The Sens are down to just three games in the preseason and some tough decision lay ahead for new coach Paul MacLean. The battle for the second line centre position is still fairly wide open and Rundblad and Cowen are still in the mix for a spot on the blueline.
Both Cowen and Rundblad will get a chance to impress this afternoon in Newfoundland. It will also be an important game for Zibanejad as he gets a chance on the team's top line with Alfredsson and Greening. Da Costa has looked sharp the last couple so it's time for Zibanejad to step up and show that he is ready now.
Here is how the line up is expected to look according to Sylvain St. Laurent on Twitter.
- Greening-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
- Hoffman-Locke-Butler
- Dziurzynski-Smith-Neil
- Parrish-Grant-Cowick
- Cowen-Karlsson
- Phillips-Rundblad
- Gryba-Carkner
Alex Auld is expected to play the full game for the Sens.
Remember it's a 4:00 PM start from St. John's today. The game is available on CBC. For more information on the Kraft Hockeyville event you can check out this site.
Defense pairings look truly exciting !
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't help but think of Maddoxx making fun of kids artwork whenever I see some.
maclaren's landing usually has a boat load of screens (on elgin)
It was a great weekend of Hockey. With the Sens playing today and again at home tomorrow against the Leafs, it's no doubt they are saving a few more of the vets for tomorrows game. The Sens have something to prove after that first L against the Leafs.
All the talk is about Rundblad and rightfully so. We knew the competition would be on and he'd need to push Cowen for that last spot. So far, Cowen has been lights out and I would expect will be named to the opening night roster. Rundblad has so much skill he just needs to get the confidence on the NA ice and the speed that goes with it. I agreed with McGuire's comments on the radio today, he'll do best seeing time in Bingo, not heading back to Sweden where he feels comfortable.
I also think Da Costa is showing he deserves the spot as well.
Go Sens Go!!!
Granted, Don Brennan is a terrible journalist but the article in the sun that I assume you are referencing, whilst having a sensationalist 1st paragraph, really doesn't come close to doing what you are suggesting.
1. As nice as Filatov-Spezza- Butler is skill wise, there's just no grit on the line. Someone needs to be willing to go in the corners, and for that I think Filatov would be the odd man out in favour of someone like Michalek, Foligno or even Greening/Condra.
2. Kuba is not worthy of this roster. His constant pairing with Karlsson is just hurting Karlsson as they are too weak defensively and he is just too soft. Time to bring on Cowen-Karlsson ... glad to see they finally are tonight!
3. Da Costa is my 2nd line C if not Foligno. Zibanejad has shown some nice flashes, but I see him more as winger right now and I think Da Costa has proven he is more capable of handling the NHL 2nd line C role right now. Hope to see both on the team in the near future though.
4. Michalek has found his wheels, the rest of the league better be on notice. May be worth 1 more try with Spezza, but Da Costa-Alfie-Mic halek wouldn't be bad either.
5. Pageau is a fun underdog story, but he is years away at best.
6. Hoffman is a pretty good depth player that could fill in nicely throughout the season when injuries strike.
7. Zack Smith could be the best 3rd line C this organization has ever seen. He's not there yet, but his combination of grit, vision, determination and offensive skill will make it much easier to roll 3-4 lines.
All in all, I feel really good about the final product the organization will ice this season and I am even more confident we will compete for the playoffs! GO SENS GO!!!
Zack Smith went his final 38 games as a Senator last year without scoring and has a total of 6 career goals. If he struggles he has potential to be a healthy scratch if others are playing well.
So you'd sit Smith before Konopka, Winchester, Regin? He's still developing as well, and needs to cut out the dumb penalties of the last few years first, but I don't think you'll see him as a healthy scratch too often if at all.
as much as there is a logjam at the back, there is quite the logjam upfront too alongwith a bevy of top six contentders, in no specific order:
filatov, spezza, butler, alfie, michalek, foligno, regin,da costa, zibanejad ,condra, greenin g,smith, neil,wi nchester, konopk a. it would have been really interesting if silfverberg decided to stick and play camp this year.
im really excited to see neil-smith-kono pka though. imagine letting those guys loose against the leafs.
Hey Streamer
Me and a couple of guys at work would be interested. Due to the time of the game and the popularity of CBC, I would imagine it will get hit hard with a tonne of traffic etc.
If you are willing, I would tune in.
Really appreciate it!!!!
Possibly. I think up front there are a lot of guys who are going to be healthy scratches if they aren't playing well. Even guys like Filatov and Butler need to produce or they will be sitting. Lets face it, 2 forwards need to sit as things stand now and if we have a 3rd line of Regin, Folingo and Condra then Smith might be a fourth line guy competeing with Greening, Konapka, Neil and Winchester for ice time.
I'm not saying I don't like Smith, however he does need to produce more then he did last year to stay in the lineup.
It would be worth a look, but I think with Zibby his offensive game is what still needs to develop. I'd definitely like to see 1 game with them together though, maybe along with Alfie or Butler.
It's too bad there isn't room for both Da Costa and Zibanejad.
I don't think a 3rd liner will be hurt too much for not scoring when they do the other things Smith does well. I get it though, and it does makes sense that there is just no room for Winchester on this team anymore.
I think Regin/Greening/ Konopka may be the main healthy scratches to start with though, and I could see Filatov getting games off here and there when he's inconsistent.
I would hope in one of the two last pre-season games against the Leafs & Bruins.. that McLean would re-unite - Spezza, Butler & Greening. See if they still have the chemistry they did at the end of last season.
God I hate listening to Bob Cole. How excited will he get today when the Leafs are not playing?
"Gilmour picks up the puck, uhhh I mean 93 from the Leafs, make that number 93 from the Ottawa Sens"
You hear anything about Petersson only played 1 game and 8 mins ..did he hurt his back again ?
http://www.mikazibanejadofficial.com/index.html
Looks like Zibby's got his own website.
http://video.jets.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=96&id=124615
Hope hes doing well after hurting his shoulder.
Any news on when we'll see the first big cut from camp?
CUT KUBA!!!
PLEASE CUT KUBA!!!
Seriously we have easily 9 defensemen that are already better than he is, I am including Rundblad, Cowen, Gyrba, Borowiecki. Please Murray/MacLean, if you have one once of sympathy for your fan base, cut the Tub a sh_t! Kuba!
He was out right horrible last year, and is picking up exactly where he left off last year.
we cannot keep Philips, Gonchar and Kuba, and Kuba is the worst of them all!
J Cowen 2G 1A = 3pts
M. Michalek 2G 1A = 3pts
N. Filatov 0G 3A = 3pts
P. Regin 0G 3A = 3 pts
Z. Smith 2G 0A = 2 pts
C. Neil 2G 0A = 2 pts
B Lee 1G 1A = 2pts
N. Foligno 0G 2A = 2pts
S. Da Costa 0G 2A = 2 pts
M. Zibanejad 1G 0A = 1 pt
F. Kuba 0G 1A = 1 pt
E. Condra 0G 1A = 1 pt
J. Spezza 0G 1A = 1 pt
D. Rundblad 0G 1A = 1 pt
The problem with Kuba, is he had skill. But his leg injury took that away.
If Kuba is going to continuously make rookie mistakes but at a pro's salary, it doesn't make sense to keep him.
At this point, albeit early on, he seems sluggish at the back. If he can improve his speed and stop gripping his stick too tightly, perhaps he could improve.
Question is. Do we wait to see what if?
We have a lot of hungry young guys... my bet is the decision will be made by them.
I 100% agree that if we cannot trade him, then it would be just as well to demote him to the minors. However so long as Murray and also Melnyk's pocketbook believe there may be a chance to trade away the salary or god-fobid get a tiny bit of any sort of return for him, then they will try to "showcase" him for several weeks at least and see how it pans out.
EDIT: Because, you know, you don't have enough reasons already!
Not Filip Kuba
We've seen it around the league, Redden, Souray etc.
So why doesn't this happen? Is it because EM doesn't want to eat another salary?
It just baffles me considering we have 8/9 dmen!
C'mon BM demote that over priced fuck!
Hysterical! Hahaha.
"Filip Kuba's presence alone seems like a fast track to Nail Yakupov."
Cutting Kuba would be the Sens below the salary cap floor -- would it not?
Kuba is from Quebec!? jk -- Thanks for the laugh!
its not like spezza and butler aren't immune from the corners either
filatov-spezza- butler
michalek-da costa/regin-alf ie
Sexton?
Cheechoo? (j/k)
Post of the day good sir!
If they are serious about getting Yakupov, then give Kuba 28 minutes a night!
good question but I do not thinks so,
besides give a raise to someone who deserves it!
and that Kuba quote was a good laugh thanks
Cowen & Filatov's salaries bring us up high enough to make up for it.
When you see a rookie Nathan Beaulieu playing over 25 minutes, you can deduce, that they are weak at the defense position, so this is a break for Chris Campoli !
Rockin Robert
Great move by the Habs, especially with Markov slow to return. I'm surprised he was able to get such a nice salary last minute like that, but well deserved. I'd still take him over Kuba. Makes it just a bit harder to hate the Habs.
Just because you clearly want a Canadian team in it doesn't mean that no one else cares about those two teams. The winter classic is there to generate interest in AMERICA. The Rags and Flyers have two really awesome fan bases regardless if you like the teams or not.
Sorry for jumping all over this, but what you said was STUUUUUUUPID.
Keep it clean Newfoundland... no London repeat... keep the screech at home!

I'm not sure how he can say that Clouston didn't play him. Cheechoo was given many opportunities and did not take advantage of them. While he may have been a good guy in the locker room, he didn't have enough success to warrant more ice time.
@xD - Check out CBC.ca, the stream is pretty good right now.
Ugh, as soon as I saw Ron McClean, all I can picture him is waaassssted off his face, shirtless, in Victoria.
Cannot unsee, Ron.

thank you so much. Unfortunately CBC.ca streams does not work in Poland

You don't have to worry about Newfoundlanders doing anything like what happened in London. They have to be the friendliest people in Canada.
He said he was told by the coach they wanted too go with youth thats why his mins were cut back ...
According to "that other site" it's:
Winnipeg Jets
Ladd - Little - Wheeler
Kane - Scheifele - Klingberg
Forney - Maxwell - McArdle
Aliu - Cormier - Bodie
Chiarot - Enstrom
Redmond - Sol
Hainsey - Flood
You know what? Smack me upside the head for being the eternal optimist that always has so much faith in humanity but...
It's a gag as old as the ages, slapstick dudes slipping on banana peels. Has it occurred to anyone that someone may want to throw a banana on the ice during a shootout regardless of the color of the player?
I mean frig. Dudes threw waffles on the ice last season, no-one ever made it out to be hatred for the white man...
Just saying could be a stupid stunt but no racial anything intended behind it.
http://youtu.be/xW9Sp-WndwA
True, but if Waffles and Chicken got thrown at a black player, then there'd be something to talk about! lol
This must be that trolling thing I've heard about :) Everyone knows the strength of Karlsson's game is on offence and yes there are improvements to be made in his defensive game.
The kid is absolutely fantastic and among the elite offensive dmen in the league, you get the bad with the good.
Auld things considered.
I think Rundblad just needs some time in the AHL and Murray should make room for him a month or two into the season to be on the NHL roster.
This is by far their worst game of the pre-season.
Now we know why Winnipeg pick Schielffe (sp?) -- what a great young player.
They can't pass... all of them look slow.. being outskated on just about every shift. I thought the coaches were working on the skating with this team?
Winnipeg came to play.... Sens must have had too much screech last night. LOL
Spezza makes this team. Period.
You want your team to try to get back into the game.. and Neil takes a stupid penalty.
Alex Auld is having 'cramping'. Also known as 'no defense'.
In related news, Phillips is done for the night already too.
I was getting worried... Bob Cole is probably a contributing factor.
Rundblad isn't ready yet. I just wish our 6th was better than Kuba/Carkner.
Wouldn't be the first time he's lulled me to sleep.
Did you really expect Rundblad to come over and play in his 3rd NHL game and not yet be adapted to the NHL game. Smaller ice, more forechecking, more physical.
I'm sure it will take time.. but the kid has to play to learn does he not?
Hey Zib.... scored on the PP. 2 - 1.
Good goal by the swedish connection..
Still time to score the tying goal. And the winner.
Jets have been pretty bad in the 3rd the last few games. Good sign for the Sens.
Liking what I see of Cowick.
Nice goal by the Jets.
Really do you think he is the only player on the team that did not impress... he's been better than some of them.
I like this. Zibanejad and Rundblad look really freakin good.
Alfie - Hoffman - Zibanejad
Rundblad - Karlssonn
I like this line!
Is there a suspension for fighting after the game?
Now if they would have played the whole game like they did the 3rd period.. they might have had a different outcome.
Good showing by McKenna to come in cold like that. A couple of nice saves.
Pretty sad showing by most sens. Cowen is a beast and Gryba deserves some games in the NHL this year. Zibanejad keeping himself very much in this tight race for 2C, glad to see it won't default to Regin.
Have a good night all!
He should at least get the 9 game tryout at the start of the season.
I like Zibanejad for the first seconds of his shifts, but he seems to gas out fast. I wonder if this kid concentrated too much on gaining that crucial 10 pounds this summer, and neglected his cardio.
I was very pleased to see such good chemistry on the powerplay: Rundblad and Zibanejad looked calm and poised throughout the entire 3rd.
Rundblad can't learn anything more in the SEL. He needs the NA game.. so either Ottawa or Bingo would be best. It's up to the coaches to try to help him along.
Kuba. Off this team. Any means necessary.
