Over the past two weeks, it appeared as though the Sens were on a collision course with the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins but that changed thanks to Ottawa's late season slump. And while the Rangers are by no means a pushover, their is a sense among the Sens fan base that the Rangers are a better matchup.
That confidence comes from a strong showing in the season series. Ottawa took three of four from the Rangers, including a couple impressive wins at Madison Square Garden.
We'll have a full breakdown of this series tomorrow afternoon but it seems pretty clear this this best of seven will come down to goaltending. Henrik Lundqvist has had an MVP type season but if Craig Anderson can match him, the Senators may have a shot at upsetting the top seed in the East.
The full schedule for round one will be released today at 1:00 PM. The Sens have a full day off today and will return to the practice ice tomorrow morning.
Happy Easter everyone!
I got my Playoff tix!
I hope everyone else does too
So will Jakob Silfverberg be joining the Sens as many suggested? I really think his recent playoff performance will continue over here and he'll have a hot hand in our charge forward. Looking forward to seeing him in action.
Waiting for the schedule, Go Sens Go!!
I believe !
can hardly wait!
Go Sens!
Sandy - the glass is half empty
Hax- the glass is always full - half air and half water
Tookie19 - there is no glass
miguel - the glass needs to sit on a nicer coaster
Snoopy Senior - In my day we drank out of cups
Canucnik - Water better taste when pour Lehner has
Spezzafan19 - Ottawa should get the Holy Grail and the Goblet of Fire
ZipZapRap - the water has been poisoned and was poured by a pedophile
Daybreak Maidenhead - I once had a love and it was a gas
soon turned out I had a heart of GLASS
McLean will have them ready.... just hope they don't get a little cocky with their regular season record against the Rangers... the playoffs are a completely different season.
It will be interesting to see what series have upsets.. and let's hope the Sens are one of them...
Trust the 'Stache... and we believe.
I'm wondering the same about Jakob Silverberg, I'd love to see him come over after his strong playoffs in Sweden and give our team a much needed offensive boost
I can already see Silverberg Turris Alfie on a line together
I'm torn on which defense to start, Carkner i find him to be a better defensive D then Gilroy but in our last game Gilroy showed significant improvement and impressed me.
For once i can say the Sens are going into the playoffs with some Depth in goaltending haven't been able to say that ever.
I'm curious to see how the players who one the cup in Bingo last year respond to the NHL playoffs, I'm hoping they got the same edge they had last year, If that's the case were definitely in business!
All in all i think it'll be a great series and win or lose who could of imagined the Sens going into the playoffs after just 1 year of a rebuild.
LOL!!!
Enjoyed that. My only added comment would be Miguel would also have to bash Tookie in his comment.
"Brynas starts the Finals on Tuesday; NHL playoffs round one starts Wednesday. I don't think there is much of a chance of Silfverberg being available to help the Sens out in the first round (what with travel and all), but if Ottawa somehow advances, I think he is eligible."
"Elitserien Finals schedule is Tuesday-Thursda y-Saturday-Sund ay then (if necessary) Tuesday-Thursda y-Saturday. So the earliest it could be over is Sunday. Realistically, more like Thursday of the following week, with a parade on Saturday (do they do those over there?) -- he would definitely be able to help in the Conference Finals."
Here's to hoping they come out of the gates with a bang and at least get a split out of MSG.
I'll be there at Game 3 to welcome them back! 45 minutes away from figuring out when that will be, hoping Monday night.
I like others am happy we play NY and not Boston, I am also happy we are not playing the Pens this year first round.
got mine....just praying the games scheduled for Sunday
What if Silfverberg is a difference maker? I know it'd be weird if suddenly, let's say the Panthers or the Flyers brought some prospect from overseas (not AHL) and he started lighting it up..
Just struggling to make my own opinion up, was wondering if anyone else had seen it this way
Personally I would prefer we go with the guys that got us to this point but to my mind it's no different to bringing a guy up from the AHL.
Did you have a problem with the Sens sending players back to the AHL for the Calder Cup run?
Playing Boston would have been very defensive and hard hitting.
If Sens can steal a game, in first 2 in New York, this will be a 7 game series.
If Rangers win first 2 in New York, they will win it in 4 or 5 games.
Believe It !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!
True that, I wasn't sure he was under contract with us.
Though I don't think his name would end up on the Stanley Cup if we went all the way, right?
GOOOO SENS GOOOOOOOOO!!!!! !!!!!!!
No real issue with Binghamton getting NHLers for their cup run, just feels a little different with SEL
As long as it was within the rules it is fair game, if another team had a guy like that and brought him in so be it and all the power to them.
Our success is going to be more how we play and puck luck.
This team has proved that anything is possible and I will continue to expect them to surprise in the playoffs. I think the Rangers are one of the toughest match ups possible, but purely because of Lundqvist. If he is in steal a game mode there is no better goalie in the league, however the speed and toughness the Sens bring should help them get to him.
I'm convinced the complacent team we've seen the last week was just recouping in preparation for the big show! Time for the Smiths, Greenings and Kubas to step it up as this series will come down to the teams' supporting cast.
GO SENS GO!!! Sens in 6
Why dirty? Playing within the rules, and this isn't even a loophole, it's just straight up how the business works. How do you think Nashville feels about Radulov? If it makes you better and gives an increased chance in winning there's nothing dirty about it.
It has been a phenomenal season, even having clinched playoffs and having some so what games at the end has been nice.
Anything is possible 100% agree, we are in the mix and everyones season is reset to 0 (those in playoffs), how we and other teams play here on out is all that matters.
Fresh start
Phillips the way he has played as of late is starting to look like a smart move to have resign him.
I was one that was not thrilled with the resign, but I will be thrilled to be wrong if he can bring it like he can in playoffs.
Gonchar is another I am looking to see step up in playoffs being there is more on the line.

Seems like I'm not the only one antsy to get to see him play.
We all know his situation - any news on the organization's plans for him?
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
VAN: Hughson/Simpson /Oake. OTT: Cole/Galley/Hea ly/Campbell. BOS: Brown/Millen/Pe trillo. NASH: Lee/Weekes.
Hope you live in Ottawa area ..looks like split coverage ..CBC hate for Ottawa lives on lol
shouldn't we get national coverage like any other canadian team would? We could gain fans and our franchise could benefit from merchandise sales... The leafs or habs without a doubt would get national coverage.
Cole and Healy? Fuck right off
Cole is the WORST play by play guy in the business and Healy hates the Sens big time. Listening to the 2 of them talk shit about the Sens all series is going to suck.
For Games 1 & 3 of OTT/BOS series, Senators will have the full network, minus one station (CHEX), which is accessible w/the right package...
There are also streaming options if you'd rather watch the Boston series.
i know alot about boston but not too much about the rangers, i was wondering if the rangers are a TOUGH team?
I know we have smith, carkner, niel, konopka, and foligno but what do you guys think?
are we a tougher team?
well their "big" guys are boyle at 6'7, rupp 6'5(scores too many clutch goals i believe he scored winner in the winter classic and if my memory serves me right, he got the game winner in 03 cup finals), scott 6'8 (i wouldnt worry about scott.. lets just say i rather put carkner on the top 6 role as a forward before putting scott on the ice) and much less physical than those guys a 6'4 anisimov. then on D i dont see anyone physical really. staal was by far the toughest to play against before his concussion, hes softened up a bit since. girardi not so much a tough guy but annoying as hell to try beating on D.
and i guess honourable mention to their captain callahan who i think lead them in hitting. or dubinsky. either way its a pretty physcail team overall but i think its pretty much a tie in this department.
we have a HUGE edge in the speed, they have an edge in the defensive and logically they have the upper hand on goal tending but we have seen what andy is capable of on good nights.
if you compare physical wise with hits, their leading hitters callahan (271 hits), boyle (236), girardi (211), dubinsky(207) and 5 others between 100-150 hits.
which completely overshadows ottawas leaders of neil (271), cowen (217), foligno (196), greening (189), smith (168), phillips 134.
but i dont look at it that way as rangers being physically dominant over us. we are one of the few teams that can stand up and fight back any "intimidating" team. this series really is going to depend on the elevated play of guys like smith and foligno (not including our stars).
what i think we will have a tough time with is their shot blocking ability. mcdonough and girardy both have 180+ Blocked shots. with boyle callahan del zotto at 80-90 as next closest.
we got kuba philly gonchar 115-150.
and finally and what i think wins playoffs is specialy teams. we have a much better power play 11th in league compared to them 23rd, however their PK 5th compared to our 20th.
Agreed. Furthermore, Healey's so-called insights are trite and meaningless. Even the sound of his voice and his delivery just make my skin crawl... anger.... hatred... irritation. I'm indifferent towards Galley, but he'd be an infinite improvement over Healey.
Yes, Cole is the worst announcer in the game. I feel like he can barely determine where he is, let alone figure out whether the whistle was for a penalty, offside, icing etc.
Still, he gets a free pass because he's got the voice and is an HNIC staple. Makes me shrug off his many, many shortcomings. Think of him as a "Harry Carey" type, take him with a grain of salt and try to enjoy his ridiculousness for all it's worth.
He took a lot of shit from fans and the coach alike this season (some of it deserved) because of his turnovers and bad penalties.
Through all of this, he has quietly put up career numbers and helped our secondary scoring (which is basically him, Greening and Turris). Add to this the fact that he got booted off the second line relatively early in the season.
He might not have performed as well as some expected, but his grit and relentless driving to the net will serve us well in the playoffs.
He deserves some respect. Sure, he has downside(s), but he's done well for himself (mostly on the 3rd or 4th lines) this season and has clearly improved the power of his stride since last year.
Ott 4 NYR 1
Ott 3 NYR 0
Ott 2 NYR 3
Ott 5 NYR 4 (SO)
think we have handled them pretty well, 3-1...2 pretty convincing wins, and the only loss by a goal. Rangers after 1994 usually are good for a post season let down, so Sens could definitely take this series if A) Anderson plays close to Lundqvist's level B) we can steal one of the games in MSG and C) our PP actually click and score us some timely goals.
as a wild card...decent refs for our series would be good too, basically boycotting the refs that have a Sens hate on.
It's too bad Dean Brown is doing a different series - or you could listen to the radio with the game on (shades of listing to the Expos with Duke and Dave and watching the game on French TV).
I usually just mute the commentators... watch the game in peace...I find any commentators..e ven good ones, ruin my game watching experience.
#spreadthewealth
Would love to have the option of still hearing the on-ice mics and crowd noise etc but not the broadcasters.
An added bonus is the Sens will pick 15th, unless they reach the EC Final. And no @Steve_Lloyd, they have no shot at Cody Ceci at 15. #top10
I know this was debated on the last board and not sure if anyone resolved it. AJ's pretty sharp so I assume he's correct.
that would so be ideal...am with you on that.
Sens options if they end up drafting 15th:
Derrick Pouliot, Portland (WHL),1/16/94, D
Hampus Lindholm, Rogle (SWE), 1/20/94, D (if he falls a bit)
Or do we grab a goalie?
Malcolm Subban, Belleville (OHL), 12/21/93, G
hampus is more likely going closer to late 20s so he will be available, we should look for ludvig bystrom who will also be in our ball park. also i want someone that can replace kuba on karlssons side. that can be cowen one day. but as long as it is a lefty and a defencive minded 2way guy (ludvig is bascially just that)
I wouldn't say Sandy is a glass half empty. She is rarely , if ever, pessimistic. I'd say she can be grouped in with Senschirp's glass half full. Funny and insightfull post though! :)
Doing Boston-Washingt on in the first round with Millen and Rainne on #HNIC
Sucks to not have Dean-o on the Ottawa broadcast. While I agree he's a total homer he (IMO) does a good job being impartial when it's a national broadcast.
And he's EONs better than that senile old Cole.
Pretty decent recap though - not 100% accurate but pretty close on most counts. Should have ignored the trolls though.
Where's the "!!" in Snoopy Senior's?
Where the heck did Johne go to?
BTW - 67s mounting a great comeback here.
Agree on avoiding the trolls.
great comeback! Tied at 2 going into OT. Does anyone have a stream for the game?
echo echo! ;) Stream? I'm just listening to it on team 1200!
How can Ottawa get into the top 10 to take him ahead of Toronto?
Hmmm...I'd say Murray tricks Burke again to somehow get Ceci like he did with Cowen. Tell him you want a highly toted forward and then Burke will try to steal "our guy". And then Ceci will drop further and we can trade up with another willing participant!
We have a couple of options. We could find a team in the top 10 that's looking more for a forward than a defenseman and see if they want one our surplus forward prospects. Or we can just pass on Ceci and grab Subban to add more depth in goal. Could do both I guess.
Somewhat depends on what Murray plans to do in July (i.e. if he's planning to sign a young defenseman - Suter??)
Wouldn't you know they have the Rangers sweeping the Sens.
When will they ever learn.
Keep it up Hockey News, it's done wonders for us thus far!
Wow, I thought they would try to redeem themselves by predicting a Sens series upset. Ridiculous...
Go Sens go!
So Biased!!!!!!
They really stick with the teams they love AND the teams they hate- IE: Sens.
Who cares though, I love how no one suspects us. This is just like the start of the season all over again, except it's the start of the second season baby!!!
Go Sens Go!!!!
Thursday can't come soon enough!!
Thursday, April 12, 2012 7 p.m. Ottawa at NY Rangers NHL Network, CBC
Thursday, April 12, 2012 7:30 p.m. Washington at Boston NBC Sports Network, CBC
So which part of the country is watching which game? Fuck sakes.
I believe that it means on those nights the Sens games will be shown "locally" in Ottawa, but the "national" game will be the Bruins/Caps.
Correct me anyone if I'm wrong.
That sounds about right. I think they had that last year with I don't remember. Man that fuckin sucks horse balls but at the very least for those not in the Ottawa area I think games will be posted on CBC's website. Go fuckin Sens go.
I think it's the opposite actually - national is the Ottawa game and some pocket gets the Bruins/Caps game. Maybe somewhere that NBC won't cover for the BOS/WAS game?
But either way, Ottawa game will be seen in Ottawa at least.
Game 1 and Game 3 will be seen across the country ..Rest in of the games will be shown in ONT viewing area
GO SENS GO
YEA BUDDIE.
If the Senators take there time, there's a chance of good power forward but for anyone expecting him to be ready next season or two years now will be very disappointed. I do like the passion and he's built like a brick wall. All I can say is if there is a player here I pity the teams defense that play against us in the next few years.
[quote name="Mr. Anderson"]Got a chance to see Mark Stone play live last night. First thing I'll say is he's a long way off from being an NHL forward. It'll take time for him to keep up in the AHL as a top six forward, however the signs are good, he's a little slow like you would expect from a big man but his defensive coverage and ability to win puck battles was impressive. He won multiple battles over Gernat, Reinhart, and Pysyk all top prospects either this year or for their respective clubs.
I thought he improved his foot speed (?) How was he playmaking wise/around the net? Was he a threat like he was in the WJC? Could just have had an off game.
I'll agree that he needs time in the A though.
Get outta here. Pass the link this way bud and I will send you this one in return.

Per Steve Lloyd at the Team1200. Announced on Twitter. Arrived earlier today. Supposed to play for Bingo come weekend,
Welcome back Mika... did Claesson come with him?
As for the Hockey News preditions -- they will be idiots once again after the 1st round. They actually had Wash beating Boston... considering Wash is currently using their 3rd string goalie in Holtby due to injuries to Vokoun and Neuwirth... will either of them be ready for the opening round?
Bob Cole should be used for the Maritime (Read Boston) series down east maybe thet can understand him?
Healy like Millen of Leafs TV, is a friggin' Ranger Lover and Alumnus.
Campbell was born in Ottawa but just loves "Hog Town" and the "Big Apple"...go figure...
I shall have to turn the sound off and do the play by play for my wife she just loves that...
Sens vs Pitt (to defeat Phil) - Sens in 6
Sens vs Wash (to defeat Boston and NJD) - Sens in 5
Sens vs Nuks - Sens in 7
Mark it down and take it to Vegas...
He's actually wrong. Teams get seeded 15-22 based on results of first round. So 8 team that lose get seeded accordin to their reg season results. So if we lose in 1st round then yes we draft 15. Should we lose in 2nd round we draft 23. Lose in 3rd round draft 27
This format changed 2 years ago I believe
Im in Calgary and I've already emailed the CBC to voice that exact opinion. They don't deserve a cent of taxpayer money if they would even consider playing the Wash/Boston series instead of the Sens. The board of directors at the CBC are probably angry Laffs fans.
Great I can't wait for our boys to shut them up and eat their homer words so they go home miserable, hating the fact that the sens kicked NYR's asses.
Well as a GIANT Sens fan that was born and raised on PEI, I will just say that you can suck it. I despise Bob Cole almost as much as the Leafs.
As far as the coverage goes, if I am forced to watch the Boston series (because that is the only real team in that series) over the Sens because of whatever CBC is doing, I am going to write a very angry letter.
The reason why they have two networks playing the 8 playoffs series in Canada is so that EVERY series gets televised nationally. And it is always split up so that there is minimal overlap between the two series' on each network every night. If what the Senschirp community thinks is true, I am going to be extremely upset.
So we get that Leaf loving piece of shit in Healey doing the Ottawa games. Why? He hates Ottawa so he will definitey be in trash mode.
I guess we'll just have to win the damn Cup to get a little respect in our own country. so be it.
D-
BTW Sens in 6
"Since the 2004 lockout, the Sens are 11-2-1 at Madison Square Garden, where they haven’t lost since October of 2009"
Thank god for Gary! How the f**k we always get stuck with that gibbering moron Healy I have no idea, someone at the CBC hates O-Town, that's no lie. I'd rather listen to what a head of cabbage has to say about hockey than that idiot.
I think Sens in 7. No way the Rangers just roll over, especially since they're the top seed in the East this year as opposed to the bottom!
Hey Hey... I resemble that remark,
Got a great chuckle out of this, great job "someone we should all know"!
Have to assume it's Schribes and Goodie.
Haha you seen him play one game live and you think you know everything about him. Even the pros, coaches,gm ect. cant predict how long it takes to developpe prospects you dont know how much Stone wants it.
This is actually incorrect I beieve.
For playoff teams all teams are rated from 1-16 based on divisional winners first, followed by point totals - conference doesn't matter.
If a team is eliminated in the playoffs in the first or second round, their positioning in the draft is based off of their point totals in the regular season.
For teams making their respective conference finals and being eliminated they receive 27th and 28th respectively.
Teams in the SCF get 29th and 30th respectively.
Therefore Ottawa will draft 15th overall or 27th - 30th
This is why Ottawa drafted 21st (from Nashville's 1st) even though they made the 2nd round of playoffs
Ottawa Senators vs New York Rangers by the Numbers

I'd love to see some actual clarity on this issue. Not that it matters a whole I guess.
It seems odd to me that some draft picks when traded would be conditional on winning one round of the playoffs if the pick doesn't move. So that leads me to believe that winning any round of the playoffs affects your draft position. But of course that's just a guess.
Unlike Pierre McDouche.
Let the fun begin. Sens will be on the ice at 11 a.m. today, first practice in advance of Game 1 Thurs at MSG vs. Rangers.
The only example from last year of this is Nashville. Nashville was the 5th seed, Anaheim the 4th.
- Nashville beats Anaheim in first round.
- Nashville loses in second round.
- Nashville receives 21st overall (Traded to Ottawa, where we select Noesen)
- Anaheim receives 22nd overall (Traded to Toronto, where they select Biggs
I get it...Robin Lehner is our better back up because he drinks water from Sweden by the half cup?
For a guy we all know, ya got a prtty good handle on most of us except of course for myself!
SENs in SIX!
Good sign for the Sens: Chris Neil now out to skate with the team for main practice.
This is huge for us...will need chris neil to be a s*** disturber against the Rangers
Pretty clear who Maclean is going with. Carkner has yet to take a turn in line drills. Gilroy with Phillips the whole time. #Sens
Steve Lloyd @Steve_Lloyd
Safe to say Neil is fine. Players make him lead the stretch at practice and chirping ensues. #Sens
Chris Neil, who still doesn't appear 100% healthy, has just left practice.
Uh-oh.
Gilroy is better than he has shown.
Phillips plays more offensively (aggressively) with Gilroy in the reguler season...now for the playoffs??
http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/46516-NHL-Stanley-Cup-Playoff-Preview-Round-1.html
Hard to agree with a lot of their picks, especially the sens getting swept by a team they've shown they can go toe-to-toe with.
They overlooked a lot of factors in a lot of series. The bruins toughness/depth (Marchand and Lucic, dirty players, but have been great in the play-offs) Gonchars experience etc...
At least someone has our backs http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=626616
Agreed. I'm okay with Gilroy starting the series against a more skilled team. Don't think we need Carks to "police" the Rangers.
Errr. Reason why Carkner hasn't taken a turn with Phillips. He's not out there. Only missing player. #Sens
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockeynightincanada/broadcast/
Seems like a misprint on they got the days mixed up when they said they would televise the Bruins series Thursday. This obviously conflicts with the Sens and NO WAY they would ever show an American match-up, in any part of the country, when a CDN team is playing in the playoffs.
They already stand a good chance of losing more broadcast rights to TSN when the contract comes up in 2013. To show an all American matchup instead of a Canadian team? That would be the death knell nail in the MF coffin.
That's why it's too early to be playing this guessing game. Carkner and Gillroy will not make or break this team.
I'm more interested on who's playing on that 2nd line. Is Foligno going to get to stay there or is Maclean not willing to risk the penalties in the playoffs?
What is Mika doing at practice today? Just watching after some meetings with the management team?
True enough. Though I don't agree on Foligno - I think he's great on that second line and while he does take penalties I think he needs to play on the edge like that.
I don't think that's a disagreement Hax, not sure where you saw that. I'm the most vocal person about having Foligno on that 2nd line. He's been the 3rd person on that line when it's been clicking all season. When he was removed they went cold.
However, there must be a reason why he was banished to the 3rd and 4th lines so much this season, and I think it's that his playing on the edge started crossing the line too often and now he's a fav target of refs. I think he needs to play on edge, but about a third of his penalties are not required, and another third are pretty weak calls. If he could eliminate even half of those two thirds of bs calls I think the coach wouldn't have an issue.
Yeah it's seemed pretty clear to me all season that Murray and MacLean have asked Foligno to play more on the edge. I could be totally wrong of course but I think they want him to be a Ryan Smyth type guy (or that direction anyway).
He's still a young guy and some of his penalties (to me) are the type where the coaches are likely saying "Okay Nick, you tried to get into the paint there and the defenseman angled you off - that's why you ended up contacting the goalie. You need to either flatten the defenseman there or change your route and find another way into the paint."
I know it's painful sometimes but I think if he sticks with it he'll find the right balance.
Almost like Spezza and his drop passes. Instead of never doing a drop pass again (as some fans wanted) he kept at it and learned when it was low risk and when it wasn't.
The Sens will upset the Rangers. I don't care how many games it takes but it will happen.
As for the CBC coverage, I for one am pumped to not have to listen to Dean and Denis any more. I can't stand their commentary and their lame attempts at humor.
There's something about playoff hockey and Bob Cole that go hand in hand. I'm just so used to listening to him year after year after year that it just wouldn't feel right listening to someone else in the playoffs. I do acknowledge that he's a terrible play by play guy and he can't get any players names right, but he's a classic, regardless of being a Leaf lover or not.
Glen Healy on the other hand is a total idiot.
Tim Thomas was asked if he was concerned White House questions might kick up w/WASH as their opponent. He promptly shut down media session
This goes out to both Cole, and to Healey.
It is almost to a point that the powers that be at CBC in TO, just love to have us complain over the terrible jobs that they do.
It would only make obvious sense to have two Ottawa guys in Brown and Galley do our games.
They love to kick us when we are down, and are probably counting on a NY win, to have these two clowns, witness and mock our suffering.
Well lets all hope in backfires and we kick the Rangers butts, so we can hear their whiney commentary, and obvious dismay at our success,
And if they were to dare not show a Canadian series, over 2 American teams, well in Canada, where hockey is religion, that is as close as you can come to Blasphamy!
I dare the stupid big whigs in TO to try such a stupid move.
I bet even the Torries and Harper would jump all over this
Go Sens Go
LOL !
Third game of Series is in Washington.
Time for the CAPITALS to hire a couple Obama impersonators to lead cheers in their "White House" ?
