Battle of Ontario Resumes

It may be the Rookie Tournament but there will still be plenty of reasons to tune in when the Sens take on the Leafs in Oshawa tonight art 7:00 PM.

Both teams have deep prospect pools and they'll be on display tonight in the final game of this year's Rookie Tournament.  With both team's rebuilding, the future is definitely bright in the Battle of Ontario.

Both teams head in to the final game of the Rookie Tournament with a 2-0 record and the winner will lay claim to this year's tournament.  Robin Lehner will be back between the pipes tonight after a lights-out performance in the opening game of the tournament.

For many guys on both sides, this will be their first taste of the Battle of Ontario.  No training camp battles are won or lost at this Rookie Camp but a few players have certainly served notice that they are going to be in the mix for spots with the big club.

Zibanejad and Da Costa have been stand outs for the Sens through the first two games and will both be in the mix for a spot with the big club at the main camp.  It's hard to imagine there will be room for both of them though, especially with Peter Regin expected to secure one of the opening at the centre position.

Here is how the Sens line up is expected to look.

Petersson-Zibanejad-Prince
Puempel-Da Costa-Stone
Noesen-Grant-Cowick
Capurusso-Pageau-Culek

Cowen-Rundblad
Wiercioch-Gryba
Fransoo-Borowiecki

The game can be seen live on Roger 22 or you can tune in on the Team 1200.

After tonight, many of the players at this Tournament will be on their way back to Ottawa for the club's main camp.  Camp opens later this week and the first preseason game goes next Monday, against the Leafs.

How has Stone looked? For a prospect turning as many heads as he did last season, I haven't heard much praise during this rookie tourney.

It has only been a couple games but you're right, surprisingly quiet. I have noticed him a couple times though. Looks solid on the puck but you can see why people have "concerns" about his skating.

Its funny and almost refreshing that the prospect who we were looking forward to the most has been replaced by a plethora of prospects. This speaks volumes for what Murray was able to do during this rebuild in only one offseason. Last year we we're talking about Mark Stone. Now we're talking about Petersson, Prince, Da Costa and Zibanejad.

If anyone else has picked up EA NHL12, have you seen Mika Zibanejad anywhere? I checked Durgarden, Team Sweden etc. they have Matt Pumpel and Stafen Noesen in the Ottawa Roster though. Honestly the guy behind doing Ottawa's team (there is 1 person per team responsible for doing a team according to the ea interview i watched in NHL11) Craig Anderson still wears Purple Pads. this gets me a little steamed.

Really looking forward to this game tonight. And to think, after we watch Ottawa smoke Toronto, we get to see it all over again on Sept 19th when we visit the Leafs for the 1st pre-season game. I hope Rogers 22 airs it, they usually do air the pre-season. For anyone who thinks the rookie toury is too small of a sample size to judge what these guys are made of, you should get a good view in the pre-season as a majority will get a few games in. Wow, can't believe the season is so close now.

Zibby can play third line center for 9 games then go back to Sweden. He doesn't need to be top 6 so young.

There's no rush for any of these guys. The decisions will be 100% about what's best long-term for their development and the team of 2013-14 or later.

Some of you guys have forgotten what it's like to follow a team that's rebuilding I think.

Since this is a development year I suggest that we leave Cowen and Rundblad in the AHL until Christmas. They could be the first pair, the power play and penalty kill and therefore be on the ice for 30 min. per game. We do not need to wreck their confidence and development by being the third pair in Ottawa. The only thing that might change that is if Carkner is still as slow as he was in the second half of last year. By Christmas, someone will want Kuba and maybe Gonchar. There will also likely be someone who will be injured and then we could bring up the kids. This would be the best thing for their development and the long run.

I wouldn't want to rush any of our guys but it's all to do with the numbers and the availability in my opinion. as of right now 12 forwards are on one way contracts throw in Nikita Filatov and we are at 13. Including Filatov 6 of the one way contracts are on there last year 4 of which are RFA 2 UFA's. So what comes in mind is shouldn't everyone get to play this year before making a big decision of who to sign next year. you can say the same about defense. this year alone we watched a number of out AHL stars go because of the depth and lack of room to move to the NHL or they just weren't making the cut. It's a lot to take in but this year could be just as big as last year with losing more guys. I said it last day but I'll say it again with the depth of this team it's a shame there can only be 4 lines.

+2 #17 Mitchell 2011-09-13 11:43
side note. Cory Cowick had to play in the ''E'' so he could play more minutes because there was too many players for him to get any time. Look at him now in the past 2 games. would you really want to keep him down there just so we could have depth.

Agreed, I strongly expect that the only player on the opening night roster who did not appear in a Sens game last year will be Filatov.
Don't get me wrong, I'm more excited about the prospects Ottawa has than ever before, but that's just it - they've always had a pretty obvious lack of depth. This years bunch is promising, but more so because we are all comparing to past years. For those of you saying it's a shame we can only dress 4 lines, we do have depth, but I still don't see a proven second line...all the depth in the world doesn't help that.

I believe Cowen Rundblad and Zibanejad all too make the sens opening night roster I believe Murray will being waving or working on a trade too make room

Cowen- Size shutdown dmen we lacked last season PK -Cowen Philips

Rundblad -size quickness puck mover pp skill - Maclean wants to play puck control game

Zibanejad - "Size" grit skilled playing against 2nd line centres in this league his size and power at 18 years old is amazing and he is creative on playing and winning draws ..

When is comes down too Zibanejad and Da costa .. I'd have Size and Strength with Skill any day ..advantage Zibanejad

Regin's skill really showed on the wing ex Regin Spezza Alfie line

McLean did say in an interview that he knows he can always go to Michalek-Spezza -Alfie... so it sounds like he is going to experiment.

What I don't like is the 60 players in camp -- making 3 teams of 20.

They need to get the new playing system set in camp.. They have 7 pre-season games + practices to get it down.

They need to be competitive right out of the gate...

I hope they don't keep the 60 total players past the first 3 or 4 games... Send them to Binghamton (provided it's cleaned up) and keep no more than 10 extra players that stand the chance of making the lineup).

But just my opinion....

Go Sens Prospects Go... stop 'em Lehner...

OK,

I think to make early judgements, on who might and who might not make it to NHL, should be based after 20-25 games.

Bryan Murray and Tim Murray know the game inside out, and do see the big picture, but still look at what happened to guys like Wickenheiser( Montreal Canadiens ), and Alex Daigle.

if I had to pick two rookies to play all season with the sens it would be Cowen and Da Costa.

I think ultimately it plays out like this:

-Cowen plays the year in Ottawa
-Rundblad starts in bingo as the #1 and is the first call up, ultimately finishing his season in ottawa.
-Zibby is given 9 games or less to wet his appetite and then he returns to Sweden for one more season
-Da Costa starts in Bingo as #1 ctr,is called up when Zibby leaves and finishes the year in Ottawa.

I think we're having 2 different discussions. That comment was about them making the NHL team this year, not in their lifetime.

Daigle played 616 NHL games getting a point about 1 out of every 2 games. He may have been a disappointment, but was still a pretty decent NHL player.

What is the rule with Zibby though, is he allowed to play in the NHL and then return to Sweden? I thought if he plays in the NHL he'd be here for good? I don't think it works the same as the CHL rule, but I truly don't know.

SO I bought NHL12 today, started my franchise and here's how I shaped it out for the team. After a competitive training camp, both Cowen and Runblad made the team, meaning I had to move out a D. I was able to trade Kuba to Dallas for Radek Dvorak. He has a year left and can play a top 9 forward role. I will likely move him out once the team starts to fade out...

we also had one to many forwards so I had to waive Jesse Winchester, it was a numbers game and he just didn't fit.

Zibenajad made the team, but he will get it on an audition, playing 8-9 games before I decide.

My lines are as follows:

Filatov-Spez-Butler
Michalek-Zibenejad-Alfie
Foligno-Regin-Dvorak
Smith-Konopka-Greening

Neil, Condra rotate in with Regin, Dvorak, Greening until someone earns the spots.

On D:
Phillips, Karlsson
Runblad, Gonchar
Lee/Carkner, Cowen

I'm 1-1; destroyed the leafs. Lost by a goal to Detroit.

I'd like to get back to some other topics going on around the NHL. Did you guys hear that the Jets have officially signed Kyle Wellwood? He's one of those guys who has all the skills and some say the best hands in the NHL, he just cannot seem to keep with a club. Is it his fitness level, drive or determination that's the problem? It's strange because so many teams have given him a chance and they never tend keep him, yet you never hear bad stories about him. What gives?

It's his fitness level. He's not willing to be a gym rat, prefers to play soccer in the offseason I believe and is not a nazi about his own diet. I personally like him as a depth C though, can fill in 2nd line C when injuries occur and provide nice offense from the bottom 6 otherwise. Great move for a shallow Jets team.

Off topic... saw this on HockeyDB from someone who has been attending the scrimmages the Sens players have been having.
Remember it's only scrimmages... so how much can we take from this... but it's interesting..
I'll do it over 2 or 3 comments as the 1,000 word limit.

--------------------------------------------------------

I watched them scrimmage today. Trust me: Condra isn't sitting. Smith isn't sitting. They both stand a very good chance of outperforming all of the prospect kids plus Regin and Filatov for 2nd line roles.

Some basic notes:
-Foligno looks to be pretty much the same player. I'm not sure there's a second liner in there...
-Alfie has a spring in his step that was missing all of last year. He's the unquestioned leader of the team. Where he goes, the Sens go.
-Karlsson is ridiculous. Just so good. Outclassed everyone on the ice and smiled the whole time. He and Spezza were on the same team and it wasn't fair.

PART 2.....

-Spezza was pretty dominant, seems focused, led the early drills.
-On the other team, obviously Alfie had his moments, but Michalek was really shinning. He might surprise us and legitimize himself this year.
-Couldn't notice many youngins/bingo- ites too much (tried, couldn't), but the Hoff is uber-skilled. So smooth. It looks like he's due for a big year.
-Filatov still looks like a prospect in certain scenarios. There are NHL character traits that guys like Smith have that he doesn't.
-Same goes for Regin. Not sure he'll bounce back too hard. 40 points is a reach, I think.
-The D-corps look solid: Gonchar, Phillips, Kuba, Lee, and Carkner on the back end looked solid. I think the bubble 3 know exactly what they're in for with 2 and 7 on the way up.
-Kuba in particular was solid. Not a lot happened around his net when he was on the ice.
-Neil looks ready. It's crazy how skilled he is for a pugilist.

Rip OFF!

It feels like every year they pretend to come out with something new. when its just old things (i.e NHL94 helmets came off, NHL97 you could knock over goalies and nets) Sure the graphics are much better but have been the same for the past 3 years. They take the time to put faces on character like Alfredsson but really since when did Karlsson shave his head? We buy into the propaganda because we want the best game to quench are hockey thirst. $70 a year to play a game were they don't fix rosters right and only care about certain players and It's annoying and the company has a Rep for every team in the league to get things right. but they just copy and paste the same mistakes from previous games. GIVE US SOMETHING NEW! At least the 2K series for B-Ball had interviews with players(BAP). A linesman would be nice.

P.S. Craig Anderson in purple pads? were was the Ottawa Rep on that.

feedback much appreciated.

I think Da Costa and Zibanejad both make the team. Murray will swing a deal before the season starts. Zibanejad will play 3rd line center, and will get enough minutes. In Sweden they don't play enough games and he won't get big minutes. I find staying there will slow his development. He's big enough physically he can handle the Nhl. I say put him on the roster. Da Costa well he's just too talented.

Alfie-Spezza-Butler
Filatov-Da Costa-Michalek
Foligno-Zibanejad-Greening
Condra-Smith-Neil

Konopka

Regin-Winchester trade bait

Playing Da Costa will let Hoffman get big minutes in Bingo

Hoffman and Peterssen will be the main go to guys in Bingo - they'll be first call-ups in case of injury.

yeah, I didn't get this years edition. I only ever bothered to get 08 and got 10 as a gift.

The game engine has been the same since 2008... the only differences between successive releases is the little details like goalie fights and breakable sticks as well as the soundtrack, which is definitely not worth spending over 60$ on.

Do they still have the same annoying announcers?

@JABS

Yeah I think you are right and the rules are different for Zibby. If he was drafted out of the CHL then he could play 9 games and be sent back to a CHL league. However, he was drafted after playing in a Pro league. I remember when he was drafted...they were talking about Zibby having an 'out clause' in his swedish contract IF he made the NHL out of training camp. So I'm pretty sure, that if he makes the team out of camp, he will be staying in North America.

So as far as I understand it the options are:

A)Zibby goes through training camp and then goes back to Sweden (without playing a single regular season game).

B)i) Zibby makes the team out of camp and plays in the NHL
ii)because he no longer has a swedish contract (voided by playing 1 reg season NHL game) he is now exclusively on an Entry Level NHL deal and he is eligible to be sent to the AHL (Bingo).

A couple of little punks on that blue team.

I did not like the cross-check (after the whistle) on Culek... no penalty of course. Seems they like the cross-check I've seen several.

That fight with Cowick.. nice to see the Leaf player hit Cowick in the head a couple of times while the ref appeared to be holding him down..

The two Leaf goals scored on the back to back penalties..

If it wasn't for the Leaf's goalie I think the score would be a lot higher... he has played very well.

How can such a truculent team get the lesser amount of penalties?

How do some of these teams get so many good young goalies. The Sens found one... and that's about it .. for now.

notice the word future...not imminent.

While were on the topic, it's important to keep the butler expectations in check, he certainly looked good last year but he wont be flying under the radar this year and expecting to much could ultimately ruin him.

Tookie isn't going to like all this Filip Forsberg talk... but who cares.

A top-line winger (not necessarily to replace Alfie but to partially fill the gaping void when he hangs them up) is one of the few holes in our farm right now. Yakupov and Forsberg are the two elites of next years draft and while Yakupov may be slightly more talented, there's tons of merit in having so many of our players have the same language and heritage.

Definitely count me in the Forsberg camp should we find ourselves with a lottery pick next summer.

Holy crap....Even IF we are a lottery team...

Calder cup? Check.
Rookie Tourny champs? Check.

Finally, the future is bright. As for the immediate term, check the players that had HORRIBLE seasons and are still with the Sens:

Alfie
Spezza
Michalek
Kuba
Phillips
Regin

Imagine if these guys do as well as they normally do (seriously, that's half of the top 6!), AND Anderson is a legit #1 goalie (and is NOT LeClaire)? Consider some growing pains for the new guys and we are still a playoff team.

I guess the BIG question is, do you see a 7th in the east and a 1st round exit more or less important than failure and having a really high draft pick (ie: lottery team)?

Sure this was a Rookie tournament, but both sides showed serious signs of why they are the next face of each respective team. That game last night had a little of everything... scoring, saves (some of the best I've seen in years), speed, hits, skilled moves and it went into Overtime. I don't remember being that excited watching a game in awhile.

I'm really looking forward to the pre-season, I have a few options being presented that will allow me to make a game, so now I have to decide which one if the best to attend. Any ideas?

Stone's goal was great, but I liked Zibby's better. I agree Spezza's OT winner was amazing, especially in the deke category it's top of my list, Theodore didn't have a chance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy0pXTnx85Q

But for overall OT winner by a Senator, I'd have to say it's Alfredsson's Game 5 winner against Buffalo, you can relive it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA_XSlTIjjM
