Game Day- Sens Return to SBP

After a long summer, NHL hockey returns to Scotiabank Place tonight.

It's still just preseason hockey but it will be a good test for the Sens as they take on the defending Stanley Cup Champion, Boston Bruins, who will be without Zdeno Chara.  Puck drops just after 7:30 PM.

The Sens will feature a line up a little different than the one we saw in Toronto the other night.  Seven guys will be making their second appearance of the preseason while vets like Spezza and Alfredsson will again sit.

Here is how the Sens lined up at the skate this morning.

  • Filatov-Zibanejad-Butler
  • Foligno-Regin-Condra
  • Prince-Da Costa-O'Brien
  • Daugavins-Locke-Parrish

  • Cowen-Gonchar
  • Phillips-Lee
  • Borowiecki- Rundblad

Craig Anderson is expected to get the start for the home side and will split duties with Alex Auld.

Will be interesting to watch how the top three centres perform in this one.  Corey Locke is a bit of a long shot but the other three are all expected to be in the mix for that second line centre position.  The performance we see from Zibanejad, DaCosta and Regin could go a long way towards deciding who gets that coveted roster spot.

Still plenty of tickets for people that are thinking of heading down to the game tonight.  It will also be available on TSN for those of you that can't make the trip down to SBP.

Anyone know if Lessard has been dragged behind the shed and shot? Did anyone respond after the stupid hit on Filitov? would be nice to know that somebody skated over and slashed him in the face at least. What a waste of space, i can't believe that he takes up a roster spot, even in training camp.

Can't wait to watch the game tonight, Cowen looks like a different player, not talking about the offensive side either. I was really impressed with how "big" he played in his own end.

Go Sens Go!

really hoping zibanejad gets the 2nd line centre spot but i think it will go to regin. Also hopin for Rundblad to crack a roster spot.

At least we dont have to listen to those horrible toronto announcers tonight.

People keep talking about Chara and great and valuable he is. And justifiably so. But for those of us who remember, he was almost a throw in in the Yashin deal. He was big, but lanky and clumsy on the island, and really for the first year or two in Ottawa was not a top 4 D.
Cowen, at the same age looks much better then Chara did. Better skater, and puck handler and composed... again AT THE SAME AGE.
Will Cowen evolve near as good as Chara has developed, we can only hope, but it is extremely promissing.

Looking at the lines tonight you would think Zibanejad has a slight edge. He is clearly the #1 centre tonight considering who is wingers are.

May be reading too much into the combinations though.

My thoughts (for what that's worth):

Regin: Will be 2nd line center unless he plays horribly and Costa or Z play very well (simply due to his 1-way contract). Costa & Z will see some NHL ice time during the season, but will be developing in Bing.

Runblad: Still needs to cook for a little in Bing. Has nice skillset, but WAY too many mistakes in the few games I've watched. Sending Runblad down for a month or 2 (like they did to Karlsson), might do wonders to his game.

I think we can see what the starting 1st line will be (minus Z, add in spezza).

Michalek/Regin/Alfy second line? (Any news on 9MM's injury?)

I'm still curious how the defence will pair up...

+2 #9 Prusek 2011-09-21 09:44
I'd like it if Regin would step up, however I only watched 10 minutes of the Leafs game and he looked horrible on the fourth goal when Phenuf faked a shot and walked around him.

I'm interested to see what Lee can do tonight as well. I'd like to see him continue to develop and maybe make a solid pairing with Philips. Sure he's not the best draft selection, however he is still a younger Sens asset that I want to develop. I also think Runblad might need some time in Bingo and I'd rather see Lee play and improve then Kuba play.

I am not sold on Zibanejad playing in the NHL next year, he seems to have all the tools, but one more year where he is the go to guy in SEL, vs the pressure of being 2nd line on a weak Ottawa team, might be better for him

Brian Lee is the victim of unfair expectations, if he was judged SOLELY on his play everyone would be happier with him. But being the people we are we can't help but judge him based on where he went in the draft and who he went before (the names Kopitar and Staal appear here). It's not Lee's fault he was picked where he was, it's our scouting staff at the time.

I thought Lee was consistently good towards the back end of last season on a blueline that was chopping and changing virtually every game. I think he deserves a spot in the top 6 and will get one (which probably means Carkner sitting as no.7). It will be interesting to see how he develops. A problem I forsee for him further down the road with the Sens is that he may become the prime victim of the logjam on D we will have if the prospects develop as we want them too.
Quote

+5 #14 Johne 2011-09-21 10:53
@The Apostle

Completely agreed, I even view Lee as a disappointment due to the draft and the expectations of him being a good PMD.

But the fact is, Lee has changed his game to become a reliable dman no matter who he is paired with and shows some physicality. I think he fits perfect on this team as a 5-6 dman and playing a bigger role when the team needs him to (injuries and PKs).

He should of been a late 1st rounder or a 2nd rounder and no one would think less of him.
Quote

+2 #15 The Apostle 2011-09-21 11:01
Although the logjam might not develop in time to hurt him. Kuba is gone in 1 year at the most, Gonchar 2 and Phillips 3.

Cowen I think is a regular this year. Rundblad is a regular next year (with some playing time this year). I honestly don't see Gryba and Wire Cock ever being regulars on this team, but if they do it won't be for at least 2 more seasons. Borowiecki likewise won't be a regular on this team within 2 years so a Brian Lee shaped gap might come up.

Whilst I definitely don't think he should be the first dman to be moved he might actually be an attractive piece at the deadline. His contract is up at the end of the year and he could justifiably think he has a better shot in some other city rather than resigning.

You have to think he is more likely to be moved than Phillips, Karlsson, Cowen and most of the other prospects. You could also argue that he's better trade bait than either Kuba or Gonchar because of the contract situation.
Quote

+4 #16 Johne 2011-09-21 11:09
I've come to expect that Lee will never make a highlight reel or put up a ton of points, but he won't be the guy that you can blame a loss on either. I'm not sure that his trade value is enough to warrant a trade, especially since no one wanted him off waivers last season. The only people that will appreciate a player like Lee are Sens fans.

I think Gonchar is likely the next dman shipped out, he had a really really down season last year and there is no doubt in my mind that he will rebound from that and be a hot commodity to have come trade deadline.

But then the question is, does he help us or hurt us by trading Gonchar when he is on top of his game.

Wow, was I close to predicting that score or what, I thought I would refrain from replying on game night, since people were probably having hissy fits over the loss to Toronto, especially after having talked about it all day, on how the Sens were gonna win easily...

Jabs 6-3 Ottawa...
Tookie 5-3 Leafs...

How in God's green earth could you give 6 goals to Ottawa, damn I though giving them 3 was alot...

Anyways, Cowen did impress, not in his defensive zone but on the attack, that was a nice pinch, good timing...

Any predictions for tonight?

I'll go with 3-0 Boston.

+2 #18 The Apostle 2011-09-21 11:15
If we can trade Gonchar we should. We aren't going to achieve much of anything in the two years left on his contract (not because of him, but because we aren't serious contenders). I would like to see him moved for somebody/a pick that has the potential to be helping us in 3 years time.

One of the counter arguments to that is that with Kuba and Gonchar gone we have, potentially, a very young and relatively inexperienced blueline. But that's what UFAs are for.

+4 #19 Johne 2011-09-21 11:24
@The apostle

lets say hypothetically that this season or next season we are in 7th place come February with a pretty comfortable gap from the last playoff spot and Gonchar has been a key factor to our success, do you shop Gonchar or continue on with a playoff run with his services? I guess it really would depend on his value to other teams out there. And he does have that NTC...
Quote

+2 #20 Patrick 2.0 2011-09-21 11:27
With Karlsson and Rundblad on D, we need cowen and lee's defensive skills on our back ends IMO. That's not to knock Karlsson or Rundblad (I love both their games), its just that we don't have many more prospects as defensively responsible as Lee has become.

Philips and Gonchar only have a couple of years left and will need to be replaced. I'm really hoping that Lee gets a good chance to showcase his skills this year so that he can either prove himself or get traded. I think its unfair that he's been the black sheep for this long.
Quote

+2 #21 The Apostle 2011-09-21 11:33
Well my answer is obviously going to be coloured by the fact that I don't think that hypothesis is likely (this season only, I don't think it's out the realms of possibility that we make the playoffs in 2012/13.)

The boring stock NHL speak answer is that it depends on what is being offered.

I would imagine that in the scenario you suggested everybody in management would be so fucking shocked (this season) by what is happening that they would take a run at the playoffs with Gonchar in situ. If our potential playoff appearance is less certain I think we shop him. If we are definitely out of the playoffs come deadline it's easy, we shop him and see if he'll waive the NTC.

Thats a far fetched scenario but lets play with it...

You shop him for draft picks or younger players, in keeping with the rebuild...IF were sitting comfortably in 7th and making the playoffs, Gonchar is not going to win us a Cup, make the run without him and continue with the trend of gathering draft picks and young assets.

You get the best of both worlds, playoff appearence while adding picks or young players for next year.

I certainly see a few young defencemen who are RFA;s and don't get NHL playing time looking for offers with other teams. If they have a good year in the A they may get decent offers from other teams which Ottawa may or may not match. It will be tough to get them to sign any qualifying offer. The logjam needs to get broken with some defence for forward trades IMO.

Good call on the game tookie. Great to hear you finally noticed Cowen, as I've been saying he'll be on the team this year and may possibly be our best all around Dman.

I actually hate the Chara comparison, because I think Cowen is more offensively skilled. I see Cowen as an almost Redden(in his prime)/Chara hybrid.

For tonight I'll go with 4-2 Ottawa, just for the fun of it.

I would rather have Lee THAN Kuba any day. At least Lee has been showing improvement, not complaining and showed to be a good partner for Phillips at the end of last season.

Kuba on the other hand it appears hopeless enough for him, if Gomez was on the last year of his contract I'd make that trade any day and that says a lot.

Given the fact that most people here seem to believe that Kuba and Gonchar having bounceback years and becoming attractive at the deadline is feasible, it's certainly no reach that Lee might garner some interest. It won't have gone unnoticed that he appears to have matured, couple that with a solid first six/seven months of the season and I can see some GMs kicking tyres.

If that was the case Alfie wouldn't be around either.

Campoli just got stuck in a numbers game league wide as well as a really strong youth movement. I'd take him over Kuba for sure. He saved Carkner's butt so many times the last 2 years.

Miguel waiving and being sent down are two different things. A player on a one way can get waived without getting sent down but they can't get sent down without getting waived. The Sens wouldn't have been able to call up Lee once getting sent down without risking another team picking him up at half price (with the Sens paying the other half) so rather than bury him and not be able to use him without risking being on the hook for half they just kept him with the big club.

Benoit Pouliot-Patrice Bergeron-Jamie Tardif
Jordan Caron-Chris Kelly-Chris Clark
Max Sauve-Tyler Seguin-Jared Knight
Lane MacDermid-Ryan Spooner-Jamie Arniel/Shawn Thornton

Andrew Ference-Colby Cohen
Matt Bartkowski-Adam McQuaid
David Warsofsky-Dougi e Hamilton/Steven Kampfer

Tuukka Rask
Anton Khudobin

What do you guys think about the matchups? I think both teams are going with a significant amount of younger players with speed and skill up front, rather than veteran presence. Expect a lot of turnovers with fast breaks the other way. But our D are more experienced. Goalies could be a wash but I give Rask the edge. This should be entertaining.

Can you not read properly? Do you know what the word "close" means?

The funny part is you actually put it in bold, LOL!

Put the crack pipe down and get hooked on phonics.

I know there's been a lot of debate about who are top 6 defence are gonna be. Although I would love to see Runbland play over say, I dunno, KUBA, I feel like this is how it will shake out when the puck drops October 7th:

Cowan-Gonchar
Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee

Carks

Runbland-AHL-First call up when Kuba gets injured.

PS- Going to Detroit for the season opener, will represent the SENSARMY well.

That was kinda where I was going, I think our forwards should match up well. I gave Rask the uppper hand, and our D the edge. I never thought of Coaching, but B town for sure, ours is still a ? really even though I do have high expectations (like everyone else). It'll be messy, but fast and entertaining.

I agree, it will be fast, lots of young legs up front for both teams. I think we will be hard pressed to score again, especially vs the stingy defensive style the Bruins play.

Our FW group is still very unpolished, its hard to think they will score vs Rask.

Unless Cowen goes beast mode again!

Have you guys seen this video? It's Shanahan explaining the hit to the head and boarding rule changes. Definitely on the dry side, but overall I think it's a good job in showing the difference between the legal and illegal ones.

Zibanejad definitely gets a chance to show his all tonight. I hope he comes out skating a lot more.

Hopefully Da Costa gets a shot with real NHL scorers next game. Only fair if they're all up for the same position.

Standouts to me tonight: Regin, Condra and Zibby with the OT winner and his moves all night long, just wow.

Now Regin vs Zibanejad for the 2nd line C. I think Regin gets it, but I've been wow'd by Mika too many times to think he should go back overseas.

A+ to Gonchar, Lee, Cowen, Regin and Foligno for their effort tonight! Condra showed he's here to stay. Great OT winner by Zibanejad. He played a better 3rd period that early on in the game. Anderson and Auld will be a solid combo this year!

That was a fun game despite the low score. Some good goaltending on both sides.

Condra, Lee, Foligno and Da Costa stood out the most for me. Zibanejad definitely finished strong.

Lee is definitely going to be demanding more icetime this year, very good all around game. GO SENS GO!!!

I never would have compared the two. Runblad is an offensive minded flashy d-man with an edge to him. Redden was a steady puck mover that never hit a fly and rarely ever shout the puck or scored.

Any predictions for tonight?

I'll go with 3-0 Boston.

Wow, right on the money again, Tookie! You have a real knack for this. You've probably heard this before, but you could make an absolute killing if you bet that the Sens won't win a single game this year.

haha nicely done Tookie19... Even though it's Cyberspace but I can, and most people here can probably agree with, that you're one of the biggest try-hards I've seen in a long long time since high school days when you have that group of kids hanging right outside the school driveway with pants down to their crotch, baseball caps 3 sizes too big for their head and a bandana wrapped around their face covering their mouths.

Anyways, great to have hockey back and the sens had a great game showcasing their prospects. As with every season, I'm excited to just have my favorite team playing once again!

Lee was great again tonight. Regin, Z, Costa, The Gonch, Andersson, Auld...so many players showed flashes of brillance. I don't remember last time I watched such a low scoring game with so much interest.

Rask was a wall, good for him...

tookie = don cherry. He'll brag when he guessed right, and he'll disapear when he guessed wrong. Just like all of us, there's a reason he posts on fan forums and does not get paid for his opinions (as much as he seems to think his calibre of hockey knowledge outranks us by far). All I know is that I would rather have an optimistic outlook and cheer for a team, rather than continously mention how much we suck and how we're going to lose. Its not rose coloured glasses...I know exactly where we rank as a team (its posted everywhere and everyone knows it), I just choose to back them up and cheer as loud as I can as it feels that much better when they (the underdog) wins.

Last night game was frustrating. I could see such talent and brilliance on both teams, but it was ruined by the poor ice quality at SBP. The puck was everywhere!

Aside from bad ice quality and the bad calls from refs... I was impressed with Foligno last night. Hope he can keep playing with that speed! Lee is shaking off the rust, Anderson was brilliant although not really tested... all in all... all players did perform quite well according to their skill levels/experience.

GO SENS GO!
