LOOK BACK TO LOOK AHEAD
As I sit and look back over the past 5 months, it is hard for me not to find comparisons between the way the 2010-11 Senators's season ended and the way their 1995-96 season ended. In the midst of all the players leaving town, Murray set his sights on one position player that he felt could play a pivotal role in moving the team forward. That need was to solidify the number one goalie position. Enter Craig Anderson.
In the winter of 1996 new GM Pierre Gauthier was brought into the fold after three and a half seasons of painful expansion hockey. 'The Ghost' appeared on the scene and simply said, "We'll get it done." One of his first steps was to also solidify the number one goalie position. Enter Damian Rhodes.
When Craig Anderson and Damian Rhodes joined the Sens there were instant changes, for the better. As the 95-96 season and 10-11 season drew to a close both teams were winning regularly, upsetting playoff bound teams and gaining much needed confidence in one another.
Behind the bench both teams had endured coaching changes. Out were guys (Allison and Clouston) who had both succeeded at the AHL level, but had struggled in the NHL. Enter coaches that were known for structure, giving players roles and were well liked by their troops- Jacques Martin and Paul MacLean.
The comparisons do not stop there. As the 2011-12 season is about to start for the Senators and looking back at the 1996-97 roster, both appear to have been built very much the same way. Both teams were lead by Number One Centremen (Yashin and Spezza) that were desperate to show they could be leaders and aging team captains (Cunneyworth and Alfredsson) that were entering the twilights of their careers.
Here are a few more…
- Offensive first round pick D-Men that had been traded for and entering their rookie seasons with tons of expectations- Redden and Runblad
- Veteran offensive D-Men that still having something left in the tank - Duchesne and Gonchar
- Young Centremen that had shown potential but were struggling to show if they were 2nd liners or depth guys - Bonk and Regin
- Past first round wingers who had shown glimpses of promise, but had not yet found their role - Daigle and Filatov
- Speedy veteran wingers that could contribute on the scoresheet, but without any real consistency - McEachern and Michalek
- Heart and soul D-Men that may lack skill, but make up for it in heart and desire - Pitlick and Carkner
- Veteran D-Men that were calming influences on a team trying to find their way - York and Phillips
- European D-Men that had the ability to step up offensively when needed, but again lacked the much needed consistency - Laukkanen and Kuba
- Physical wingers that were willing to step up and take care of any problems that arose - Lambert and Neil
There are differences that can be seen, and to this end there may be a wash. The 2011-12 team has a young All Star Defenseman in Karlsson and two potential offensive threats in Butler and Da Costa. Meanwhile in the summer of 1996 Gauthier signed a free agent goalie that was expected to compete for the back up spot, enter Ron Tugnutt who went on a run that was unimaginable, and the rest was history.
So what does this all mean?
Can the 2011-12 Senators catch magic in a bottle and slip into the playoffs? Their own history has shown that it is possible.
Ah there we go. Should be up there now!
Day 2 > Day 1
Definitely a more interesting read. I like that he/she used historical knowledge as the basis to draw conclusions (opinions). And although my comments yesterday were to keep opinion to the comment board, i could get into this kind of regular contribution. This is a very interesting comparison and very well written in general to boot! Kudos
Great article! Huge improvement over yesterday.
Good article!
Constructive criticism if you're interested:
Would have been even better if the comparisons were broken down a little more. I'm not extremely familiar with the 96-97 team.
I could do without the 'old man' intro and the questions at the end - they're implied.
This is fun Chirp!
Also I think the comparisons are very stretched.. given the comparisons in this article you could compare almost any 2 seasons. Overall well written and fact based, much better than yesterday.
more fact, less opinion than yesterday's article.
chirp, i think you should nail it down to two at the end of the week and have each of them write an additional blog. you really need someone that can consistently put up a good read about a wide range of topics.
Haha nope. I think someone was playin a little trick on Tookie with that one. The real Tookie has yet to comment on this one
Great idea.
Yeah that wasnt me, I liked this article full of fun little facts, great for those who love little snippets of stats. Well written too!
Good job!
Really? Let's not start this here... We don't need fake accounts..
I HAVE FOILED YOUR PLANS AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHahahahahahahaha
give my comment thumbs up if you found the "p"
qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqpqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq
Also really like the idea of narrowing down to 2 (or maybe 3 if the 3rd one is strong) and getting them to do another. Chirp Idol sort of.
Easy if you CTRL F
Some of those comparisons might be a bit of a stretch but close enough that you can get away with making some of them.
I love the history in the article as well.
Very well written.
I'll keep it short cause I'm obviously biased, but well written and some nice comparisons between the 2 team time lines. I personally thought Tugnutt-Anderso n, Bonk-Foligno, Butler-Daigle and a few others were better comparisons, but well done in linking in the 2. Definitely needed to mention the Calder Cup though for Alfie.
Good job and congrats on the article and making the final 5!
Haha I think it's funny as hell! I hope it's just starting! Tookie19 is ridiculous.
and mine from yesterday about him 'snapping off' to his Gilmour poster.
tssk tssk
Careful. Mention the Leafs again and he might remove your posts too!
You mean make fun of Tookie again and he'll remove your post!
Couldn't be. Best goalie we've ever had!
Grow up people...
I'd go to youtube if I wanted the childish back and forth bickering...
I like this idea too. I would go further and make it an assignment blog, basically give them a specific subject to write about which lends itself to a better comparison. Maybe make it about a specific player or issue.
Sorry Grandpa, we should let the Leaf fan come on here and bash our team and politely accept it...this is Ottawa after all. Heck when they come to our games in packs and swear at our kids we should mummble under our breathe and just take it like 'prison Mike'.
I give up, You win
I like you Rick.
You claim to dislike this guy so much for what he says, yet you do the exact same thing, yet worse...
Like I said, if I wanted childish back and forth crap, I'd go to youtube..
There's a reason why your posts get deleted when no one elses do...
These are the one's that if you do ignore they will go away, they dont bring anything insightful to the blog. Just mindless garbage. So childish as to creat similar names just to try and get attention. So sad...
And they wonder why their posts get deleted...
That is a great idea, this would force them to broaden their knowledge and use creativity.
You completely miss the point... Nevermind...
I hope you knocked on a whole lot of wood with that Daigle - Filatov comparison!!!
Not a fan of impersonations, kind of makes the site look like a joke, or at least registering a nick a joke.
I get the entertainment side but hope it is not long lived.
Funny how you keep pushing the Leafs thing, lol, cant you see its not working and making you look like an idiot...
I go to about 30 Sens games a year, rest I give to family and friends. Oh and the Sens dont need you, unless you can play 2nd line centre, but I doubt you even play hockey, or any sport for that matter. Go smoke another doobie!
I'll just say its a mere coincidence that the comment that im quoting has a negative 11 rating (stupidheads)
Cuz Im nice I'll play your little game, P is in bold.
Haha that's not bad!
I'm just tired of Sens fans getting drowned out by the visitors' fans (not just Mtl, TO). Unfortunatley it even happens on our blogs now. It's sad, really.
If you let him live in your garage he'd probably write some columns for you.
qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqpqqqqqqqqqq

seeing as this comment is to much in the negatives in terms of rating how about every one just put more thumbs down see Im also trying to set a record for most thumbs down or thumbs up so at this point I just want more thumbs down k? (got this idea from a youtube comment)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1TqEV3VcMA
I like that song
And on that note. I don't think its necessary to write an article just for the sake of writing one. Make sure it's quality content.
Oh so now you're a terrorist? I don't give into terrorist's demands.
I think thats enough haha
I was in middle of my last comment/ pester when you said that
I was contemplating writing one about Tim Murray and how he might be secretly running the show, but couldn't find enough solid fact to back me up.
I do know that his responsibilitie s as Assistant GM include managing Bingo's team; he's also more involved in scouting than Bryan is.
Whoa Whoa, Took are you now saying that we may make the playoffs next year????
you are coming aroung Tookie... love it,
I do like the article, albeit far fetched in many areas, I see Anderson way ahead of Damian Rhodes,
Yashin/ Spezza should not be mentioned in the same breath
nor Cunneyworth/ Alfredsson...al though I did love what Cunney brought.
In all I see us in a much better situation today, then 95/96... so yes we do have a shot at the playoffs.
Well written, but I also did not think yesterday's was as bad as some are making it out to be, it was opinionated, but quite accurate.
IMO of course
Great summer project CHIRP and thanks for including us!
Good point. In fact...I have a bit of Russian Vodka left at my place...when I get home from work I will pour a shot and then smack the empty glass on my wooden table twice...
Seriously though...I have high hopes that Filatov becomes a fricken steal for us....just seems like the Sens are due for that 1 gem that no one saw coming.
if you are comparing the Sens rebuild to the Laffs rebuild, you will have to add another 20 years to that 7 you stated...
again I say we have a decent shot at the playoffs next year, and will be contending the following year... in both cases better then the Leafs...
Thats not the real Tookie, Miguel, its a child trying to impersonate me. I would never say something as unrealistic like Sens making the playoffs next year.
why anyone would even want to pretend to be Tookie is beyond me!
No offence Tookie, no one should use anothers name...not even Tookie's
Do you want to live in harmony together? We could be like 2 orphaned children...Frol icking is optional.
I know but what can we do, its not hurting anyone, only the kid trying to immitate is the one losing face. Doing an easy IP trace reveals the poor soul. Its ok SlickRick, I aint mad at cha!
Damn Tooks. How did you catch me? Was I that obvious?
What happens when you trace my IP? Will my soul live on?
If Chirp bans all accounts with Tookie in the username, wouldn't that solve 2 problems???
Since when is smoking weed an insult?
Crack and cocaine alter you mental state far more drastacly than weed.

Nice article about Wiercioch and I really liked what he had to say about the styles in the AHL vs NHL and how it suits his game. I really think he could be a darkhorse in the fall, but likely getting at least 1 more year in the AHL. It seems like those players coming from the college ranks are better prepared for the mental side of the NHL game, and as he put it the tactical play.
Really? Did he criticise the Leafs too much?
Really enjoyed it.
Also good Weircoch write-up. Seems he could be pushing for a spot on the Sens in the next 2 yrs...
@Lampchops
the smoking weed comments definately don't hurt, I think Snookie could use a hit of the electric lettuce, if he ever finds his way out that locker.
I seem to recall you mention last year about a Hockey Pool, do you host one? If I got this wrong, have you considered starting one and hosting it on your site to the members?
Considering the lack of actual hockey talk going on (minus posts people are voting on) I thought we could change the subject somewhat and see what people are doing for the Fantasy season? This is the time I usually spend reviewing stats for drafts. Anyone else planning a Hockey pool or ramping up for one? Maybe someone could write up a fantasy hockey post, list a few sleepers, etc. Could be a good way to pass the time.
Mad
I suggested that about a week ago and got grilled for it.
Yeah I agree, thx for the link Jabs, way too early to give up on Wiercioch, he's got speed and size, hopefully he gets more of a role on the Bingo blueline. He should be able to crack the line up for the Sens in 2013-14.

I didn't see the post, but I'm surprised by that response. Considering how many fantasy GM's we have here posting line combinations, etc. You'd think we'd have a fair amount of people who are interested in Fantasy Hockey. While I love reading about the prospects and moves, it's usually a slower time of month. Fantasy homework is also a great way to learn about other teams prospects and who's about to break into the NHL.
Ya guess some of these guys don't want to back it up. All talk. I'm interested in starting one up with you tho! Lemme know. Hopefully others will show interest.
Who are u guys taking 1st this year, I'm still going with Crosby until we hear any negative recovery news, but Perry, Stamkos, Daniel Sedin and the ever present Ovechkin still have strong cases as well. Anyone else you'd consider?
I think Giroux will be the most overvalued underrated player if that's even possible. What I mean is he'll probably cost top 15-25 and he could produce to those numbers, but is just such an unknown as the main contributor on a team right now. I'm hoping "analysts" rate him lower than 30 so I can draft him at a steal.
Ryan Miller could be a big sleeper if he's not in top 3 goalies. I could go on and on lol, but those are just some early thoughts.
Nice Jabs. We'll count you in. Hopefully Chrip will respond with his intentions this time.
I'd go Crosby at 1 this year too. Going into last year I think it was:
1) Ovechkin
2) Crosby
3) Backstrom
4) Stamkos
5) H. Sedin
6) D. Sedin
Miller was actually 8 or 9. His stock and Backstrom's stock are both going to fall going into this year though.

I think you'll see Stamkos jump to the top of many leader boards this year. But I'd stick with one of the Sedin's if it's a 1 year, not much has changed in Van. As for netminds, Miller is a good choice, and Bryz, beyond the regulars.

My place of employment has officially blocked SensChirp as an accessible website, because it is a "blog".
Never have I been stricken with such boredom. I've had to relate to other forms of hockey websites that talk about "other" NHL teams, and NEVER have I completed so much actual work.
I just had a SensChirp dose and I can now breathe again.
Great Entries! Go Sens Go!!!!!!

Miller will be great. Buffalo fortified their D. Vokoun is another great pick. He'll easily get 40+ wins this year.
Quoting FBP:
Found that most entries were between 500-700 words.
I did not keep that in mind. Good point!
I'd be interested in joining a SensChirp fantasy league.
I thought Monday's was decent, but yesterday's (above) was far better.
Great job by the writer to have taken the time to add research to their words...
I know I'm late, but was away from computer yesterday and just wanted to let the writer know that they did a good job on this one +1!
That's 4 people so far. What are you guys thinking, 12 man league?
That's 4 people so far. What are you guys thinking, 12 man league?
Most Yahoo Leagues are 12 man, but it could be higher depending on the interest. Still no word if Chirp is hosting one or willing too.
I'd be in as well.
It's too bad there isn't a fantasy league where we could all be the GM of the Senators, somehow deciding who to play / line combinations or something... to see who would be the best at coaching / GMing the sens team!
Maybe we should do a fantasy league where you can only pick SENS players - haha!
Most Yahoo Leagues are 12 man, but it could be higher depending on the interest. Still no word if Chirp is hosting one or willing too.
I am assuming by his lack of response he doesn't want anything to do with it.
We can do anywhere from 6-20 people. Too few people and you just have superstars battling it out. It would be no fun. 12-16 people I would say is fair. Hopefully we will get more people who are interested. Lots of time though.
That's great, count me in on that.
