  • We Aint Dead Yet

Everything that could go wrong for the Senators did in Game 4.

Despite being up 2-1 at the end of twenty minutes, you could tell the Senators were playing with fire. If not for the play of Craig Anderson, this game could have been ugly right off the bat.  The good news is, they ain't dead yet.

There is definitely still room. Gotta make sure it fills up though. Would rather have to get an extra bus then not have enough.

The title is ingenious! Love it!

Just saw the highlights of last night's game. Lehner was fantastic! Hopefully becomes somewhat of a fulltime goalie down in the A next season.

Im Really hoping this trip happens. I know that we will need a minimum amount of people to sign up for us to actually go. Im sure you wont give us #'s, but are we half, 3/4, 1/4 full? Just so I can have an idea..

Imagine all us Sens fans drinking and partying on the bus to Bingo, then when we pull up, we will have our own tailgate party, all of us sitting together in the stands in our Sens gear, cheering on our boys!

Sure it may sound like a long trip (5 hrs each way, same day traveling), but when will you do this again? Will be an awesome experience, I guarantee it!

But on this Puckhog -- Senschirp pool, can you change selections after each round? or are you one and done.

I don`t know about you guys, but seeing our B Sens win down there in the playoffs give me such an optimistic feeling about next year, and it makes me appreciate Brian`s rebuild that much more. Glad we signed him.

The optimism that the Sens are so much better than a bunch of other teams is nice but it's pretty foolhardy. All of the young players on Colorado, Edmonton, and the Islanders are going to improve. Those three teams basically had OHL goaltenders for a large part of this past season.

Like it or not Ottawa has one legitimate top six forward and his name is Spezza. It's unclear how much Alfie will be able to play. Foligno and Regin have yet to show they're anything more than third line players. Yes we have Greening, Condra, Butler, and Da Costa. However lets be honest they've got work to do if they're going to establish themselves as legit consistent top six forwards. The games aren't going to be soft like they were down the stretch.

Please tell me 5 teams you think the Sens are better and justify it since you think it's so wrong to suggest we won't be that competitive next year. All of those teams will improve at the draft and over the summer too.

We can scream Cowen and Rundblad all we want but you've got to understand it's going to be a process for those guys to figure out the game at the NHL level. They'll make plenty of mistakes just like Karlsson did and still is. I think they'll be great players but it's going to take time.

In the meantime Ottawa easily has the 2nd weakest top nine forward group in the entire NHL. Dispute it if you want but other than Florida our forward group is very weak comparatively. We also have no clue how these young kids will hold up versus the rigours of a full NHL season.

The only way Ottawa even gets a sniff at the 8th seed is if multiple players (Foligno, Regin, Butler) break out and Anderson stands on his head for 70+ games. Possible but highly unlikely.

Have to agree with this. On paper, in terms of acceptable top 6 talent, the Sens are weak, BUT if the players who are expected to have good/better seasons [Alfie, Bulter, Michalek, UFA] DO indeed perform, the team will be much better.

As you've said, I completely agree that if the team makes the playoffs, guys like Foligno and especially Regin need to score more. I still believe in Regin though, his skill is amazing.

Also people have to be aware that our draft pick most likely will not play next season.
Quote

0 #28 Sandy 2011-04-28 15:18
I for one really don't want the Sens to go after a UFA forward for next season. (of course they need a goalie) And going the trade route will cost draft picks or young players.. which I don't want to see either. If you are going to give away picks... use them to move up the Nashville pick in the draft.

The UFA's this offseason aren't the best.. BUT in 2012 they are much better & there will be a new CBA (providing there is no strike/lockout) . That's when the time is right to take advantage of some teams that could be in real trouble with the cap -- especially, if there are new rules regarding trying to circumvent the cap with these long contracts.

Let the young guys play next season to really see what you have -- after all the Sens won't be Cup contenders or even playoff contenders next season.
They really have nothing to lose.

Sandy

He already said that he wants to go after a UFA. Whether you think the Sens are a playoff team or not, it doesn't matter, because management does. They are a business. They're not in it only to be mediocre, or 'barely pass by'. Every organization in the NHL, NBA, EPL, NFL, CFL etc. wants to make the playoffs in their respective leaugues. Murray isn't saying to himself "Oh, I don't think we're a playoff contender, so I'm only going to carry a bunch of guys that that will give the fans a decent show." NO! Bryan Murray is a General Manager of a professional sports franchise, that was JUST RESIGNED to do his BEST JOB in turning this team around! Of course he's going to try and produce the best team he can!

He believes the team can make the playoffs next season, and as a fan, so do I.

And you don't have to do trades that involve picks or players. And if the trades do indeed involve picks, if it's a 4th, 5th and beyond for a guy that may be worth it, it isn't that bad. Murray isn't stupid enough to trade a first round pick unless it is really worth it, don't worry.

0 #32 jasonontheoldsenschirp 2011-04-28 15:48
This is a business, where individuals get paid millions of dollars to do their job. Of course, when a team underachieves, it is considered a loss. The team has a lot to lose. You don't own a business where you pay your employees millions upon millions of dollars, and at the end of a disappointing fiscal year say, "Oh, we had nothing to lose."

The team has every intention of producing a roster next season that THEY think will take them to the playoffs and be successful, whether you like it or not.

This team is in a re-build.. that's what management says it is. I would think they realize this team is not a cup contender -- and yes it may compete for a playoff spot.

But to pick up a UFA just to fill a hole.. has gotten this team in trouble in the past.

I know Murray said the next UFA will be under 30.. but what good ones are available this year (other than Upshall, Leino, etc) when better are available next year.

They want to know what the young guys can do.. so let them play. Z Smith, Butler, Condra & Greening will fight for spots. We can hope that Alfie can stay healthy, as well as Michalek & Spezza.
I think fitting those young guys in around what they have now... would suffice for next season.
I really enjoyed watching them down the stretch.
I just don't want them making mistakes being in a hurry to get the UFA... like they were with a puck moving defenseman.

0 #34 jasonontheoldsenschirp 2011-04-28 16:19
Respect the point of view.

I for one would love to see, and wait with excitement for Murray's UFA signing. There aren't any blockbuster names, but there are still good players. Jussi Jokinen, Simon Gagne, and Tomas Fleischmann are all good players who I would love to see in Ottawa. It would only help the team.

We need top 6 talent. As much as we've admired Condra and Greening, they are not consistent top 6 talent for an NHL playoff contender.

What fans need to realize is not to be surprised if Condra or Greening don't make this team next season, especially in the top six, which is what we desperately need. With all due respect to them, putting all your stock in two AHL guys who impressed during the latter part of the season and hoping that they can fill top 6 roles is stupid. We need proven scoring talent. Greening and Condra may be good guys to have in the bottom 6 to add depth, but be realistic.

people are talking like we got rid of Superstars to start the rebuld - we got rid of Fisher-Kovalev- Kelly-CAmpoli-R uutu and Elliott(forgett ing anyone from this forgettable bunch). We went and got a goalie - signed another free age
nt college guy who if he works out like Butler will be a big bonus. How are we weaker - were getting Rundblad-Cowen- Silfverburg and 6 picks in the top 66. Only leafs fans like Wee think that this is a mess. If Anderson had been there all year this team was easily top 20 fighting for a spot. Not bottom five. Put on your Leaf Jersey wee.
Quote

0 #36 jasonontheoldsenschirp 2011-04-28 16:41
I just think that if Murray didn't at least test the free agency waters and try to get a top 6 guy that can help this team score goals, he would be criticized of not doing his job.

I've been impressed as much as the next fan at Condra and Greening this year [already consider Butler beside Spezza], but to just keep those guys and hope that what they did last season would continue would look bad on the General Manager.

Greening and Condra, especially Greening, would look really good on a 3rd maybe 4th line role to add depth though. But we need a point producer for Spezza.

And our top pick most likely won't play next season too. There are only a handful of 18 year olds every year that are good enough to make a pro roster right out of Junior. Sending them back down is standard procedure.

I usually dont do this but I registered anyway... *fingers crossed nothing prevent me from going* If ever I cant make it... make sure you keep me in those draws! lol ;)

As a side note, Lehner stopped 43/46 shots.

The thanks actually goes to you for maintaining such a great site, make great write-ups and providing us fans opportunities like this. I havent seen any other blogger who would go out and hold contests, plan trips, etc to support our club - most just hid in the background, collect, and write garbage.

Im looking forward to seeing everyone there supporting our up and coming Sens :)

Good to see Lehner facing a ton of rubber and still winning. We need a horse for the big club!

I just checked my email, and I'm ok with the extra $20.. big deal!

On a side note, Instead of hitting a local pub/bar before the game, does anyone have a portable BBQ we can bring so we can tailgate outside like at NFL games.. Im sure we wont have any shortage of booze.. but I guess each individual will be responsible for their own booze/ice/mix, etc...

Let me/us know!

Saw Gryba skate the other day. Seemed a bit tentative but was doing crossovers and pivots.I don't think he will be ready for this series but could be ready for the next if they make it that far. What happened to Schira?

Sooner do the restaurant... a lot less work with taking own food, etc... but it definitely was a good idea...
