Sens Recall O'Brien, Benoit

The Ottawa Senators announced this morning that they have recalled Jim O'Brien and Andre Benoit from Binghamton of the AHL.

Yesterday the Sens demoted Derek Smith and Ryan Potulny so you knew call ups were coming. Both O'Brien and Benoit are expected to be in the line up against Pittsburgh tonight.

Game day post coming in a little bit.

O'brien i assume to play a two way forward position much like mike fisher. I haven't seen much offense from O'brien. so he seems to be a perfect fit for a winchester-smit h-o'brien.... or a smith-o'brien-neil

we are stocked with third line players!

nothing againts Benoit but we should have seen someone else called up!

I would assume the Benoit call up is more of a "Dont deplete the Bingo roster." call-up situation.

Yea it would have been nice to see Wiercioch or Gryba get a shot but Benoit did a nice job when he was up here last time.

He has been one of, if not the best defenceman in Bingo this season.

I hope Obrien can figure out his game at an nhl level. He hasn't done much with the big club all year. He's ripping it up in bingo but this might be his last shot till training camp to show what he can do.

the exact reason they should leave him down there lol

then again with our defensive log jam situation for next season, we really don't want to have a in depth look at any D until Kuba, Carkner and possibly Lee are gone.

Benoit is awesome, I'd love to keep this guy around, but given our depth at D it's not very likely. Love everything about his skating and passing skills. His defensive game is what puts him into the awesome category. Love seeing an offensive guy take the body and sacrifice his body to block shots.

@Chirp

whats the status on the grey edit boxes going away? driving me nuts man lol.

Surprised to see Potulny wasnt given a chance on a top line with Butler and Spezz. This is my issue with coach-Clue. He seems to shy away from playing top-6-type players on top6 lines. Of course you cant get Potulny going on line 4 with 7 mins per game!!!! Same kind of thing with Shannon! Im not saying theyre top6 caliber, but theyre far more suited for an offense type of game than a bottom 6 checking game. We're set for our bottom 6 (we have tons of 'those' players: Neil, Smith, Winchester, etc etc etc).
Anyways, looking forward to the end of the year and the draft!

Go sens go! (and by that, I mean work your a$$es off, play hard, and keep losing!!!!)

Potulny is not an NHL calibre player and will be allowed to become a FA after the season.

Loosing campoli for this return looks worse and worse. I wonder what we get with the 2nd rounder?

Really? Team had to make room for the two rookies next year.

Remember that the trade was the the 2nd, Potulny was just a throw-in.

I haven't seen Benoit play but hiw stats look impressive. Weircoch's do not (I do like Gryba however)....thi s guy is older and should be given a shot (if not just for the paycheque he and his family deserve ala Carkner who was a career AHLer). Maybe he can play himself into a contract with another team (we have a few D-men)

Rundblad and his team (SAIK) are down 3-0 in the SEL playoffs. He might be available earlier than expected.

I think Lee/Benoit are every bit as capable as Campoli, a 2nd round pick was a way better return than I was expecting and I'm a huge Campoli fan.

My bad, SAIK are down 2-1, they won last game.

For those interested you can follow HV71 (Petersson) vs AIK at 19:00 today their time.

I think some are disappointed with the Campoli return for two reasons (personally I think it's a good return).

1) We remember that we essentially gave away a 1st rounder to get him.

2) He's playing on a decent team and is therefore looking pretty good.

Even though I liked Campoli and would have liked him to stay, the fact is that he was always likely to move. He has skills and a decent contract. The players I would rather move, Gonchar and Kuba have only one or none of those things. Our blueline has to change, we have to find a way for Cowen and Rundblad to see serious time next year and there is the possibility of fitting in one or two more bodies in the year or two following that.

With Phillips resigned we had to move at least one person out, unfortunately that was Campoli. I still think we see at least one more body moved off the blueline before the start of next season.

I hope someone pulls a Happy Gilmour and tries to stab Kovalev with their skate blade (it was a record because he was the first to try it)

Anybody know how we are getting away with so many callups? Are they all "emergency" callups? Do they have something to do with us having so many injured players?

If the Sens did not want to deplete the Bingo lineup why bring up Benoit? He is one of their best defenseman?
Bingo is only 1 pt inside the playoffs right now.
Unless both players get sent to Bingo tomorrow for their game.

0 #36 aligator 2011-03-15 13:37
I am sure that they will. The reason for rotating the call ups, apart from looking at different players, is so that the same guys are not always asked to play the extra games.

I really like Benoit and Derek Smith. Two more reasons the Phillips re-signing was a mistake. Even at equal money I'd rather have one of the Bingo guys in the lineup. Add in the fact that Phillips makes more than triple the money we'd have to pay Smith or Benoit and I stand by my contention that Bryan Murray is most definitely not a genius.

I'm so glad you're still posting. Way too many people taking themselves way too seriously. Some really good new posters but we could stand to lose a few of the old ones. That skate blade solution sounds promising.

Murray's only bad move this year at the TD was signing Phillips, other than that, he did what any team in a rebuild should be doing, I wouldn't call him a genius, but he's taking us down the right path....

0 #41 UnbeLeafer 2011-03-15 16:03
I don't get these call ups. Why aren't they bringing up guys who could use a little NHL exposure like Gryba, Wiercioch, Hoffman, etc, instead of career AHL'ers like Andy Benoit ? (no offience to Andre). They strip Bingo, who are in a tight playoff race, of key players to bring them to Ottawa for meaningless play out the string games. Lets see the future at SBP and the present in Bingo. Clouston should know it's too late to save his job and stop trying to improve his record at the expense of the future (and our draft position).

It might look that way but Murray flat out said he wasn't keeping him around after the trade because of the defense logjam..so really anything in return was a bonus let alone a 2nd

I'd like to se Gryba in a game or two but for some reason he isn't getting a chance. I'm sure he realizes that Murray will give his picks/signings first preference. He will be an non compensation RFA at the end of next year. We would love to have him come back to Boston. We love him here!
