Tampa Bay is a strong team and you had to know they would be hungry for a win against an Ottawa team that has given them trouble recently.
Since the NHL trade deadline, there has been much written and talked about when it comes to the improved play of the Sens. The improvement has been most dramatic on the penalty kill. Ottawa has now killed off 76 of the last 79 opposition power plays, including all four against the Lightning tonight.
Also a positive in this one was the play of Spezza. Scored the Sens first goal of the night and picked up an assist on Michalek's shorthanded goal late in the third period. Also thought Erik Karlsson looked excellent again in over 25 minutes of ice time.
Wanted to thank everyone that took the time to play along in today's contest. The winner will be notified via email after I have a chance to go through the entries. Remember if more than one person has both the exact score and GWG correct, the winner will be determined by a random draw.
I know that late empty-netter by Stamkos broke some hearts!
Another pair of tickets in the Wiser's Suite on the line tomorrow!
Here is how the bottom five look after tonight's action. The Oilers are in action later tonight.
| NY Islanders | 76 | 29 | 35 | 12 | 70 | ||||||||||
| Florida | 77 | 29 | 36 | 12 | 70 | ||||||||||
| Ottawa | 77 | 29 | 38 | 10 | 68 | ||||||||||
| Colorado | 75 | 28 | 39 | 8 | 64 | ||||||||||
| Edmonton | 75 | 23 | 41 | 11 | 57 |
Very impressive. Looked through the emails and it would appear that four people had the exact score and the GWG correct.
On to the draw. Winner will be notified via email. If you don't win, be sure to check back tomorrow for another chance !
Stephane Da Costa had a face to face meeting with Minnesota today. Other teams possibly as well. Decision likely Wed or Thurs I'm told
Yeah that's the problem and it's a big IF but IF he could be healthy and not too expensive I'd love him on our team, the guy's a good hockey player when he's able to play
Ok, I can appreciate that... I guess I'm just really excited about giving our up and comers a chance to shine. Mind you, the kids would still get a chance if Gagne couldn't stay healthy.
Sure hope so! Going to be in Toronto for the Jays home opener this weekend. Would love to have my Sens jersey on in a bar in TO when Ottawa officially ends the Leafs season.
Just an FYI - he was born in Paris, France....
I haven't followed this news, could anyone fill me on his qualities and what he could bring to the club?
Hey Chirp, David Rundblad won the award of the best defenseman in Sweden ! good job by him
Saw that! Can't wait to see that kid in Ottawa next season.
Just hope his body can hold up hitting like that. Volchenkov is a unique player in the sense that he's had very few injuries for the style he plays.
He would play this season. And then be given every chance to make the team out of camp next year.
Yeah I know but I'll wait and see cause I don't think Rundblad will be able to hit like that at the NHL level
So everyone is offering the same contract, just a matter of who can convince him that he will play the most with a club.
I'll admit I dont know much about him either? what type of player is he? is he regarded as being a 3rd line player or a legit top 6 player? We need a 2nd line C, do you think he could fill that position better than RNH? to who do you compare his ceiling to?
At 5-foot-11, 180-pounds, Da Costa isn’t overly big, but he more than makes up for it with his hockey smarts, vision, and pure goal scoring ability. He is a great skater, very elusive, has outstanding puckhandling ability, a good shot, and is a brilliant playmaker. The NHL quickly came knocking after his electric debut, scoring 5 goals in his first home game with Merrimack, but the youngster has opted to play at least one more year with the Warriors program.
Disappointing if he ends up in Minny.
Offence intended - that was the dumbest post I've seen all day. There's absolutely no reason for you to think it "boils down to" who is the more affable GM. Even if the offers are the same, there are a million other reason to pick a team/city... why on earth are you convinced it boils down to "GM personality"? He could like Fletcher more and still sign in Ottawa (or vice versa) because he likes the city better.
Moreover, it's not like the players even see the GM too often. Gm directs the franchise, but a coach interacts with and affects players much more.
Anyway, glad you clearly have a line inside DaCosta's head to know what he's thinking and how it "boils down".
Lets say you two job offers, both offer the same pay/benifits, you're going to go with the job that you like the interviewer more. Personality goes a long way and if you don't think it does, you must have none - offense intended.
I agree to some extent, there are plenty of good college ufa signings that work out great, but I'd rather be more optimistic than pessimistic. Especially with the year we've had and the players we've lost.
Quebec french is looked down on in France as an uneducated slang version of their language, not really a great selling point.
Hopefully he sees that Ottawa is poised to be in a great position for the prime of his career and that it is a high quality organization to be a part of.
On another note what is going on with Winchester ... he's looking like more Cody Bass than Chris Kelly these days.
So Da Costa is a bigot? Pretty big generalization of the people of France right there.
Quoting JABSmilez:
Likely playing hurt. That seems to be the stock answer when people are playing poorly in Ottawa.
Bigot or no bigot, it is an accurate statement that Quebec French is regarded in Europe as a different language that Parisian French. The fact that Ottawa is attached to Quebec is not likely to be a deciding factor in this young man's decision.
I honestly can't see the difference between the two situations.
Tax laws are quite different in the US though, so that salary translates to more actual money in the US than it does in Canada.
I'm hoping he'll sign in Ottawa too, but he is just a prospect, so I won't be disappointed if he doesn't UNLESS he goes to MIN and lights it up.
Well there is quite a difference in thinking languages are "different" vs an "uneducated slang version that's looked down upon"
I will agree though that language will have no bearing whatsoever to him choosing which team he will go to.. He wouldn't have went and played for an American college if language was an issue...
So Da Costa is a bigot? Pretty big generalization of the people of France right there.
Not at all what I said. Quebec French is just not as much of a point of attraction to France french speakers as it was being made out to be above. But yes, I lived in France several years and they are not fans of the Quebec french as a whole.
Apparently he skated with Da Costa last summer.
Ottawa has a lot of college kids in their lineup that are being given a fair chance.
A lot more space is available in Ottawa's lineup next season than Minnesota's... but will he look at what team is closer to succeeding?
if success is a factor, why is Florida even mentioned? I cant think of any team thats further from success.
Its mentioned and in the race because its Florida!!! Sunny beaches, babes and clubs!!
Ottawa has no nightlife and is boring as hell. Minny is probably the front runner as its also a great place to be in, St.Paul is magnificient!
Parisiens are indignant about the irreverent french spoken everywhere outside of Paris.
The fact that there are two languages/cultu res that border in the area should appeal to a European-born player.
Just saying, it can't hurt...
At least on this board and in this situation, it really is irrelevant.
If someone here can read his mind or if he actually said the french thing mattered at any point in any interview then fine but neither of those things are happening so why argue over ridiculous speculation.
Sorry Ottawa does have a night life -- it's not that the saidewalks are rolled up at night here...
I agree
I love the marketplace, not exactly sure when people talk about lack of nightlife, do you need a choice of 30 clubs to go to? Most people past the age of 21 stop clubbing and the bars in Ottawa I find to be pretty nice.
Just saying there isnt much to do for a single guy between 18-25. Once you hit 2-3 bars in Ottawa, you pretty much seen them all. Also we dont have the "finer" attractions hockey players tend to visit.
But im sure he'll decide on what team is more competitive and thats the Wild.
Not sure what you mean? That sort of what the comment section is right? Also have the forum and a Twitter and Facebook account. SensChirp is everywhere haha
Thanks for your patience.
I think what that poster means is realtime comments without having to refresh.
belong to another forum I frequent and we added a chat feature only to have the traffic in the forum etc. take a huge hit
Live blog for games etc is a cool idea but I think the persistent chat should be left out.
It also means that on days like today, when I'm a little late getting a post up, the discussion can carry on without me.
Any update on Gonchar?
If for some reason its serious and he's forced to retire, would Ottawa still be on the hook for his salary or can we put him on LTIR for the rest of his contract?
•When a player aged 35 or older signs a multi-year contract, his average salary is counted against the team's salary cap during every year of the contract, even if the player retires before the contract is up.
Ya, I read that too, I was just hoping there was a way around it if the retirement was injury related (insurance pays the contract, no cap hit- in a perfect world)
That's correct but I believe you can get around it with LTIR. It would require league sanctioned docs exam, of course. Correct me nicely if I' wrong but I think LTIR comes off cap. Just off the top of my head
New Jersey has used LTIR (with Mogilny I think) in the past to reduce the salary cap impact of a 35+ contract for a player who's career ended "early" with injury. The downside is that they still had to pay him while on LTIR.
As cap won't be our problem for the next bit, I would think the Sens would be inclined to let such a player retire, taking the cap hit, but saving on real money.
Almost ... LTIR doesn't come off the cap ... but you are permitted to overspend because of players on LTIR.

I don't think Ottawa is boring myself, but when people level the charge, they have a point. Think of Ottawa as the opposite of a Miami or NYC. It's relatively small.
I don't mind the market, you can have a good time there, but ask a newly-rich, young, horny NHL player where he'd rather blow a shitload of $ on a night out and Ottawa is nowhere near the top of the list.
Like the idea of realtime comments without refreshing.
Still would love to see the latest article in full as the homepage, not to mention an entry by this imaginary Yost character ;D
If the newly-rich, young, horny NHL player's primary concern is blowing a shitload of $ on a night out ... the Sens should probably be thankful that that kind of player doesn't want to be in Ottawa. I'd rather see professionals playing for the Sens ... not party animals.
I always hear that Minnesota, Florida and Ottawa are all very likely.
I thought that was implicit in what I said...
Just pointing out... some players sign based on a city, other sign based on a team. Usually youth want to live in a 'fun' city - that doesn't mean they're irresponsible or don't want to win. Players have to have a very specific set of desires to come to Ottawa and those desires likely don't include a vibrant-at-all- hours city. This all seems pretty commonsense to me.
I don't think any fan would argue that they want the next Emery-type problem on their hands.
Saw that. Sens have made their pitch. Now just waiting for his decision.
Ottawa appears to be frontrunner for Merrimack U's Stephane Da Costa but #Isles being "considered" http://tinyurl.com/5tnmale
Forgive me if this is a dumb question but if we sign de costa, would it be a 2 way deal like Butler got or a 1 way like we gave Winchester? I am pretty sure both guys were signed in similar situations to de costa's.
Orr we end up signing him and he plays against Florida and scores a hat trick ;) haha its nice tondream
that would really rub it in
oh yeah and of course we lose to FLA cause he's not there yet
