  • Welcome to the Canadian Tire Centre

The Ottawa Senators have called a press conference for 10:00 AM this morning where it is expected they’ll announce a new partner and a name for the building once known as Scotiabank Place.

And while the reports have yet to be “confirmed”, some good detective work by a couple SensChirp readers leads us to believe the new sponsor is Canadian Tire and the building will be renamed The Canadian Tire Centre.  Plenty of reaction to the new name around these parts yesterday but the reality is it’s a good Canadian company now associated with the Ottawa Senators brand.

Live Blog- (Lee for Gilroy- Done Deal)

(UPDATE 2:03 PM)- The Ottawa Senators have traded defenceman Brian Lee to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Matt Gilroy.

(UPDATE 11:53 AM)- Apologies to those of you that can not access the live blog due to firewall restrictions.  All is quiet on the Sens front right now.  Rumours that they are receiving calls on Konopka and Carkner but beyond that, a quiet deadline day for Sens fans.  Some speculation about PA Parenteau but the asking price is far too high.

The Ottawa Senators have already made a couple moves, adding Kyle Turris and Ben Bishop so the Sens are not expected to be active.

But Bryan Murray has surprised people before. Follow along with at SensChirp Trade Deadline Liveblog and get all the latest from the Sens and around the NHL. We'll get started at 9:00 AM this morning. Happy Deadline Day, hockey fans!

I think we see some moves today, with the acquisition of Bishop, Auld is useless to us, there could be a team moving out a top goalie that just needs a back up of some sort to finish the year.
Konopka, Carkner, time will tell.

Deadline Day is finally here!

Hopefully after 3 PM Laff fans can finally shut up about getting Nash, or "Insert Big Name Player Here" for their garbage players, and draft bust Kadri. Also tired of Hab fans proposing stupid trades for Gomez/Gionta/etc.

In Murray I trust, GO SENS! GO!

Could the bishop acquisition somehow be linked to the sens going after Nash? the Sens have cap space. Nash has a big contract and Karlsson will be signed to one, but Alfie, Gonchar and Kuba will all be coming off the books soon.
we now have two top goalie prospects, and multiple young prospects. Nash is only 27 and still has at leat 6-7 good years left. Bishop(or Lehner), Zibanejad (or Stone), Wiercoch and 1st round pick for Nash??
this deal helps us alot, and doesnt really hurt us. we don't need 2 goalie prospects, and Zibanejad or Stone will probably never be as good as Nash...

Auld was a warm body to back up Anderson, Anderson out scared the hell out of BM.
Would you rather go with Auld Lehner for the remainder of the season not sure how Lehner will play due to his bingo stats, or go with Lehner Bishop to close the year, ride whoever is hot.

I think it has nothing to do with Lehner, BM wants two guys he can count on to carry us the rest of the season for playoffs.

With Bishop in the fold now, and assuming he along with Lehner, and Auld, rotate for the next little bit, what exactly is happening with Bingo? Are they now done for the year? Do they only have one keeper down there now? What are their chances of defending their championship?

Carkner, Konopka, Auld all UFA's that we really don't need.

Wouldn't mind seeing any of them go today, even for a lower round pick. I'm sure there are a lot of teams knocking for Konopka he's actually a good 4th line playoff type player.

Auld can hit the road for all I care

Bryan isn't trading Kuba unless he's blown away with an offer. I wouldn't trade Kuba for a second rounder right now. His value to our team is higher than that.

Apparently the offers for Kuba are third rounders. What's the point at this stage.

I think you look at a second or decent prospect if you move him otherwise keep him for the push.

Trade ideas...

1) 2012 1st round pick, Matt Peumpel for Zack Bogosian

Then do...

2) 2013 1st round pick, Sergei Gonchar, Bobby Butler for David Perron

Both Bogosian and Perron are about to enter their prime and both would fit in beautifully IMO

Bishop to Binghamton to relieve the pressure for the time being until Ben's one way takes the back up job from Robin @ training camp. A great early move by Bryan but it just puts off the inevitable!

Robin Lehner did not come over here to play 3rd string goalie for the Ottawa Senators for 3 or 4 years. He, his agent and I se him as a starter in the NHL!

Good trade.

Gilroy caters to what the Sens need which is better defence. We are the worst team statistically defensively in the entire league, Gilroy will help improve that.

Plus he's a UFA, so BM has the option not to keep him. This may also mean that if he chooses not to resign, BM may look to a notable defenceman to acquire because of the vacancy.

But we are way to soft on the blueline and this will bolster things. Good move.

Matt Gilroy

Gilroy was the recipient of the Hobey Baker Award and a participant in Boston University's National Title team the week he was signed by the Rangers to an entry-level contract. The senior defenseman from Long Island, New York, was originally a walk-on to the Terriers' team, and turned down several free agent contracts to return to BU for his senior season. Named to a First Team Hockey East All-Star for the third team during the 2008-09 season, Gilroy was also named to the All-America First Team for his work along the Terriers' blueline. The captain of Boston University's men's hockey team in his senior year, Gilroy led all defensemen in the Hockey East in scoring and was third among all collegiate blueliners for the 2008-09 season.

A defensively responsible blueliner, Gilroy has excellent hockey sense, a strong determination, and good vision. A very good puck mover, Gilroy is a character player, with captain potential.

Matt Gilroy.. from what I read... is an offensive defenseman. Would it not have been better for the Sens to get a defensive defenseman?

Sad to see Lee go.... he was the good luck charm for this team.. I mean by keeping Carkner in the pressbox... record of 12-0-1 (or something like that) with Lee in the lineup...

As for Bishop/Lehner -- If Murray plays it right.. Lehner should be okay. He knows he will be in Ottawa in a year or two... Murray mentioned that Lehner is not having the season they expected him to.... is this a way to push him?

A little surprising to see Lee traded, it seems to have been a long time in the making since Murray took over as GM to move out some of the Muckler picks.

Gilroy is a more experienced defencemen, he is much more offensive than Lee & can also play decent defensively. I think it is a bit of an upgrade from Lee & should give us another offensive option on the 3rd pairing. Good luck to Lee in Tampa who seem to be stock piling defencemen.

Theres a difference from being an offensive defenceman, and being a puck mover. Gilroy likes to move the puck. He was a "offensive defenceman" in college [if you look at his points in college] but certainly has not translated into the NHL as an offensive defenceman. But he is still a puck mover, and will probably take Phillips' place on the second PP unit.

What I do like about him is that he is just a better defeceman all around.

We will like him guys. Trust.

Bishop was brought in because after pumping everyones head full of shit on how great Lehner is, BM is realizing that perhaps that is incorrect information. Bishop is supposed to come in (next year) Lehners spot so Lehner can actually develop in the minors, unlike this year which he just coasted through, knowing next year the back up was open. Well, not any more. The kid is a head case. Makes Hasek look calm and collected. Im sure hes livid about it.

Lee trade....idk, never was a huge fan of him but he definately got better. I guess we will just have to see what gilroy can do. I do like what gilroy brings which i always thought was more of a defensive game then offensive. Appears to be a trade we will have to wait and see which team is the winner.

I am surprised and sad to see Lee go at this time.
I have been supporting him, and his play of late has been exceptional.
Not sure what was gained if anything, as I really do not know anything about Gilroy.
For whatever reason (maybe b/c Lee is not a Murray pick) he has never been given his fair shake, and I fear that this will go down as a bad Murray deal in the end, especially if Gilroy signs elsewhere, which is more than likely as he is an American, and will rather play in the US....IMO only of course

Best of luck to Lee, he deserves the time he will be given in Tampa

as most of you already know, I would have rather we lost Kuba and kept Lee... sad day for Miguel :(

We don't know what happens with Lehner going forward... IF he beats out Bishop for the backup next season.. then he gets it.. whether Bishop is on a 1 way or not... Murray said there will be competition for backup.. he did not say it was Bishop's to lose.

I'm sure deep down Robin is disappointed (and I don't like that).. how could he not be.. but he is not having a good season.. even though the team is really bad. But Lehner is only 20 yrs old... maybe the team thinks he is not ready yet...

But I'm sure Lehner is more comfortable playing under pressure than Bishop based on that Cup run in Bingo last season.

I'm personally pulling for Lehner...

Like the Gilroy deal, gives the sens a chance to take another look at a guy they were aparently high on signing.

Brent Wallace said the Lightening were interested in Lee last deadline.. curious as to why Sens did not trade him with everyone else last season.

Hate the thought of playing Hodgson 6 times a year.... will Vancouver regret this move? Kassian is a rough type player.. will probably be in the penalty box a lot more than Hodgson... really like Hodgson...

Would anybody have done Foligno for Kassian? I heard today that it was a possibility.

Gaustad for a first round pick. Wow. He's basically a goon that can win faceoffs.

Wonder what Konopka would have gotten us...

Great move on the Lee trade.
Gilroy can pass the puck (assists) and skate.
Perfect.

Welcome to the Sens Gilroy

Wow Hodgson to BUF for Kassian. 10th overall for 13th overall.

I guess the Canucks wanted to add some grit to their roster, cuz that kid really plays on the edge.

Strange because they have a bunch of guys like that: Burrows, Lappierre, recently Palhsson, even Kessler and now Gudstad. I wouldn't like to play the Nucks...

To be honest, I'd love to meet the Canucks now, they just eliminated some of their best depth scoring, and the Sedins are pushovers. It's going to be all up to Burrows and Kesler if they want to get anywhere.

Still not 100% convinced on the Gilroy trade but a couple readers filled me in on what Gilroy can bring.

I think Lee was coming along (slowly) and improving. Still think he had some upside left and I wish him the best.

Haven't seen a tonne of Gilroy so I am excited to see what he can bring.

Since Lee was in and out of the lineup so much, it certainly was a move that should not affect chemisty much if at all so I applaud Murray for that.

Columbus GM just stated that Nash asked for the trade, and not the other way around. Clears up the picture and the ridiculous demands quite a bit.

i think vancouver made a knee jerk trade here....Hodgson is good and can put up a lot of numbers, Kassian is just a goon.

but on second though, vancouver probably puts Kassian with the Sedins and then turns him in a much better version of Lucic.

Still Hodgson made Vancouver deep.....funny how Vancouver and Boston went about this deadline:
vancouver loaded up on forwards in Pahlsson and Kassian, Boston loaded up on defense in Zanon and Mottau...

I think Nashville loaded up more than anyone else though with Kostitsyn, Gaustad and Gill....

Nash got what he deserved, which is just a stressful couple of weeks and some love lost from Columbus.

He demands a trade while enforcing his no trade clause to select where he wants to go. Remind you of anyone? Just another diva putting his team in a tough spot. I'm glad Ottawa has nothing to do with him.

Not sure I agree that NASH is the new HEATLEY... NASH can actually skate and score without having great players feeding him the puck. What can MEatley do?

I'm happy for Lee. He's definitely an NHL D-man but he would never have grown in Ottawa because he was always expected to be something he isn't. It's not his fault Muckler thought highly of him on draft day and selected him before Kopitar and Staal but it's something he's forced to live with. In reality, he's OK and unspectacular but he can get the job done. I like it and I look forward to what Gilroy can do.

I'm not comparing their talent levels. I completely agree Nash is by far the better player.

one thing to note about Bishops contract.

apparently it is a one way but he does not need to clear waivers this year or next if i understood it correctly.

Accordingly, Lehner or Bishop can go up and down as PM sees fit.

Interesting tidbit from the Matt Gilroy interview on TSN said he had heard from various players in the league who knows players on the Sens that they have a great coaching team... so some good stuff being said.. as well as being seen.

Pulling for Lee... I hope he succeeds in Tampa and gets the playing time he needs to develop.

Feel bad for Cody Hodgson -- leaving what is probably a Stanley Cup final team.. to a team basically in the basement.

Robin didn't come over to play 4 years for the Bighamton Senators. He was promised NHL Games this year @ $875k instead he's looking at peanuts in Bingo, this is an expensive young man. Already Ben has been crossed up he was expecting the "Show" and a one way contract not Bingo...we dropped the ball big time and it's going to get worse.

What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard; At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that can be considered a rational thought, everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read this; I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.
