  • Another Playoff Moment

Something I learned at a young age, is that if you approach playoffs with the "Cup or bust" mentality, you'll completely miss the real beauty of this magical time of year.

Playoffs are all about those "moments". Those where were you when, kind of moments. The ones that stick with you for days, weeks, even years to come. And as Ottawa Senators fans, we have been pretty spoiled the last couple of seasons.

Sens Close out Road Trip in Florida

The Sens are in Florida tonight in what will be a game that goes a long way towards determining where both teams finishes at the end of the season. Ottawa currently trails the Panthers by just two points, with both teams having played the same number of games.

Craig Anderson gets the start in goal against his former team.

All the buzz around the Senators today remains focused on the newest addition in Stephane Da Costa. He is expected to make his debut in a Senators uniform on Saturday night against the Leafs.

Meanwhile, the Sens play an important game in Sunrise tonight.A quick look at the bottom five shows exactly why this is a crucial game.

Florida 77 29 36 12 70
NY Islanders 77 29 36 12 70
Ottawa 77 29 38 10 68
Colorado 75 28 39 8 64
Edmonton 76 23 42 11 57

No line up changes are expected for the Sens in this one meaning we can expect the same forward combinations up front.

Greening-Spezza-Butler/Michalek-Shannon-Condra/Foligno-Winchester-Neil/Svatos-Smith-Lessard

After McElhinney gave up four in Tampa the other night, Clouston will go back to Anderson against the Panthers. The Panthers will go with their back up in Scott Clemmensen.

Puck drops at 7:38 PM.

More good news on Rundblad: today was game 6 of Skellefteå AIK - Luleå HF (Skellefteå AIK is Rundblad's team) Skellefteå AIK won the game 4-3 meaning they are headed to the finals. game 1 april 5th vs Färjestad BK. other good news on him, Rundblad is tied for 3rd in the SEL playoffs in scoring. he has 3g 5a (8 points) the leading scorer Joakim Lindström (winger on Skellefteå) and Rickard Wallin and Chris Abbott are leading the league with 10 points.
Adam Larsson (team mate of Rundblad and sometimes his D-partner) is apparently the top defensive Dman in the SEL playoffs this year.

Maybe if the Sens end up 5th - they will package someone with that 5th round pick to move up... that's if one of those teams goes for it.

I think it was JABS, that gave a link to some of the Sens prospects.

Ben Blood & Michael (I think) Sdao -- are really big mean SOB defensemen. It will be one more year before we see Blood and a couple after than before we see Sdao... soon Ottawa will have a lot of potentially really good D to chose from.
After all Kuba is gone next season one way or the other. Gonchar the year after that. That then leaves 2 more yrs of Phillips to lead these young guys.

Lee & Carkner will also possibly be out in 2 yrs... if not before.

How long has it been that Ottawa has had a stable of good young players to chose from. It was definitely a long time coming.

It will be exciting times ahead. When is it October? Not that I want to wish the summer away.. but it's like a 'kid' waiting for Christmas.

Is it just me, or has Kuba been playing decent the past month and a half. Like seriously. This is coming from the biggest absolute number one Filip Kuba hater during the year.

He's honestly played better. Haven't seen any notable giveaways, pathetic backchecking, and soft hit play over the past month and a half.

Does this raise his stock for an off season move, or do we keep him? He still has ability, no?

Yeah, Kuba has been good. Watching a team like Florida really puts things in perspective. There is no reason for the Sens not to play as bad as them other than talent. Both teams have a lot of youth. Anderson hasn't been necessary in this game at all. It is the rest of the team that is winning it (sorry Sensarmy).

I think the Da Costa signing today eliminates any hope of bringing in an outside UFA this off season.

Greening/Spezza/Butler
Michalek/Da Costa/Alfreddson
Foligno/Regin/Condra
Smith/Winchester/Neil

I don't see room for anyone really and we have prob 3/4 players coming into camp hoping to make the team.

I don't know what to think of Greening on the top line, but I put him there because I think him, Spezza, Butler have shown some chemistry, but I def think he's more of a 3rd liner at this time with a 2nd line ceiling.

I see them as two diff players based on what I've seen from Regin and the scouting reports on Da Costa. Regin is your dangler, finesse player and Da Costa is a play maker.

Johne

As much as I have been impressed with Condra and Greening, I'm going to go out on a limb and say they do not make the roster next year. I still believe that Murray indeed DOES want to land a FA in the off season.

Also, dependent on Da Costa's little tryout for the latter part of this year and training camp, there's a good possibility he could be in the A next season.

Personally, I'd like to see BB16 on the roster next year. IMO, he has the best natural goal scoring ability. Doesn't work as hard or is as physical as Greening, but is more of a natural scorer. It's really hard to tell.

Plus, Silfverberg is a guy who may see some NHL time as well, depending on his play in the AHL too, which is where he most likely will be next year.

Sigh, too many good young kids ... :)
Quote

0 #54 Johne 2011-03-31 20:19
@jason

I think Greening might need a little more time in the AHL but I've yet to see anything lacking in Condra's game, maybe his speed, but he hasn't missed a beat in transitioning from the AHL to NHL.

I fully expect Da Costa to make the club next year, but we do have enough kids on 2way contracts that if Murray had a target UFA to land, he could easily do it.

That being said, I don't think there is room for Shannon next year unless you're pushing one or more of those kids to the AHL. I'm all for watching Condra or Greening over Shannon.
Quote

0 #55 Timic 2011-03-31 20:21
And then there's Stone. Who knows what he does next year. Shannon's not on your list I noticed.

Greening is interesting. i was thinking that what the team needs is someone like Greening only with better hands. So I was wondering who we could draft. He is always in the places he needs to be to get goals. He just goes for it all the time too and has that speed. But tonight, he seems pretty skilled to me! You never know.

The end of this season will remain interesting. Training camp will be very competitive. And next year I think there will be a lot of traffic between Ottawa and Binghamton as this gets sorted out.

0 #56 jasonontheoldsenschirp 2011-03-31 20:25
Fair enough johne. i cant wait to see who impresses over who during the off season.

all of greening, condra, butler, silfverberg [supposedly], da costa have very good chances of cracking the roster. i know youve always admired condra.

the cookie really crumbles as this season wines down and training camp.

the only edge i see greening over the other guys is his size and work ethic. he will give the team 110% every night. you only get that type of effort from east coast kids it seems ;)

other than that, i really hope he doesnt turn into a grinder. he has scoring ability and it would be a shame

@Timic

I think Greening is THAT guy in another year.

I hope there is no hesitancy next season for whoever our GM is to bounce players that aren't producing down to Bingo to give whoever is producing a chance. I think that has been a long standing problem in Ottawa, a status quo. We should have a roster in the NHL and AHL next season that are hungry every night.

What will make things even more interesting is if Clouston is gone (and I think that he will be), how do these players respond under a different coach?

Things will be very interesting come camp. There's a big log jam on defense and their might be one at forward. Not sure how I feel about Greening on the top line next season I think he's more of a good 3/4th liner with the ability to fill in like Foligno. Regin is still in the mix as well along with Condra, Butler and Da Costa. Condra is a 3rd liner along with Foligno all that is to be determined is who centers them Smith or Regin. If Da Costa can step right in great if not spending the year in bingo and getting a call-up like Butler won't hurt him any either. Hopefully Butler can keep building chemisty, Regin and Michalek can get back to being good Left wingers that they were. Either way how this team shapes up should be very interesting.

@Johne, I don't think Anderson would have signed with Ottawa had they not traded for him first. And he would have gone for more money in the summer, not less. That was the genious of the Anderson/Elliot trade IMO. Also they wouldn't have been worse than Edmonton. So my take is that they would have had a shittier goalie and RNH.
