  • Another Playoff Moment

Something I learned at a young age, is that if you approach playoffs with the "Cup or bust" mentality, you'll completely miss the real beauty of this magical time of year.

Playoffs are all about those "moments". Those where were you when, kind of moments. The ones that stick with you for days, weeks, even years to come. And as Ottawa Senators fans, we have been pretty spoiled the last couple of seasons.

Waiting on Schultz

While the rest of the league awaits the opening of free agency tomorrow at noon, the Sens find themselves in pursuit of one of the most sought after players on the market.

The Ottawa Senators have been courting NCAA free agent Justin Schultz and today it sounds as though they may in fact be one of the finalists.  The Edmonton Oilers are the other team believed to be in the thick of things.

Some conversations I have had this morning suggest the Sens may be the favourites in this process but nobody knows for certain at this point.  The Canucks, Leafs, Rangers and Wild have also been linked to the much talked about Justin Schultz sweepstakes.

I'm going to be away from the computer and on the golf course this afternoon but I'll do my best to post updates in the comment section and on Twitter.

Brace yourselves, Sens fans. The NHL's silly season is in full swing!

Ottawa and edm made the most sense. They Are two teams which have the fewest one way deals.

Ottawa is closer to winning now though. I still think edm gets him though

There's one thing worrying me this off season. What if Kanopka was the invisible glue that held last year's team together? Was he the so-called "intangible" that made that group a team? Murray seems to be banking on it having been MacLean but I wonder if there was more to it than that....

Not sure how he could sign with edm if he grew up a fan of the Canucks. It's easier to just go to a neutral team away from the rivalry.

Kanopka was NOT the glue that held the team together last year. He barely played 10min a game. Yes he won some key face-offs throughout the year and especially in the playoffs but that's extremely minimal in terms of contributing to ypthe team. A guy like O'Brien can come in and win 40% of his face-offs and would still be just as valuable as Zenon. He was also a leader but common man, a 4th liner can be replaced.

Same goes for Carkner. I agree he was solid. People were scared of him and he was also a good presence in the room. But if he wants over a million AND term...see ya later buddy! A guy who plays half the games should not be paid that much...EVER. If he does get that kind of contract (1-2 mill and 2-3 years) it will be with another team and where he will actually dress every night and the 5th or 6th defenceman because that team is desperate for toughness
Quote

-2 #13 ZachPraiseTheSwedes 2012-06-30 11:54
Say Carkner is actually asking for 2million a year...

Instead of signing him you could have almost 4 players for that amount of money and call them up from Bingo depending on the opponent and the type of player you want for that particular game. Not only do you suddenly have 4 options, you are also giving your young guy minutes.

We are rebuilding people! We can't have our 6 or 7th d-man getting even a million dollars. We need to give our young guys experience. Or else they will never develop into NHLers.

My theory is this - Justin Schultz has already made his choice. It's Ottawa. His agent (or whoever) is only leaking that Edmonton is still in the mix so Justin doesn't look like even more of an a-hole for kicking the Oilers to the curb after they tried to woo him with Gretzky and company. They know his reputation isn't the greatest right now so they may want it to seem like he's really tortured by this tough decision. There's no other reason to hint that the field is narrowed because both teams will have already offered him the rookie max with reasonable performance incentives. He's not trying to play off one against the other for more money. He's trying to smooth the waters after his rocky (and somewhat suspect) entry into the NHL.

I think this guy will actually sign here. How 'bout them apples....

couple more days, I have no doubt BM will land us a nice deal for a top forward and a D.

I expect deals in the fire waiting for July first.

First we will hear the big name or names we landed and then we will hear Alfie is back for a last season.

It could be the Nash deal CBJ are wanting to secure a free agent or two before they commit to our deal.

Could be a few deals dependent on how free agency goes, on our side as well.

BM has to land some big talent or he will have to replace Alfie also, he will need two big names not just one.

Turris has to be a good example to Shultz why Ottawa is his best option, if he can bring it we will play him and we are contending. Oilers can't say that, or even the Leafs for that matter.

I don't know about you guys but I really wanted this Schultz pick up. After all the hype around the Nash trade rumors last week and being one of the few teams in on Schultz, I really needed something to happen.

I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a very quiet day for the Sens. There are few players out there that have any appeal and those players are going to be extremely over paid by teams that are willing and able to spend to the cap.

I hate that the cap ceiling has gone up to 70 million this summer. It gives teams that are already stacked an opportunity to sign more big name players like Parise and Suter, or teams that have been careless with throwing out ridiculous contracts like Toronto or Calgary a chance to get more competitive.

So much for parity in the NHL.

Personally I am happy that we didn't get him. We have Cody Ceci and he is much better. The way the whole thing was handled was not right. He made use of current CBA loop holes to default on Anaheim. He better watch himself when play the Anaheim. I am positive Gretz had a say in this.

Oilers have too many young kids and they will find it hard to keep when all their current contract expires.

Leafs buying out Cody Armstrong might be to add Shane Doan.

They are also kicking whatever to address goalie situation.

We need a solid defenseman to play minutes and also bring physical play. Also time to keep Boro and get him play with Phillips. He need 5/6 defensemen time. He is going to be our future. This is going to be our Year 2 of rebuild.

Adding Nash & and a top 4 D in year 2 will put us contender in the East.

This is going to sound like sour grapes, but I really think Schultz is going to regret his decision. Edmonton was the sexy pick for sure, with the chance for him to be #1 and to play with all those #1 overall picks. But the pressure's going to be immense, he'll have no insulation for mistakes he makes, and the Sens are renowned for their ability to develop young players. IN the long run, I think he just hurt his overall chances at becoming a great d-man.
OH well, time will tell.

And please don't sign #68 tomorrow. I'm sick of aging vets with nothing but reputation left.

If we are going to pay big money, I want Nash. But, I figure he ends up in NYC. Ottawa is good or better than good, because we have been building a "team"! We got rid of the bad "eggs", so to speak, so lets plaese only take in talent that will fit. We have to get to the cap floor, so we know we will have to overpay for somebody. But damn, better not be an egotistical asshat. I have confidence in BM here.

Not sure what happens now. Murray is likely contemplating next move, which is likely a trade of some sort to get top 4D, and T6 forward. But who? That's what we all are dying to know, so we can all sleep at night, comfortable in the knowledge we can all look forward to training camp, and get on with our summer :)

I raise a glass to everyone on here, and wish you all a happy Canada day, EH!! (and to our American friends, Happy Independece day shortly!!)

That old story of the Flyers and Columbus talking about Rick Nash resurfaced Saturday afternoon.

Two sources say the Flyers are in serious discussions with the Blue Jackets to acquire the proven 40-goal winger.

Problem is, do the Flyers have the assets to do the deal without gutting their forward spots? Columbus general manager Scott Howson apparently wants both Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier or one of them with several other players...

I know with the draft and opening of the free agent period, everyone is just itching for some sort of action - anything - please? C'MON MURRAY!

I have to say, I would almost rather Murray do absolutely NOTHING tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the day after that. Why is it that we are looking to find a top 6 forward? I know that is where we are thin up front - at the moment. Instead of signing an aging player like P.A. Parentau for a deal that will pay him $4.5-5mil for upwards of 5 or 6 years, why don't we just leave the roster spot open?

We have plenty of potential top 6 depth waiting in the wings - some of them could be up with the big club as soon as next season. Why should we fill a second line position with the likes of Parenteau or Penner when we could be using that spot - as a rebuilding team - with Silfverberg, MZ, Stone, Petterson, Foligno, Regin, Hoffman, etc. etc. That way we would be able to see who is going to be able to take that step to be an impact player for us, and who is not going to work out.

The only UFA forward (aside from Parise and trading for Ryan) that makes sense to me is Ray Whitney. He would be a tremendous mentor for the young guys to couple with Alfie. And that situation only makes sense to me if none of our younger players are ready to take the reigns - or it would hurt their development - on the second line.

Moral of the story - maybe we should all just take a deep breath instead of crying for us to sign every single player available as a UFA or through trade. Remember, we are still in year 2 of a rebuild. We don't need to blow our load for Rick Nash or Ryan Suter right now.

I fully agree with ChrisT. Our cupboards are overflowing with top prospects and if we sign a big name to fill the role of a top3-6 forward we will never see what these kids have to offer. Itll essentially be like Staal, he was never really able to "spread his wings" because he was always stuck on the 3rd line.

As we say in my country: Let the kids play.

Interesting tidbit from the Silver Seven:

"Think back to December 16th, 2011. What were you doing? Okay, you don't remember. But do you remember the Senators beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4 that night? Or that they did it on the strength of Cowen's one goal and three assists? Or that he did it while playing 28:11, the most of any Senators skater that night? Or that his partner for much of that game was none other than Karlsson?"
----------------

So is it time to just run with Cowen & Karlsson?

Don't forget, we are also losing players to free agency! We need to get to the cap floor. ELC's (rookie contracts) aren't going to get us there. Something has to happen, but what, is anybody's guess at the moment.

I get what youre saying. But its not really fair to our aging veteran senators to just do nothing.
How do you think Spezza/alfie/ph illips feel if we just say "keep it entertaining til we're ready to compwte witj a new team of guys"
How many lifelong senators have to retire cupless ?

We have a goos team with a good shot. Why wait 5 years (yes 5) for players like zibby, silf, stone, and noeaen to be impact guys?

Sign/trade for somebody now. Give spezza a fighting chance. When the prispects are ready we can always make more trades to make room for them.

I agree with this sentiment. go now. we have a stable of rooks, but it is up to BM (and TM+PD) to decide who should be kept, and who we can live with out to make such a plan happen.

That seems almost identical to the 'rebuild' that Bryan Burke has made in Toronto. Or the one started by Darryl Sutter and is being carried on by Feaster in Calgary. Declare the rebuild, then trade picks and young assets for aging players on the decline.

Hmm...and how is that working out? Is it any wonder I would rather see what we have internally?

With all due respect, Ott's situation is nothing like Tor's or Calgary. The latter two teams have no prospects to speak of, and we have too many. If we trade even 3 or 4 of our prospects, we will still have many good ones to count on going forward. Moreover, I would hardly call someone who's 28 "aging" or "on the decline." Most people tend to think that when a player's 28, he's in the very prime of his career.
I understand not wanting to mortgage the future for a 1 year window, but let's not be so afraid of going for it that we mis our chance all together.

If we use the wait and see logic, tell me, who is the #1 centre going to be when we lose Spezza. We don't have one, and I don't buy the argument that we'll draft one in the next 2-3 years, because: A, they don't grow on trees, B, we probably won't finish last and thus won't be able to draft one, and C, even if we did, he wouldn't be in his prime when all of our other prospects hit theirs.

WE have some major pieces right now, let's not lose the opportunity.

We don't know what we have in terms of assets or depth though, that is the point I am trying to make. Anyone of these guys could turn out to be the next Giroux or the next Daigle. Would it not be prudent to see what we have and what holes we need to fill after giving some of these guys a closer look?

Sure we could trade MZ, Foligno and Bishop for Rick Nash (it would likely take a Ceci level prospect or Cowen plus pick as well to get that done, by the way)....but what happens if in 4 years we find out that MZ is a premier power forward in the league, similar to Nash but younger, and that Lehner busts at the NHL level and Bishop turns out to be an elite goaltender.

Once again, we are entering YEAR TWO of a REBUILD. Lets not go too crazy here folks. We need to give some of these prospects a little bit of time to see what kind of holes are filled internally, and then use the redundant players to trade for places where we do have holes in the roster.

I am not a pessimist about this team. In fact I am extremely optimistic - I just don't think throwing away all of the replenishing of the prospect pool that Murray has done, for two roster spots, will buy us a cup.

Look at the LA model. They drafted well, they developed their prospects, they WAITED to see what these prospects became and when the situation became slightly more clear, they parlayed a few of those prospects into the final pieces of a Stanley Cup winning team.

We have to get too cap floor anyways

Nothing wrong with signing Jagr, as long as term and money are reasonable. He showed he can still play in Philly.

Id be all for Jagr in Ottawa and like Releasethelehner said if Jagr can help Turris like he helped Giroux its a win win

Agreed.

Sorry we lost out on Schultz, but at least he stays in the Western Conference.

Re: our need for a veteran Dman and forward. The reason we need them is so that we can develop our prospects properly. Our young kids need to be in situations and play minutes appropriate to their stage of development. What distinguishes young prospects from veterans is almost always confidence and consistency.

Zibby (scoring touch) and Stone (skating) need time in the AHL. Cowan isn't ready yet for top pairing situations and minutes.

So Murray will try to address our needs through trade or FA signings. That's just waaaay better than rushing our prospects and potentially limiting their ceiling.

Murray doesn't need to go crazy. Would be thrilled with Parenteau and Hjalmarsson.

Definitely going to be an interesting day. I can see BM & his team going after a D first in the morning similar to the signing of Gonchar. We will land a decent defenseman, but unsure who BM has in his mind.

Defense is a must and there top quality guys left. I can see many GMs going after Suter, Parise, Bobby Ryan & Nash early on Sundays. We should focus on whom we need and go after them.

First sign Carle or Garrison or trade with Chicago for Hjarlmarsson. Go Parenteau. Once done, then call Howson about Nash and his best offer and nag him every 30 minutes.

It will be an interesting day tomorrow. I'm convinced that Bryan Murray will be able to sign a top six forward and a defenseman. Rumblings again on Twitter that Columbus and Philly are discussing Nash. Apparently Howson is asking for Brayden Schenn or Shawn Couturier in the deal. I can not see that happening. Happy Canada Day and let's get the NHL Free Agency started.

"T time", the problem with Garrison is he's really only known for his offense (his one-timer specifically), the problem is he's a lefty. We need a right handed shot to compliment Karlsson's passing ability on the top power-play unit. Some foolish GM is going to sign this guy to an asinine contract but it sure as hell won't be us. Carle is better than Garrison defensively and has good offensive upside, but again he's a lefty. Hjarlmarsson is a decent option that could someday be a tough as nails shut-down D. In my opinion (and the more I think about it) J-Bo might be our best option. He's an excellent shut down D who can skate like the wind. Might be a perfect partner for Karlsson 5 on 5. For our powerplay, we might be stuck playin a forward on the point, unless Murray can find a right-handed shot somewhere.
