  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Game Day- Sens Open Season in Winnipeg

After more than 260 days without Ottawa Senators hockey, the day has finally arrived.

The Sens open up their season in Winnipeg this afternoon in a game that will help officially raise the curtain on the 2013 National Hockey League season. The Ottawa/Winnipeg contest is one of 13 games on the schedule on opening day.

There were some calls for Robin Lehner to get the nod in this one but Paul MacLean has to go with his number one guy. Anderson was one of the primary reasons this team made the playoffs last year and he deserves to get the start on opening day.

After a week of training camp, no real surprises in the Senators line up. Mike Hoffman impressed in camp but his two way contract has him in Binghamton for now. Kaspars Daugavins is the 13th forward and Mark Borowiecki is the 7th defenceman.

The Senators will not skate this morning in Winnipeg so here is how Paul MacLean's line up is expected to look based on yesterday's practice.

Michalek-Spezza-Silfverberg
Latendresse-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Smith-Neil
Regin-O'Brien-Condra.

Methot-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar
Wiercioch-Benoit

In the depths of the lockout, it was hard to imagine this day. NHL hockey has finally returned.

GO SENS GO!

I read "BONK" as our 3rd line center. I nearly fell off the can.

I won't hold it against you.

I guess we're all a little jumpy today.

Nice to see the first Game Day Post !!

Is BONK a new nickname for Zach Smith ??

With Craig Anderson starting in net, the backup must be Lehner who must be pleased to stick around with the Ottawa team, rather than in Binghamton!!

Bishop must be getting nervous as our 3rd galie ??

Would love to see Senators completely shutout the Jets !!

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Glad to see that coach Mac decided to start Anderson. That is why he is so popular as a coach. The veteran gets to start the season but he still needs to earn it for his next start. Nothing is handed to any of them, unlike previous coaches.

A couple of months back I said that who cares if they ever came back. Well glad they finally are and excited that the Sens are back. Hopefully they can get off to a great start.

I gotta say though, aside from Karlsson and Methot, those d pairings look terrifying!

Also, hats off to Luke Richardson this morning! BSens without their top 3 of their dmen aside from Gryba, top 2 forwards and the AHL's best goaltender(s) and they still continue to roll, claiming first place in the entire AHL with a win over none other than the Toronto Marlies last night! Unreal!

What a team! What an organization!!!

I agree re: the defense after Karlsson & Methot...

Let's hope the chemistry between Benoit & Wiercioch make them okay today. They just can't overplay... that will be the issue.

Hoping for a Sens win. Anderson has to outplay Pavelec and we are good to go.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I couldn't be more proud of this team. It isn't easy to go into an away arena and pull off a result like that. Some standout positives were:

Weircioch
Karlsson
Regin
O'brien
Alfie

Standout Poor performances are:
Benoit
Spezza
Latendresse

It is still so early in the season that it's hard for me to criticize this game at all.. very impressive display. Bring on Monday night! They moved my 2nd level season tickets to first level for the first 2 home games! Thanks Ottawa :)

Awesome,

4-1 Ottawa! where did I see that before?

Please stop the Anderson crap, he is bonafide, and played brilliantly

Methot, all I thought an more, this guy has it all.

Bottom 6 may be the best bottom 6 in the league, they will be a lot of fun to watch,

Now for the one negative... Latendresse looks way to slow to play with Alfie and Turris... Regin ends up there very soon...

And...Chomp Chomp Chomp, thats the sound of me eating my words on Philips and Gonchar, they played very well,

Go Sens Go!!!

So Methot played exactly as I expected him too, hence the reason why I picked my handle. I had a feeling his defensive awareness mixed with EK's speed and offense would be a good 1, 2, punch. We are only 1 game in but I don't think I stand alone when I say GREAT signing BM!

And didn't the Sens 'since the 2nd period' look just like last years team?

exactly my thought. regin looked incredibly fast today. I wouldnt give up on latendresse being on the 2nd line just yet though It will take him a couple of games to build some chemistry on that line. he just needs to keep working on just leaving the puck for alfie and turris and just staying open.

We have always had penalty issues, hopefully we learn that these new rules are even more "soft" quickly, cant afford being on the PK half the game.

Nice - but shouldn't Anderson have got the second assist, or do goalies only get assists if they play it with their stick?

Now for the one negative... Latendresse looks way to slow to play with Alfie and Turris... Regin ends up there very soon...

exactly my thought. regin looked incredibly fast today.

Yes Moe, well put back into perspective, I do agree that Lats needs more time, but Regin to me is the perfect mix to Alfie and Turris, Lats could not keep up to those two tonight,

But again that bottom six will cause havoc to the opposition.

Neil Smith Greening have loads of sandpaper, they will punish,

Regin, OB, Condra, can fly and will create many many chance.

Now the Laffs and the Havnots... what a letdown :)

The Sens traded for Methot.

Watching the bruins/rangers game...

Those two teams are massive and at times surprisingly fast. I see them as the two top teams in the east. Will be very tough to beat

I'm still however very bothered by the way Torts coaches his team. When they're in the defensive zone, it's as if they think they're all goalies. Just diving all over the place. Such ugly hockey

First star - Anderson... Close second was Karlsson.

Anderson held them in there in the first period. Winnipeg controlled most of the play in the early going.

Sens finally got to their game in the 3rd... and hence the 4-1.

I was one of those concerned about Anderson... but after that first goal -- he shut them down. He played a good game.

Nice to get a win.

Next up the Panthers... who are rolling tonight.. 4-0 over Carolina in the first period.

B-Sens losing 2-1 near the end of the 2nd period. Cheverie in net...

Yup...I complained about andy after a weak first...he ended it like his old self, solid.

I loved the way Foligno was a workhorse on this team and was upset to see him go. After watching Methot play, I am 100% behind that trade. A perfect partner for our star D, just plays a consistant shutdown, smart game. Love our top pairing.

Benoit/Wiercioch although made the odd rookie mistakes played a great game and I think will provide great offense.

Only 1st game, so I'm not judging harshly, by a little dissapointed with Latendresse today. Seemed out of sync.

Great game... Started off slow, but they finished strong. Let's hope the fast start rolls into Monday's game. Methot was all I thought he would be too! Solid, strong, and will be reliable in his end. As the season goes on, I think him + Karl will be scary.

Watching the Florida game now too. Interesting to see Kuba and Kovalev. Wonder how much of a factor they will be this year down there... Looks like they're lighting it up on the Canes tonight. Hmm... Give it a game or two before Kovalev decides to disappear though.

YEAH - no comparison at all.
Brown is probably the WORST play by play guy in pro hockey.

You enjoy his mindless blather about Alex Ovechkin's dog or
his favourite restaurants in New Jersey instead of
describing the the game while it's being played ?

B-sens lost today, but Zibanejad scored a goal for the second straight game in the third. Interestingly, he had 8 shots on net today, so he must have been very hungry. I just hope he does not become a puck hog, because his line mates Stone and Da Costa only had 0 and 1 shot on net.

In the early moments of the start of the game, the Jets were clearly outplaying the Ottawa Senators. The one-timer rocket
shot, just whizzed by Anderson's left side into top corner.

That goal simply woke up Anderson, who played with complete
confidence the rest of the game.

Number 3 Marc Methot, is a great fit with Erik Karlsson, and
will only get better with every game !!

No doubt that Craig Anderson starts on Monday vs Panthers,
with Lehner as the backup !!

Great effort by the whole team to start the season with
a very big win !!

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Hard to take too much from the games last night...

A lot of teams got shelled. Jagr had 4 points, Kovalev had 3 points, Huberdeau had 3 points etc.

Lovin having hockey back.

Agreed!

Give it a week for teams to find their groove, and we'll start seeing the real picture. I still think the Bruins, Rangers, Pens, and Flyers are the East teams to beat. Everyone else, us included, is a question mark...

I gotta say I'm a big fan of NHL GameCentre Live. I'm back in school this year and therefore can't afford cable but I absolutely needed hockey. So for $50 I get every game for the season. It's pretty sweet.

The best part about it is that you can choose which teams broadcast you want to watch so essentially choose which broadcaster you want to listen to. A very nice luxury to have. Also sweet how it's all in HD. After the game you also get full 5 min highlights of every game.

Highly reccommend! Even if you already have cable

Huberdeau belongs in the big leagues and Kovalchuk as much as he may suck, makes their PP very very dangerous.

We can't take any penalties tomorrow. They have way too much skill
