  • Welcome to the Canadian Tire Centre

The Ottawa Senators have called a press conference for 10:00 AM this morning where it is expected they’ll announce a new partner and a name for the building once known as Scotiabank Place.

And while the reports have yet to be “confirmed”, some good detective work by a couple SensChirp readers leads us to believe the new sponsor is Canadian Tire and the building will be renamed The Canadian Tire Centre.  Plenty of reaction to the new name around these parts yesterday but the reality is it’s a good Canadian company now associated with the Ottawa Senators brand.

Desperate Sabres Top Senators

Coming into the game tonight, the Buffalo Sabres sat in a precarious position, holding down the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, with Carolina and Toronto both nipping at their heels.

It was a game they had to win and tonight they played like a desperate hockey team.

Bit of a surprise starter for the Sabres as they opted to go with Jhonas Enroth over Ryan Miller. Apparently Lindy Ruff had planned to go with Enroth before the weekend started but after a loss against the Leafs last night, many thought Miller would get the nod.

If you're wondering why there was so much scoring tonight, it almost certainly had something to do with me only needing an under to win my Proline.

The Senators were sloppy defensively in this game and the Sabres made them pay for it.  Anderson was chased after four goals on 17 shots but Curtis McElhinney didn't really fare much better. Ottawa just made too many mistakes in their own end.

Jason Spezza single-handedly kept the Senators in the game. He was far and away the best player on the ice for Ottawa and racked up four points, including a pair of goals. He registered five shots on goal and was 64% on the draws.

Despite missing significant time due to injury, Spezza is now just one point back of Erik Karlsson for the team lead in points.

Tonight's loss prevents the Sens from passing the Avs in the standings and is a punch in the gut to the Leafs playoff chances. Important to find the positives this time of year.

Loved the outcome of the game tonight, only wish Spezza could of swung the hatty. This was a game that helped us in the draft and hurt the leafs.

Goal / Assist / Diving Penalty = a Ken Linesman hat trick for King Karlsson

Spezza is showing he can carry this team. This is a great sign for the sens moving forward. A lot of positives to take from this game.

Spezza played great - he'll be a great influence on this young team in the future. Great to see the boys score a few goals tonight too. But especially happy not to pass the Avs in the standings.

RNH playing on Sportsnet right now. Showing why he's rated so highly. I think he's easily got the highest pure skill ceiling of any forward in the draft. Skates better than any of the other big four I've watched as well. If I'm Ottawa I'd take this kid for his skating alone. He's going to be scary when he fills out that frame.

Watching on PVR delay. He is so shifty and always seems to be in the right place on the ice.

At first I read that as "He is so shitty"

Nugent-Hopkins actually looks a little bit fatigued at times but is still noticeable every time he's on the ice. Playing his third game in as many nights.

Just scored to get his team back in the hockey game. Left all alone out front, made a quick move to the back hand and put it under the bar.

15 points in his last five games.

Welcome back to earth boys!

Sorry about the outcome but things just didn't go our way today, with the passing of a former buffalo sabre Rick Martin. The Hockey gods seemed to give the sabres wings as they were able walk away with a convincing victory.

The sabres were the better team tonight. Fair enough.

Wow, 4 points for Spezz. 2007 roster or not he can still light it up. The guy is clearly a beast. He has my vote for captain whenever Alfie hangs them up. This is his team moving forward in rebuilding. Period.

Good game. We are tired for sure. Its getting to the end of the season, we have had quite a few players moving back and forth between Bingo and the big club and it shows.
I do love Karlsson but I really want Spezza to end up at the top of our stats for the year. Goals and points.

On Clouston staying: Ok, I'm cool with that. As long as we can replace both his assistant coaches.

At least the sens aren't just turning over and taking it.. They're giving some of these teams a run for their money and trying to play spoiler leading up to the playoffs..

I cant believe how much of a nose dive the Avs have taken since the all star break.. we may end up with the 3rd overall..

Having missed the prospects game, today is my first decent look at Nugent-Hopkins. I like what I see. I see him as high risk, high reward but I think I'd take him ahead of landseskog even though Hopkins might be a year or two further away. My inclination is to draft for the highest ceiling, not the safest pick.

Karlsson has been very impressive the last three games. Playing with scary confidence and speed. A one man breakout. Next year could be awesome for him. As for the draft go for the highest ceiling possible. I do not care if our first pick plays next year.

Loved Spezza. Phillips sucked though, for the most part, he has played well of late.

Very impressed with RNH but I don't think Sens can get him without winning the lottery. I think he is separating himself from the pack as consensus #1.

yup Phillips was pretty god awful. certainly glad we were able to retain him instead of trading for high picks and prospects.

Agree. Letting the pick develop saves free agency years and allows that player to excell in junior, play for the world team (hopefully), and have some success on his junior team rather than struggle against men on a weak Sens team. This should be a 2-3 year plan.

Ya I want RNH. Don't need larsson already loaded with defensive depth. Landedskog is I believe the second option to RNH as I see more potential and skill in Ryan. If Nashville falls a little more than strome would be a nice pick at around 8-10. If that pick happens with strome gone, what about Matt puempel he seems to have some flash. Last years chl rookie of the year

I'd be surprised if Edmonton doesn't take larsson or landeskog. They have no absolute defensive prospects other than tuebert. And already have hall to score the goals need a defensive forward like landeskog. So ya I'd be surprised to see Edmonton take RNH we need to draft before Colorado tho. Come on Elliot-shutouts for the rest of the season!

Hey Chirp,
Regular reader here.
Love the new site and layout - you do great work.

One suggestion: I wish there were more than 10 comments per page, but if not, when I click the next page (the 2 or 3 or 4 at the bottom of the ten comments), it should take me to the top of the next 10 comments rather than leave me at the bottom.

In other words, after reading comment #10 and clicking the next page number, I should see #11 rather than #20.

All in all though, great work.

Great game tonight for Spez, for Leafs haters, and for the draft.

1. Edmonton - RNH
2. Colorado - Larsson
3. Ottawa - Landeskog

That's how I see it going down unless we actually start losing a bunch of games. Colorado might even pick first overall in which case I still think they choose Larsson. They've got Stastny-Duchene down the middle as their 1-2 punch for the next decade so I doubt they'd choose RNH #1.

I agree with Justin, more than 10 comments per page would be better for me, I think on the site it was 100 per page?

Anderson is bound to lose some, we don't want him to steal the game every night "THIS YEAR", then we'd have to pay him too much.

I missed the first period, so I didn't see all of the goals there, but I thought Phillips played some good hockey from the midway point of the 2nd period onwards that I caught.

I saw one goal where Lee Clearly took who should have been Phillips man and left his own man unattended to score, so lets not go around having a pity fest for Lee. He made his mistakes as well.

Spezza FTW!

I think this team will be a lot more competitive (and quicker) than most people are predicting. I do not see the sens suffering the way FLA, Toronto, and other perenial losers. This team will be in pretty good shape next year...who would have thought that a few weeks ago.
Go Sens

Trying to come up with a way to give two tickets away for tomorrow's game. What if we had a contest where the comment with the highest "+" rating wins.

Would that work or is there a loop hole to it that I'm missing?

Spezza is an unreal talent. I can't wait to see him playing consistently with a natural goal scorer again. I don't think we have anyone in the system who has the skills to play with him, but i hope in the next two years or so, we can grab someone to play with him via trades or FA. This years draft seems like a long shot to nab anyone that could walk in to the top line spot alongside spezza. But man, can spezza ever play.

Why isn't anybody talking about drafting Couturier? In my mind they need to take the player with the best chance of either being an elite scoring winger for Spezza or a legit 2nd line centre. From people's assessments I've read, I am understanding that Landeskog is NHL ready now, but may not have that elite scorer level of upside. My max-out as a 2nd liner. In my mind that means you draft RNH or Couturier.
