As I mentioned on Twitter earlier this afternoon, the Sens issued qualifying offered to all of the restricted free agents with the exception of Cody Bass, Jason Bailey and Ryan Potulny.
That means the other five players received offers including Bobby Butler, Eric Condra, Roman Wick, Geoff Kinrade and Kaspars Daugavins.
After the magical run the guys down in Binghamton went on this Spring, Bryan Murray and the Sens had to make some tough decisions. Bass and Potulny both played key roles in the teams march to the Calder Cup and the decision the let them walk was not an easy one.
Potulny and Bass will likely receive offers from elsewhere.
Wish I could have updated the site a little sooner but I spent the afternoon on Eagle Creek Golf Course in a Nine and Dine put on by the Ottawa Senators. The event was attended by a number of Sens prospects including Mark Stone, Jakob Silfverberg, Ben Blood, Corey Cowick and Stephan Da Costa.
Each of those guys will attend the Sens Development Camp which gets under way starting tomorrow morning.
The roster and schedule for the Camp can be found here.
And just a quick reminder for those of you that aren't already- you can follow SensChirp on Twitter right here.
two wild cards heading into the season will be dacosta and filatov.
theoretically you could throw silfverberg and regin into the mix as well.
Da Costa and Silfverberg were both at the event tonight. Really doesnt sound like there is much chance Silfverberg stays in NA this year.
And what about Stone? I have my doubts about his game translating to the NHL, but a goal scorer is usually a goal scorer at any level.
You would think he has a chance at the National Junior team though.
Thats a shame, AHL would make a nice stepping stone for him.
No pun intended lol
Sad about Bass. He is a great character person.
Potulny will make it somewhere.
There are a lot of younger players that are not working out on other teams that have not been qualified:
Hanson, Brunnstrom, Bergfors -- curious to see who else is not signed. Is it the teams these players were on? or coul that just not play in the NHL?
It's how it works, so no surprise. He's 19, and because he plays CHL, he cannot be in AHL until he's 20 (so after next season he will most likely join Bingo down the stretch).
I'm glad he's going back to junior for a year, gives him a chance to back up his season (gives him a chance to prove he can put up points without Glennie). Also, he has a chance to play on Canada, which is huge for development. Still has a few things to work on according to things I've read on him too before he's pro ready.
Sorry not Chirp lol, but I will weight in if you don't mind!
I read somewhere a month or two back that if Silfverberg doesn't make Ottawa, he may return to Sweden (this was after Dorion said he was coming over, so there is contradiction)
As for the young guys who weren't qualified. Hanson isn't good (career AHLer).
Brunnstrom I'm assuming has the talent, but not the work ethic to be an NHL guy (probably ends up back in Sweden)
Berfors is interesting, he has the talent to be a top6 forwards, but clearly there is something wrong (work ethic most likely). I'm sure someone will snatch him up though.
No Filatov then?
Very happy they offered a contract to K-Daug, but unfortunately I don't think he'll sign. He probably wants to play at a top level, and might sign in Russia. :( He could have been captain...
nope, He's on vacation right now with his family in the Dominican Republic and would have to return home to Russia first to get his work visa issues sorted out.
He has stated that he will be arriving in Ottawa in early August.
I was wondering the same thing.
Suposly the Jets did not qualify Athony Stewart
Stewart is 6'3 and 230 pounds and only 26 years old would any of like to see Murray maybe sign Athony Stewart.
he was just traded a few days ago, doesnt have enough time to get moved here.
i read on the ottawa citizen website that filatov has to go back to russia according to brain murray so he can get a work visa processed. and plus filatov is on vacation with his family in the dominican
i know this sicne he said it him self http://www.formspring.me/filat28
it was comfirmed by CBJ last year that it is the real official filatov and not some fake.
yeah its true, on twitter, Stewart said U.F.A
i would be really interested in him
Astew22 anthony stewart
U.F.A.
Kopecky was traded from Chicago to Florida.
It's too bad that Silfverberg will likely return to Sweden for another year. I thought there was a good chance he'd be competing for a spot with the Sens (or play in the AHL).
BTW - what happened with MacT ... where did he end up?
That was the same thing with Cowen. When a player is drafted out of the CHL there is a clause that if they don't make their NHL club they have to be returned to junior if they are still eligable.
Are you kidding Elliot got them Landeskog for Anderson.
I couldnt agree more. Tank now or forever hold your peace. They tanked and now they have a LW or RW to play with Duchene for the next 5-6 years.
he is a former 1st rounder 4th overall, must have some skill.
he could be another of those low risk high reward player.
What are your thoughts???
only a 7th round pick.
Have you heard if we are getting a new scoreboard for the 2011-2012 season????
I'm looking at it as Anderson and Zibandjad for Landeskog...
I'm looking at it as Anderson and Zibandjad for Landeskog and Elliot...
...and they have no goalie to stop the puck for 5-6 years.
I would take that deal any day, I really wanted Lando but Elliot is shit!
I'm looking at it as Anderson and Zibandjad for Landeskog and Elliot...
I would take that deal any day, I really wanted Lando but Elliot is shit!
I agree, you can't just say Anderson for Landeskog because we knew someone was coming in the draft. Considering we ended up with a true # 1 goalie who can actually win games on his own is key to the move and that gives Lehner more time to develop. While we would have liked 5th overall, getting Zibandjad is a bonus as long as he pans out.
I remember reading all the messages awhile back about how bad Murray had been doing as GM, but take a look at what the future holds now. I say good job!
Hey I'm not complaining either way! The Anderson and Filatov trades have been steals, hopefully they both pan out...
I think a lot of the criticism of Murray was entirely justified. His free agency moves and some of the contracts he handed out were questionable at best. There were a couple of mitigating circumstances though, the guy who held his job before him had raped the organisation of future viable prospects and he has a megolamanic owner who thinks we have a god given right to win.
However, since he has been given the clear instruction to rebuild the team (which happened at least a year later than it should have done) he has been on top form with barely a false move. I question the 3rd year of the Phillips deal but that's about it. It would be nice to be able to move Kuba, but he's only got himself to blame for that one.
would love to see puemple and stone on the junior squad! finally some forwards.....
As for those wondering why Lehner or Filatov aren't at the dev camp - it's a dev camp.
It is mind boggling so many people have trouble grasping this...
well Filatov is trying to make it in time for the camp
http://twitter.com/#!/allenpanzeri
thanks for not agreeing to a trade Chris!
JK
6 years ($4.5M a year)
Could be something to do with the HHOF announcement today
I think there were a whole bunch of off ice reasons for why Phillips was resigned and there is the fact that Murray doesn't like letting people walk out the door. Of players that have been in the organisation for a considerable length of time, Redden is the only one that springs to mind.
The Phillips signing is made worse because of the defensive prospects we have and the potential logjam at the blueline which could inhibit progression of those prospects. If Kuba or Gonchar weren't around I'd be much happier with Phillips being here and truth be told, I'm not that pissed about it anyway.
We have room for a utility player like Shannon (might be a healthy scratch more often than not).
Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-Foligno-Alfy
Greening-Regin-Condra
Z Smith-Winchester-Neil
I see a full roster there. Maybe Foligno/Regin being interchangeable.
Any sort of injury would force us into a callup situation which I think our most NHL ready callups are likely on one way contracts in the bigs (Condra/Greenin g), but Shannon would easily slot into any line, I guess a player for considerations internally might be Daugavins.
Build up the young guys, let them battle for jobs and positions on the depth chart.
Go ahead and low-ball Richards or whatever but anyone worth having is going to get overpaid by someone else.
if he gets his hitting game up. stop deflecting goals into his own net more then any other D man out there, the dust will be removed from my eyes and I beT i'll see some real value there.
If he's prepared to sign a contract knowing that he's the 13th forward I'm all for it.
Phillips had a down year last year like the rest of the team. Do you know how many other team's hearts broke when Phillips signed in Ottawa? He may not be the best dman in the league on either side of the puck, but without Elliott in net and a better d partner, you should see Phillips return back to form, a solid all around shutdown dman who rarely is ever out of position and makes smart plays with the puck.
And yes, whoever challenged (Miguel? FloridaSensFan? ) me while I was on the road and couldnt reply.
I'll take your bet of Sens make the playoffs, I say they dont.
Interesting idea, and I do like that Daugavins has a chance there but why Michalek on the LW? he shouldn't have to be in that position anymore.
Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Regin-Foligno-Michalek
Greening-Condra-Alfredsson
Winchester-Smith-Neil
HAHA Thanks I needed a laugh!
Phillips has not had one down year just like everybody else - Phillips has had at least 2 bad years and he wasn't that great the year before that.
He has to bounce back big and he has to stop passing the puck to opposing centres who are standing in front of our net. I lost count of the number of times the camera would pan to Phillips after a goal against last year and he would be looking skywards or shaking his head.
I'm looking forward to Phillips having a good year next year but it's more of a will be pleasantly surprised feeling than a solid expectation. His best years are behind him, that's not a reason to completely throw him under the bus, but it is a reason to be disappointed with the contract he was given.
If I were him I would want to wait to see who we get and loose in FA
Above was what I said tookie but when we see who we are going to ice I may want in on the bet.
After training camp we can talk.
As is I am hopeful but would like to see who is going to be our second line center before I take the bet
No way Alfie drops to3rd line. At least not with this lineup... Oh and that 1st line has ZERO defensive game. Need either Michalek or Alfie to keep them honest
There's no concern over his contract when we won't be near the cap during the next three years.
Him staying is part of the rebuild to provide a 25 minute guy you can rely on while other guys learn the ropes.
Ask Crosby if he feels it's a good contract - he seems to think Phillips is tough to play against.
Anything new on Oshie?
I was the one that challenged you to the bet!
Loser takes on the name "Iknownothingab outhockey" for a year!
I say Sens make the playoffs
Based on:
their play once Anderson arrived at the end of the season,
Better coaching
A goalie that will stop the occasional puck
A better defense play with a reliable backstopper
A Healthy Alfie, Spezza, Michalek
Make or break years for Foligno/Regin
options of about 6 different successful line combinations
one signed UFA
better depth then we have ever had,
you will be proven wrong Tookie!
it is free and open to the public
Yes it is... 1:30 to 3:00..
Also apparently Filatov said he is hoping to get to the camp tomorrow...
He may not be perfect, but given the situation the sens are in, he's ideal for this team. If any D shouldn't be here it's Kuba, then maybe Gonchar. Phillips is a fixture, let's just accept it and move on.
think of the lines not being numbered.
besides phillips is a top D-man he will protect the puck.
Are you hedging that if some of those things don't happen the bet is off?
I tend to think this team could make the playoffs but it's far from a lock.
I'm not as negative as Tookie but not as positive as Johne.
Oshie got a qualifying offer from St. Louis which means they intend to sign him. I think talks of him coming to Ottawa cooled down a couple days ago though, after the start of the draft.
Michalek - Spezza - Butler
Filatov - Foligno - Alfie
Greening - Smith - Neil
Regin - Winchester - Condra/Shannon/ ~Da Costa
Phillips - Gonchar
Cowen - Karlsson
Rundblad - Lee/Carkner
Anderson
TBA
Obviously chemistry will rule in the end, but I think this setup puts 1 developing offensive player (Butler, Filatov) on both of the 1st 2 lines along with 2 defensively responsible players (Spezza-Michale k, Alfie-Foligno).
It also shows why BM thinks he may not need to sign that top 6 UFA anymore, though I think he'll still kick some tires there and try and get 1 more.
Kuba gets traded, I just don't see how no cap floor teams would be interested.
I wasn't on the Regin bandwagon last summer, Foligno is still my guy, but I'd be amazed if Regin has as bad of a year this year. I really expect a heck of an offseason to avoid a repeat.
BM indicated that his 21st pick was in discussion for an nhl player at 1 point, I wonder if Oshie was that player? If so BM must be really high on this Noesen kid. I must say I enjoy when a good GM goes "off the board" like that (according to the press and their amateur rankings).
not as an insult cause I consider you pretty level headed, but why does every line need balance? This isnt NHL 11. I think you put Spezza/Butler/F ilatov on the ice at the same time because you intend on not playing defense at all during their shift. If you're worried about defense, put Phillips/Cowen/ Lee out there at the same time. While I do think balance can be important, 2 top 6 mediocre lines gets you zilch for goals.
And fyi, Spezza and Michalek just don't work. Avoid them on the same line at all cost.
I don't take it as an insult, so no worries, but it is pretty basic coaching. Balance is more important in real life then in NHL11. We are trying to build the next Boston Bruins type complete roster, so why not start with complete lines from the beginning of the build?
Our team is going to depend on being able to roll 4 lines. Having a top line that can't play defense would make it so easy for other teams to stack their top lines that can play defense against. Obviously if Filatov lights it up or connects well with Spezza he deserves to be on his line, but I also want to temper my expectations of Filatov off the bat ... he's still developing and a work in progress.
It's more taking the safe approach to the roster as opposed to hoping best case scenario. Neither way is wrong, i think the coaches will just start with the safe approach and see who develops with who.
I just don't think we have the caliber of players that Boston has YET, now 2-3 years down the road if our prospects mature into their potential, then I think we can do that. But with a team starved for talent, I definitely believe in rolling our lines with similar talents 1) pure offense 2) two-way 3/4) Energy/Grinders
lets not forget the added dimension of Karlsson/Rundbl ad, that's essentially a 7th forward on the ice. And with Anderson in net, there should be far less of a fear than what we had with Elliott in net that poor backchecking is an instant goal.
If Murray finds a way to move Kuba and get something for him I'll forgive him for the Phillips signing....lol
Why do you all insist on putting Foligno center?
Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Regin-Dacosta-Michalek
Foligno-Shannon-Alfie
Winchester-Smith-Neil
2 quick and agile scoring lines, 1 quick defensive but still able to counter attack line, and one energy line. All 4 lines have defensively responsible forwards.
Mclean is big on 200 ft of responsible hockey and puck control. Each line has the capability of controlling the puck in the offensive zone and the energy line has the grit to get it to the net when the skill is lacking.
Agreed we will not be Boston for a while, and Filatov should get a chance with Spezza during camp just to see if they have some instant chemistry. Inside I feel like we just gained a future superstar, but I'm just trying to also be somewhat realistic that he could fall short of expectations THIS year, like Foligno and especially Regin did last year. Long term though, I'd be amazed if he's not a pillar of our top 6.
Definitely the difference comes down to how we'd balance/align our roster, but if you look at Detroit's example Datsyuk and Zetterberg often play on different lines 5 on 5, so I'm not sure the stache would put all eggs in 1 basket. But obviously I don't know, just guessing.
Because he played there some last year, Da Costa may not be ready, and unless Regin or Smith make a huge jump they don't belong on the 2nd line ... at least that's my reasoning. I wish we had a better 2nd line C and hopefully someone wows us all at camp. Also I'd definitely put him or Winchester center over Shannon.
Also I'm shocked that most people have written off Regin so fast. I feel like I'm repeating myself, but last year was a down year for pretty much everyone, especially when you're lined up with Kovalev every game. It also looked like Regin and Clouston we're clashing. Look for a bounce back year for our great Dane.
Agreed, getting away from Clouston may help Regin as much as Filatov's change of scenery. Regin re-positioning himself as a threat to play top 6 minutes would be very welcomed, especially if Alfie is injured to start the year.
Regin oozes top 6 skill, a hell of a find by the scouts. Consistency may be a bit of an issue, but as you said a new coaching staff can make all the difference.
Alright so what about this line up then...
Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Greening-Regin-Michalek
Foligno-Shannon-Alfie
Winchester-Smith-Neil
Shannon played center for most of last season and stepped in big time when Spezza was injured. Foligno only played center for a few games and while I watched was all over the place and played more like a winger anyway. IMO it was a failed experiment. I think these lines look a little better.
So let's say Filatov, Butler, Regin, Foligno all prove they deserve top 6 minutes along with Spezza and Alfie, who gets it and who plays with Spezza in your opinion? Regin and Butler have both previously shown chemistry with Spezza, and we all hope Filatov will do the same. As was said, Foligno-Alfie-M ichalek was a good line last year.
This is completely theory linecrafting, just for fun. Bottom line is it would be nice to have possibilities again.
filatov - spezza - butler
michalek - foligno - alfie
greening - smith - regin
condra - winnie - neil
karlsson - lee
phillips - cowen
rundblad - gonchar
kuba
i think regin would eventually bump foligno out because i believe like some others that regin will have a very good bounce back year.
and i still hold up for the kubda gaborik deal - i know people wont like it but come on, the guy can score and yes he does have a massive contract, but it does three years left so it could be tradeable as well.
I think Butler and Foligno both have an easier time playing in the bottom 6.
Butler's familiarity with the other newcomers
Foligno can play the role of a grinder
Both Filatov and Regin to me need the other talent to up their own game and thrive off of other top 6 talent
Unproven with Filatov, but that's what everyone is thinking/hoping
Regin's playoff success with Spezza
While Butler without a doubt benefits from Spezza, he does not have the ceiling that I see out of Filatov and Regin.
http://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie - MIN puts defenceman Cam Barker on waivers.
Interesting take. I personally would rate Filotov > Foligno > Regin, but I don't think that's a surprise. I do agree that Butler can probably create his own on most lines and the familiarity with Smith, Greening, Condra etc. would help too.
I think Foligno could be the Holmstrom type if the coach wants him in that role, but I still think he will eventually find that scoring touch we are waiting for. I could see a nice increase from last year's 14 goals, to a healthy 20 this year, with a good 40-50pts.
This. Thank you. I"ve been saying it for quite a while on other boards.. They just don't click together at all.
I have absolutely no concern over the money we gave Phillips, the money is irrelevant for the next two years at least. My issue is with the 3rd year. I would prefer him off the books when the time comes and Karlsson, Rundblad and Cowen are hopefully established in the NHL.
I think there will be better options than Phillips at 3.5 in two years time available that we won't be able to go for once the cap becomes an issue for this team again.
The deals haven't ben bad for us and if we had signed players like kuba, gonchar, kovalev, and anderson their contracts would be more cap friendly and easier to move when needed.
front load the contracts murray!
Sounds crazy.. but what if Murray offered Richards big money for about 2 yrs? Zibby... won't be really ready until then... interim fix... but let's face it.. Richards is not coming to Ottawa. Is he going to Philly?
Why do you all insist on putting Foligno center?
Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Regin-Dacosta-Michalek
Foligno-Shannon-Alfie
Winchester-Smith-Neil
...
Where is Greening & Condra. Both will be on the Sens next season.. Greening is the Sens fastest skater - big, hard shot and pretty good defensively. Condra is defensively smart and sees the ice really well.
Just don't see DaCosta making it out of camp. He may need some time in Bingo.
hopefully he hit the gym hard all summer and put on some mass...
for the record, i say say foligno > regin... and i agree that we see 15-20 goals from foligno and abot 40 points
ie breakout seasons for regin, foligno, filatov, cowen and runblad.
healthy alfie, mm, spezza and anderson
that is a hell of alot of what ifs. would love to see it but i dont think it should be expected...
im totally finecwith icing our current line up where everyone competes each night but we fall short on skill ending up with some exciting hockey but also a great pick next year.
