Happy Birthday Spezza/SensChirp- MacLean It Is

(UPDATE 1:01 PM)- TSN's Bob McKenzie has indicated that the Ottawa Senators are in the final stages of making Paul Maclean their next head coach. An announcement is expected at some point tomorrow.

Bryan Murray has hired a coach on my birthday (and Jason Spezza's birthday) before. It was just a few years ago, on June 13th, that Murray hired Craig Hartsburg. Seemed like a good birthday present at the time but we all know how that hire ended up.

If Maclean is indeed Murray's guy, there is a chance he holds off until the Finals are over to make the announcement.  There is nothing that says you can't make a move like this while the Stanley Cup is being played but teams often decided to wait.

As I mentioned late last night, still no 100% confirmation that Maclean is the guy but it sure looks that way.  An email from one contact last night suggested that McKenzie was bang and Maclean will indeed be the next bench boss. McKenzie predicted on Twitter last night that the former Wings assistant ends up in Ottawa while MacTavish gets the top job in Minnesota.

Plenty of people asking about who the assistants might be in Ottawa and the names of both Kleinendorst and Cameron have been bounced around.  While I think they would both be fine candidates for the job I think it's important that the decision rest with whoever they go with as a head coach.

Will update this post if I track down anything new on the coach.

  • On a different note, I've been told that the NHL schedule is nearing completion and should be released in the near future. While it is still in draft form, the Senators apparently play their home opener against the Minnesota Wild. Calder Cup rematch, I suppose?
  • The second episode of Senate Reform is now available. You can find it under the highlights tab on the home page.

Happy birthday Chirp, hope you have a great one!

I'm excited that it seems McLean will land this gig, he would be my first choice out of the candidates interviewed. So far the overhaul of this team is going great IMO and now we get excited for draft day.

Speaking of draft day... yes I realize that the Cup could be won as early as tonight, but given the fact that the draft is looming also, and that they would want the new coach involved as part of the process, I would sure imagine they would not wait to make an announcement, rather get things rolling! My guess is that they will announce something today.

Happy B-day Chirp!

Senate Reform Episode 2 was much more interesting than episode 1 I found. However the length of the video still leaves me wanting more.

Did anyone else love the way they dealt with McNeil? His answers in the first interview were so robotic, so they take him out to breakfast to get what they want out of him - love it.

Happy Birthday, Chirp... and also to Spezza... Chirp you are in good company in sharing your birthday with the great Jason Spezza!

I don't suspect the coach will be announced on what could be the final game in the SCF. I personally suspect it will go to a game 7.

Get the coach and assistants hired... and then let's talk draft. Less than 2 weeks away for what could be the most important draft in Sens history.

happy birthday to you Chirp and to Jason Spezza, hope your day is all the best, should be an exciting time for you reporting the Sens buzz as well as it will be for us reading it, I haven't looked this forward to the start of next season for a little while to be honest, certainly pre-Heatley the douche acting like a whiney baby and asking for the trade.

Chirp, Ive been told MIN will open against CLB.

Lots of speculation in Winnipeg that HNIC will want Winnipeg's home opener. You know Leafs/Habs is always one matchup, so think of who that could leave to open up in Pegcity? Keep your ear to the ground on that one.

Happy Birthday SC! Keep up the good work. Here's hoping for a head coach announcement on your BD. However, if I was a betting man, I would put my money on an announcement following the SC Finals.

Happy bday Chirp, hope you have a nice time celebrating. Glad to see that the MacT prediction is not likely to come to fruition for the sens. MacLean really seems like the best fit, and MacT actually sounds like a pretty good fit for Minnesota to be honest.

With draft prospect interviews done, have you heard any scoop on who may have surprised in interviews? Any disappointments ?

I think this is a great hiring.

Exactly what the Sens need. Would have liked either him or Muller. MacT wouldn't have been bad, I guess.

Good on Murray though.

Could the Sens be the next Detroit Red Wings of the East? Countless Swedish players in the system, Mike Babcock 2.0... I sure hope so!

Happy Birthday Chirp! Don't worry about sharing it with Spezza, you clearly got all the smarts!

As for McLean being hired, nonplussed at best. The announcement leaves me lukewarm, as opposed to the over the top anger of a Cameron hiring or the unreal hot tub lather of a Muller hiring.

We just hired the best coach for the job. He's a winner, he's experienced, he knows how to work with European players, he's a POWERPLAY SPECIALIST, he's got credit for being a very good player back with the JETS! and most importantly he's from the Babcock coaching tree.

A much better hire than the other options. Particularly MacTavish.

Question I have is how the MacKenzie's & the Dreger's even get word about something like this.

Have they 'bugged' Murray's office. Someone is leaking the info? Or are spies sitting outside SBP?

It's amazing that these guys are so tuned in to everything.

But I'm happy with the signing. I think he was the right choice.

Power play specialist.... something the Sens so drastically need.
Better powerplay, much better goaltending = more wins.

The best thing about Paul Maclean is that Detroit fans are upset that he is leaving.

Previous to this year, Maclean ran Detroit's defence, turning it into one of the best units in the NHL. When McClennan left to join the Sharks, Maclean took over the offense and turned the D reigns over to Brad McCrimmon. The offense stayed strong under MacStache while the D suffered.

Detroit offered him a contract equivalent to HC pay and he turned it down to pursue an HC position. I am very happy with this potential announcement!

Really hoping Macleans Detroit/Babcock influence can do wonders for guys like: Da Costa,Petersson ,Regin,Silfverb erg,Karlsson, Rundblad

Heres hoping we can bring over Eaves and possibly another Wing this summer.

Eaves? Man he was a fringe player on the Sens and he's still a fringe player on Detroit, not what we need at all, we have about 10 Eaves type players sitting in Bingo....

0 #41 Johne 2011-06-13 13:13
Eaves is meh. Dime a dozen, injuries really hindered his development. Put Zack Smith in Detroit and he would put up the same numbers.
