Sens News and Notes

The title of this article may be a bit of a stretch.

As we sit in the middle of August, there really isn't a whole lot of news or notes that are Ottawa Senators related.  With that said, Junior training camps are open and there are a handful of Sens prospects that are involved.  Here is a quick recap on that front and a couple other points of interest.

  • Mark Stone and Matt Puempel both participated in the Team Canada summer camp.  I didn't hear a whole lot about the performance of Puempel but Stone has been drawing some rave reviews.  Stone was a force in the two Red & White games, racking up four goals in the two games.  The team will invite 35 players to the December camp. Stone has to be on that list.
  • Stefan Noesen and Shane Prince have bother survived the first round of cuts at Team USA's summer camp.  Leafs first round pick Tyler Biggs was not so lucky.  Team USA will still make more cuts, with 29 players remaining on their roster.
  • Mika Zibanejad and Fredrik Claesson are both at Team Sweden's camp although Zibanejad has yet to suit up for any of the exhibition games.
  • The Sens will play their annual Rookie Tournament from September 10-13 in a tourny that will also feature rookies from Pittsburgh, Chicago and Toronto.  The roster should be announced at some point in the next couple of weeks.
  • Tickets for the preseason, home opener and 3/5 Game Flex Packs go on sale tomorrow at 10:00 AM.  You have to think tickets for the Wild/Sens season opener will go quickly so don't miss out on your chance.  Go here to find out more information.
  • Working on setting up a poll so that we can vote on the winner of the SensChirp Search.  I have an idea who my favourite was but I want to poll the readers to see if we are all on the same page.  Still aiming for a winner by the end of this week.

I realize none of this really classifies as earth shattering news but it's as good as we can expect at this time of year.  Just about a month until training camp!

Read something on HFBoards that said he had been sick the last few days. Haven't heard anything beyond that. May also have to do with the fact that his spot on the team isn't really in doubt.

Already got my Minny tickets.... also working on those pre-season tickets I won on the first "Bingo Bus".

5-1/2 weeks to training camp. That sounds a lot better than about 8 weeks to regular season.

Fun read

"Spezza fired up about 'fresh' new direction for Sens"

"Things aren't going to come easy for us, but I think we're going to be right there in the mix if we can just work hard and believe in ourselves."

Spot on for my expectations of the team, they won't be in the basement again.

I'm sure its a combo of both those things Chirp. He's sick so they don't want to rush him into play when they don't need to. Good read today even though nothing is happening really.

Winchester on Kovalev

“I loved having him around, he gave us a lot of advice especially the younger guys and he was fun to watch. I don't really have much of a comment on what he said, it is what it is and it's time to move on.”

Noesen and Prince are both doing OK.
Noesen with 4A and Prince with 3A in 3 games.

A first round pick being one of the first cuts on the American team is pretty pathetic. Particularly since Prince was selected 39 picks later.

Biggs has size and toughness, which usually goes pretty far on an under 20 team. Maybe he just has a terrible attitude and work ethic. Either way, I'll be chuckling at Leaf fans over Christmas this year.

This is better than in past yrs when the Sens hardly had any prospects for the WJC. This time if they all make it & I know it's still too early to tell but the potential is there to have at least 6 Sens prospects playing in the WJC.

Isn't Lehner still young enough to play in the WJC tournament if Ottawa allows him to play in it? I doubt they would since he will be the #1 goalie in Bingo but you never know.

I think we could see upwards of 7 prospects on their respective teams this year.

Canada: Stone and Puempel
US: Prince and Noesen
Sweden: Zibanejad and Claesson
Czech Republic: Culek

Its also possible we see Markus Sorensen for the Swedes, but I'm not sure if he was taken as an over ager.
My guess would be that we'll see 4 or 5 of those guys actually make their teams.

Has anyone heard anymore on Marcus Sorensen, was he at this years eval camp? Will he be on team Sweden U20 team?

Chirp,

You are such a giver!

As for our prospects in the WJC, cant wait to see them all, those who make it, hopefully Zibanejad has a break out tourney! The Org is really pushing for this kid to be the next Sens franchise player!

They were saying just because some players were cut now.. di not mean they could not make it on the team. We will have to wait until Dec to chuckle.

Hello all,

Anyone else been day dreaming of the possiblity of Ottawa taking advantage of Nashvilles tight budget and somehow getting Webber then trying to negotiate a contract much more reasonable then 7.5. He definatly isnt the best d-man in the NHL, but if he could get signed at a reasonable 6 mill, he would be 10x the player than we had Kovy for at 5.5

I was interested in what everyone thought.

Peace from southern alberta

Scratched not cut, right? I'm assuming scratched means they were given the night off.

no interest here, another overpaid player, rather see the young guys go at it.
A flip of Gonchar Kuba Phillips would be the only way to interest me, never happen.
I guess in a daydream it could lol

A couple of thoughts:
- Not sure where you are getting that they are tight on a budget. Certainly it would be self-imposed as they are well below the cap.
- Sens don't need D-men right now and the Preds don't have a forward worth chasing (2nd line C with one or two years of contract left).
- I'd be more inclined "help" the teams that are tight to the cap (Buffalo, Washington, Philly, Calgary, NYR & Pittsburgh).

You know what, Zibanejad-Noese n-Puempel, I think the scouts did a great job. That Noesen looks like a real hustler with some finish to boot.

Filatov
Zibanejad
Butler
Puempel
Noesen
Da Costa
Hoffman

Our forwards are starting to look pretty darn good.

The word "promise" is unfortunate but I think we all assumed Filatov would have a spot on the top two lines and get PP time

Likely also an important thing to say to a guy who has suggested he might return to Russia.

"promise" may be a translation thing. I think it is fair to assume that BM told Filatov where the Sens perceive him in their depth chart and the roles they feel he can fulfill for the team. I would think BM would have also told Filatov that he'll be given the chance to prove that the Sens' assessment and expectations are correct. Call it a "right of first refusal" if you wish, but the role is there for Filatov to take.

If he falls short .... I'm sure the Sens will give that opportunity to someone else.

To honour our beloved AK27 in his retirement from the NHL I have compiled a long list of highlights from his time in Ottawa..

Thanks to Kovalev for giving Ottawa fans an incredible 2 seasons filled with an average of 1.5 highlight moments in the twilight of his professional hockey career.

Seriously though thanks and well wishes to an incredible hockey player that we were able to appreciate (when he felt like it). Truly a very gifted and talented player that was great to watch when he showed up. His jabs at Clouston and the Ottawa media are very warranted. Good luck in the KHL and have a great retirement.

Out with the old talented enigmatic Russian winger and in with the new in Filatov. If anything I hope Filatov brings it more often even if not at the same level Kovalev was capable of.

I am sure that Filatov was promised a chance to play on the first two lines, and PP. Whether he stays there will be up to him, but he will clearly have a shot at it. As long as he works hard he should stay there, but if he thinks he can come and coast like Kovy, he may not be there for long.

I'm surprised no other NHL team was willing to try him out, or did he just get better money in the KHL? Great piece of the B-Sens this past year, best of luck to him!

I think hes probably burnt out from playing in the minors so long. KHL money and reputation is a step up from the AHL.

Great highlights of Kovie indeed! Should we be worried though that in the first clip, of all 7 goals we scored in that game all of them were by FORMER Sens? KovieX4, KellyX2 + Ruutu. :)
