Some conversations I have had this morning suggest the Sens may be the favourites in this process but nobody knows for certain at this point. The Canucks, Leafs, Rangers and Wild have also been linked to the much talked about Justin Schultz sweepstakes.
I'm going to be away from the computer and on the golf course this afternoon but I'll do my best to post updates in the comment section and on Twitter.
Brace yourselves, Sens fans. The NHL's silly season is in full swing!
Sandy - the glass is half empty
Hax - the glass is always full - half air and half water
Tookie19 - there is no glass
miguel - this fine glass needs to sit on a nicer coaster
The Apostle - there's too much lime in that lager
JohnE - the glass was manufactured in Flin Flon before
the War
Snoopy Senior - In my day we drank from tankards
in Valhalla !!!
Canucnik - water bestest taster where pour Lehner haded
Spezzafan19 - we should get the Holy Grail and
the Goblet of Fire
ZipZapRap - Michalik the pedophile has poisoned
the water in the glass
Daybreak Maidenhead - Jeff Glass is my favourite player
Travis Yost - some other blogger said that there
is water in the glass
Julie Robenhymer - I love the glass
Bruce Garrioch - the glass can hold 37 chicken McNuggets
Eklund - the glass will be traded to Edmonton
for a Hemsky tea service
If that post doesn't reach at least +50, I have lost all faith in the readers of this site haha
Ottawa is closer to winning now though. I still think edm gets him though
Brilliant!
So wait, are we getting Hemsky?!?
The Score @theScore
The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman David Musil to an entry-level contract
GOOD JOB !
I'm still laughing at (I'll admit it ) ME
Great post... too funny.
Same goes for Carkner. I agree he was solid. People were scared of him and he was also a good presence in the room. But if he wants over a million AND term...see ya later buddy! A guy who plays half the games should not be paid that much...EVER. If he does get that kind of contract (1-2 mill and 2-3 years) it will be with another team and where he will actually dress every night and the 5th or 6th defenceman because that team is desperate for toughness
Instead of signing him you could have almost 4 players for that amount of money and call them up from Bingo depending on the opponent and the type of player you want for that particular game. Not only do you suddenly have 4 options, you are also giving your young guy minutes.
We are rebuilding people! We can't have our 6 or 7th d-man getting even a million dollars. We need to give our young guys experience. Or else they will never develop into NHLers.
I think this guy will actually sign here. How 'bout them apples....
YES!
I hate that New York is always getting the big names. It would kill me if they somehow get Nash
NHL fans hate to be strung along and they hate losing even more!
Agreed. Everyone will be royally pissed off. I still hope to god we get him. I would love to laugh at the leaf fans. More ammunition is always good.
Bryan Murray will look like such a thug if he is able to pull this off. He made some pretty big moves the past couple years. Schultz and Nash would be nuts!
Hahaha. Oh man. I have to hit Home Depot, I'm sure the news will break while I'm away from the Interweb.
I expect deals in the fire waiting for July first.
First we will hear the big name or names we landed and then we will hear Alfie is back for a last season.
It could be the Nash deal CBJ are wanting to secure a free agent or two before they commit to our deal.
Could be a few deals dependent on how free agency goes, on our side as well.
BM has to land some big talent or he will have to replace Alfie also, he will need two big names not just one.
Turris has to be a good example to Shultz why Ottawa is his best option, if he can bring it we will play him and we are contending. Oilers can't say that, or even the Leafs for that matter.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Hearing NYR are out of running for Justin Schultz. Not going to NYC.
Hope you're shitting rainbows :)
just waiting to hear that TO and Van are out.
As I write this Toronto is OUT.... ha ha ha
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
TOR also out on Justin Schultz.
:)
Oilers and Senators are the 2 final teams
for Justin Schultz. A 3rd team may still have
a shot, told he still hasn’t made a decision.
Could be a mid afternoon decision.
Great news the Leafs are out!!!
So if the Leafs are out.. the Rangers are out... it leaves Vancouver, Edmonton & the Sens...
His hometown, three 1st overall picks, the mighty Sens..
I call 3:00 pm eastern time, on the dot.
*Listens to audience*
"3:01, Bob.
GO SENS GO
Schultz would have been better off playing with the Ducks lmao
I heard he was signing with Anaheim.
Schultz is down to Ottawa and Edmonton right now, James Duthie said he is calling them to let them know right now who he picked answer to come in the next 15 minutes or so on who he signs with
YOUR RIGHT ITS DOWN TO TWO TEAMS ott, AND edm.
HE ALSO SAID IT WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN 15 MINS
im sure its bs it was from an edmonton fan on hfboards saying schultz signed with the jackets but they weren t even on his list,so i doubt its true.
Will believe it when Bob Mackenzie says so.
Yeah I was just making this up. Figured it sounded as crazy as him signing in Columbus.
The last team he calls will be the one he picked.
Why oh why do I have that sick feeling in my stomach that it will be the Oilers.
I hope he signs here but at the same time he sounds like a real douche bag.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
VAN is out on Schultz.
Bada boom bada bing.
...I hope
"@tsnjamesduthie: Too many negative tweets on Schultz. He has handled this like any highly sought after UFA would. We (Twitter, media) created the drama.
announce it already.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RGhSADIGOY
That other Schultz was traded to Edmonton at the deadline for Gilbert
reading that as "We are out according to Kyp" almost gave me my first stroke. I'm just 18.
OMG SAME!
Were we separated at birth?
no, not even close...especia lly with the new 70 mill cap.
without bonuses, we would have room for 3 nashes actually...lol
www.capgeek.com
I dont think a single sens fan would be mad if he accepted that lol
well...I was adopted
Except for that guy who was offering Schultz a handjob the other day on the comment section on Senschirp.
Oh well, that was fun.
and confirmed
i read edmonto got schultz,damn
Edmonton = huge failure
They still wont make the playoffs.
I hope chris neil concusses the shit out of him
That's the spirit! No hard feelings!
But yeah, Shulz will definitely learen how to lose with dignity in Edmonton...
"Edmonton wins everything...ex cept hockey games."
They definitely need D.
I guess the Sens couldn't compete with Gretzky & Coffey.
I guess the Oilers promised him #1 PP and top minutes...
I hear Colby Armstrong will soon be looking for work - interested?
I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a very quiet day for the Sens. There are few players out there that have any appeal and those players are going to be extremely over paid by teams that are willing and able to spend to the cap.
I hate that the cap ceiling has gone up to 70 million this summer. It gives teams that are already stacked an opportunity to sign more big name players like Parise and Suter, or teams that have been careless with throwing out ridiculous contracts like Toronto or Calgary a chance to get more competitive.
So much for parity in the NHL.
Not like they have anyone else to play those minutea
hopefully he's a flop after going elsewhere, he just sucked valuable hours from my life that I'll never regain.
how long can the oilers possibly suck for?
Check
Now here is hoping the Nash sweepstakes is over by tomorrow and again we lose.
Trade for Ryan or Kane/Hjarlmsson
Sign Carle.
Success and thanks for coming out
Oh well. You know what they say about always the bridesmaid... I have a feeling it might be one of those summers!
I would very very happy with Nash or Ryan + Hjarlmsson.
F**k the Kane idea. You know what kind of issues that dummy has been going through? That's the last thing we need in our dressing room, I'd rather bring Emery back.
Oilers have too many young kids and they will find it hard to keep when all their current contract expires.
Upfront Nash will be super.
NHL.com announced the Schultz decision at 3:51 PM ,while SensChirp posted the same news at 3:46 PM,according to Ryan
on an earlier post !
Apparently Schultz will be signing an Entry Level Contract on Sunday !
Maybe... Welcome to being a sports fan
It's not golf.
But i really dont think Ottawa signs anyone tomorrow
They are also kicking whatever to address goalie situation.
We need a solid defenseman to play minutes and also bring physical play. Also time to keep Boro and get him play with Phillips. He need 5/6 defensemen time. He is going to be our future. This is going to be our Year 2 of rebuild.
Adding Nash & and a top 4 D in year 2 will put us contender in the East.
I have the same concerns Sandy. Our defense can't be much worse than it was last year though. As long as we don't bring back Kuba I'll be a happy man.
1.Rick Nash
2.Zach Parise
3.Bobby Ryan
4.Shane Doan
5.PA Parenteau
6.Jiri Hudler
7.Dustin Penner
Tomorrow Murray should look at one of Bryan Allen and Matt Carle and Jason Garrison.
lol no that's being a 5 year old who screams when he doesn't get his toy....not a sports fan
Parenteau would be a good fit with the Senators!
Edmonton, New York or Philly.
Jagr 3years 15million ...2 years 11 million
Jagr could do the same for Turris as he did for Giroux
p a parenteau
book it
LOL
As wild as that is I could see Murray doing that ..Track record speaks for itself
We have to get too cap floor anyways
Senators have been offering their depth forwards around the league. This might trigger something. #Sens Bruce Garrioch @SunGarrioch
Don't be surprised if the Senators make a deal for a defenceman now that Bobby Orr has elected to sign with Edmonton. #Sens
Nothing wrong with signing Jagr, as long as term and money are reasonable. He showed he can still play in Philly.
Id be all for Jagr in Ottawa and like Releasethelehne r said if Jagr can help Turris like he helped Giroux its a win win
Agreed.
i hope the reason we havent added a Dman was because we were waiting for the schultz decision. hope now is the time.
not sure if it was discussed but what do you think about ray whitney? possible 1year deal for average price, the man plays like he is 30 still.
I would expect they would not have been very happen.
Sens need 1 young D and 1 veteran...
So hoping they get a good forward and a vet D tomorrow..
Parise 8 years 64 million and Suter 8 years 56 million.
Let's do it!
OH well, time will tell.
And please don't sign #68 tomorrow. I'm sick of aging vets with nothing but reputation left.
OH well, time will tell.
And please don't sign #68 tomorrow. I'm sick of aging vets with nothing but reputation left.[/quote
[quote name="taxman"]T his is going to sound like sour grapes, but I really think Schultz is going to regret his decision. Edmonton was the sexy pick for sure, with the chance for him to be #1 and to play with all those #1 overall picks. But the pressure's going to be immense, he'll have no insulation for mistakes he makes, and the Sens are renowned for their ability to develop young players. IN the long run, I think he just hurt his overall chances at becoming a great d-man.
OH well, time will tell.
you nailed it.....thinking the exact same thing.
Not sure what happens now. Murray is likely contemplating next move, which is likely a trade of some sort to get top 4D, and T6 forward. But who? That's what we all are dying to know, so we can all sleep at night, comfortable in the knowledge we can all look forward to training camp, and get on with our summer :)
I raise a glass to everyone on here, and wish you all a happy Canada day, EH!! (and to our American friends, Happy Independece day shortly!!)
KJ
Parise
Nash
Doan
Parenteau
Here's hoping BM can land one of them along with a decent top 4 d-man.
Two sources say the Flyers are in serious discussions with the Blue Jackets to acquire the proven 40-goal winger.
Problem is, do the Flyers have the assets to do the deal without gutting their forward spots? Columbus general manager Scott Howson apparently wants both Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier or one of them with several other players...
I have to say, I would almost rather Murray do absolutely NOTHING tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the day after that. Why is it that we are looking to find a top 6 forward? I know that is where we are thin up front - at the moment. Instead of signing an aging player like P.A. Parentau for a deal that will pay him $4.5-5mil for upwards of 5 or 6 years, why don't we just leave the roster spot open?
We have plenty of potential top 6 depth waiting in the wings - some of them could be up with the big club as soon as next season. Why should we fill a second line position with the likes of Parenteau or Penner when we could be using that spot - as a rebuilding team - with Silfverberg, MZ, Stone, Petterson, Foligno, Regin, Hoffman, etc. etc. That way we would be able to see who is going to be able to take that step to be an impact player for us, and who is not going to work out.
The only UFA forward (aside from Parise and trading for Ryan) that makes sense to me is Ray Whitney. He would be a tremendous mentor for the young guys to couple with Alfie. And that situation only makes sense to me if none of our younger players are ready to take the reigns - or it would hurt their development - on the second line.
Moral of the story - maybe we should all just take a deep breath instead of crying for us to sign every single player available as a UFA or through trade. Remember, we are still in year 2 of a rebuild. We don't need to blow our load for Rick Nash or Ryan Suter right now.
As we say in my country: Let the kids play.
"Think back to December 16th, 2011. What were you doing? Okay, you don't remember. But do you remember the Senators beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4 that night? Or that they did it on the strength of Cowen's one goal and three assists? Or that he did it while playing 28:11, the most of any Senators skater that night? Or that his partner for much of that game was none other than Karlsson?"
----------------
So is it time to just run with Cowen & Karlsson?
Don't forget, we are also losing players to free agency! We need to get to the cap floor. ELC's (rookie contracts) aren't going to get us there. Something has to happen, but what, is anybody's guess at the moment.
KJ
I get what youre saying. But its not really fair to our aging veteran senators to just do nothing.
How do you think Spezza/alfie/ph illips feel if we just say "keep it entertaining til we're ready to compwte witj a new team of guys"
How many lifelong senators have to retire cupless ?
We have a goos team with a good shot. Why wait 5 years (yes 5) for players like zibby, silf, stone, and noeaen to be impact guys?
Sign/trade for somebody now. Give spezza a fighting chance. When the prispects are ready we can always make more trades to make room for them.
I agree with this sentiment. go now. we have a stable of rooks, but it is up to BM (and TM+PD) to decide who should be kept, and who we can live with out to make such a plan happen.
KJ
cant forget the karlsson feed to cowen to beat buffalo in OT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o14AnJbPHA
That seems almost identical to the 'rebuild' that Bryan Burke has made in Toronto. Or the one started by Darryl Sutter and is being carried on by Feaster in Calgary. Declare the rebuild, then trade picks and young assets for aging players on the decline.
Hmm...and how is that working out? Is it any wonder I would rather see what we have internally?
Jakob Silfverberg ($0.900m) / Jason Spezza ($7.000m) / Daniel Alfredsson ($4.875m)

Mika Zibanejad ($1.744m) / Nick Foligno ($1.550m) / Mark Stone ($0.873m)

With all due respect, Ott's situation is nothing like Tor's or Calgary. The latter two teams have no prospects to speak of, and we have too many. If we trade even 3 or 4 of our prospects, we will still have many good ones to count on going forward. Moreover, I would hardly call someone who's 28 "aging" or "on the decline." Most people tend to think that when a player's 28, he's in the very prime of his career.
I understand not wanting to mortgage the future for a 1 year window, but let's not be so afraid of going for it that we mis our chance all together.
If we use the wait and see logic, tell me, who is the #1 centre going to be when we lose Spezza. We don't have one, and I don't buy the argument that we'll draft one in the next 2-3 years, because: A, they don't grow on trees, B, we probably won't finish last and thus won't be able to draft one, and C, even if we did, he wouldn't be in his prime when all of our other prospects hit theirs.
WE have some major pieces right now, let's not lose the opportunity.
..... No thanks
maaaybe jagr for a cheaper deal (he played for 3.3 this year ... did he really earn a raise)
My trade/UFA wish list in order
Forwards:
Nash
Parise
Doan
Ryan
P A Parenteau
Hudler
Penner
Tootoo!! Dont really need him but really like him and has a great recovery story.
Defense:
Bouwmeester
Suter (Pipe Dream)
Carle
Hjalmarsson
Garrison
Aucoin
anybody else curious about tootoo's story as i am? watch it here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcCMiCMoGBI
Sure we could trade MZ, Foligno and Bishop for Rick Nash (it would likely take a Ceci level prospect or Cowen plus pick as well to get that done, by the way)....but what happens if in 4 years we find out that MZ is a premier power forward in the league, similar to Nash but younger, and that Lehner busts at the NHL level and Bishop turns out to be an elite goaltender.
Once again, we are entering YEAR TWO of a REBUILD. Lets not go too crazy here folks. We need to give some of these prospects a little bit of time to see what kind of holes are filled internally, and then use the redundant players to trade for places where we do have holes in the roster.
I am not a pessimist about this team. In fact I am extremely optimistic - I just don't think throwing away all of the replenishing of the prospect pool that Murray has done, for two roster spots, will buy us a cup.
Look at the LA model. They drafted well, they developed their prospects, they WAITED to see what these prospects became and when the situation became slightly more clear, they parlayed a few of those prospects into the final pieces of a Stanley Cup winning team.
We are Cap floor team ..So your looking at 10 million too spend tomorrow and we still need to Sign Foligno
Your list is a giant pipe dream...
DISAGREE!
Remeber,we are in year two of a rebuild, people...Does a Jagr really fit into that plan? Yeah, we might take a step back next year with our D situation the way it stands right now, bu toough - REMEMBER where we were and how we were talking last year at this time...
Re: our need for a veteran Dman and forward. The reason we need them is so that we can develop our prospects properly. Our young kids need to be in situations and play minutes appropriate to their stage of development. What distinguishes young prospects from veterans is almost always confidence and consistency.
Zibby (scoring touch) and Stone (skating) need time in the AHL. Cowan isn't ready yet for top pairing situations and minutes.
So Murray will try to address our needs through trade or FA signings. That's just waaaay better than rushing our prospects and potentially limiting their ceiling.
Murray doesn't need to go crazy. Would be thrilled with Parenteau and Hjalmarsson.
If BM manages to somehow walk away with one of those Dman and Parise or a top forward, it will be a great Canada day for me
Think about it...just crowd/muddy the lines even more.
All or nothing...if we don't sign Parenteau I will hold onto my hope thay we are secretly pushing for Ryan
Defense is a must and there top quality guys left. I can see many GMs going after Suter, Parise, Bobby Ryan & Nash early on Sundays. We should focus on whom we need and go after them.
First sign Carle or Garrison or trade with Chicago for Hjarlmarsson. Go Parenteau. Once done, then call Howson about Nash and his best offer and nag him every 30 minutes.
Exactly... I don't see a parenteau signing thrilling me at all either...
Slutina Gretzky ?
No thanks.
Yeah, that makes sense for sure. I'd rather Carle and Hjarlmarsson as well than Garisson .
I just hope BM make some good signings :)
I didnt say anything close to that.
"Internally" we are 5 years drom having 2 fully developped top line wingers to play with SpeZ. By then Spezz is on the decline. Why not get the most out of our best player while hes in his prime?
Your plan is essentially to Rick Nash him and give him no legitimate supporr until.he gets fed up and leaves. Nice
Seee: i can draw up unfounded comparisons too
Didnt say I wanted all of them... just who I would like us to go for... The ones i want the most are at the top of the list...
