Heatley for Havlat- Senate Reform Ep. 04

(UPDATE 11:01 AM)- Episode 4 of Senate Reform is now available. You can find it under the highlights tab on the home page of this site.

In a trade that will certainly have some Sens fans talking (and others laughing), the Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks have pulled off a Sunday night blockbuster.  Headed to San Jose is former Senator Martin Havlat while on his way to Minnesota is Dany Heatley.

I know this may not be Sens news but I would be fascinated to hear what Sens fans think of this deal.  And just when you thought this trade couldn't get any more entertaining...the Ottawa Senators play their home opener against the Minnesota Wild.

That game just got a whole lot more interesting.

This deal means that Heatley's stock has dropped significantly. He was once an elite and now he's damaged goods. Heatley trades for a player who is a borderline 2nd liner. How the mighty have fallen.

All that being said, I personally worry for Heater. I think he has some lingering psychological issues that need dealing with.

Not true at all. As per Dreger,

Heatley has a modified no-trade. Had to submit a list of 10 teams he wouldn't go to before July 1. obviously Minny wasn't on that list.

Best part of Heatley getting screwed by the limited no trade is that it was Murray who set that up. So, in a round about, loose way, Murray gets a small victory seeing his has buried in Minny.

This proves how dramatically his stock has fallen. I would argue Ottawa got a better return in a situation where they were completely handcuffed. His declining production beside one of the best playmakers in the league, his no-shows in the playoffs and his general me-first attitude have made him damaged goods. I give it until Christmas until he demands a trade out of Minnesota. Good luck with the winters there though.

From what I've been lead to believe, it was a limited NTC... Once he asked for a trade the first time, he allowed for a clause to kick in that as of July 1st he could be traded to 20 teams. He had the right to veto any on his list of 10.

I would disagree, the Wild have one hell of a nice team coming up. Not only did they fleece SJ in the Setoguchi trade, now they have a top line sniper to play with Koivu.

The Wild had a great draft aswell, add Coyle (beast!!) from SJ and they have a nice crop of top 6 talent (Bouchard, Gillies, Brodin and Z.Phillips).

I would imagine their top 6 loks like this:

Setoguchi Koivu Heatley
Latendresse/Miettenen Bouchard Kassian/Gillies

Lots of option and a pretty nice top 6!
Quote

+1 #59 meadowdog 2011-07-04 01:03
In the first place, Tookie, Jonas Brodin is a dman, not a top-six forward. Colton Gillies is a stiff who doesn't even score at the AHL level. The Kassian you mentioned is Matt Kassian, not Zach Kassian (Buffalo drafted Zach). Matt's best year in juniors he scored 17 points in 72 games, not exactly top- six material. And have you looked at the Minnesota defense without Burns? Pretty sad indeed. Don't count on seeing Heatley in the playoffs anytime soon.

Good luck to Martin Havlat with the San Jose Sharks.

0 #64 THEBLACKTERROR 2011-07-04 05:50
What this proves to me are two things:

1) A limited NMC significantly improves the potential return on a player. There were 19 teams that Heatley could be traded to, which improves the return that Wilson could get. Sadly, Murray never had this option, is was SJ or SJ or SJ.

2) Heatley either didn't see this coming, or he asked for a trade in private and kept it out of the media. Regardless, the stories about the trade didn't get out, which also improved the return.

If Heatley is worth Havlat now, he would have been worth a ton more back when the Senators moved him. Very sad in hindsight that all Murray was able to get of any value was Michalek.

If Michalek is able to get back to 60pts this year, then I'm ok with it, but unless that happens, Ottawa still came out big losers in that trade, and that is Heatley's fault. So fuck him.

They basically gave away Ehrhoff so they could afford him, then had to trade away good assets to get Burns.

Heatley didn't have to wave anything, No trades don't go away because you waived it once to be traded to another team. What does happen is they may change over time but this depends how it is structured at signing. Since the Hossa to Atlanta incident no trades have gone up drastically but in this case B. Murray was smart enough to give Heatley a modified no trade after the first few years but he obviously didn't considered the baby would request a traded during the first year of the contract.

One interesting thing to consider is Spezza might have the same stipulation, so the Sens might be able to trade him to any team not on a 10 team list.

Sorry...but you are WRONG about the NTC/NMC.

Heatley still had to waive it to be traded from SJ to Minny.

An NTC/NMC doesn't get voided by exercising that option. IF it did, then we could have traded Redden after he invoked his NTC.

An NTC/NMC stays in effect until the expiration of the contract or the expiration of the terms that an NTC/NMC was agreed upon.

I strongly disagree with you Tookie. Koivu is a poor man's 1st line C, Heatley is only good in 1 aspect of the game, Setoguchi still has lot to learn about consistency and fits better on a 2nd line until he does, and Bouchard is pretty injury prone, but plays well when healthy. They have a bunch of 2a type players, no true 1st line players. I would take Ottawa's lineup and depth in a minute over Minnesota's!

Both players should do well in their new buildings. Heatley is the star for Wild fans and should get lots of minutes. They are very passionate fans in Minny with a loud building. If Heater can get motivated he could do very well.
Havlat on the other hand has some pressure taken off of him as he will play second fiddle to Jumbo Joe and Marleau. If Marty gets to use his speed and go up against the second lines of other teams, he should potentially flourish.
I can see this trade working out for both teams.

Quoting Senator Stanley:
Both players should do well in their new buildings. Heatley is the star for Wild fans and should get lots of minutes. They are very passionate fans in Minny with a loud building. If Heater can get motivated he could do very well.
Havlat on the other hand has some pressure taken off of him as he will play second fiddle to Jumbo Joe and Marleau. If Marty gets to use his speed and go up against the second lines of other teams, he should potentially flourish.
I can see this trade working out for both teams.

You really think Heatley's problem for the last half decade has been motivation? He's a 1 way player that demands and expects 2 way TOI.

Luckily for them Minnesota is full of playmakers that might be able to give him those empty net 1 timers, but I hope they just hang at the bottom of the standings for the rest of his career. I used to like Minnesota, not anymore!

Thanks SC ... I like Senate Reform. Be sure to send the link to Yost ... I'm sure he'll enjoy it :-)
As for Heatley, the entire situation has left a bad taste in my mouth. All I can say (as others have) ... Karma is a &*)%. Enjoy the warm weather of Minnesota. Bet he now wishes he had added Minn to his list of 10 cities.

My point is that both players could flourish with their new teams. Heatley is not playing second fiddle to Jumbo Joe or Marleau in Minny. He will be first line. Minny is also a very good hockey market with educated hockey fans that will support him or bash him depending on his play.

Why are people saying Edmonton and Ottawa would be on the top of his list? If he was smart, he would put neither on the list because there is no way Murray or Tambelini would trade for him anyway. It would essentially then be a 12 team list.

Agreed, was just discussing this earlier with my co-worker, but we came to the conclusion neither of us thinks Heatley is smart enough for that.

Heatley's a douche. I think that's all that really needs to be said.

I just watched the new Senate Reform video you posted Chirp....It was kind of cool seeing Gyllenhal...er. .I mean Zibanejad at the Sens table on the 2nd day of the draft handing out jersey's and greeting S.Prince, etc...

Are you kidding? Heatley? Smart? I'm sure Ottawa and Edmonton were on the list. He's not that bright.

Haha you're so right. The IF in my sentence was key. I am sure he put both OTT and EDM on the list...

I liked the episode, but I would've like to hear names mentioned during their meeting. If they really want to give the fans more of an inside look they should've shown us the list before they were going to make the picks. I don't understand why they hid it even though we know the results.

I guess Edmonton must've been at the top of Heatley's list of 10 teams he didn't want to play for. Ottawa is probably second on that list. Well, he got what he deserved! I hope Havlat kicks starts producing big for the Sharks, just to rub it in Heatley's face.

I assume that Ottawa and Edmonton were NOT on the list as those 2 teams would not trade for him anyway.
Five would be all other Cdn teams. The other five -- who knows. SJ wins that trade,.

I think the Sharks just became better and you can now cross Minnesota out of the playoffs.

Heatley can't skate... he has no desire to improve himself in the off-season. I wonder if his ego took a hit with this trade.

Just think he also has to play 3 games each in Edm, Van & Cal where he is not liked very much.

I'm already looking forward to the Sens home opener on October 11th. Dany The Douche Bag Heatley will get the same reception as he did on December 2, 2010. The Heatley jerseys will be flying on the ice that night. Very glad for Edmonton Oilers fans also as they will get a chance to boo him during three games this season. Karma a bitch Heatley. Good luck to Martin Havlat with the San Jose Sharks.

Let's hope the Sens put up a better showing than they did in the SJ game. Of course, Elliott won't be in net.

I know he's D, which is why I said they are looking good as a team. Zidlicki, Schultz, Brodin, Zanon.

You should go to bed, you dont know what your talking about, that top 6 puts our to shame.

My god, Tookie, if you don't like the players on the Sens that much... why not cheer for another team?

Have you ever said anything positive about the Sens?

Really talking about Karma..

Not sure on how true this is or where it came from -- but one commenter on TSN mentioned that Cory Clouston is in line for an assistant coaching job in Minny.

Now that would be real funny.

How long before Heatley wants out?

If Clouston does get a job with the Wild I will laugh even harder, I hope he gives Heatley a reduced role.

Such a bad trade for Minnie. Heatley was declining when he left Ottawa, kept going downhill in San Jose and will not get any better. He isn't a guy to lead a team, that is clear and San Jose was a dream set-up for him and he is being jettisioned after only 2 seasons.

@Tyrant...

i remember you rambling on about how Mark Stone would always be a bad skater and that it was an issue of genetics etc.

is quote from Randy Lee is for You.....

Director of player development Randy Lee said if Stone’s skating catches up with his scoring touch, he has got a great future.

“He’s a below-average skater and he knows it,” said Lee.

“So he knows there are things he has got to work on.

“And we told him there are a lot of guys here with skating limitations and they thought they couldn’t get better. But they can. They can improve.

“People think, ‘Oh, that’s just what they are.’ But no, it’s not a handicap if you’re willing to work at it.”

I hate to state this - but WTF do you all think ottawa was on his list of 10 teams.

HE knows we'd never want him back - he put 10 other teams for sure.

Islanders, Edmonton, Phoenix, Winnipeg, Calgary I bet were all on the list.

Heatley comments on trade:

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2011/07/04/heatley-i-didn%e2%80%99t-have-any-idea-until-they-talked-to-me-yesterday-but-thats-the-way-it-goes/

“Yeah,” he said, he thought it was unfair. “I think anybody I’ve played hockey with will tell you that’s not true. Obviously with being traded a few times in my career and probably not the smoothest trades in history, things like that are going to get said. But I feel like I’ve always been a good teammate and someone guys want to play with.”

Thats what dany heatley just said in an article on his trade to minnesota. You gotta be joking in the last 2 sentances
