  • Game Day- Pittsburgh @ Ottawa Game 4

Every game the Sens play from here on out could appropriately be labelled the biggest game of their season.

The Ottawa Senators look to build off an electrifying win on Sunday night as they play Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. After a two day break, the Senators will be looking to use a raucous crowd at Scotiabank Place to draw even before heading back to Pittsburgh for Game 5 on Friday night.

Ceci Signs Entry Level Deal

While questions continue to swirl around the current CBA negotiations, the Ottawa Senators took care of some business of their own earlier this afternoon.

The Sens have announced the signing of first round pick and Ottawa 67's star, Cody Ceci.  The defenceman was Ottawa's 15th overall selection in the 2012 Entry Draft and is expected to at least push for a job at training camp.

Ceci's contract is a three year, entry level deal.

Ceci was a member of Team Canada at the recent Canada/Russia challenge but never seemed to find his game in that tournament. Important not to put too much stock in a mid-summer series like that one but you can be sure Ceci will be looking to improve on that performance if he has a chance to attend the Sens main camp this fall.

Obviously the Sens were thrilled to grab Ceci on Draft Day and really think he can be an important player for the team down the road.

Both Bryan and Tim Murray talked about the possibility of him sticking with the big club as early as this season but with guys like Borowiecki and Wiercioch both pushing for spots, Ceci is going to have a fantastic camp.

Ceci played in that Canada/Russia series okay in the 1 game in Russia... and not so well in Canada...

Outside of the goaltending of Subban... it wasn't very good.

Ceci will be with the 67's for the next couple of seasons. He is not yet NHL ready.. he is in size.. but still needs to improve his skills.

except that he is 18 and not 19 until december, teams can have a specific amount of 21 year olds.. cowen(and tons of others) played 5 ohl seasons. why cant ceci..?

the only reason many players dont stick arround for a 5th season is because their NHL team usually feels that the player is ready for the AHL/ECHL/NHL or they are too old.

Congratulations go to Cody Ceci, who yesterday signed an entry level 3 year contract for $925,000 per season!

This is a similar situation to the NY Islanders, who signed Deis Potvin in 1973, as their First Round pick and #1 draft,
who played for the Ottawa 67's from age 14 t0 19 !

Potvin was the 1st NHL defenceman to attain over 1,ooo points ( 1052 in 1060 games ). Just shy of 1 PPG !!

Should Ceci not crack the Senators lineup, he could still play another 2 years with the 67's !!

Too bad he shoots right and not left. Karlsson also shoots right, and it's not easy to play on wrong side !!

Could be paired with Jared Cowen who shoots left !!

Cowen didn't play in the WHL as a 21 year old. his first season was barely a season. He had just turned 15 and played 6 games at the end of the year and 6 playoff games.

allowing top prospects to play as overagers in Junior serves little purpose IMO. I hope Ceci doesn't play an extra year of Junior, would be a very bad sign. It would mean he couldn't handle a role in a better league.

Agrre with you, that Ceci could play in OHL, but should play in Binghamton, if he does not crack the Senators'roster this coming season.

Question is, did Senators sign him to a 2 way, or one way contract ?? No mention of this in today's Ottawa Citizen !!

There are a few question marks for health: Latendresse, Regin are replaceable by our rookies however (Silfver, Zbad, Stone, etc...). Michalek I think has proven that his leg is better, so random injuries asside, I think Alfie is the only one that has a question mark and I honestly don't think he'd play out the extra years if he wasn't feeling great about himself.

The bigger question mark that I have is: How will Karlsson handle the pressure of now being a star player. It's one thing to take teams by surprise like he did last year, it's another to be productive while the entire other team has their eye on you.

I think Karlsson has the talent to handle himself while being covered by other teams, but I definitively think that this will be a year where he will be slightly less productive due to other teams paying more attention to him.

Except he's too young to play AHL.

He will play ONE and only ONE more year in the OHL. Then likely play at least one in the AHL before he's NHL ready. Possibly longer. And that's okay of course - D take longer to develop in most cases.

Spezzerman is right as well that overagers are in the OHL are rarely top prospects - though some can just be late bloomers. The Senators have NEVER had a prospect play in junior when they were eligible for the AHL or ECHL. Though that could change this year with so many players on that Bingo roster if there's a lockout - Prince and Pageua may be sent back to junior just to make room.

And ALL entry-level contracts are two-way (unless that changes in the new CBA of course, which is unlikely).

I for one am not worried about EK this year and the other teams watching him. I think it was pretty apparent last year, that all the surprise of his great season was pretty clear mid way through. Especially when he hit that pointless stretch. Teams were paying attention. But the simple fact is you can't always watch him, you have to focus on what's going on elsewhere too. And eventually, he managed to find his way. I think he will continue to be offensive this year and teams will only be able to contain what they managed to contain at the end of last year. It's playoffs where it becomes a different ball game and I think THAT is where he'll need to revise his game play IMO.

I actually think it's great if teams focus on Karlsson. He's good enough that with some work he'll figure out a way to contribute despite the focus. And he'll be an even better player for it.

Even though he was amazing last year, I think he can still be much better. And the best way for that to happen is for him to be challenged constantly.

Bring it on.

I agree with the Hax thinking , and also believe he will be much better !!

Last year he played with Kuba, and this coming season he will probably be partnered with Methot. It will take some adjustment, at start of the season, but the chemistry should not take more than a few games to start clicking .

If he stays healthy, he will get more than the 78 points he got last season !!

http://capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=2356

3 years, cap hit $1.4M per year. Of course, his first year will more than likely slide unless Murray has him play a few games in Bingo after the OHL season ends to burn a year off.

Umm the CHL-NHL agreement expires on Sept 15. So teams can send their under 20 CHL players tothe AHL teams instead.

The D would be dirty

Cowen- Benoit
Weircioch- Borocop
Gryba- Ceci
Blood/ Cleasson.

I don't think Ceci should play in the AHL next season. He should play a leadership/heav y minute role for the 67's next year. lead that team, gain some confidence back, ideally play his way back on to the WJ roster (i think he is on the outside looking in as of now).

IMO The sens should be more interested in giving someone like CLaesson that NA ice time to adapt.

So they're not going to sign a new deal? After Sept 15th can any drafted player go play in the AHL? Or can Nate McKinnon decide to go play in the AHL as an undrafted player?

I would assume that (unless there have been announcements to the contrary) they will renew that deal before it expires. Or maybe as soon as the new CBA is in place since that hopefully takes precedence.

Thats the thing though, nobody is talking about this CHL agreement. It would definitly expire if there is no new CBA by the 15th.

On the forwards. I could seem them sending Noesen but keeping Puempel in the OHL with his new team on the Rangers, he has barely played any games these past 2 seasons. Kind of like Cowen a couple of years back.

But we're in the opposite situation - we have too many players as-is. There's been talk of the Sens sending Prince and Pageau back to junior as over-agers just to make room in Bingo - even though they've never done that before. A lockout makes matter worse as you then have Cowen, Silfverberg and Zibanejad in Bingo instead of possibly on the NHL roster.

Will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

i believe any player can go play in the AHL if there is no CBA. but even though there is no CBA i still believe the AHL teams are still tied to their NHL teams. so i think you will see all the players on two way contracts in the NHL head down to the AHL team before you see any non drafted/non signed players get called up to the AHL

not to mention the majority of junior teams wouldnt be too upset if there is a lock out because it means all their overagers who would be more than likely in the AHL this year have a good chance to be sent back to junior because of AHL teams being full with guys on contracts who would normally play in the NHL.

for example given the contracts in Bingo and the sens wanting silfverberg and zibanejad in NA this year if there isnt enough room stone could be sent back to Brandon for another year. i am sure brandon would be just fine with that

The NHL-CHL agreement supposedly expired back in July. There are conflicting reports and the NHL hasn't confirmed, but it appears the CHL would expect the AHL to honor the agreement even during a lockout.

The owners pay the players too much money. That's the owners talking.

So since the negotiations started.. Parise & Suter each signed 98M dollar contracts. Weber was offer sheeted for 110M.. and now reported the Buffalo Sabres offered Shane Doan a 4 yr 30M contract.. that's 7.5M a year.

Now what's wrong in the NHL? Who is to blame this time around?

I partially agree with that. I think 6-10 will be very close this year and any of those 5 teams could flip flop. My big problem with Buffalo is their lack of top end Cs. Trading Roy for Ott still leaves them without a true #1C, and considering many of the best teams build through middle and D, I worry this shortage will become very apparent this year.

When you compare Tampa, Carolina and Buffalo to one another, Tampa has the offense down the middle and should have better goaltending, but is weak on D. Carolina is really strong down the middle now and has a really good G, but not so great on D. And Buffalo has one of the best goalies, a pretty solid D corps, but very little down the middle on offense.

It's glaring weaknesses like those that could even lead to these teams under performing if the Islanders or Florida or even Winnipeg had a more consistent all around game. This is also why I have Ottawa ahead of them as I feel overall our team is better balanced, which normally wins out in the long run.

I'm not sure what people see in Montreal. I'd be interested to hear which pieces you think will help lead them to a significant improvement? A few years ago when they made those crazy playoff runs they were over performing pretty badly, I think last year was a bit more of a return to the skill they actually have on their roster, but that's just my opinion.

I completely agree about NJ, it will all be up to how much Henrique can improve and if Elias still has enough in the tank for another quality season.

Well Montreal looks like world beaters when they play the Sens... It may take them a little while to get used to the new coach... but they have speed... and speed is the new NHL... plus they have Price..

IMO, buffalo is better than they showed last year. Barring another complete collapse, they are a playoff team.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tampa sign Carle and Salo recently? Along with Hedman and Brewer, they aren't that weak on D

They aren't "that" weak, but it's still a pretty weak group overall. Salo is injured most of the time, and I find Carle a bit overrated along with Brewer. I think Hedman is pretty good and should hopefully start contributing more on the offensive side, but again, it's still weaker than what most playoff teams have, in my opinion.

Speed has been around for a very long time, but a lot of their speed is small and 1 dimensional as well. Really without Price this team would be last place almost every year, he's really the only piece that gives them a chance right now.

No rush for Ceci. Kid's gonna make an impact at 19 if not, then at 20. A Canadian, offensive type, right handed shooting defenseman leaves me with the thought that he could be comparable to I don't know, close to Doughty perhaps?

That might be a tad optimistic but you never know with D-men. I wouldn't want to put any limits on how good he might ultimately be, but if he can at least be part of a "big 3" someday led by Karlsson and anchored by Cowen then we're in amazing shape.

Beaulieu and Tinordi are great prospects and Subban should have a better year. I think last year was a bit of an avalanche effect when things started to go wrong. Similarly with Clouston, a new coach may make the difference. I'm not saying they will be contenders this year for the cup, but I think they can compete for a playoff spot.

I can respect that, we're all just sharing our opinions on what we think will happen. I just don't think they have the skill nor the overall experience to come close to the playoffs this year. I just hope we get a season so we can find out :)

In the event of a lockout - say half season - which teams, if any, do you think would benefit from it and which teams, if any, do you think would suffer from it?

Montréal has a better defense then us and better goalie forward I can say we're maybe slight over then. In sens fan. But don't judge what happen last year. There gonna make the playoffs

Mtl defense

Subban-gorges
Emelin-markov
Kaberle-Diaz

Sens defense

Karlsson-method
Cowen-gonchar
Phillips-Lundin

Come on pretty obvious

I take it you're a habs fan? I'd take the sens 6 over the habs 6 any day. It's not even close, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to be obvious the other way. I guess agree to disagree, just come find me at the end of the year so we can review.

Insiderr is saying E Kane has requested a trade officially now, and MTL has an offer around Subban.

Man I seriously freaking hope that Murray is working that phone bloody hard as hell if this has any reality to it. I would give just about anything to get Kane on Turris' wing, imagine if they had chemistry how amazing they could be for years to come.

I don't know, bud. As manly as Evander Kane is, the price would eventually come back and haunt us for the years to come. Not to mention, the draft class of 2013 is going to have a similar class to 2011 as far as CHL players to go in the 1st round is concerned. Imagine giving up a few of those 1st rounders for the next few years, plus perhaps the 2nd rounders as well.

I think the teams who are on the brink of bringing up young talent earlier than anticipated are the ones that will benefit most. Those players will get te quality AHL or even CHL experience they need. I put the Sens on that list. We will be fielding a team with a lot of younger players and some of those potential rookies will flourish.
