Wednesday Round Up

The reality of a long off season is really beginning to hit home.

Still another two months till the draft and at least a few weeks before the Sens make a move on the club's next head coach. Even in the quite times, there are still a few things we can talk about to pass the time.

  • With last night's elimination of the Buffalo Sabres, another potential head coach target has wrapped up his season. The Sabres have been vocal about bringing back their long time bench boss but if he was to hit the market, I can confirm he would be the Ottawa Senators number one choice. I really doubt the Sens would be alone in their pursuit.
  • Sens prospect Jared Cowen has his Spokane Chiefs in the Western Conference final in the WHL playoffs. The Chiefs are taking on the Portland Winterhawks with the series currently tied up at 1-1. Cowen has been a star for the Chiefs, racking up 11 points in 13 playoff games.
  • David Rundblad and Jakob Silfverberg will both play for Sweden at the World Championships that are just getting underway.
  • Really gotta feel for former- Senator Chris Campoli. His errant pass led to the Game 7 overtime winner last night from Alex Burrows. He had played some pretty good hockey for the Hawks in his brief time there but will unfortunately for Campoli, a majority of Hawks fans will associate him with that mistake.
  • Couple more Game 7's tonight in Pittsburgh and Boston. If the Bruins lose on home ice to the Habs, you would have to think Claude Julien's job could be on the line. Should be another exciting night of playoff hockey.
  • It's a little off topic but the performers for Ottawa Bluesfest were announced last night. Looks like a terrific line up. You can check out the full list of performers here.
  • The Binghamton Senators play Game 1 of their series with the Portland Pirates tonight. The club is hoping to have top scorer Corey Locke back in the line up for tonight's game. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM with all the action available live on the Team1200 and maybe a stream if we're lucky.
  • On the subject of the Binghamton Sens- SensChirp, along with the RSU and UltimateTours has organized a road trip to Bingo for this coming Saturday. $90 gets you a ride there and back, a ticket to the game, and access to some cool Sens prizes. Click here to reserve your spot!

Hi Chirp,

With Chicago's elimination last night, do we know which 2nd round pick from them is coming back to us from the Campoli trade?

I have to agree with Allan. There are only a couple of names I even recognise, let alone any I'd actually pay to see. It's a far cry from last year when I got to see guys like Roger Hodgson, Steve Winwood, and Rush. You know, the legends. Where are the legends this year? No where. It's just a pack of fly-by-night nobodies.

Disappointed. I won't be getting a full pass, that's for sure. Whether I go at all will depend on if anyone good is added later on.

This is a hockey blog - Lets not turn the off season senschirp into a music blog. But in Chirps defense the line up is incredible - if you have any interest in contemporary music.

really felt bad for Campoli when he gave it away last night, although the OT loss can't be blamed on him alone, the Hawks gave up too many chances and needed to score on that PP, it was just a matter of time before the Nucks put one in.

as for Bluesfest, the line-up looks decent, doesn't have as many big names as in recent years but it sure has a lot of variety, I know I will definitely try and see The Hip, and also The Roots, both bands that I've loved for a long time

cheers

I dunno how much you guys know about music, enough to bicker about it I guess.

This years line-up is like this years NHL draft. No knock-you-on-yo ur-ass awesome entries, but an amazing amount of depth.

I saw Rush and Maiden last year, but in this years lineup are closer to 20 intriguing acts, from Satriani, Cheap Trick, The Hip, Infected Mushroom, Frampton, Rise Against, Flaming Lips... the list goes on and on.

Not to mention many of the major major acts sign after this initial announcement, so we'll see who else jumps on board.

Who did you guys expect? Radiohead, U2 and a Beatles Reunion? The only thing missing IMO are a couple of decent metal acts. Slayer, Lamb of God and Arch Enemy please.

Some other players notes

- Wacey Hamilton's Tigers lost last night and are now down 3 games but play tonight to stay alive in the playoffs
- Spezza and the Canadian squad take on 9MM's Czech team this morning
- Shannon and the USA squad take on Austria today
- our future pick (Huberdeau) takes on Lewiston tonight for the sweep

Any credence to Terry Murray leaving the Kings to coach here? His contract over there ends in 2012 but he'd have a great chance to make a trifecta with Bryan and Tim and you know the local media (Don Brennan) is drooling over itself at the chance of hanging out with another Murray...

I'm hoping that Chicago waits until June to make their decision on which pick they give up. Maybe they'll do a bit of wheelin' and dealin', and end up giving their own 2nd away, leaving Ottawa with a better one. I can hope, no? :P

Quoting RUSHRLZ:

Fingers crossed for Peter Gabriel. I know he's touring in June, and it was announced as a 12-date tour, bu there are only 11 shows listed. Only problem is that the tour involves an orchestra, and I don't really see that happening at an outdoor festival. :(

The good news is the international acts (20 or so of them) are still to be announced. I find that those are often the most interesting outside the headliners.

6th: Huberdeau/Strom e + Couturier

16th: Oleksiak + Bartschi/Armia + Biggs (Trade Boston's 2nd + Nashville's 1st for 16th ish)

35th: Z. Phillips/Catena cci/Prince + Jurco

48th: J. Gibson + C. Gibson + Perhonen

as per bluefest lineup:

People who only like 1 kind of music will be dissapointed. Those with eclectic taste will be satisfied. They really spread themselves all over the map this year and catered to every type of music enthusiast. I expect there will be fewer people buying the 2 week pass, but the single show sales will be up from previous years. I think this was the point, considering they make more money on singles shows.

Yeah this exactly... If you like music in general, this lineup is VERY good... For the first time in years, there is a band to see on every single day, although missing the really big bands (and still some to come), whoever said this is a deep lineup is right on, but I guess to each their own.. Plus if less people buy tickets it will be a good thing, I won't feel like a sardine in a can, maybe i'll actually be able to go grab a beer while watching a headliner... LOL

Just a little reminder if you're feeling bad about the Sens. You should feel worse. We've gone through a full 'cycle' and our franchise has come full circle. We're basically back to where we started from, at the low point again. The main difference this time is that we have Spezza.

Yes, I'm posting this to ruin your day. I guess I got sick of the opTimism. We have Spezza and a couple of D. Our forward ranks arenso depleted, we will be signing Sylvain Turgeon to score goals. Guys like Condra, Butler and Greening are good, but don't seem special to me - every team seems to have young guys of at least that quality.

We look worse and worse the more you look at other teams.

Yes we have Spezza, who you build the team around.

No one said this re-build will happen overnight.
They have some good pieces in Condra, Greening & Butler but for pete's sake give them time to get more experience before trashing them.
A lot of teams have good young players but a lot of those teams got them by drafting in the top 10 for quite a few years.
Condra & Greening are 6th & 7th round picks and I believe they are turning out okay.
Rundblad & Cowen give all indication they will be good.
Mark Stone has had an incredible year. Silfverberg & Petersson are up & comers as well.
Don't forget Anderson who could be a difference maker.
If all these young D guys turn out as expected, the Sens will have a very good YOUNG defense in about 3 yrs... once all of them get more experience. They will have speed, agility & with Cowan, Gryba, Blood - size & meanness.

"No one said this re-build will happen overnight. "
Eugene Melnyk seems to think it will be..
if sens start the season with some sort of win streak (2-3games) he will already start talking playoffs/cup contention.
He thinks this rebuild will take 1-2 years. Be serious that's almost impossible, on average it seems that a team takes 3-5 years (but i hope its no more than 3 years obviously since we have a good head start with D and a goalie and 1 true top 6 center)
Quote

0 #40 Sandy 2011-04-27 14:57
@MoeDozer
We don't know how long the rebuild will take... but yes I guess 3 yrs.
It all depends on Anderson and whatever backup goalie they get.
If they can get that really good winger for Spezza then it may go quicker. Of course keeping Michalek & Alfie healthy is more of a key to next season.
Those young guys played really well down the stretch... yeah no pressure -- but they got experience which will only help.
This playoff run for Bingo is helping as well... but was hoping Butler & Greening will have more of an effect but considering they are both closing in on 100 games between pre-season, regular season & playoffs -- that's a lot for college players used to 30 games. (for Condra as well)-- Now that Locke is back.. they are deep in scoring lines.. Greening & Butler may start contributing more.
Looking so forward to Saturday.

Of all those bands here is who I'd try to catch:

A Perfect Circle
Ben Harper
Billy Talent
Cancer Bats
Cheap Trick
Death Cab for Cutie
Death from Above 1979
Dropkick Murphys
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros
Gomez
Infected Mushroom
Ra Ra Riot
Rise Against
Soundgarden
Steve Miller Band
The Black Keys
The Flaming Lips
The Tea Party
Theory of a Deadman
Three Days Grace

Nothing that involves DFA & The Hip can be classified as "bad". You guys are just spoiled you've had such ridiculous acts the last couple of years. I'm definitely going to try to make it at least one day this year, I missed Rush last year =(

As for Campoli, Burrows made a great effort to grab that puck out of the air and get right to the net. If Campoli's getting shit on for that, that's unfortunate.

I'm glad there's been some great hockey the first round, it makes not having my team in it a little easier to bear.

It becomes very clear watching this years Playoffs just how far away the Ottawa Senators are from competing for the Stanley Cup. Look how good a team Vancouver is from top to bottom and yet they're clawing it out in a game seven in the first round. They're in a window of opportunity right now and the Senators will likely need 3-4 years to build up to our next one. I pray the teams management make the right decisions at the draft table.

On paper I'd say the Senators lineup are only really better than Florida and quite marginally at that. Edmonton and Colorado need only sign a half-decent goaltender and let their young players develop and they'll easily pass us this year or next. I know people were pleasantly surprised by the late season run during garbage time but it's going to be a whole different animal next year. I fully expect another bottom five finish and hope Sens fans can form their resolve to be patient while the team rebuilds.

Spezza, Anderson, Karlsson, Rundblad, Petersson, Silverberg, Cowan, Butler, Condra, Gonchar, Phillips, Alfie ,FA, 9MM, Foligno

I can buy a few years for a cup in a rebuild but I can't buy that we will not be contenders next year.

We contended just fine with cup teams the later part of the season and we do not even have all our pieces on the ice yet.

Next years iced team will be better than the team we had a season ago when we were in the playoffs.

Have some faith.

Comparing any rebuild to the laughs is a laugh in itself, they are in an indelible rebuild. (permanent rebuild)

I'll forget connor for a second, but Sandy, you've got me all wrong.

It wasn't a knock on Butler, Greening, Condra (or Dacosta, Winchester, Regin etc for that matter). They're turning out well considering what was expected. I praise their effort and performance.

They're not franchise players though. They're the easiest types of pieces to find on a good team and that's not a slight on any of them.

I'm actually an optimist, but I keep a doses of realist in the mix. I'm excited for Spezza, Rundblad, Karlsson, Cowen, Silfverberg and etc, but we have a tall order to fill.

I'm disappointed because I know it doesn't happen overnight. We need at LEAST one more elite talent and I'd like a complete D man but then aggain so would every GM.

Been a fan since before 1992 when they announced the team. Went on the team plane to their first preseason game in Hartford. Never cheered for any other team since they existed and I'm posting on a nerdy (no offence Chirp, a compliment) Sens blog, but yeah, I must not be a fan! Ha!

Maybe you're to young or you just lack the mental capacity but graph the Sens franchise in your mind. The good news is that we bottomed out last season and we admitted we have a problem.

I think we came just as close to a cup in 2004 (arguably closer, in a way) as 2007 and those can be considered our peaks of the franchise that started with Yashin, Daigle, Alfie, Philips, Redden.

This season, we were bottom feeders and it's the worst I've seen since the start of our franchise. Our step up is that we have Spezza and som D prospects.
Quote

0 #53 Dorkewicz 2011-04-27 18:25
Think of Vancouver, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago & Washington.

We have Spezza where other teams have Malkin/Crosby, Ovechkin/Backst rom/Green/Semin , Toews/Kane/Shar p/Hossa/Keith/S eabrooke, Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Rafalski/Lidstrom/Franzen.

That's our top-level talent 'breakdown'. The rest are works in progress. Don' get me wrong - I like the looks of our D, but we're stil far away.

Boy I'm rant-y today.

The re-build will not be one year we have to be realistic.

Yes they need a really good top 6 forward. They would have to give up draft picks or young players to get that this year & I really don't want that. If Sens want to use draft picks, use them to move up in this draft to get as close to top 10 with that Nashville pick that they can.

Try to draft that top 6 player. You don't know what you have until they play see Alfie who was low round pick..

I think Sens are set in goal. Anderson has a career gaa of .912. Most of that was on a bad Florida team. Lehner has shown flashes of being really good but he is several years away from the NHL.

The D is set (or should be) but it will take several years before they can be NHL experienced. They will filter in as Kuba & Gonchar leave (wish it was this season).

I hope we all realize that there will be some hard nights next season... but also some exciting ones.

@ Sandy

I never said a rebuild would or could take one year.

My main point was aboutthe cycle of our franchise. Think what you will. I say we're a stage above our lowest point as a franchise. I think our last batch of talent was more complete (I'll call it the Redden batch).

The good news is we're still assembling. Having guys like Condra/Butler/G reening perform surprising ly well, but the top level talent is harder to acquire and it's too much to ask those guys to play in he top 6. Maybe one of them at best.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I honestly feel that evey time you respond to my posts, it's either preahin something I already understand, of accusing me of an argument I didn't make (that's for you, Sandy).

Chirp what's your take on Jo Jo Reyes.

Shouldn't even be in the rotation in my opinion.

Dork and Wee + we"ll have Huberdeau on our team in the next couple of years -THE GUY WHO SCORED AGAIN TONIGHT -in the weak Quebec league-looks like a sweep for St-john. You guys know nothing about hockey - Go put your Leaf jerseys on and play with each other. Sens have tons of young talent + with Anderson in nets will battle for a playoff spot easily. We'll have to dump a D-man and a couple of forwards either at the draft or later this summer (OUR DEPTH IS GOOD).

Any idea why Erik Karlsson is not playing for Sweden at the World Championships?
He was the highest scoring D in the tourney last year.

More excited to see Rundblad and Silfverberg to be honest.

We already know what Kid Karlsson kan do. Can't wait to see JS!

If Huberdeau is available at 6, they will take him. If for no other reason then all the other forwards are gone. I don't think he will be available at 6. I think it will be between Strome and Couturier.

A Perfect Circle is on the bill??? HECK YEA! THAT to me is pretty awesome. I wish it could have been TOOL instead but if you like TOOL you will like APC.

Black Keys? Great band and great album!
Death From Above 1979? Pretty awesome if you ask me considering they broke up a couple years ago and have now gotten back together.

Joe Satriani?

I agree on this, but it's either him or Cecil, and Cecil gave up 11 (charged for 10) runs in 4 and a third with Vegas in a 17-3 loss. Could try Brad Mills

BM might just surprise a few and send an offer sheet someone's way, or acquire some salary that a team needs to dump,,, since we have a ton of cap I wouldn't rule it out. I'm not saying he'll steal Parise, spend to the cap, or that were're going to win the cup. But if Anderson plays like he did, Rundblad/Cowen on the way (especially Rundblad!!!), a potential UFA, and with Spezza looking better than ever I'm confident we can maybe sneak in and maybe make a little noise. It's an 82 game season.

Ladd - Spezza

Pffttt tsk tsk BM, had many chances at it, wouldn't have broken the bank to acquire him. An absolute steal at 2.35 mill

He is however an RFA himself!!!! but the Thrashers have the spare cash to match ANY number we could give him in an offer sheet. I seriously doubt they will let their captain go.

Here's to hoping he doesn't want to play in Atlanta!!!

Or Murray is watching Ladd and Spezz and they continue to light it up and he calls former Sens gm Mr Dudley

Atlanta: Michalek, Wiercioch, 2nd (2011) 2 (2012)

Ottawa: Ladd, Bogosian : ) (got to sign them)

Or something to that effect that lands us Bogosian and Ladd. I'm not greedy though, I'd definitely be very content with just Ladd, Bogosian would be a Bogobonus!

@Runblandsson

Don't like that trade, nor would Atlanta tarde their Captain. We don't need anymore Dmen right now.

Everyone forgets that MM9 is still pretty young. Give this guy a couple healthy seasons and he is gonna turn some heads.

Yeah right. He's like "New contract? 6M per year? No, thanks. I'll wait for a call from Senators, will sign for 2.35"
