted the fact that they will finish in the bottom half of the league to gather more picks.
OK, I'm guessing the six d for tonight are Cowen, Rundblad, Gonchar, Kuba, Lee, and Borowiecki.
Ouch, depending on who Boston plays upfront, this could be a very hard game for our D.
I am pretty sure the buy out period is over. So cross that out as an option independent of what EM is willing or unwilling to do.
Cowen, Gonchar, Kuba, Rundblad, Borowiecki, and Lee.
Boston
Newcomers Corvo, Pouliot, Clark get more preseason ice time tonight. Seguin, Thornton, Sauve, MacDermid sit this one out...Boychuk, Seidenberg, and Khudobin are also scratched for tonight's game.
Sens can't buy Kuba out ... it is too late. That had to be done in June.
I think they keep him here ... mostly in the press box ... send him to Bingo occasionally for conditioning stints ... while trying to trade him (which likely won't happen).
thanks Phil did not know they could not buy him out.
I get that you are on board with the "lose all year and get first pick train of thought"... an in theory there are arguments for this, but this will wear on a fan base that pays approx $200 per game night or almost 10K per year. Which begs the question, are you a season ticket holder?
I am a huge fan, and even I question why should I shell out those bones on a Jan -40 night to watch a player (or players) of Kuba's ability? Last year I really struggled to watch Kuba, Kovalev, Gonchar, Elliot, do you not agree?
Seriously, there is minor hockey in Ottawa, that have better players than Kuba. IMO
Phillips-Cowen
Lee-Karlsson
Rundblad-Gonchar
with their management we should get a great return for him!
stop picking on butler, its not like we are paying him 3 or 4 million per... just wait i'm sure mclean is monitoring his progress and will place him where he needs to be.
no sense putting huge (media & fan)pressure on a kid making under 2 mil per season in his first full year of nhl hockey.
relax, its pre season and things will change.
I disagree. Rundblad and Gonchar would make for a major liability defensively. You need to split Philips and Cowen unless they're playing on the QK...
I think Cowen with Karlsson, Gonchar or Rundblad is the way to go. Personally I like:
Cowen-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Rundblad-Gonchar
Cowen and EriK
Lee and Phillips
Gonchar and Kuba (that's why they have been hiding him)
David is gone to Bingo or going home.
Yes I do have a season tickets and the last couple of years have been a pain but I like to see the big stars from other teams come in, you dont see them often, makes it fun.
Also by suporting the team in a rebuild is exactly what will make this team contend for the next 10-15 years. Do you remember the 10 year streak where we were an elite contending team, yeah well, the years before that were excruciating but we made it.
rinse and repeat.
Who the hell just "thumbed up" listening the game on the radio over watching it on tv?!?!
Is Stevie Wonder a Sens fan??
Lucic - Krejci - Horton
Marchand - Bergeron - Peverley
Pouliot - Kelly - Caron
Paille - Campbell - Clark
Chara - Corvo
Ference - Bartkowski
Mcquaid - Kampfer
Thomas
Rask
My grandma and I like to put the radio on to listen even when the game is on tv sometimes. Those tv broadcasters are so dull and say some of the dumbest things. She's not blind though.
HD on ch 487
Filatov or Alfie imo.
That is the proper defense pairings, not the previous one by Mat??
Every move Maclean makes seem to make a lot of sense and I can see the logic behind each one.
Butler on 3rd line seems a bit odd, but Smith and Foligno have been playing great, so I guess he can easily find some success there (kind of a 2a/2b line combo).
I don't know much about Filatov. Is his natural position LW? I notice we have him penciled in as RW these days and I wonder if this will hurt his game a little. I REALLY hope he starts putting points on the board as every night I watch him, I am amazed by his speed, vision, puck control...just great skills. He comes so close so often but this hasn't produced too many points yet. I'm hoping that once he pots a goal, that it will take off some pressure and he starts producing more.
Just reading a article that Philly needs to drop salary fot the young players to fit in under salary cap and are looking for a trading partner ..One name I hear is Scottie Hartnell i think that would give us a solid top 6 Hartnell could protect Zib
Filatov Spezza Alfredsson
Hartnell 6'2 210 Zibanjed 6'2 200 Michalek 6'2 225...
if they end up sending Da Costa down which they may very well do, that team is going to put up some goals...
for purely selfish entertainment, i'd like to see an opening night line up of:
spezza, filatov and 9mm
(chemistry w spezza may be better when healthy)
dacosta, alfie and zibby
(put the ole willy vet with the kids)
not likely obviously, but i think it would make things exciting...

Tookie,
thanks for responding,
I was worried you were one of those "throw the games" guys but not shellig out the $$$
fair enough
Why -- oh why -- oh why... would McLean even think of playing Rundblad with Kuba... but that's what he is doing tonight.
Gonchar-Cowen
Kuba-Rundblad
Lee-Borowiecki
How about Rundblad with Lee... at least he would have a fighting chance to have a decent game.
Filatov, Foligno and Michalek are LW
Alfredsson, Butler and Neil are RW
And I'm going to re-affirm that putting Gonchar and Rundblad on the same defensive pairing is recipe for disaster... Turnover galore.
Booooooo
No its not televised.
Not sure about that, Chicago, L.A, Pittsburgh, Washington, Tampa seem to be on the road to contending for a decade...
But on the flip side, Colorado, Florida, CBJ seem to never move, but alot is their own stupid fault, bad management!
What dillema is that??? One where we "screw over" one of our players causing another one of our players to decide then and there that he wasn't resigning??
Centre Ice 456 rogers HD 487...HESN
ok so I am seeing a trend here
Rundblad with Kuba, Gonchar, Karlsson = disaster!
or any combination of those four is trouble
something tells me the kid needs to go to bingo to learn some defense, and as good as Karlsson is, he needs to know he has responsibilites in his own end.
No hope for Kuba or Gonchar at this point.
And on that, we are stuck with Kuba, but honestly Gonchar does not look any better than last year, can we not get anything for him? anything at all?
Filatov has and will play either wing. either way, crazy how things have flipped, we used to be stacked on right wing and empty on the left.
alfie, havlat, hossa :-(
Do you think Rundblad would do better with Kuba?
i think two other great examples are philly and boston.
two teams using high end assets to re-stock their cupboards with talented youth while keeping a nucleas of talent together.
It's not just about keeping your high end players together. A big piece is getting enough high end players to start with that you can manage those assets in order to have a steady stream of replacements as necessary.
FYI: IT's NESN...New England Sports Network
Not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic Sandy. As far as I can tell, Kuba couldn't do any better if he was paired with Drew Doughty...
I say Rundblad with Phillips. Experience with inexperience. Offensive minded player with defensive minded player.
Lee/Gonchar can play with Cowen and Karlsson can play with Kuba.
All of this is IF Rundblad makes the team. Until someone volunteers to lock Kuba up in the trunk of an abandoned Caprice Classic, I'm pretty sure Rundblad will start the season in Bingo or Sweden.
Thanks my mistake

Zibanejad pretty much getting his 9 games in NHL to start.
WTF???
•Greening-Spezza-Filatov
•Michalek-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
•Foligno-Smith-Butler
•Condra-Konopka-Neil
They've got crashers, defensive responsibility, and skill balanced on the top 3 lines. I'd like to see Konopka sit and have Da Costa centre the 3rd line with Smith between Condra and Neil.
Gord Wilson is reporting Rask is starting Nets for boston
www.chilisports.strikehost.info
Nothing is guaranteed, but if the guys on the official Senators website and twitter are right and Bell's center ice shows the game, I will definitely stream it. I will update on the broadcast situation later, but for now the game doesn't show on my programming guide.
Depends who Boston puts out there, if its anything close to their final lineup, were toast.
if you have centre ice on bell or rogers u can watch it!
Is it on your programming guide?
Filatov is a right-handed shot. Foligno, Michalek are left. Right-handed shot usually means RW, except some players prefer playing on the off-wing because it allows them better shooting opportunities. That being said, defensively, and playmaking wise, playing your natural wing is usually more efficient.
Filatov could easily play the RW, and Foligno the LW.
Not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic Sandy. As far as I can tell, Kuba couldn't do any better if he was paired with Drew Doughty...
I was serious. You mentioned Rundblad would be a disaster with Gonchar... I say it will be worse with Kuba. We will see that tonight.
Boston is icing their top forwards (other than Seguin). What do you think Kuba/Rundblad will do against their 2nd line. Rundblad is learning a little more every game.. but he still has a long way to go. Kuba... well.. you know.

Team 1200 said tim thomas is in net
That's literally the best news I've heard all week.

I agree, that's a waaay worse scenario. But I would have never expected them to put those two together.. God help us if they ever try this in the reg season. It will make Phillips +/- from last year look amazing...
I will be interesting to watch guys like Cowen and Runblad vs the cup champs. This is the best lineup they will face.
Zibby's made the team for now (9games) at least. The more time he spends next Alfie is good for him.
Streamer broke that one Chirp!
Not quick enough! : )
HD feed is on 487, yay!
Enjoy the game boys and girls!
Liability, liability...
McLean and staff have a lot of work to do on both PP & PK -- which was decent last year... sucks for some reason this pre-season.
Are you referring to when we sat down on the bench?
Lmao
Bostons forecheck is sooo effective they dont give us a chance to...So many nervous passes in the first and then when the simple stuff wasn't working some guys tried to get too fancy...need to stick with the system..
When they chat about it non stop for the whole game, it seems it would have an impact, if anything, of making sure its on the "review" agenda...
also i think this is the year that all excuses for spezza will run dry. i think fans, media, coaching and management will collectively come to bear on him for a complete overall game to be presented on the ice.and im sure zibanejad with the way he is developing is going to start pushing from the second line pretty hard.
we'll be 0-82 if thats the case...
Boston 2-1, Cowen breaks it up like it aint no thang...him and lee have been by FAR our 2 best D...
Butler has been bad
me thinks its gonna be a long year sens fans!
I would add Anderson. But yeah, its fuckin pathetic.
If Rundblad needed to tip the scale in his favour, he fucked up...
I genuinely think this is him trying to do to much with far too little.
I seriously feel bad for him that he is stuck here for now(well as bad as I can feel for someone making millions)
Welcome to the new NHL, even Chara is embelishing.
Watch for a stunner, Sens win 2-1 despite being drastically out-shot.
So far tonight KUBA has looked worse than ever in a Sens uniform. F**k the guy is useless out there. Time to cut ties.
Last of all - All Hail Mighty Anderson! He's been stymieing the dicks in yellow&gold all night!
Other than the first PP goal.. Boston hasnt had too many shots on the PP...3 or 4 if i am not mistaken...Most of their shots have been 5 on 5 or on the pK :S..
Also... DONT JINX ANDY!
Alfie made them pay for it!
Does Zibanejad ook like a pro or what. I think this kid could turn out better than RNH. He looks like a man out there.
All hail Mr Anderson.
Fucking homer refs!
Cowan is a beast, our best D guy so far this year.
And GOAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAALLLL L!!!
well done, sir, well done.
Nice call on the come from behind win dude!!
You called it my friend.
Stay out of the box, draw penalties and we'll win more than we lose.
Where was the team during the first two periods? Regardless, great to come up with a win to go into Detroit.
Now, I littered the message board today with how Gonchar and Rundblad shouldn't be a pairing. This doesn't reflect on their skills individually (relax Round Leaf). But together, there's no disputing they are a liability. No, check that, A MAJOR LIABILITY.
If this game didn't prove me right, than Paul McLean's moustache is fake.
IN YOUR FACE TOOKIE!!!LOL
Not an attack at you... just pissed at some of the critics who are all over him for the little mistakes that EVERY player makes when they step into the NHL, but fail to notice that he is an absolute wizard with the puck.
I 100% agree though; Gonchar is a defensive liability as will be Rundblad for at least next season... they shouldn't be together. I did like Rundblad with Lee.
Outshot 40 - 20, we should have been "toast" said Tookie,
but Craig Anderson stole this game, all by his "standing on his head" performance.
Rundblad showed patience, confidence, and timing in scoring the winner.
We are slowly rebuilding, one small step at a time!
Rockin Robert
I feel the opposite way. Gponchar's not getting any better. He'll only get worse until he retires.
Same with Kuba, although even LESS people felt he would bounce back this year.
Such a shame, especially for a player of Gonchar's caliber.
