Calling All Lurkers!

I know you're out there!

After having had the chance to meet a number of readers over the last couple of years, I know there are a number of people that read the site but don't actually post in the comment section.  Well today I'd like to hear from you.

The comment section has been fairly consistent since the season wrapped up but we are always looking for new voices and new opinions to join the fray.  So for one day anyway, I was hoping some of those so called lurkers could join in the conversation.

What do you like about the site? What would you like to see more of? What features would you add heading into next season?

If you haven't had a chance, I also suggest registering for an account here on the site.  It makes posting a lot easier and you will also have access to the forums which are currently only available to registered users.  We are also looking at some other possible perks for SensChirp members.

Currently sitting at 985. Would be great if we could hit 1000 registered users by the end of the day.  Click here to sign up for a SensChirp account.

You can also follow SensChirp on Twitter by clicking here, or stop by the SensChirp Facebook page.  I'm hoping the next SensChirp contest will integrate all the different avenues available.

  • On a side note, a few of you have asked and I can say that my goal is to have the new contest ready to go at the start of August.  I was going to try to get it out this week but I figure there is no need to rush.  August is going to be a long and quiet time for Sens fans so it will be nice to have something to help pass the time.  I was thinking another Duck Hunt would be good but I'd like to change things up a little. Still working out the details.
  • New Sens head coach Paul MacLean did an interview with That's Hockey last night and was on the Team 1200 this morning. When asked which players he was most excited about, MacLean mentioned Spezza, Filatov and Zibanejad.  Interesting to see Zibanejad in the mix with those other two.
  • Remember to send in your audition to be the new SensChirp contributor by tomorrow evening. I will review the submissions over the weekend and then feature some on the site for reader feedback.

Hello JC,

I've posted before (back on the old site design) as well but not very often.

I've been following since the Snet forums days and still remember that thread you started asking how to start a blog. Anyways its great to see that it's become so successful.

I was also there at the draft party but couldn't figure out who you were.

Keep up the good work!

Hey SensChirp, I am a big fan of hockey but with a young large family, my ability to sit and watch hockey is almost non-existent. My passion for hockey has therefore morphed from a fan of watching the game to a fan of the management side of things. My highlights now are draft day, free agency day and deadline day. I love to see how teams build for now and the future and being a Sens fan prinarily, I really hope to catch more games this year because I believe the overhaul they have done is quite extraordinary. Anyways thank you for the site, it allows me a snapshot of whats going on in Sens land when there is general chaos around me.

Other than a few hiccups lately, the site has been great SC!

By any chance, will the contest be able to involve out of towners?

OK I'm a "devoted" lurker. Check out the site for news at least once a day but keep my opinions pretty much to myself. I'm a big fan of the Game and the Team but haven't played hockey myself in over 40 years. So don't have many informed opinions although I have noticed that that there is no real requirement to be informed LOL. Had pretty much lost interest during the Clutch & Grab years but my interest was rekindled in the Post Lockout with the new anti-hooking rule enforcement.

Keep doing a great job Chirp

Hmm I hadn't planned it that way. Maybe I can add an element that would make it so people outside the city could participate as well. Let me see what I can come up with.

My 2 cents on the contest. How about making it so out of city people can have a chance at winning also. I'm to far to travel to look for ducks, but would definately head there for a game.

Long time lurker here! I started visiting your site during the whole Heatley debacle and have been a loyal lurker ever since ;)

I have been following the Sens since they first came into the league (had seasons tickets until '98). I enjoy your site for many reasons i.e. team rumours and overall sens chatter etc...but what I really like is the way you write Chirp. You come across as a knowledgeable and passionate fan who is able to engage people in healthy discussions/deb ates (see post on Lehner) and your posts are always fresh even if there is nothing big to write about. I'm a busy guy at work but always have time to check SensChirp 15 times a day!

For adding to the site? Perhaps a code of conduct with strict enforcement? I realize it's hard to control but there have been instances when a good post has been derailed by a few people who seem more intersted in calling people out for sharing their opinion or not using proper grammer etc...

Go Sens!

Hello Chirp! Have been a registered user for a while, a regular reader since the days of the Heatley fiasco, and am a big fan of yours!

I think you run a great site, the only thing here that really slows down my posting is the combativeness of some of the posters on this thread... I wonder if the thumbs-up thumbs-down feature has contributed to it in some way, because I've noticed a mild change for the worse since the switch to the current format...

In any event, just wanted to give you the ol' thumbs up, and say GO SENS GO! I'll hopefully be watching my first ever Sens game live when they finally come to visit Winnipeg this fall :)

Born in London, living in Hamilton for university. Had a hard time choosing a team to root for at first but once my friend started following the leafs and I realized how terrible they truly are, I decided to go with the next closest Canadian hockey team. Been a fan for 6 years now. I Was really hoping for a team to move to Hamilton so that I could watch some more sens games.

Fine fine, I'll join the fun and games. Site is great, though I gotta say I preferred the old one, only because all I'm really looking for is news and updates from someone a bit more opinionated. I think the blog format really speaks to me, and I'm glad to be able to come here everyday and hear real opinions on how the team is coming along. I am coming around to the new format though, because the writing is really rock solid, so it makes it worthwhile.

I think that would be a good feature. anyway, very excited to watch our young guns this season, and I highly doubt any team is going to be able to push us around this year... In regards to the next "duck hunt"....Since you have so many out of towners, I wonder if the best approach is to have an Internet-based treasure hunt.

I wonder how easy it would be to register a domain name and have a "register" tab on it...1st person to find the domain (via a series of hints) and "register" wins. I can't imagine that "answer-SChuntO TT.biz" would ever be taken?

Of course, you could take the sleazy route used in the 90's of forcing people to visit tons of sites, taking specific words from pages to find a particular FTP server password...But, you are much better than that :)

Anyways, that's off the top of my head and may be a starting point?

Hey Chirp,

You called ?! eheheh! It seems like I registered a few months back but didn't recall! I've been following you for a few years now! This site is my #1 Sens site!
I like this site since it is current, often updated and with good people (not that many homers)! I would like to see/add : more prospect info - maybe a section with a page for each players in the system that people could feed to keep us updated. A section for review of games and impression of players (junior and others - that people went to, which include sens' prospect and future draftees) More contributors (similar to the Yost trial eheh). Trying to get a regular Bingo blogger and have a section for the Baby Sens. Since we are now the Swedish Senators! Maybe a European contributor that could keep us informed. Past and future draft reviews. Live chats. Other special events as the Bingo finals trip. We should try to make people use the forum more. More video/multimedi a.
to be continued

On a completely unrelated note. I came to the conclusion that during the NHL offseason, I have lost complete control of TV watching preferences. Other contest (i.e. duck hunt, photoshop ideas as new jersey design - or you supply a picture that we can have fun and joke around with). Some more interaction with the readers (fantasy league, pools, etc...). We could try to pull some string and have a interview with a prospect every month. Seek a Habs or Leafs writer THAT IS NOT BIAS every now and then to back an honest outside view. League farm team system reviews. A daily link review of everything Sens (and interested hockey related) from other sites. Etc.... I'll try to post more when I'll have a chance!

Anyhow, love this site! Keep it up! I know it's a slow period but I still need my fix :P eheh!

p.s. If you ever need help for anything don't hesitate!! I am a webmaster and manage a few forums here and there. Some photoshop, flash etc experience so would be glad to contribute to this site! Also, if you ever need some French articlew or reviews, n'hésites pas!

I agree that standings wise we should be in similar situations. Our D is better than Dallas, and our top 6 is weaker than theirs was with Richards, Morrow, Ribeiro, Benn, Neal & Eriksson. I think we are in a better position then they are now overall though, for the long term. And now Joe went crazy spending money on overrated veterans.

Here's a bit of afternoon randomness. I was poking through TSN, and came across this...

The top 3 defensemen in the league last season for Even Strength Takeaways....was:

1. Dustin Byfuglien (74 takeaways)
2. Shea Weber (50 takeaways)
3. Erik Karlsson (46 takeaways)

Maybe its because I haven't seen the Sens play hockey in over 3 1/2 months, but I can't seem to remember this being a strength in Karlsson's game. Figured that would be something you'd notice alot from a player...their takeaway ability.

Huh....Sneaky little swede he is. Game on kid!

Haha.. I bet it was from those mad dashes back when he'd rush up ice... I can't remember how many times i'd yell at the TV when Karlsson would rush up ice and lose the puck, and then all in the same breathe i'd be praising him for getting all the way back and getting the puck back...

Nice job in finding that stat! Hopefully all those Karlsson doubters now get the point that he's small, but still skillful defensively with his stick and footwork.

Exited for the new season and after listening to Coach this morning on the team1200 I look forward to seeing a hard working and well structured team. I like how he didn't want to comment on last years structure and only commented on what he see's in individual players and how he can use them in different roles.

This is my first post on the site, but I've been lurking it multiple times daily for at least a year now. I actually work at SBP during the Sens games so i get to catch alot of the action first hand, but I've been in new zealand for the past 6 months, and this website really helped with keeping me posted on all the latest news, game.

I Love this site and will be post more often.

Lurker mainly, daily (or more) visitor to the site. Usually dont post in comments because the rule of the few who intimidate the many with crap arguments (those that take apart one small part of anothers comments, usually ignoring the impact of their comments on a larger scale.. Provide a feature to hide comments of certain posters and I'm in for a debate.
Your site is where i start my day - its nice that you mainly stick to fact or common sense and don't make stuff up for hits like Shitland or just talk out of your ass with no hockey sense like ShitSensay.
Still find the new site design hard to read on a blackberry torch, but since i am probably only one of the few suckers who bought this paperweight sub-par-phone I wouldn't suggest you invest to make it work on it.

Oh and SlickRick, stop teasing the homeless people downtown with Sens tickets, its not nice

Hey I am primarily a lurker but i post occasionally. I visit the site 2 times a day!
I live in Toronto and this site gives me the sens banter that i miss out on living here.

I think The Black Terror or Jabs are the strongest posters for both content and consistency; i hope they are planning on submitting an article to you.
I think tookie mostly just gets a kick out of ruffling feathers and because of that he would also make a good contributer - you two could be like ron maclean and don cherry. You could be the relevant clear headed voice of reason and tookie could be the wild, off color, opinionated SOB that fires up controversy haha

Keep up the great work Chirp - i liked the stream idea posted above as well. Anyway you could just join Google+ and have your articles posted to google+ stream if so, link up your profile man.

Big time Lurker, basically since you started I have been showing up daily and trying to stay up to date with the latest news and rumours. I admire this site because you always are on top of what's going on in the sens nation and even though I am (and I am sure there are hundreds more) a die hard fan, I like how you give a good level headed opinion on all things sens. You are no too optimistic or pessimistic with your postings. I never really posted before because never felt the need to. I was always happy just reading. Maybe this will open the door for me to add my hockey sense which is completely minimal.
Thanks running a great site Chirp!

with this summer heat and no hockey news and still a long 2 months of waiting to do till hockey starts going. i decided to do some research on the team found something interesting about everyone's favorite Dman, Filip Kuba.
In 2008-2009 season, he put together 40points in 71 games (0.56 ppg), 65% of the points (26 points) came from the powerplay. He lead our team in average power play time on ice at 4:30 ( with the pizza line all arround 4:10).
following season he had 28points in 53games (0.53 ppg), 40% of points came from PP (11points). his PP time on ice was decreased by a minute, so was our top lines time.
Quote

0 #102 MoeDozer 2011-07-21 15:18
continued:

interseting enough that season a player named karlsson joined the team. he had roughly same PP time on ice as kuba. that year karlsson had 26points in 60games (0.43ppg) and 10/26 points came on the PP.
following season. we added gonchar. gonchar (20/27 points on PP) and karlsson (21/45 points on PP) also gonchar and karlsson had roughly 3:50 PP time on ice each. leaving kuba with 7/16 points on PP and 2:07 PP time on ice.
this year expect kuba to have another slow year and probably one of the worst seasons of his career if not the worst, mainly because players like gonchar, karlsson, rundblad will lead our PP. that leaves him a slot there possibly on the second unit but anyone can take that spot, i honestly would put lee in that spot over kuba.

I settled with Lehnerfied because I know that in a few year he WILL reach god status in Ottawa... I have posted under the names "K" and "DanyCanSukIt" (I was a just a little angry about the heater trade)

The best part of this website (other than the insider info that you seem to get before anyone else) is the fact that we're all die-hard sens fans having great conversations about the greatest game ever.. (for the most part)...

The one suggestion that I think would be great the throw on the main page would be a scoreboard (somewhat similar to the RSU main page)

I surely hope the Sens can find a way to unload 2 D to make room for Rundblad & Cowen. This is a freakin' re-build so let the young guys play and learn in the NHL. I think both are ready.

Question is... how can Murray unload 2 D -- and who would it be?

Present and accounted for! lol

Other than a few hiccups lately, the site has been great SC!

By any chance, will the contest be able to involve out of towners?

Hmm I hadn't planned it that way. Maybe I can add an element that would make it so people outside the city could participate as well. Let me see what I can come up with.

Would Edmonton be considered "outside the city" haha.

Hoping the future is as bright as it looks for my two teams. Been a rough few years as a sens/oiler fan but I am predicting the 2014 SCF will be between these two teams.
Also hope filatov works as good as he did for the sens as he did on NHL 11. 33 goals alongside spezza would really help this team out.

I googled Tookie, and this is what i got:

Multiple shotgun killer 2. Murderer of a convenience store clerk 3. Murderer of a husband, wife and daughter who ran a motel 4. co-Wrote booklets, not books, that amount to less than a single highschool essay 5. Never apologized for the murders 6. Never admitted to the murders - that might hurt his capital habeas case 7. Coward who uses peace as a cover for fear of the lethal injection

Alright, I'm here!

I've posted a few times here Chirp... and also quite some time ago emailed you an article by Ian Mendez which you went on to post on your main blog (at that time... think last summer?).

Anyways, I do read the forum from time to time... especially during big occasions like July 1st or draft day... but otherwise, there's just so much argument going on its just very hard to keep a track of!

Although Chirp, and to other readers - I do suggest checking out the unofficial sens fan page on facebook. Its a much smaller community (about 20 regular posters maybe) and we have good discussions there. Best part is, there aren't way too many posts you lose track of! Plus advantage of it being facebook - mobile updates!

Hey Chirp,
Long time lurker and occasional poster. I've been in Calgary for 10 years and miss going to the "Palladium" to see the Sens, I know it's the old name. I still remember going to our first ever game at the Civic Center. Really enjoy the banter on here, except for SF19! His posts are like a horrific ice cream headache. You can see me on tv sitting right behind Kipper's net when the Sens come to town. It's pretty easy to spot the fellow Sens fans in the sea of red here in Cowtown.

Good job for calling out people who don't post but just read and get them to post.

I know that Murray most likley will prusue Penner if Penner
hits the open market next summer.

So does anybody think that Penner will resign with the LA Kings before next summer and what team do you guys think Penner will choose the Leafs or the Senators and how much do you guys think penner will command on the open market?

I think that Penner would choose the Senators over the Leafs the Senators and the Leafs have a bidding war next summer.

Got tired of the TSN comments as I don't follow the Sens to defend them to Leafs fans and man are they aggressive on the TSN forum. Great work and thanks.

The problem with more french is that not everyone knows french. And everyone who knows french knows english.

Thats not really true... I know a lot of young guys from my school and other quebec schools who are not really good at understanding/s peaking english, so the fact that this site is only english is keeping them out from the site. I would not really want an independent french writer because SC system is working well and he is really good, but maybe translations would be appreciate. Still, I know we are a minority here in the sens community, and if it is to complicate to have french on the site let's just keep it that way, it's working well !

I don't post here mainly for the reason of a few individuals whom make it unpleasant for every one to even consider having any sort of thoughtful and potentially 'optimistic' discussions about our favorite team because not only will they shoot down such optimism that is ever so typical of a sports fan, but they do so in every condescending tone possible and believe they reign supremacy over every one else.

Such arrogance and ignorance is tiring to read and whilst often a times I skip those posters and their posts, it seems like others are dragged in to the pointless arguement making the whole forum a bunch of nonsense.

So with that said... I'm back to lurking!

Hey SC,

Longtime lurker. I used to read your stuff back in your "Jose Cuervo" days and transferred over as soon as you started the Sens Chirp blog. Great site! A ton of interesting comments and varying opinions from everyone who posts. I've watched every Sens game since the final game of the Caps series in 98. Hope to provide some of my insight now and again!

Also, while I agree with MLau's comment, I don't think people should be discouraged from posting because of a few pessimists. While some of their pessimism is warranted (especially after last year's disaster), they tend to take it too far and are simply looking to stir the pot.

First time poster, new member, but long time reader. I have followed this site for several years and check in daily. I think the site offers a unique blend of reasoned commentary and analysis, as well as robust discussion that sometimes strays over the top--indeed, it might get mired in the schoolyard, if not for your light and timely touch SC.

That said, I feel compelled to offer some critical observation. I can't imagine the energy and creativity required to do what you do on a daily basis, so I truly applaud you SC, but I also find that the posts have become flatter, with less analysis than in the past, and with far fewer topics that aren't from immediate events. Of course, this is compensated to some degree by the comments, which explore the gaps, but which also rarely attain your balanced insight. I suppose this might be part of the impetus for the new contributor, though speaking for myself at least, it would be nice to have more in-depth SC.

I guess we need to take up a collection so Chirp can quit his job and focus on the blog full time! Newsflash, many blogs are hobbies and the comment sections are where a lot of info and opinions are shared, discussed and debated. If you need more in depth analysis of what legacy Sylvain hit him with your purse Turgeon left behind, maybe you should subscribe to The Hockey News.

Total Hijacking, but with the new exit from SBP, I guess it applies to news these days.

Anyone ever take the bus from Barrhaven to SBP? Even from Fallowfield? How long does it take? I looked it up on OC transpo...says 1:45 to get to SBP from Fallowfield. Do buses not stop right near gate 2? They really drop you off a 20 minute walk away in the dead of winter?

We shouldn't even consider Zibanejad be part of next year team. We have 12 forwards signed one way contracts and highly unlikely we are going to see him play in NHL. He is better-off playing in Sweden.

On the D, we already missed on retaining D.Smith and now we are overly optimistic on our potential and current defensive unit.

Time will tell.

Cool...So OC Transpo says the 406 (Barrhaven one) is 45 mins from Bhaven and 25 from Bayshore.

Do they run often before and after a game, or is it a case of you have to leave with 5 minutes left in the game to make sure you get on the only bus? If they ran continuously for 30 mins after a game and then every 15 minutes up to say 2 hours after the game I don't see why not just park at Bayshore and get dropped off at the gate?

They run quite frequently. It's not a big rush. I got the parking passes with the season tickets this year, but another good idea is to go and buy a bus ticket for 2 bucks from Local Heroes or East Side Marios, etc. and leave your car parked in the restaurant lots. They are fast on the way back and beat traffic. Especially ESM in Kanata. They leave like 15 mins after game ends and has you back at the restaurant 10 mins after that.

I haven't taken the Bus from Barrhaven but my friend used to. Barrhaven-Fallo wfield-Baseline Stn -- then I think Bayshore-SBP -- it's a round about trip which did take her over an hour. We drive now... 20 min much faster. If I get to SBP early enough... I park in my big secret spot.. takes less than a minute to get out (most nights) and NO I'm not going to share the spot.. but it is paid parking.

I've been a reader here for a few years. Thoughts about the website? I liked the old version a lot better than the new version. I hate to be negative, but it was just easier to get the news and faster to navigate. Since the update, I hate to say it, but I went from a once or twice a day reader to a once a month reader. I just don't like having to "click through" to read the story. I miss just being able to load the site and read the latest news/gossip without having to click a million times. There are other, easier places to get my Sens info and I wish it was more positive feedback I'm leaving, Chirp, but I wish you the best with the site. If it ever goes back to a style similar to what it was, you know I'll be back often again.
