(UPDATE 9:57 PM) With the 21st pick, the Sens take Stefan Noesen. Has comparisons to Corey Perry. Murray really seems to like the guy.
(UPDATE 7:59 PM)- With the 6th overall selection in the NHL Entry Draft, the Ottawa Senators select Mika Zibanejad. A little bit surprised to see him go this high but they liked him. And like I said so many time, Couturier was just not a player they liked. Ottawa is still looking at a few options with the 21st pick but it is definitely in play.
(UPDATE 5:42 PM)- According to Ian Mendes, Murray is still saying that the team will stay at the 6th spot. That doesn't mean they won't keep trying. If the team does move up, and they want to, it will be a last minute phone call to get it done. Gaborik rumours have been dismissed by most by Oshie still seems like a possibility.
(UPDATE 3:14 PM)- The Sens are still actively trying to move up in the draft. Was told a little earlier that the price has come down a little bit but not to the point where they can make a deal. As I mentioned in the comment section, Ottawa has had discussions regarding a Top 6 forward. Gaborik and Oshie are the names rumoured right now. Just rumours though
Pretty early on in the NHL season it became clear that the Ottawa Senators were not going to be a playoff team in 2010/2011. And since that realization, fans of the Sens have been looking forward to this day. Later tonight, in Minnesota, the NHL will hold its Annual Entry Draft.
It's a draft that some are calling the biggest in the history of the Ottawa Senators franchise.
With still so many possibilities in play, today figures to be an extremely busy one for the Bryan Murray and the rest of his staff. They spent the majority of yesterday finalizing lists and trying to prepare themselves for any scenario that may be tossed their way.
That preparation will certainly be important with so many scenarios still being discussed. Five teams are scheduled to pick before the Sens step up to microphone and I don't think anyone can say for certain what any of those clubs have planned. That's what is going to make today so entertaining.
Here are a few rumours/news/updates heading into today...
- The Sens are trying to move up. The price is too high now but the team is hopeful that price will come down on Draft Day and possibly on the draft floor. Still think the primary target is the 3rd overall pick but that's only if Gabriel Landeskog is still on the board. Was told that as of this morning, the team still believes they have a shot to move up.
- The 21st overall selection is definitely in play. I would be shocked if the Sens actually made that pick. There are a few scenarios that could play out- They could use it to move up their selection earlier in the round, they could use it in a deal for a roster player, or they could try to move that pick up using one or more of their other picks.
- I have been asked about this one countless times and yes, I have heard some buzz about the Sens being interested in TJ Oshie. Travis Yost has been on this one for awhile now and there is apparently something to it. Although at this point, I was told nothing is close.
- A player the Sens like (currently ranked 12th by TSN) is Barrie Colts centre Mark Scheifele. They would likely have to move up with their second 1st rounder if they want to grab him.
- The price to move up is high. Tim Murray mentioned yesterday that one team had asked for Erik Karlsson plus the 6th overall. That team is believed to be the Edmonton Oilers. Can't help but wonder if that means the Oilers are looking at a defenceman with that pick.
I will continue to update the blog as I get updates. Enjoy Draft Day everyone!
7th Jets
I'm in heaven right now.
20 minutes from now.
FACKKKKKKKKKKKK KKKK
Now we can draft a player that we need: a center.
Does Larsson Fall?
Landeskog will be a 2nd liner, not the winger that Spezza needs.
I wish I could see my - rating after this comment. Sorry guys, the truth hurts.
Your comment is absolutely legitimate.
We don't need a winger who only put up 66 points in Junior. We need a bonafide centre to play behind Spezza.
This is good for the roster, people will understand in due time.
I'm hoping for Strome/Huburdea u or Couturier.
Also glad to see this guy http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150231728574477&set=a.75761324476.72614.5800809476&type=1&ref=nf
Question is can the Devils pass on a top D man?
I have a feeling nobody likes NYI.
According to Chirp, IN BOLD
Either way, the Sens should trade up the 21st and take Oleksiak!!!
nuff said,
Cant believe Larsson went 4th. He's the best player in the Draft.
lmaooo
I have the same feeling sadly. I wanted Strome so bad. Well maybe Couts ends up proving people wrong. Or do we actually go with a defenseman? I hope not....
I feel sorry for anyone drafted by the Islanders. At least it won't be much of a change from their junior rinks, Nassau is a dump.
predictable!
i hate to say it but if the islanders take strome, i think we gotta take hamilton
He put up the same amount of point as Huburdeau in less games of a worse team.
Nuff said.
One more year in Junior and he'll be ready. Or- he can pull a Jeff Skinner in the offseason and play next year :)
Up yours Islanders.
9 points?????
I got extra screwed this year. HAHA.
Glad the Sens got him.
Now I have no idea who my Jets are going to take.
Would have preferred Couturier.
Very disappointing.
This just in: Strome has just been offered a 15 year contract by Charles Wang...
Zibenejad has probably the highest ceiling in the draft this is great.
Alfie, Karlsson, Lehner, Rundblad, Silfverberg, Petersson, Sorenson, Zibanejad, etc. Am I missing anyone?
I'm surprised we didn't call on the services of Forsberg last year...
Petersson - Zib...- Silfverberg....
Couturier has officially slipped.
Tim Murray quite often sounds like that. It is nothing new and I am so stocked with this pick. If developed properly his ceiling is very high.
It is proven.. the hockey gods hate Ottawa.
Yeah he's a bit of a downer aha I was surprised he didn't address the fans
Are you not happy we drafted Zibanejad? This guy is going to be great
lmao u were wheeling hartnells wife, now couturier
We can thank the Leafs for that
Thanks for clarifying Mitchell. I was sure Gatineau was the promise land..
zibanejad wont be playing for ottawa for at least 2 years
Thanks Atlanta.
Dude. Relax. We still have Cody Bass... :)
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
lmfao jason ur not gonna quit it eh
Bro, I should have became an NHL player.
lmfaoo
no , its the right way to do it..
funny that theyd compare him to backstrom....pe rhaps they mean the physicality of a fisher with the skill of a backstrom?
SC has wing sauce all over his fingers. He ain't gonna dirty his Blackerry...
How's the party at St-Louis? Would have loved to see the confused faces when they announced Zibanejad.
think of...
Vermette 2.0 (Jakob Silfverberg) same speed, but a bit more offensive skill. able to manage and play big minutes and be physical.
Fisher 2.0 (Mika Zibanejad) w've heard of a man playing in a boys league. well this is a boy managing to play in a mens league. and he hits with the best of them. he scores and his still young he is only going to get better.
Get Excited! if you aren't enough already lol
They are coming!
if you had to choose one that is. my smart money is on Ty Rattie
http://www.silversevensens.com/2011/6/24/2242848/senators-select-mika-zibanejad-6th-overall#storyjump
Adam Larsson=Embarra ssed
WOW. I thought people on here made stuff up!!! Thats RIDICULOUS. It`ll be like the entire leafs roster for Malkin.
Yes!!!! Well were guaranteed atleast 1 of these!!!
C'mon Murray ge it done!!
McNeill over Biggs if he's still there I hope.
Biggs will be a 3rd liner (average hands, speed and not much creativity) Ottawa already has enough of those.
Go Sens go,
Spendzza
We'
The french guy is their GM Pierre Gauthier.
ya San Jose got fleeced... 3 1st rounders for BB... and a 2nd RLY?
San Jose just got fleeced on this deal. That`s 3 first round picks! And Burns is unrestricted in one year. Wilson is getting desperate.
ya i kno theyre retarded ! so happy they got ripped off
The Sens have absolutely NO LUCK. Crap...
Huge trade!!! That must of been coming for a while from Wilson. He just signed yesterday.
Would have been nice to have him in Ottawa.
Oh well. Go get a winter coat Devin!
Stop being such a downer this is a good draft for the Sens we are going to get a good player just relax.
TOOKIE NOT ROOKIE...damn spellcheck.
Ps Chirp: is there a way to say only see 50 posts at a time? Phone browser slow as carkner with so many posts.!
Nope, I'm big on him too!
K good here it comes after this commercial. I'm really hoping the best. he had a bit of a spot on senate reform. just like mcneil, He'd be a great offensive threat for our team! if we don't get him now and Burke isn't shoving his nose over the ottawa table maybe we'll get him 35th
nope...comparab le to CORY PERRY!!!!
Go Sens GOOOOOO!!!!
Spendzza
I said so eariler!
GO SENS GO!!!!!
also i think there was mention of a player for player deal. wonder who!
second round starts tomoro!
yup, i hear that they were high on him
Apparently he was higher than strome on their list.
If its not Rattie, you should get with SensfanMtl and comfort each other.. He's already half cut so it should be fairly easy action.
2 2nd rounders
All the drafted players do (2011 NHL Entry Draft)
/facepalm
its the year of the draft. all players get number 11
Bob Mckenzie compare Noesen to Lapierre but Sens hoping for Perry. Slight gap there.
Happy with the 3 picks all in all. Good stuff.
http://www.myp2pforum.eu/threads/57596-NHL-2011-Entry-Draft
thanks
Try atdhe.ws they have a stream for tonight's, might have one tomorrow.
Other than that, you're out of luck. Don't really miss much anyway, unless you REALLY want to see who the Sens take, but even then just click refresh on nhl.com
considering murray was the one who drafted perry I'm going to go ahead and assume that murray knows this kid a bit better than mckenzie does
holy shit, they were eyeing down this guy i think
Most teams have several jerseys available for guys on their lists. It's pretty standard.
But say Mika Zibanejad, Stafen Noesen or Matt Puemple have an unbelivable camp. And I'm not saying they well (for fuck sakes hate to see one of you guys bitch about it) were will anyone fit on are roster. someone's got to go. someone of our Championship Binghamton Senators deserves a jump up. our depth mind boggles me.
You beat me to the punch DenisVial. But yeah...its not that far fetched for a professional sports club to have several jerseys with several different names on them. In fact...they probably have a box of jerseys with every player they can possibly conceive picking.....wor se case scenario they take the stitching off.
And the show must go on....
The funny thing about pro sports is what they do with jerseys they produce for sports teams that end up losing championships. I have seen Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, etc. Superbowl champion jerseys on kids in Mexico because they ship them to countries where they are donated to the poor. Look for Vancouver stuff this winter when we all head to Mexico.
No, son
Ottawa caught wind that someone behind them liked Noeson and took him there; clearly they see something they like. I think TSN's first comparable was inaccurate or a mistake because to go from Lapierre to Perry comparable is a drastic jump. They didn't even have there professional picture of Noeson in the red jersey like they did for many.
Puempel is a great addition and was glad to here it. If Ottawa was picking 6th (which they did) I was hoping for Strome and believe he was on there radar, but when they missed him I think Ottawa said we'll take MZ and make a move for another offensive threat (Puempel).
Noeson could turn out to be a gem, you never know. I know nothing of the guy.
not a son
Haha Yeah I'll admit it did'nt make any sense..
apparently Zibby was higher on their list than Strome.
GO SENS GO!@
Yes, we got Kelly's 61st
based on the players they picked, they are looking a few years down the line for injecting some offensive punch.
hopefully we add an established top 6 tomorrow to keep the team competitive.
i dont want to start looking forward to the next draft by december...
that might be an ambitious comparison but i could think of worse scenarios.
Rounds 2 to 7 are on the NHL Network starting at 11 am.
I guess the Oshie & Gaborik deals are dead.
I think tomorrow could be interesting. Maybe going to a friends to watch on NHL Network... as she has that.. I don't.
3 first round picks... not too bad.
Haven't see any of them play.. but you guys are okay with Zib & Puempel... let's hope Noeson is Corey Perry.. wow what a pick that would be.
Really happy with Zibanejad; he's not a lock to make the team next year by any means, but his fate will largely be determined by how well Da Costa does at camp.
You are probrably correct in saying that Gaborik and Oshie deals are dead. I think with Troy Brower of Chicago going to the Capitals, is there a possibility that the Sens could sign Brooks Laich or Maxim Talbot as a UFA on July 1st?
is the nhl network considered nhl.com? seems obvious, but i dont know if that refers to there website or tv channel
2007, St. Louis.
you should watch the interview with Noeson that the Sens put up on facebook. Kid looks like he has a great attitude and comes across as a pretty smart guy. He wasn't a stuffed shirt like Zibanejad anyway.
It would be nice to see him get a year or two under KK in Bingo.
Murray now has the 60th pick in the 2nd round. One pick in the third, fourth, fifth. Two in the 6the & 7th....
How valuable are some of the players (not Greening, Butler, Condra, Z Smith) from the Calder Cup team in a trade?
Could Murray move up from 60th including someone like Potulny (yeah I know reported to go to Europe) The Dawg or Kellar.?
Disagree. ZBad will stay only if he is deemed ready not if he is better than DeCosta. The Sens will go with someone on their current roster or B Sens before they rush a prospect.
Zibanejad is too young to go to the ahl
i have same wonders on the trade front
Now for round 2 : I'd love it If Murray can swing Foligno + 60th for a higher pick to draft GRIMALDI.
Tomorrow could be very interesting.
Really thought there would be more trades tonight.
Players drafted out of Europe don't have an age restriction to play in the AHL. For purposes of the AHL regarding his age he CAN play in Bingo next year.
However, he can not play in Bingo next year, because he currently holds a contract in the SEL, so if he does not make the SENS while under contract with the SEL, you MUST go back to the SEL.
So Zib will be in Ottawa or the SEL next year, but due to his contract, not his age.
3 first round picks, cant complain, 3 players who wont play right away, have time to develop, and last but not least not help our team one bit next year so we can be bottom 5 again and have a shot at Yakupov & Galchenyuk!!!!
Well done Murray, execute the plan!
That said, he's 18, but he's 6"2' and 192lbs. He's already played with men for a year, and he's already got the body of a man. Pierre Dorion said last week that they felt that the player they would get at #6 would be able to jump right in and play next year.
I'd say that smart money is on Zibanejad making the team out of training camp as the 2nd line C, perhaps solely by virtue of the fact that he's already the 2nd best C in the entire Senators system.
Zib - great pick, was too much to move up clearly. He will take a little bit to develop, but certainly looks to be a great player down the road. This pick I was very happy with based on how the draft board looked at the time.
Noesen - Solid prospect, a bit off the board, but the 15-45 prospects are a total crap shoot. Heard on TSN that other teams were interested, nothing wrong with this pick at 21, if they feel he is something special, and really felt you couldn't move down to get him. (or take him with another one of our picks)
Puempel - This is where I struggle with the draft pick. Not because I don't think he's a solid pick at this spot, but rather because of the value we gave up in order to take this guy. Even if we picked this guy at 21, I'd accept it. 35 great.
To me, Zibanejad was a no-brainer at 6. I'm not convinced that any of the forwards taken before him will be noticeably better than Zibanejad will be.
I'll admit that I know nothing about Noesen, but they clearly identified something in him that they liked and were not afraid to make the pick.
I was really impressed with the move and pick of Puempel. Flipping 2 picks to move up is smart, and as it turns out, the guy they got is probably the best scorer in the entire draft. He was probably a steal at 24, if he hadn't had the hip problems, he probably would have gone top 10.
It's obviously too early to tell, but I think that the Senators drafted 3 guys tonight who are sure-fire NHL players. Even if they don't get another NHL'er out of this draft, I'd say that it's going to go down as a resounding success. Well done Ottawa Senators.
I disagree, he's not playing in Ottawa next year, he had something like 9pts last year, he's 18 and not rdy for the NHL. Another year in SEL will help him tremendously, no point in rushing the kid. Were still aiming for a top 5 pick next year!
I understand the desire for elite talent because our depth is great, and we need elite. But the difference between Puempel/jurco/s aad/jensen/phil lips/danault/gr imaldi/rattie/j askin/prince isn't really that noticible according tot he experts, and is a complete guess on who becomes the best, so this is where more is better. All those guys were still available at the time the sens moved up.
If you look at the elite franchises in the world. New England Patriots, Detroit Red Wings, these are the teams that ALWAYS trade down in drafts, gather loads of picks and have great developmental programs. You often hear about getting the best value for your picks, rather than getting the best picks itself. I just would have preferred Ottawa to sit tight, and grab two of those guys rather than one
But I'm not an expert, and BM is, and I'll trust that he felt those two guys were elite and way beyond the guys coming up in the 2nd round.
Here's some comparisons for guys in their rookie seasons playing in the SEL
Peter Forsberg, age 17 - 17pts
Mats Sundin, age 19 - 18pts
Daniel Alfredsson, age 21 - 6pts
Henrik Sedin, age 17 - 5pts
Daniel Sedin, age 17 - 12pts
Loui Eriksson, age 18 - 13pts
Nicklas Backstrom, age 17 - 0pts
Magnus Paajarvi, age 18 - 3pts
Johan Franzen, age 22 - 8pts
Mika Zibanejad - age 17 - 9pts
The point to all that? You can't base your opinion of the guy on what he put up as a 17 year old rookie in the SEL.
In the SEL, you play against grown men. In the CHL, you play against your own peer group. The SEL, therefore, is a much tougher league for a 17 year old to play in. On top of this, the larger ice surface lends itself to lower scoring games. On top of this, they play substantially fewer games in a season than they do in the CHL.
If you're interested in stats, a better measure of Zibanejad would be to see what he did when he played against his own peer group:
J20, 21pts in 27 games (again, at 17 playing against guys up to a max age of 20)
U-17 Team Sweden (world championships) - 9pts in 6 games
U-17 Team Sweden (all games) - 17pts in 9 games
U-18 Team Sweden (Ivan Hlinka) - 8pts in 6 games
U-18 Team Sweden (all games) - 23pts in 19 games
So, against his peer group, he's elite. If he had played in the CHL this past year, do you think he would have struggled? He's 6'2" and 192lbs, he would have DOMINATED the CHL.
Bottom line, the reason people are big on him is because people who scout hockey professionally think he's got superb long-term potential. I think they hit an absolute home run with this guy.
I also would imagine Zib played much fewer games than most of those guys you listed, since he played a lot of the year in junior. But that is pure speculation.
perry was also ranked 35th.
ive read a few months ago about noesen that apparently he is very underrated and should be going late 1st round, and i guess BM just knows it all. and plus his name has part of our team name in him, why not?
- called greening and smith and other forward prospects role players...the following three are meant to be top 6.
- was sold on Mika Z when he saw him be an impact player in the swedish playoffs vs men, as an 18 year old. is a big body who consistently wins battles in the dirty areas.
- Noesen took his team and lead them, projects to be top 9/top 6. is a complete player.
- all Peumpel does is score goals; is strong close to the net.
- karlsson, runblad, cowan, wiercioch and borowiecki will all be nhl defensemen.
Incorrect. 2010, Florida Panthers.
I think this is exactly the type of prospect Ott needs.
We drafted 3 very good players in the first round hats off to Murray and his staff.
We get excited about players we think would be great watching what is available online and others opinions but the reality is we know squat compared to our scouts.
Sounds like our list was Landeskog RNH Zibinejad if they had the first three picks, may have even been Landeskog Zibinejad RNH
Three sick top 6 players for our future, got to love it.
The only bummer is our team is not complate yet so it will be interesting who the scouts have their eyes on to trade for or get as FA for next seasons team.
I hope we get some more Gems today.
“It was a sacrifice we made at deadline day, to take a step back for this day. For us to get three players who were rated right around our top 15 players, I’m very happy about that.”
Assistant general manager Tim Murray and director of player personnel Pierre Dorion “really” pressed Murray to get the third first-round pick.
The Murray's seem to have these expectations.
Zibanejad - Floor = Two-Way T6F Ceiling = T3F
Puempel - Floor = Bust Ceiling = Goal Scoring T6F
Noesen - Floor = T9F Ceiling = Two-Way T6F
