Sens and Jets From Newfoundland

The Ottawa Senators will go head to head with the Winnipeg Jets in this year's Hockeyville game being played at the Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland.

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Sens forward Colin Greening who hails from St. John's and will skate on the Sens top line with Zibanejad and Alfredsson.

The Sens are down to just three games in the preseason and some tough decision lay ahead for new coach Paul MacLean. The battle for the second line centre position is still fairly wide open and Rundblad and Cowen are still in the mix for a spot on the blueline.

Both Cowen and Rundblad will get a chance to impress this afternoon in Newfoundland. It will also be an important game for Zibanejad as he gets a chance on the team's top line with Alfredsson and Greening. Da Costa has looked sharp the last couple so it's time for Zibanejad to step up and show that he is ready now.

Here is how the line up is expected to look according to Sylvain St. Laurent on Twitter.

Anybody working in the downtown core like myself feel like catching the game somewhere. Won't be much in the way of hockey crowds like a nighttime game would have. Just the usual happy hour crowds. Also not sure what a decent place would be for checking out the game downtown. My sports bars are in the west end. Since this game starts at 4pm, I plan to skip out around 345 or so and hit up a place downtown. Market, Elgin....Sparks ? Any ideas anyone?

Hey Folks

It was a great weekend of Hockey. With the Sens playing today and again at home tomorrow against the Leafs, it's no doubt they are saving a few more of the vets for tomorrows game. The Sens have something to prove after that first L against the Leafs.

All the talk is about Rundblad and rightfully so. We knew the competition would be on and he'd need to push Cowen for that last spot. So far, Cowen has been lights out and I would expect will be named to the opening night roster. Rundblad has so much skill he just needs to get the confidence on the NA ice and the speed that goes with it. I agreed with McGuire's comments on the radio today, he'll do best seeing time in Bingo, not heading back to Sweden where he feels comfortable.

I also think Da Costa is showing he deserves the spot as well.

Fun games on the weekend. I was lucky enough to take in Friday's prolonged game, and here are a few things I found:

1. As nice as Filatov-Spezza- Butler is skill wise, there's just no grit on the line. Someone needs to be willing to go in the corners, and for that I think Filatov would be the odd man out in favour of someone like Michalek, Foligno or even Greening/Condra.

2. Kuba is not worthy of this roster. His constant pairing with Karlsson is just hurting Karlsson as they are too weak defensively and he is just too soft. Time to bring on Cowen-Karlsson ... glad to see they finally are tonight!

3. Da Costa is my 2nd line C if not Foligno. Zibanejad has shown some nice flashes, but I see him more as winger right now and I think Da Costa has proven he is more capable of handling the NHL 2nd line C role right now. Hope to see both on the team in the near future though.

My thinking exactly - I like Da Costa as a center and Zibby can start his career as a bruising winger. He can really hit to get guys off the puck. Greening really impressed me in Saturday's game.

4. Michalek has found his wheels, the rest of the league better be on notice. May be worth 1 more try with Spezza, but Da Costa-Alfie-Mic halek wouldn't be bad either.

5. Pageau is a fun underdog story, but he is years away at best.

6. Hoffman is a pretty good depth player that could fill in nicely throughout the season when injuries strike.

7. Zack Smith could be the best 3rd line C this organization has ever seen. He's not there yet, but his combination of grit, vision, determination and offensive skill will make it much easier to roll 3-4 lines.

All in all, I feel really good about the final product the organization will ice this season and I am even more confident we will compete for the playoffs! GO SENS GO!!!

Also I think Da Costa has shown the offensive creativity and playmaking that makes me think he should be slotted in as the 2nd line c to start the season. Foligno just doesn't have enough offensive upside to center that line. Foligno is a great third liner who can do a little bit of everything.

We all know what Michalek is capable of if he can stay healthy... Let's hope his knees hold up for a full season this year. When he's in the line-up going at full tilt, he's a very good player.

hmm...i think zibanejad would be better suited still to 2nd center. if he is not ready for it right now, there is no harm in a little more development to ensure his potential. the sens did the same move with regin and to me it seems that it messed up regin's game to some extent. also, i think regardless of grit/toughness, filatov-spezz-b utler is definitely worth the risk. a full speed michalek with spezza is a pretty tempting too.
as much as there is a logjam at the back, there is quite the logjam upfront too alongwith a bevy of top six contentders, in no specific order:
filatov,spezza,butler,alfie,michalek,foligno,regin,da costa,zibanejad ,condra,greenin g,smith,neil,wi nchester,konopk a. it would have been really interesting if silfverberg decided to stick and play camp this year.

im really excited to see neil-smith-kono pka though. imagine letting those guys loose against the leafs.

Possibly. I think up front there are a lot of guys who are going to be healthy scratches if they aren't playing well. Even guys like Filatov and Butler need to produce or they will be sitting. Lets face it, 2 forwards need to sit as things stand now and if we have a 3rd line of Regin, Folingo and Condra then Smith might be a fourth line guy competeing with Greening, Konapka, Neil and Winchester for ice time.

I'm not saying I don't like Smith, however he does need to produce more then he did last year to stay in the lineup.

It would be worth a look, but I think with Zibby his offensive game is what still needs to develop. I'd definitely like to see 1 game with them together though, maybe along with Alfie or Butler.

It's too bad there isn't room for both Da Costa and Zibanejad.

I don't think a 3rd liner will be hurt too much for not scoring when they do the other things Smith does well. I get it though, and it does makes sense that there is just no room for Winchester on this team anymore.

I think Regin/Greening/ Konopka may be the main healthy scratches to start with though, and I could see Filatov getting games off here and there when he's inconsistent.

I would hope in one of the two last pre-season games against the Leafs & Bruins.. that McLean would re-unite - Spezza, Butler & Greening. See if they still have the chemistry they did at the end of last season.

I got a message from a buddy of mine who said he saw Jesse Winchester at Pesto's (some sandwich place near bells corners). Said he looked good...didn't have an arm sling or anything. Might be a good sign for the kid.

Whoever said get Karlsson off of that awful pairing with Kuba is right, Kuba needs to go away! Karlsson would play much better with his offense edge if he had a solid pairing with someone who is a stay at home defenseman.....

Kuba.

The problem with Kuba, is he had skill. But his leg injury took that away.

If Kuba is going to continuously make rookie mistakes but at a pro's salary, it doesn't make sense to keep him.

At this point, albeit early on, he seems sluggish at the back. If he can improve his speed and stop gripping his stick too tightly, perhaps he could improve.

Question is. Do we wait to see what if?

We have a lot of hungry young guys... my bet is the decision will be made by them.

I hate to tell you guys but we've gone this far with Kuba, there is virtually zero chance that he is not on the starting roster this year.

I 100% agree that if we cannot trade him, then it would be just as well to demote him to the minors. However so long as Murray and also Melnyk's pocketbook believe there may be a chance to trade away the salary or god-fobid get a tiny bit of any sort of return for him, then they will try to "showcase" him for several weeks at least and see how it pans out.

The only thing that I can't figure out, is why doesn't BM demote and bury Kuba's salary in Bingo?

We've seen it around the league, Redden, Souray etc.
So why doesn't this happen? Is it because EM doesn't want to eat another salary?

filatov-spezza- butler is a great top line. the way our defense is shaping up with great puck movement and speed, this line perfectly suits our temp. you dont need grinders on every line.

its not like spezza and butler aren't immune from the corners either

I'm not sure how he can say that Clouston didn't play him. Cheechoo was given many opportunities and did not take advantage of them. While he may have been a good guy in the locker room, he didn't have enough success to warrant more ice time.

Best play in Ottawa zone at end of 1 period... Cowen Gryba. Not good. Karlson and rundblad are WEEAAK. Phillips OK but seems slow. Carkner must feel the pressure, seems tight and non creative.

As much as people want to rip Karlsson for his defense, Karlsson's partner is at fault even more-so knowing that Karlsson is going to take those risks.

The kid is absolutely fantastic and among the elite offensive dmen in the league, you get the bad with the good.

For a televised game we should have brought 2 or 3 more roster players ..Folingo Spezza MM9 etc .. Just a bunch of bingo players and that have no chance too make the big club getting badly out played ..Considering 3 games left maybe today was a great day to start putting the line up together to get them to gel ...

My thoughts on Zibanejad from what I've seen. Boy oh boy does he have talent, but it looks like consistency might be an issue and I think a season in Sweden or in the AHL will make a big difference in that area.

I think Rundblad just needs some time in the AHL and Murray should make room for him a month or two into the season to be on the NHL roster.

Being outshot 23 - 9 near the middle of the 2nd period. No shots on net on that PP.

This is by far their worst game of the pre-season.

Now we know why Winnipeg pick Schielffe (sp?) -- what a great young player.

They can't pass... all of them look slow.. being outskated on just about every shift. I thought the coaches were working on the skating with this team?

Winnipeg came to play.... Sens must have had too much screech last night. LOL

Did you really expect Rundblad to come over and play in his 3rd NHL game and not yet be adapted to the NHL game. Smaller ice, more forechecking, more physical.
I'm sure it will take time.. but the kid has to play to learn does he not?

Let I've said... let's the young guys play... Rundblad will only learn by playing.

Now if they would have played the whole game like they did the 3rd period.. they might have had a different outcome.

Good showing by McKenna to come in cold like that. A couple of nice saves.

Rundblad definitely improved as the game went on, but he's still very prone to trying to do too much. Great moves at the end of the 3rd there! Should be interesting to see how the last week goes.

Pretty sad showing by most sens. Cowen is a beast and Gryba deserves some games in the NHL this year. Zibanejad keeping himself very much in this tight race for 2C, glad to see it won't default to Regin.

After that third period showing by Rundblad, and assuming he starts to play this way for 40-60 minutes in each of the last 3 pre-season games, who do you keep? Runblad or Cowen? If they both keep playing like this, I don't see how the organization can justify giving a guy like Kuba icetime; even if it makes financial sense.

I like Zibanejad for the first seconds of his shifts, but he seems to gas out fast. I wonder if this kid concentrated too much on gaining that crucial 10 pounds this summer, and neglected his cardio.

I think the Sens only iced 4 guys with over 40 games logged in the NHL (Karlsson, Alfredsson, Phillips and Neil), so its not very surprising that the Jets (who were basically only missing Burmestrov and Byfuglien) came out on top.

I was very pleased to see such good chemistry on the powerplay: Rundblad and Zibanejad looked calm and poised throughout the entire 3rd.

Rundblad can't learn anything more in the SEL. He needs the NA game.. so either Ottawa or Bingo would be best. It's up to the coaches to try to help him along.

I can't express in words how angry I am that Rundblad may be held off this team to make room for Kuba. There is no defending Kuba's spot on this team. The whole "its not your money / don't want to waste 4 million on a minor leaguer" excuse is the most common, but its laughable. What will Kuba do in Ottawa to earn his pay? Be caught flatfooted on an odd man rush? Turn over the puck? Cause a budding young Swedish prospect to become disgruntled, go back to Sweden for another season where he's already learned all that he can?

Kuba. Off this team. Any means necessary.
